Monday, May 8, 2000

Aurora resident Joanie Burling, 51, died Monday, May 8, 2000, at her home after a 3 1/2-year battle with cancer.

Services were to be 10 a.m. today at the First Christian Church in Aurora with the Rev. Jay Mitchell officiating. Burial was to be in the Aurora Cemetery. Higby Mortuary of Aurora was in charge of arrangements.

Survivors are her husband; two sons; three stepdaughters, including Beth Fotinos and Brenda Stocker, both of Kenesaw; one stepson, Robert of Hastings; one brother; one grandchild; 11 stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

Aaron J. Murray

Tuesday, March 7, 2000

Mankato, Kan., resident Aaron J. Murray, 84, died Tuesday, March 7, 2000, at Jewell County Hospital in Mankato.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Harmony United Methodist Church in Mankato with the Rev. Thaddeus Hinkle officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Mankato. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Melby Mortuary in Mankato.

Mr. Murray was born Oct. 12, 1915, to James and Nettie (Diamond) Murray in Lovewell, Kan. He attended school through the eighth grade at Montrose, Kan., and graduated from auctioneer school in Mason City, Iowa. On Sept. 3, 1937, he married Charlotte Fullerton in Mankato. He worked as a farmer and auctioneer and lived in the Montrose and Mankato areas.

He was a member of the Montrose Board of Education and president of Jewell County Farm Bureau for 13 years.

Survivors are his wife; two sons, Carl of Rifle, Colo., and Dwight of Mankato; two daughters, Joanne Freeman of Mankato and Susan Hoffman of Topeka, Kan.; two brothers, Merlin "Jerry" of Mankato and Charles "Jock" of Garden City, Kan.; two sisters, Virginia Hansen and Eunice Hughes, both of Mankato; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorials will be established.

Edythe L. McCrady

Monday, March 6, 2000

Former Hastings resident Edythe L. (Dominy) McCrady, 92, of Lake San Marcos, Calif., died Monday, March 6, 2000, at Scripps Hospital in Encinitas, Calif.

Services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings with the Rev. Matt Nieman officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. There is no viewing. Book registration is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. McCrady was born July 31, 1907, to Charles and Emma (Shay) Dominy in Hansen. She graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1925 and from Mary Lanning School of Nursing in Hastings in 1928. On June 2, 1928, she married Thurlo E. McCrady in Hastings. She was a registered nurse for several years. She and her husband lived in Superior; Hastings; Brookings, S.D.; Manhattan, Kan.; Dallas; Kansas City, Mo.; Minneapolis and Fort Lee, N.J., before moving to Lake San Marcos in 1976. On May 27, 1999, her husband died.

Survivors are one son, Don of Hastings; one daughter, Kathy Jensen of Grand Junction, Colo.; one brother, Floyd of Boyce, Va.; one sister, Marion Madgett of Minneapolis; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Robert; one daughter, Marilyn; one brother; and two sisters.

Bertha D. Griess

Tuesday, March 7, 2000

Sutton resident Bertha Dorothea (Nolde) Griess, 101, died Tuesday, March 7, 2000, at the Sutton Community Home.

Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at the Salem United Methodist Church in Sutton with the Rev. Bill Jardine officiating. Burial will be in the Sutton Cemetery. Kohler Mortuary of Sutton is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Griess was born April 13, 1898, to Henry and Susann (Reuther) Nolde on a farm south of Sutton. She graduated from Sutton High School in 1916 and from the Josephine Silver Conservatory of Music. On Feb. 28, 1952, she married August M. Griess in Raton, N.M. They lived on the family farm south of Sutton. On Sept. 24, 1975, her husband died. She moved into Sutton in 1978.

She was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church, a charter member of the Dorcas Circle and a past member of the Bixby Extension Club.

Survivors are two stepdaughters, Leontina "Tina" Clancy of Hastings and Louise Sloan of Denver; one stepson, Arthur of Redlands, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by one stepdaughter, Lisetta; one stepson, Gerhardt; and one brother.

