Friday, May 14, 1999

Edgar resident Vern Earl Watson, 78, died Friday, May 14, 1999, at Integrated Health Services of Edgar.

Services are 1:30 p.m. Monday at Williams Funeral Home chapel in Edgar with the Rev. Dennis Sylte officiating. Burial will be in the Edgar Cemetery.

Mr. Watson was born May 25, 1920, to Edward O. and Elsie L. (Konzak) Watson near Edgar. He attended West Lynn School. In 1945 he married Merna L. Jacobsen. They farmed near Edgar. His wife died on July 30, 1997.

He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church of Edgar and its church board.

Survivors are two sons, Marlan V. of Superior and Alan of rural Fairfield; two daughters, Sharlotte Fluty of Goddard, Kan., and Sharaline Wilson of Plattsmouth; two sisters, Eileen Watson of Hastings and Mildred Behrens of Centralia, Wash.; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one infant son and two infant grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to St. James Lutheran Church or the Edgar Rescue Fund.

Jean M. Bunger

Friday, May 14, 1999

Minden resident Jean M. (Ejlersen) Bunger, 62, died Friday, May 14, 1999, at her home.

Services are 2 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Minden with the Rev. M. Manick Samuel officiating. Layton Funeral Home of Minden is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bunger was born April 5, 1937, to Marius and Mae Albertina (Johnson) Ejlersen in Minden. In 1955 she graduated from Minden High School. On Sept. 21, 1955, she married Dale E. Bunger in Smith Center, Kan. They lived on a farm outside of Minden until 1958 when they moved into Minden. She worked at various jobs, later working as a teacher's aid in kindergarten at the Minden Public Schools.

She was a member of United Methodist Church in Minden.

Survivors are her husband; one daughter, Christy Kosmicki of Holdrege; one son, Steven of Hildreth; one brother, Kenneth Ejlersen of Kearney; and three grandchildren.

Janet Reiber

Friday, May 7, 1999

Former Hastings resident Janet Reiber, 46, of Broomfield, Colo., died Friday, May 7, 1999, of a ruptured aorta in Broomfield.

Services were May 11 at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Broomfield with the Rev. Joseph M. Brennan officiating. Burial was in Crown Hill Cemetery in Broomfield. Rundus Funeral Home of Broomfield was in charge of arrangements.

Miss Reiber was born Aug. 24, 1952, to Maurice and Marie Reiber in Denver. She graduated from Lutheran High School in Denver. In the early 1970s, she graduated from Concordia College in Seward with a master's degree in teaching. She taught at Faith Lutheran School in Denver, Zion Lutheran School in Hastings and in Ossian, Ind., before her teaching job at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church of Broomfield. There she taught third- and fourth-grade classes for the last seven years.

Survivors are her parents of Littleton, Colo.; one sister, Diane Watkins of Westminster, Colo.; and one brother, John Reiber of Littleton.

Memorials may be given to Beautiful Savior Lutheran School.

Milton Underwood

Friday, May 14, 1999

Esbon, Kan., resident Milton Underwood, 71, died Friday, May 14, 1999, at his home.

Services are 10 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church in Esbon with the Rev. Laura Fricker officiating. Burial will be in Esbon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and Sunday at Melby Mortuary in Mankato, Kan.

Mr. Underwood was born July 5, 1927, to Charley and Elsie (Snyder) Underwood in Otego, Kan. He lived in the Otego and Esbon communities and graduated from Mankato High School. On Oct. 10, 1951, he married Arleta Heller in Odessa.

He was a member of Esbon United Methodist Church and a charter member of Esbon Lions Club.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Kathy Holliday of Wichita, Kan.; two sons, Roger of Esbon and Rickey of Concordia, Kan.; four sisters, Lorna Hajny of Burr Oak, Kan., Corrinne Johnson of Blair, Gayle Cole of Kennington, Kan., and Charlotte Frank of Silver Lake, Kan.; two brothers, Dale of Esbon and Verle of Plattsmouth; and six grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by one son, Glen, and one brother.

Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church in Esbon.

Glenvil resident JoAnn Asmus died Friday, May 14, 1999, at her home.

Services are pending with Butler-Volland Funeral Home.

Byron Y. Arnold

Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000

Former Hastings resident Byron Y. Arnold, 74, of San Diego died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at his home.

The remains were cremated. Private family burial will be at a later date at Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Clairmont Mortuary of San Diego is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Arnold was born Feb. 16, 1925, to James and Alda (Burroughs) Arnold in Red Cloud. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1943 and from Hastings College in 1951. He served in the U.S. Maritime Service and the U.S. Army Paratroopers during World War II. He then taught at Hastings Junior and Senior high schools and at Mission Bay High School in San Diego.

Survivors are three sisters, Jean Koch of Hastings, Gwen Hickins of San Diego and Lucille Ulman of Hemet, Calif.

He was preceded in death by one brother.

Vida M. Rehtus

Friday, Feb. 4, 2000

Blue Hill resident Vida M. (Booker) Rehtus, 91, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at the Blue Hill Care Center.

Services are 2 p.m. Monday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Richard Kothe officiating. Burial will be in the Blue Valley Cemetery in Ayr. Visitation is 5-9 p.m. today, 1-9 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. until services Monday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Rehtus was born March 30, 1908, to Richard and Laura (Royer) Booker near Burr Oak, Kan. She lived in Kansas until she was 15 and then moved to Nebraska. On Aug. 18, 1929, she married Ernest Rehtus in Lincoln. They farmed near Guide Rock until 1948 when they moved near Ayr to farm. In 1967 they moved into Ayr. On April 26, 1988, her husband died and she moved to Good Samaritan Village in Hastings. She later moved to Blue Hill.

