Hastings resident Edward Brown, 55, of 919 E. Seventh St., died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, at his home
Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Tom Murray officiating. Burial will be in Blue Valley Cemetery in Ayr. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. until services Friday at the funeral home.
Mr. Brown was born Oct. 15, 1944, to Homer Crandall and Loda Brown in New Castle, Ind. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1962-66. On Oct. 17, 1964, he married Carolyn Douglas. He worked for Firestone and Big G Tire Sales before becoming a salesman for Garrett Tires in Hastings and Grand Island. He had lived in Red Cloud and Hastings for 35 years.
He attended Juniata Community Church.
Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Lindie Brown and Jodi Brown, both of Hastings; one foster daughter, Sheila Speake of Lincoln; one foster son, John Calder of Scottsbluff; his mother of Illinois; three brothers, Paul Tackett of Wisconsin and Bill Reames and Ted Leatherman, both of Illinois; one sister, Renee Winscom of Wisconsin; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Memorials may be given to the family's choice.
Peggy L. Tjarks

Hastings resident Peggy L. (Reiber) Tjarks, 73, of Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, at Perkins Pavilion.
Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Carl W. Utley officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, noon to 9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. until services Friday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Tjarks was born Jan. 8, 1926, to Henry and Jennie (Lay) Reiber in Hastings. She graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1943 and attended Hastings College for two years. On June 4, 1950, she married Ernest Tjarks in Hastings. She was a secretary for Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District for eight years. She was then a secretary for Nebraska Public Power District. In 1973, her husband died.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the WWI Auxiliary No. 1556, Adams County Historical Society and the Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
Memorials may be given to the Nebraska Boys Ranch, P.O. Box 639, Alliance, NE 69301, or the Hastings Museum of Natural and Cultural History.
Evelyn Hostick

Merna resident Evelyn (Johnson) Hostick, 82, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Govier Brothers Mortuary chapel in Broken Bow with the Rev. Doug Jones officiating. Burial will be in the Merna Cemetery. Visitation is until 8 p.m. today at the mortuary.
Survivors are two sisters, including Norma Ellingson of Hastings; two brothers; four stepgrandchildren; and 11 great-stepgrandchildren.
Velma F. Welbourn

Former Superior resident Velma Frances (Bilger) Welbourn, 80, of Omaha, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 1999, at Aksarben Manor in Omaha.
Graveside services are 1 p.m. Saturday at the Evergreen Cemetery in Superior with the Rev. Harold Backus officiating. Williams Funeral Home of Superior is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Welbourn was born May 16, 1919, to John and Ina (Wells) Bilger in Pryor, Okla. She grew up and lived in the Superior area. She married Art Good. They moved to Fort Lupton, Colo., and then back to Superior. They later divorced. On Dec. 7, 1948, she married James Welbourn in Mankato, Kan. He died Nov. 22, 1985. In 1993 she moved to Omaha.
Survivors are two sons, Jim Welbourn and Earl Good, both of Omaha; two daughters, Jean Welbourn of Las Vegas and Ina Mae Cooke of Hastings; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Norman D. Good, and two brothers.
Donald L. Classen

Former Hastings area resident Donald L. Classen, 73, of Omaha, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1999, at Hospice House in Omaha.
Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Helmut Yurk officiating. Burial will be in Blue Valley Cemetery in Ayr. Visitation is 1-9 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. until services Saturday at the funeral home.
Mr. Classen was born Feb. 26, 1926, to Louis and Louise (Meyer) Classen in Glenvil. He graduated from Campbell High School in 1943. He then became manager of Campbell Grain Elevator in Campbell. On Feb. 19, 1948, he married Eloise Carney in Campbell. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951-53 during the Korean War. From 1954-77 he managed the Ayr Grain Elevator in Ayr. In 1977 he and his wife moved to Axtell where they owned and operated Orange Coach Restaurant. They retired in 1997 and moved to Omaha.
He was a member of the Omaha American Legion No. 374.
Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Beth Classen of Lincoln and Mary Carlson of Omaha; two sons, David of Riverdale and Alan of St. Louis; two brothers, Willard of Des Moines, Iowa, and Roger of Sonoma, Calif.; two sisters, Marilyn Schmidt of Hastings and Genene Hansen of Minden.
He was preceded in death by two brothers.
Memorials may be given to the Hospice House in Omaha or the Blue Valley Cemetery Association.
Ella M. Royston

