Elmer J. Trausch

Hastings resident Elmer J. Trausch, 88, of 707 Valley Chase Ave., died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, at BryanLGH Medical Center East in Lincoln.
Rosary is 10 a.m. and services are 10:30 a.m., both Wednesday at the Assumption Catholic Church with the Rev. David Bourek officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church.
Mr. Trausch was born Jan. 16, 1912, to Mathias and Catherine (Kaiser) Trausch in Adams County. He attended Adams County District No. 28 school and graduated from eighth grade at Assumption Catholic School. He then started farming near Roseland. On Oct. 29, 1941, he married Joanna Thaut in Hastings. They moved to Hastings in 1973. He retired from farming in 1976.
He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Hastings, Crosier Lay Apostolate, Elks Club in Hastings and Knights of Columbus.
Survivors are his wife; one son, Robert of Juniata; four sisters, Martha Preissler of Grand Island, Laurine Preissler of Harvard and Susan Thaut and Jeanette Svoboda, both of Hastings; three brothers, Edward P. and Charles, both of Riverside, Calif., and Vern of Sun City, Ariz.; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers.
Memorials may be given to St. Michael's Catholic Church.

Services are pending with Brand-Wilson Funeral Home of Hastings.

Campbell resident Glenn E. Meyer, 74, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at Grandview Manor Nursing Home in Campbell.
Services are 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Campbell with the Rev. Bill Caughey officiating. Burial will be in St. Anne's Catholic Cemetery in Campbell. Campbell Funeral Home of Campbell is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Meyer was born Feb. 16, 1925, to Fred and Sophia (Nitzel) Meyer in Campbell. He graduated from Campbell High School in 1942. On Feb. 23, 1946, he married Nadine G. Roy in Campbell. He farmed his entire life until retiring in 1997.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
Survivors are his wife; one son, Dennis of Thorton, Colo.; four daughters, Judy Erickson and Jackie Hall, both of Campbell, and Joyce Soucek and Janet Karr, both of Bladen; two brothers, Frederick of Omaha and Lawrence of Grand Island; six sisters, Bessie Mercier of Grant, Esther Schmale, Lillian Bessinger and Neva Parks, all of Campbell, Elsie Rippen of Kearney and Margaret Schlosser of Gibbon; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother.
Memorials have been established.
Arlene Pfeiffer

Former Trumbull resident Arlene (Mankin) Pfeiffer, 85, of Birmingham, Ala., died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, in Birmingham.
Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Homewood, Ala. Private burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church. Ridout's Valley Chapel of Birmingham is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Pfeiffer was born Sept. 13, 1914, to Clinton and Trella (Phelps) Mankin in Trumbull. She married Ralph Burton Pfeiffer. She earned her nursing degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She and her husband moved to Birmingham in 1941.
She was a member of the Birmingham Cruising Club, Les Meres, Audubon Society and the Alabama Cattleman Association.
Survivors are two daughters, Jane Ann Pfeiffer Ford of Decatur, Ala., and Christina Pax Pfeiffer Killcreas of Starkville, Miss.; two sons, Ralph Jr. of Mobile, Ala., and Karl Ian of Birmingham; one brother, Blake of Hastings; two sisters, Izona Best of Williamsburg, Va., and Roena Manchreck of Lewiston, Idaho; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Howard T. David

Mankato, Kan., resident Howard Thaddeus David, 84, died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, in Mankato.
Services were to be 10:30 a.m. today at Harmony United Methodist Church in Mankato with the Rev. Frank DeFisher officiating. Burial was to be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Mankato. Melby Mortuary of Mankato is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. David was born June 30, 1915, to Benjamin and Jennie (Ingalsbe) David in Kirwin, Kan. On Oct. 28, 1939, he married Marjorie Viola Jones in Oberlin, Kan. He worked road construction until 1943 and then returned to farming. He was also a custom harvester from 1959-74. He retired in spring 1999.
He was a member of Harmony United Methodist Church, the Pike Trail Good Sam Club and the Fun N Sun Motorcycle Club.
Survivors are his wife; three sons, Larry of Wichita, Kan., Jerry of Mankato and Gary of Andover, Kan.; one daughter, Kathie Tyrell of Hutchinson, Kan.; two sisters, Rema Fairbanks of Andover and Blanche Talton of Glen Allen, Va.; two brothers, Lyman and Eugene, both of Lenora, Kan.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Linda Lou, and one brother.
Memorials may be given to the church or the Jewell County Emergency Medical Services.
M. Marguerite 'Dolly' Ord