Memorials may be given to the church.

Mark 'Scott' Adams

Sunday, March 5, 2000

Former Minden resident Mark "Scott" Adams, 41, of Fayetteville, N.C., died Sunday, March 5, 2000, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville.

Memorial services were to be 2 p.m. today at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home chapel in Fayetteville with the Rev. Dr. Carl Matthews-Naylor and the Rev. James Gurkins officiating.

Mr. Adams was born June 11, 1958, to Francis M. and Betty Adams in Kearney County. He was a 1977 Minden High School graduate. He was assistant manager for Carlie C. IGA grocery in Fayetteville.

He was a member of Mass Metropolitan Community Church in Fayetteville.

Survivors are his parents of Minden; one brother, Bradley of Denver; one sister, Debra Adams of Tucson, Ariz.; and his grandmother, Geraldine Bucks of Minden.

A.J. 'Kreby' Krebsbach

Sunday, June 18, 2000

Hastings resident A.J. "Kreby" Krebsbach, 90, of The Kensington died Sunday, June 18, 2000, at Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion.

Rosary is 10 a.m. Wednesday with services following at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Hastings with the Rev. Michael K. Houlihan officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church.

Mr. Krebsbach was born Oct. 22, 1909, to Joseph and Elsie J. (Bernt) Krebsbach in Stuart. He moved with his family to Texas and then to Hastings in the 1920s. He graduated in 1929 from Hastings Senior High School and attended Hastings College. On June 6, 1936, he married Opal Gesslemen. He worked for Cushing Grocery Co. in Hastings and then for Foote Tire Co. for 28 years. He retired in 1974. On May 21, 1990, his wife died.

He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, a life member of Knights of Columbus and a past member of United Commercial Travelers, all in Hastings.

Survivors are one sister, Alba Wimbish of Redondo Beach, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by two sons, Richard and Robert; one brother; two sisters; and one grandchild.

Memorials may be given to the Hastings Catholic Schools Bus Fund.

Wanda Wilford

Monday, June 19, 2000

Superior resident Wanda VanMeter Wilford, 69, died Monday, June 19, 2000, in Superior.

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Megrue-Price Funeral Home chapel in Superior with the Revs. Arthur Taylor and James Brakett officiating. Burial will be in Washington Cemetery near Byron. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until services Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Wilford was born Aug. 8, 1930, in rural Formoso, Kan. She graduated from Mankato High School. She married John VanMeter and they lived in Superior. On Jan. 22, 1958, her husband died. On June 11, 1959, she married Everett E. Wilford in Hastings. He died May 15, 1996.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Superior.

Survivors are three sons, Thomas of Brandon, S.D., Curtis of Omaha and Bradley of Des Moines, Iowa; three stepsons, Richard and David, both of Tucson, Ariz., and Dennis of Port Orchard, Wash.; one daughter, Elizabeth Weeldreyer of Emery, S.D.; three grandchildren; several stepgrandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by one daughter, Rosanna; two stepsons, Rex and Maurice; and two brothers.

Memorials may be given in care of the family, 1374 N. Commercial Ave., Superior, NE 68978.

Vivienne B. Esberner

Thursday, June 15, 2000

Former Campbell resident Vivienne B. (Genereux) Esberner, 81, of Sun City, Ariz., died Thursday, June 15, 2000, at Boswell Hospital in Sun City.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Merten-Butler Mortuary chapel in Blue Hill with the Rev. James Schrader officiating. Burial will be in St. Anne Cemetery in Campbell. Visitation is 3-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Campbell Funeral Home of Campbell is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Esberner was born April 8, 1919, to Joseph and Eliza (Chartier) Genereux in Campbell. She graduated from Campbell High School. On Sept. 6, 1987, she married Albert R. Esberner in Sun City.

Survivors are her husband; three sons, Michael Koob of Lake Forest, Ill., Patrick Koob of Ingleside, Ill., and Keith Peters of Fremont, Calif.; two daughters, Kathleen McInnes of Point Roberts, Wash., and Joyce Newman of Yuciapa, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by 12 siblings.