Prosser resident Ella M. (Schroeder) Royston, 93, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Graveside services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Concordia Cemetery near Prosser with the Rev. Greg Volzke officiating. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings.
Mrs. Royston was born April 23, 1906, to Carl and Emma (Katsberg) Schroeder in Juniata. On Feb. 18, 1929, she married H.L. "Bud" Royston. He died in May 1996.
She was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church in Juniata.
Survivors are two daughters, Lois Houp of Prosser and Delores Young of Arlington, Texas; one son, Larry of Prosser; two sisters, Marie Stelzer and Rufina Bockerman, both of Hastings; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two children.
Memorials may be given to Christ Lutheran Church.
Donald J. 'Duck' Taylor

Former Hastings resident Donald Jerry "Duck" Taylor, 48, of Aurora, Colo., died Sunday, Oct. 17, 1999, in Aurora, Colo.
Graveside services are 11 a.m. Friday at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Omaha. Memorial services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Myers Funeral Home chapel in Omaha with the Rev. Darryl C. Eure officiating.
Mr. Taylor was born Feb. 27, 1951, to Viola M. Starr and Ed Lewis in Hastings. He graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1969. He married Denise Taylor and they later divorced. He was an employee of U.S. West for several years.
Survivors are two daughters, Lisa Taylor and Nya Taylor, both of Omaha; his mother of Omaha; his father of St. Louis; his grandmother, Myrtle Hill of Hastings; three brothers, Byron and Steven, both of Hastings, and Robert of Wichita, Kan.; and seven sisters, Brenda Taylor of Denver, Renae Robinson of Hastings and Debra Breckenridge, Cheryl Haygood, Cynthia Taylor, Christi Carroll and Dedhra Dee Starr, all of Omaha.
Donations may be made to the Black United Fund in care of American National Bank.
Clarence V. Himes

Former Sutton resident Clarence V. Himes, 89, of Hermosa Beach, Calif., died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, in Torrence, Calif.
Graveside services are 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Sutton Cemetery with the Rev. Stanley Crawford officiating. Kohler Mortuary of Sutton is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Himes was born Aug. 26, 1910, to Walter F. and Evelyn (Jarrett) Himes in Nebraska. He graduated from Sutton High School in 1927. He also graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in engineering. He later moved to California where he married his wife, Josephine. They have lived in Hermosa Beach for the past 55 years.
Survivor is his wife.
Merle K. Shineman

Former Riverton resident Merle K. Shineman, 76, of Independence, Mo., died Friday, Sept. 17, 1999, at St. Mary's Hospital in Blue Springs, Mo.
Services were Sept. 21 at Webb-Freer Funeral Home in Kansas City, Mo. Burial was in Green Lawn Cemetery in Kansas City, Mo.
Mr. Shineman was born July 23, 1923, to Earl W. and Mary A. (McCoy) Shineman in Riverton. On Nov. 14, 1944, he married Patricia Shaw. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He later was an inspector for the Brunson Instrument Co. in Kansas City, Mo., until retiring in 1987.
He was a member of the Blue Springs First Church of the Nazarene and American Legion Post No. 1000 in Blue Springs.
Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Peggy Bittiker of Independence and Kay Winstead of Blue Springs; one son, John of Independence; two sisters, Pearl Jameson of Upland and Beulah Strine of Minden; two brothers, Albert of Lee's Summit, Mo., and Gerald of Grand Island; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the Blue Springs First Church of the Nazarene or the American Cancer Society.
Mary Ellen Mertz

