Virginia L. Bogart

Wednesday, May 24, 2000

Former Hastings resident Virginia L. (Fergus) Bogart, 85, of Grand Junction, Colo., died Wednesday, May 24, 2000, at Larchwood Inns in Grand Junction after a short illness.

Memorial services were June 1 at Redlands United Methodist Church in Grand Junction. The remains were cremated. Callahan-Edfast Mortuary of Grand Junction was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bogart was born Nov. 12, 1914, to Cloyd and Irene Fergus in Hastings. She graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1933 and from Hastings Business College. On Dec. 29, 1941, she married Lloyd G. Bogart in Cincinnati. She moved to Grand Junction in 1972 where she retired from Dixon Electronics. She also did secretarial work. Her husband preceded her in death.

She was a member of Redlands United Methodist Church.

Survivors are two sons, Jack and Randy, both of Grand Junction; one brother, Raymond of Mesa, Ariz.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.

Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.

Franklin H. Reynolds

Tuesday, June 6, 2000

Former area resident Franklin H. Reynolds, 86, of St. Francis, Kan., died Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at Cheyenne County Hospital in St. Francis.

Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Hutchins Funeral Home in Franklin with the Rev. Russell Malchow officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Bloomington. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mr. Reynolds was born July 3, 1913, to Samuel and Hannah (Hager) Reynolds in Franklin County. On Oct. 23, 1937, he married Ruth Taylor in Lincoln, Kan. He was the deputy sheriff for 17 years and director of welfare for 23 years in Franklin County. He lived most of his life in the Bloomington area. He moved to St. Francis two years ago.

He was a member of Bloomington United Methodist Church for 75 years, St. Francis United Methodist Church, National Business Men's Association, United Methodist Men, Bloomington Board of Education and the volunteer fire department.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Colleen Gardner of St. Francis; two sisters, Verda Covey of Oxford and Dorothy Dunn of Bloomington; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Corrine Gardner; and one brother.

Wilma P. Gillilan

Sunday, May 21, 2000

Former Hardy resident Wilma P. (Paterson) Gillilan, 89, of Florence, Ore., died Sunday, May 21, 2000, at Peace Harbor Hospital in Florence.

Graveside services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Rosemound Cemetery in Republic County, Kan., with the Rev. Harold Backus officiating. Williams Funeral Home of Superior is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Gillilan was born Feb. 12, 1911, to William and Elizabeth (Jones) Paterson in Minnedosa, Manitoba, Canada. She moved with her parents to southern California in 1919. She lived in Hardy. In 1935 she married Ward D. Gillilan. She was secretary to the publisher for the Pomona Progress-Bulletin in California for 17 years. She was secretary to the dean of the School of Journalism at the University of Oregon. She also was a secretary for the California Departments of Fish and Game, State Purchasing, Property Acquisition and the State Public Works Board. In 1972 she retired and moved with her husband to Florence. On Aug. 7, 1994, her husband died.

She was a member of Executives' Secretaries Inc.

James H. Cowan

Tuesday, June 6, 2000

Former area resident James Harold Cowan, 90, of Omaha died Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at Midlands Community Hospital in Papillion.

Services are 9 a.m. Saturday at John A. Gentleman Mortuaries Westside Chapel in Omaha. Burial will be 3 p.m. Saturday at the Upland Cemetery. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. Friday at the chapel.

Mr. Cowan was born Jan. 23, 1910, to John F. and Rhoda (Copeland) Cowan in Piggott, Ark. He grew up and attended school in Upland. He graduated from Hastings College and worked for the Hastings Tribune. He married Marie Work. He was a reporter and photographer for the Omaha World-Herald in Omaha from 1945 until retiring in 1975.

Survivors are two daughters, Nadine M. Beck of Springfield, Mo., and Mary L. Gunthert of Omaha; one son, James F. of Omaha; and six grandchildren.

Weslee D. Mitten

Tuesday, June 6, 2000

Rural Lawrence resident Weslee D. Mitten, 35, died Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at his home.