Memorials may be given to St. Anne Catholic Church in Campbell.

Helen F. Anderson

Thursday, June 15, 2000

Former area resident Helen F. (Fish) Anderson, 92, of Los Alamitos, Calif., died Thursday, June 15, 2000, in Long Beach, Calif.

Graveside services are 10 a.m. Friday at the Blue Hill Cemetery. Merten-Butler Mortuary of Blue Hill is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Anderson was born Feb. 18, 1908, to Frank and Mabel Fish in Webster County. She attended Bladen High School and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She taught in Adams and Webster counties. In 1933 she married Harold B. Anderson. They moved to Hastings where she worked at Sunnyside Home. Her husband preceded her in death. She moved to Los Alamitos in 1994.

She was a member of the First Methodist Church in Hastings and Blue Hill. She also was a charter member of the Readers Guild.

Surviving is one daughter, Carole McCormac of Los Alamitos.

She was preceded in death by one son, James; and one brother.

Evalyn Schroer

Hastings resident Evalyn Schroer, 83, of 144 E. Sixth St. died at her home.

Services are pending with Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings.

Rollo G. Solomon

Friday, March 17, 2000

Minden resident Rollo Glen Solomon, 85, died Friday, March 17, 2000, at the Bethany Home in Minden.

Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Evangelical Free Church in Minden with the Rev. Jerry Classen officiating. Burial will be at the Minden Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Minden American Legion Post No. 94. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.

Mr. Solomon was born Nov. 30, 1914, to Joseph and Flora (Tubbs) Solomon in Stitzer, Wis. At age 2, he moved with his family to Maxwell. He graduated from Maxwell High School in 1933. He then farmed in Lincoln County until joining the U.S. Marine Corps in 1943. He served in the 1st Marine Division during World War II in the South Pacific Islands and in China until 1946. On April 27, 1947, he married Rhea Mae Hammans. They farmed near Gibbon. In 1951 he was recalled to active duty to serve in Korea. He returned to farming after his discharge. He retired in 1974 and moved to Minden. He moved to Bethany Home in October 1994.

He was a member of the Evangelical Free Church, the Minden American Legion Post No. 94 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart.

Survivors are his wife; one son, Melvin of Shelton; two daughters, Sheryl Lehman of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, and Adeda Younkin of Minden; two brothers, Lysle of Kearney and Orville of Ravenna; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter; three sisters; three brothers; and one grandchild.

Memorials may be given to the Progressive Supernuclear Palsy Foundation or to the church.

Velma Ground

Friday, March 17, 2000

Former Hastings resident Velma (Heath) Ground, 72, of Lakeview Nursing Home in Grand Island died Friday, March 17, 2000, at the home.

Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Kathleen Kasper officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 8 a.m. until services Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Ground was born July 30, 1927, to Mahlon and Thelma (McCoy) Heath in Lake City, Iowa. She attended schools in Iowa. She moved to Hastings in 1942 where she worked for Mode-O-Day for 14 years. In 1946 she married Raymond Dieken. In 1976 she married Jim Ground. She worked at the Hastings Regional Center until retirement in 1992. Her husband died in 1980.

Survivors are two daughters, Judith Thomas and Kathy Hamsher, both of Hastings; one stepdaughter, Cheryl Whitlock of Grand Island; one sister, Dorothy Deschane of Kearney; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Helen M. Langhorst

Saturday, March 18, 2000

Geneva resident Helen M. Langhorst, 84, died Saturday, March 18, 2000, in Hastings.

Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Geneva with the Rev. Michael Osberg officiating. Burial will be in the Geneva Public Cemetery. Visitation began at 1 p.m. today at Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva.

Mrs. Langhorst was born July 7, 1915, in Lincoln and was adopted by John S. and Hazel M. (Stover) Theimer. She married Henry J. Langhorst. He preceded her in death.