Former Hastings resident Mary Ellen (O'Connell) Schmidt Mertz, 76, of Estes Park, Colo., died Sept. 10, 1999, at Prospect Park Living Center in Estes Park.
Services were Sept. 14 at St. Robert's Catholic Church in Omaha. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Omaha. Allnutt Funeral Service Estes Park Chapel of Estes Park was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Mertz was born May 31, 1923, to William Joseph and Anna Marie (Kernan) O'Connell in Hastings. She graduated from St. Cecilia High School in Hastings and attended Hastings College for one year. She also attended St. Theresa's College in Winona, Minn., for one year. She married Herbert Schmidt. He died in 1974. She was a teacher's aide at St. Robert's Catholic School in Omaha. On Aug. 20, 1988, she married Laverne Mertz. She was a longtime summer resident of Estes Park and moved there from Omaha to live full-time in September 1998.
She was a member of Our Lady of The Mountains Catholic Church in Estes Park. She was an officer and was active in the League of Women Voters in Omaha.
Survivors are her husband; four sons, Bill Schmidt of Evanston, Ill., Tom Schmidt of Derwood, Md., John Schmidt of Alexandria, Va., and Andy Schmidt of Omaha; three daughters, Julie Teramoto of Cerritos, Calif., Jean Teramoto of Kyoto, Japan, and Kathryn Schmidt of Omaha; two stepdaughters, Janet Watson of Littleton, Colo., and Peggy Belshe of Estes Park; three stepsons, Thomas Mertz of Omaha, Michael Mertz of Kearney and Robert Mertz of Columbia, S.C.; two brothers, Pat O'Connell of Oakton, Va., and Jim O'Connell of Denver; 16 grandchildren; nine stepgrandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Alfred Niemeyer

Deshler resident Alfred Henry Niemeyer, 87, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, at Hebron.
Memorial services are 2 p.m. Sunday at Peace Lutheran Church in Deshler with the Rev. Phillip Nielsen officiating. The remains were cremated. Burial is in Deshler City Cemetery. Ahrendts Funeral Home of Deshler is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Niemeyer was born Dec. 30, 1911, to William and Katherine Niemeyer at Clatonia. On May 24, 1938, he married Esther Scholz at Beatrice.
He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife of Deshler; two daughters, Eunice Dahlbeck of San Antonio, Texas, and Delores Matulis of Lincoln; one son, Charles of Ashland; one sister, Lena Burger of DeWitt; two brothers, Lorenz of Lincoln and Fred "Shorty" of Beatrice; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.
A memorial has been established and may go in care of the family.
John "Jack" Van Kirk

Sutton resident John "Jack" Van Kirk, 66, died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at his home.
Services are 2 p.m. Monday at Federated Church in Sutton with the Rev. Bill Jardine officiating. Burial will be in Sutton Cemetery. Visitation is at Kohler Mortuary in Sutton. Military rites will be conducted by Argonne American Legion Post No. 61 of Sutton.
Mr. Van Kirk was born May 19, 1933, to John and Marion (McMickle) Van Kirk in Sparta, N.J. He graduated from Franklin High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On June 26, 1955, he married Carol Curtis in Sutton. He operated a family dairy farm, worked as a heavy equipment operator and was a rural mail carrier while in New Jersey. In 1971 he moved to Sutton. He worked for Sutton Lumber before he and his sons formed Van Kirk Sand and Gravel Inc. As the company grew, they went into underground utility construction, soil conservation work and general construction, changing the name to Van Kirk Bros. Contracting. He retired in 1998.
He was a member of Argonne Post No. 61 of the American Legion for 29 years, serving as post commander for several years, District 10 commander for two years and Department sergeant at arms in 1996-97. He was an 18-year member of Forty & Eight Voiture 675 and was a master Mason of Evening Star Masonic Lodge No. 49. He also was a member of Fox Hollow Golf Course and the Association of General Contractors. In 1975 he coached Sutton's American Legion Junior baseball team to a Class C state championship.
Survivors are his wife; three sons, John, Jim and David, all of Sutton; one daughter, Diane Griess of Sutton; one sister, Marilyn Mull of Blairstown, N.J.; one brother, Tom of Sparta, N.J.; and 15 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter.