Services are 2:30 p.m. Friday at Merten-Butler Mortuary chapel in Blue Hill with the Rev. Rick Cepris officiating. Private family burial will be at a later date.

Mr. Mitten was born Aug. 5, 1964, to Merlyn "Tom" and Donna (Hamann) Mitten in Omaha. On May 19, 1988, he married Kimberly A. Richardson in Miami, Okla. The moved to Lawrence in 1996.

Survivors are his wife; one stepdaughter, Kristina Svendsen of Lawrence; his mother of Omaha; his father and stepmother, Ada, of Kansas City, Mo.; one sister, Denise Jackson of Omaha; and one stepbrother, Billie Waltermate of Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Dennis Skinner

Hastings resident Dennis Skinner, 50, of 409 Ringland Road, died Wednesday, June 7, 2000, at BryanLGH Medical Center West in Lincoln.

Services are pending with Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings.

Brown Quick

Thursday, June 1, 2000

Minden resident Brown Quick, 84, died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at Kearney County Health Services Long Term Care Unit in Minden.

Services are 2 p.m. Monday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Minden with the Rev. Don Hunzeker officiating. Burial will be in the Osco Cemetery southeast of Minden. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. Sunday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.

Mr. Quick was born April 14, 1916, to Albert and Mary (Gilbert) Quick in Bloomsburg, Pa. He graduated from high school in Bloomsburg. He then worked as a tool and die maker at the Naval Shipyards in Washington, D.C. In 1946 he married Josephine Nelson and they moved to Nebraska. He worked at the Naval Ammunition Depot in Hastings, and Glantz Manufacturing and Royal Plastics, both in Minden. Later he farmed in the Osco area. In 1963 his wife died. On Aug. 29, 1963, he married Margaret Mathiasen Morris. They moved to Omaha and then to Alda in 1972. He owned and operated Brownie's Midwest Jewelry in Omaha and Alda. They returned to Minden in 1975.

He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Minden.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Bonnie Brown of Lincoln; three sons, Ted and John, both of Omaha and Mark of Hawaii; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister.

Bernhardt J. Spielman

Thursday, June 1, 2000

Hastings resident Bernhardt J. Spielman, 85, of 617 S. Denver Ave. died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are 2 p.m. Monday at Faith Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Rev. Carl Rehwaldt officiating. Private family burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be noon to 9 p.m. Sunday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings.

Mr. Spielman was born April 20, 1915, to Henry and Bertha (Eichler) Spielman in Sutton. He graduated from Sutton High School in 1935. On Aug. 21, 1937, he married Katherine V. Priebe. He was co-owner of Priebe Sheet Metal in Hastings and later worked for Hastings Plumbing.

He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and the Zion Lutheran School board in Hastings.

Survivors are his wife; five daughters, LeAnn Droppleman of Boulder, Colo., Lynette Donahue and LaRita Cassel, both of Lincoln, Linda Lawrence of Little Elm, Texas, and Loralyn Leverton of Denver; one son, Mark of Hastings; one sister, Iona Campbell of Hastings; 19 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

A memorial will be established.

Robert N. Fitz

Former Red Cloud resident Robert Nathan Fitz, 75, of Holdrege died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at his home.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Evangelical Free Church in Holdrege with the Rev. Eugene Layne officiating. Burial with military rites will be 2:30 p.m. Monday in the Red Cloud Cemetery. Visitation is 1-9 p.m. Sunday at Nelson-Harris Funeral Home in Holdrege.

Mr. Fitz was born Sept. 1, 1924, to Roy and Marie (Pegg) Fitz in Red Cloud. He graduated in 1942 from Red Cloud High School. From 1943-46 he served in the U.S. Navy in the Philippines, Saipan and Iwo Jima. In 1948 he married Arvidene Guthrie. He was a manager for O.P. Skaggs and Nash Finch corporations in Holdrege. He also owned a grocery story in Beaver City. He later managed the Superette in Holdrege. He was employed by Becton Dickinson in Holdrege for 15 years and retired in 1983.