Red Cloud resident M. Marguerite "Dolly" (Edie) Ord, 86, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at Heritage Care Center in Red Cloud.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hillside Baptist Church in Greeley, Colo. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Greeley. Adamson Mortuary of Greeley is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Ord was born Feb. 17, 1913, to Winfield Scott and Ona Melissa (Shelby) Edie in Emerson, Iowa. She moved with her family to Arkansas and graduated from Heber Springs High School in 1932. On April 29, 1933, she married Wendell Ord in Glenwood, Iowa. They lived in Hastings, Iowa, where she worked for Capper Publication Co. for more than 40 years. In 1950, she and her husband moved to Greeley. In 1987, her husband died. She moved to Red Cloud in 1992.
She was a member of Hillside Baptist Church.
Survivors are one son, Wendell of Guide Rock; one sister, Eylene Ellison of Kansas City, Mo.; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Carolyn L. Williams; three brothers; and one sister.
Joseph E. Herbek

Nelson resident Joseph E. Herbek, 91, died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, at Brodstone Memorial Nuckolls County Hospital in Superior.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Nelson with Monsignor Adrian Herbek, the Rev. David Drewelow and Sister Rosaline Herbek officiating. Burial will be in the Nelson Cemetery. Visitation is 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Klawitter-Price Funeral Home in Nelson.
Mr. Herbek was born Dec. 15, 1908, to Henry W. and Antonnia (Karmazin) near Deweese. He attended Star County School and graduated from Deweese High School in 1929. He worked as a farmer. On April 11, 1934, he married Rose Kotinek in Lawrence. They moved into Nelson in 1965.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Nelson and the Knights of Columbus. He served on the church board and the rural school board.
Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Mary Sue Hackett of Greeley, Colo., and Patricia Rose of Branson, Mo.; one brother, George of Hastings; one sister, Bessie Reining of Hastings; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the church or the Nelson Ambulance Fund.
Janyce J. Larsen

Former Hastings resident Janyce J. (Banta) Larsen, 68, of Salina, Kan., died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, at Salina Regional Health Center in Salina.
Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Ellsworth, Kan., with the Rev. Gary Bender officiating. Visitation is until 8 p.m. today at Parsons Funeral Home in Ellsworth and 9 a.m. until services Tuesday at the church.
Mrs. Larsen was born Aug. 20, 1931, to Jeff and Mable (Jones) Banta in Norfolk. She moved with her family in 1943 to Hastings. She graduated in 1949 from Hastings Senior High School and then graduated from Hastings Beauty School. On April 3, 1954, she married Virgil Larsen in Hastings. They farmed in Dannebrog until 1968 when they moved to Phoenix. She attended school there and became an administrator for the Good Samaritan Society. She and her family moved to Kansas and operated Good Samaritan Nursing Homes in Lincoln, Lyons, Kan., and Ellsworth for almost 20 years. In 1987 she retired and traveled with her husband.
Survivors are her husband; one son, Bryan of Las Vegas; two daughters, Debbie Klaus of Hays, Kan., and Karen Larsen of Irvine, Calif.; her mother of Hastings; one sister, Carol Towers of Blakely, Pa.; and one brother, Jay of Brandon, Vt.
Memorials may be given to the church or Full Measure Contemporary Christian Singing Group.
W.E. 'Gene' Fleming