She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Hastings.

Survivors are one son, Royce of Ayr; two sisters, Goldie Umbach of Superior and Viola Gerloff of Ayr; one brother, Harold of Goodland, Kan.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by four sisters; six brothers; and one grandchild.

Memorials may be given to the Blue Valley Cemetery Association.

Vivian E. Kintigh

Friday, Feb. 4, 2000

Former Tribland area resident Vivian E. (Bouray) Kintigh, 71, of Courtland, Kan., died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, in Superior.

Private family burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Superior. Visitation is 1-9 p.m. today and noon to 9 p.m. Sunday at Megrue-Price Funeral Home of Superior.

Mrs. Kintigh was born Sept. 2, 1928, to John and Mac (Hobson) Bouray in Republic County, Kan., south of Hardy. She graduated from Hardy High School. On July 20, 1947, she married Duane Kintigh in Norton, Kan. They lived for three years in Norton, then moved to Jewell County, Kan., where she lived for 50 years.

She was a member of the Webber United Methodist Church in Kansas, the United Methodist Women and taught Bible and Sunday school in Hardy and Webber.

Survivors are her husband; two daughters, Sharon Bearley of Kensington, Kan., and Debbie Staton of Pleasanton, Kan.; two sons, Michael of Fairview, Kan., and Roger of Webber; two sisters, Genevieve Hull of Hastings and Gerry Osborne of Formoso, Kan.; two brothers, Lawrence and Wilmer, both of Courtland; and 11 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Duane Robert, and one brother.

Memorials in lieu of flowers may go in care of the family, RR1 P.O. Box 101, Courtland, KS 66939.

Kenneth P. Schwartz

Friday, Feb. 4, 2000

Red Cloud resident Kenneth P. Schwartz, 77, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at the Webster County Community Hospital in Red Cloud.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Red Cloud with the Rev. Stanley Schieffer officiating. Burial will be in the Red Cloud Cemetery. Simonson-Williams Funeral Home of Red Cloud is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Schwartz was born Oct. 25, 1922, to Joseph and Melanie (Kaune) Schwartz in Potter. He graduated from Potter High School in 1940 and then served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. On Nov. 1, 1942, he married Lucille VanHousen in Hays, Kan. He was city manager of Potter from 1945-48. In 1948 he and his wife moved to Red Cloud where he retired in 1988 as city manager.

He was a member of the Red Cloud Volunteer Fire Department, the American Legion Post No. 238, VFW Sidlo Post No. 5641 and Masonic Lodge. He was a past board member of Nebraska Public Power District. He also served on the State Fire board.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Melanie Schwartz of Coos Bay, Ore.; one son, Kaune of Shepherd, Mont.; one sister, Genevieve Nugent of Loveland, Colo.; and two brothers, Clayton of Columbus and James of Palo Alto, Calif.

He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Memorials may be given to the Webster County Community Hospital.

Lora Thuman

Friday, Feb. 4, 2000

Minden resident Lora (Smith) Thuman, 94, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at the Kearney County Health Services Long Term Care Unit in Minden.

Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Minden with the Rev. Dr. Bill Hunter officiating. Burial will be in the Minden Cemetery. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Monday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.

Mrs. Thuman was born Sept. 4, 1905, to Frank and Mame (Keedle) Smith in Kearney County. She graduated from Minden High School in 1924. She married Floyd Rector. They lived in the Minden area. He preceded her in death. She married Arnie Thuman. They lived in Minden. He preceded her in death.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and its Methodist Women in Minden.

Memorials may be given to the church.

Bud Komrofske

Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000

Hastings resident Bud Komrofske, 86, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Rev. Richard Kothe officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Thursday at the church.

Mr. Komrofske was born March 16, 1913, to Frederick Julius and Louise Henrietta (Roeber) Komrofske in Westgate, Iowa. He moved with his parents in 1913 to Omaha and then to Hastings in 1920. He attended Zion Lutheran School in Hastings through eighth grade. He graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1931. On June 28, 1935, he married Evelyn P. Koch. She died Aug. 19, 1982. He married Mildred (Engel) Motley on Sept. 15, 1983. He worked for Dutton-Lainson Co. in Hastings for 38 years. He retired as foreman of the tool and die department on March 17, 1978.

Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Charlotte Consbruck of Hastings and Sandra Spielman of Lincoln; two stepsons, Gary Walther of Juniata and Royal Walther of Lincoln; two stepdaughters, Linda Hatch and Diane Jepsen, both of Hastings; one sister, Adella LaPorte; three grandchildren; 12 stepgrandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the church.

Willard A. Reichert

Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000

Sutton resident Willard Andrew Reichert, 78, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, at the Sutton Community Home.

Services are 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Kohler Mortuary chapel in Sutton with the Free German Reformed Salem Church Elders officiating. Burial will be in the Free German Reformed Salem Church Cemetery near Sutton.

Mr. Reichert was born Nov. 19, 1921, to William and Florence (Ransom) Reichert near Eldorado. He graduated from Stockham High School in 1939. He then served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II with the 4144th Army Air Force Base Unit. On Nov. 25, 1944, he married Salome Ehly in York. They farmed near Eldorado until 1980 when they retired and moved to Sutton.

He was a member of the Free German Reformed Salem Church and the Sutton American Legion Post No. 61.

Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Roselyn Korb of Sutton and Deborah Reichert of Lincoln; two sons, William of Broken Bow and Melvin of Sutton; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister; one brother; and one grandchild.

Memorials may be given to the Sutton Community Home.