He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 66 and the Eagles.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Nancy of Holdrege; two sons, James of Torrington, Wyo., and Steven of Holdrege; and five grandchildren.

A memorial has been established.

Frank C. Eighmy

Services for Minden resident Frank C. Eighmy, 89, who died Friday, June 2, 2000, at his home are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden with the Rev. Donald Becker officiating. Burial will be in the Minden Cemetery. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Elsie E.A. Maxon

Wednesday, June 7, 2000

Former area resident Elsie E.A. (Schoenrock) Maxon, 81, of Eustis, died Wednesday, June 7, 2000, at her home.

Services are 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Berryman Funeral Home chapel in Cozad with Smith Kite officiating. Burial will be in the Elwood Cemetery. Visitors may sign the guest book until 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Maxon was born April 7, 1919, to John A. and Adeline (Kriesel) Schoenrock in Fairbury. She graduated from Fairbury High school and then taught rural school. On Aug. 5, 1939, she married Oliver P. Maxon. They lived in Omaha, Hastings and Ong before moving to Eustis. In 1993 her husband died.

She was a member of the Church of Christ in Gothenburg.

Survivors are four sons, Jim of Kearney, David of Lincoln, Donald of Louisville and Tom of Grand Island; two daughters, Judy Melvin and Mary Munsell, both of Hastings; one brother, Alvin of Lincoln; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother and two grandchildren.

A memorial has been established.

R.L. Martin

Friday, June 9, 2000

Former rural Minden resident R.L. Martin, 89, of Axtell, died Friday, June 9, 2000, at the Methodist Memorial Home in Holdrege.

Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church in Axtell with the Rev. H. Eldin Wells officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Home Cemetery in Holdrege. Visitation is 7-8 p.m. today at Freeland-Layton Funeral Home in Axtell.

Mr. Martin was born Dec. 18, 1910, to James Henry and Honor Elizabeth (Nowlin) Martin in Corrigan, Texas. He moved with his family to Oklahoma at age 16 and then to Nebraska at age 19. On March 25, 1933, he married Eleanor Marlatt in Kearney County. He worked in construction as a heavy equipment operator. In 1941 he started farming near Minden and retired in 1975. He and his wife spent their winters in Alamo, Texas, for 20 years.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Axtell, the Grange farm organization and Good Sam Campers.

Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Gwenda Olson and Ginger Petersen, both of Holdrege; two sons, Jim of North Platte and Tony of Denver; one brother, Max of Oklahoma City; two sisters, Allie Lovett of Point Blank, Texas, and Lucy Hill of Seminole, Okla.; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers; three sisters; and one grandchild.

Danye R. Goodenough

Saturday, June 10, 2000

Former Hastings resident Danye R. Goodenough, 65, of Fremont, died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at his home.

Prayer services are 7:30 p.m. today at Moser Memorial Funeral Home chapel in Fremont. Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Church of the Nazarene in Fremont with the Rev. Tom Shaw officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the funeral home and one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.

Mr. Goodenough was born April 18, 1935, to Stillman and Edith J. (Griffin) Goodenough in Ripley, Okla. He grew up in California and moved to Hastings in 1950. He graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1953. On Oct. 26, 1954, he married Rita M. Bleyhl. From 1953-56 he served in the Nebraska National Guard in Hastings. He moved to Fremont in 1956 where he worked at the former Campbell's Soup Co. In 1973 he went to work at Valmont Industries in Valley and retired in 1999.

He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Cynthia Miller of Dallas and Lorie Goodenough of Fremont; his father of Vancouver, Wash.; one brother, Willis of Vancouver; and one sister, Edith Meridieth of Olympia, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his mother and one sister.

Edgar G. McMullen

Saturday, June 10, 2000

Grand Island resident Edgar G. McMullen, 80, died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home in Grand Island with the Rev. Jerry Quandt officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation is until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Survivors are his wife; one son; two daughters, including Shirley Huebner of Hastings; one sister; and five grandchildren.