Former Hastings resident W.E. "Gene" Fleming, 77, of Grand Island, died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, at Wedgewood Care Center in Grand Island.
The remains were cremated. Private services will be at a later date. Friends may sign the guest book until 9 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings.
Mr. Fleming was born July 30, 1922, to Roy and Beaula (Hopper) Fleming in Beaver City. He graduated from Beaver City High School. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. On April 25, 1944, he married Nadine Loffer. He worked at the Kearney Air Base as a heavy equipment operator. He and his wife moved to the West Coast where he worked in the shipyards. They later moved back to Hastings where he worked at Timberlock Co. He also worked for Broch-Thompson and Ligget Meyer Tobacco Co. in Hastings, Sioux Falls, S.D., and Omaha. In 1960 he started Fleming Manufacturing in Hastings. He retired in the late 1980s. On July 16, 1996, his wife died. He was owner of Andy the Goose.
He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Midwest Lodge No. 317, the Scottish Rite and the Tehama Shrine.
Survivors are one son, Stephen of Republican City; one sister, Bonnie Rosenberg of Phillipsburg, Kan.; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers.
Memorials may be given to the Shriners Childrens Hospital or the donor's choice.
Gary L. Israelson

Former Hastings resident Gary Lee Israelson, 57, of Rockwall, Texas, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, in Rowlett, Texas.
Services are 2 p.m.today at Rest Haven Funeral Home Rockwall chapel in Rockwall with the Rev. Dr. Aubrey Patterson officiating.
Mr. Israelson was born March 7, 1942, to Ralph and Margarite (Clauss) Israelson in Hastings. He served in the U.S. Army. He married Mary Jane McCord. He worked as a frame assembler for Lucite Tech in Mesquite, Texas, and Omaha for 33 years. He had lived in Rockwall for the past 22 years.
He was a member of the Rockwall Lions Club and the Pioneer Club of Telephone & Telegraph.
Survivors are his wife; two sons, Adam Israelson of Rockwall and Randy Carlson of Quinlan, Texas; and two sisters, Jerolyn Tjarks of Omaha and Deanna Kruger of Hastings.
Marjorie M. Stokes

Red Cloud resident Marjorie M. (Hart) Stokes, 75, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Congregational Church in Red Cloud with the Rev. Royce Rexilius officiating. Burial afterward will be private for the family. Simonson-Williams Funeral Home of Red Cloud is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Stokes was born Feb. 11, 1924, to Charles A. and Muryl G. (Brooks) Hart in Harrison County, Mo. She graduated from Eagleville (Mo.) High School in 1942 and received a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Northwest Missouri State Teachers College in Maryville, Mo. She taught school for one year in Clarinda, Iowa. On June 1, 1947, she married Ivan Stokes at Eagleville, Mo. They lived and farmed in the Garfield community south of Red Cloud. She worked a number of years for the Webster County welfare office. She taught at the District No. 85 rural school in Webster County. She retired after more than 20 years teaching at Lincoln Elementary School in Red Cloud. Her husband died Aug. 10, 1999.
She was a member of the Congregational Church, American Legion Auxiliary and Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies' Auxiliary, all of Red Cloud; Garfield Willing Workers; the National Campers and Hikers Association; and the Retired Teachers Association.
Survivors are two sons, Charles of Red Cloud and Bill of Houston; two daughters, Nancy Muehlhausen of Davey and Jane Morris of Red Cloud; one sister, Doris Hunsicker of Eagleville, Mo.; and six grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Catherine Kay; and one sister.
A memorial scholarship fund has been established.
Milford D. Pitts

Hebron resident Milford D. Pitts, 86, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at Blue Valley Lutheran Home in Hebron.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Christian Church in Hebron with the Rev. John Walton officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Hebron. Visitation begins at 4 p.m. today at Hebron Memorial Funeral Home in Hebron.
Mr. Pitts was born Oct. 21, 1913, to Stephen D. and Bertha A. (Tracy) Pitts. He attended school in Hebron and worked on a farm. On Feb. 25, 1937, he married Mildred Dorman in Belleville, Kan. He farmed for several years and moved to Hebron after retirement. He then worked for the state Road Department, Thayer County Road Department and the Hebron Landfill.
He was a member of the Christian Church.
Survivors are his wife; two sons, Jay of Hebron and Lyle of Deshler; four daughters, Joyce Ude of Fairbury, Lila Gottula of Auburn, Carla Griggs of Garden City, N.Y., and Carol Lichty of Kirk, Colo.; four sisters, Ida Mae Tryon of Marysville, Kan., Elnora Buhl of Hebron, Alene Shipman of Mesa, Ariz., and Bernice Carter of Olathe, Kan.; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
A memorial has been established.
