Eugene A. Hoffman

Tuesday, March 28, 2000

Former Hastings resident Eugene A. Hoffman, 66, of Lincoln died Tuesday, March 28, 2000, at the Masonic Home in Plattesmouth.

Services are 1 p.m. Monday at Metcalf Funeral Home in Lincoln with the Rev. John Sloan officiating. Burial will be at Lincoln Memorial Park with military honors by American Legion Post No. 3. Viewing is 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mr. Hoffman was born May 27, 1933, to Rolland and Fredia Hoffman in rural Adams County. He married Beverly Phelps. He served in the U.S. Navy, U.S. Navy Reserve and the U.S. Air Guard. He retired in 1997 after 38 years of service in the maintenance department at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

He was a member of the Eastridge Presbyterian Church, Sesostris Shrine, George Washington Masonic Lodge No. 250 A.F. & A.M. and American Legion Post No. 3.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Marcia McMurtry of Marana, Ariz.; one son, Arthur of Morehead, Ky.; his mother of Hastings; one brother, James of Hastings; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father and one brother.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Elizabeth M. Shelley

Wednesday, March 29, 2000

Hastings resident Elizabeth M. (Larson) Erickson Shelley, 95, of Good Samaritan Village died Wednesday, March 29, 2000, at Good Samaritan Village.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion with the Rev. Terry Otto officiating. Burial will be at Hope Cemetery in Newman Grove. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Shelley was born April 18, 1904, to Edward and Carolyn (Abrahamson) Larson in Petersburg. She attended rural Petersburg elementary schools. On March 12, 1923, she married Ralph Kenneth Erickson in Council Bluffs. They farmed near Newman Grove and Albion until 1947 when her husband died. In 1956 she moved to Lincoln where she worked as a cook at Bryan Memorial Hospital. On Nov. 18, 1969, she married Mitchell Shelley. They moved to Hastings in 1977. In 1989 her husband died. She moved to Good Samaritan Village in 1995.

She was a member of the Methodist Church.

Survivors are two daughters, Jean Cook of Las Vegas and Raye Stutzman of Hastings; one stepdaughter, Sharon Shelley of Lincoln; four sons, Mike Erickson of Mission, Texas, Keith Erickson of Lincoln, Virgil Erickson of Hastings and Gary Erickson of Norfolk; one brother, Leonard Larson of Victorville, Calif.; one sister, Sally Baleme of Modesto, Calif.; 22 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Donald and Dean; four sisters; and two brothers.

Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church in Albion.

Donald R. Smith

Tuesday, March 28, 2000

Hastings resident Donald R. Smith, 67, of 1308 N. Baltimore Ave. died Tuesday, March 28, 2000, at his home.

Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Earl Higgins officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until services Friday at the funeral home.

Mr. Smith was born Dec. 16, 1932, to Solomon and Ruth (Davis) Smith in Marshalltown, Iowa. He graduated from Marshalltown Senior High School in 1951. On April 5, 1957, he married Jean Setzer in Marshalltown. He served with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during the Korean War for three years. He retired from Dunham Bush Manufacturing Co. in Marshalltown and moved to Hastings in 1988. He worked for Marshalltown Instruments for a short while in Hastings, where he was a supervisor in the shipping and receiving department.

He was a former member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and the Durham Bush Employees Credit Union, all in Marshalltown.

Survivors are his wife; one son, Michael of Hastings; one brother, William of Marshalltown; three sisters, Mary Jane Calkins and Betty Smith, both of Marshalltown, and Dorothy Hill of Laurel, Iowa; and one grandchild.

He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Memorials may be given to the Mary Lanning Hospice in Hastings.

Elmer R. Wilken

Monday, March 27, 2000

Hildreth resident Elmer R. Wilken, 80, died Monday, March 27, 2000, at the Bethany Home in Minden.

Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hildreth with the Rev. Kim Stover officiating. Burial will be at St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery near Hildreth. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Jelden-Layton Funeral Home in Hildreth.

Mr. Wilken was born June 6, 1919, to John and Minnie (Harms) Wilken in Hildreth. He attended Lakeview School near Hildreth and graduated from Hildreth High School in 1936. He farmed with his father and later was a gas station attendant in Hildreth. On Feb. 1, 1942, he married Lucille Hemje in Hildreth. From 1942-46 he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps at Randolph Field in San Antonio. After he returned from the service, he worked as a gas station attendant. He then was a soil conservation technician for the Soil Conservation Office in Furnas County from 1950 until his retirement in 1980. He and his wife moved back to Hildreth in 1984. He moved to Minden in 1997.

He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. He was a Sunday School teacher and a board member at St. Peter's Lutheran Church for several years. He was a charter member of the Hildreth Lions Club and the American Legion Club in Hildreth. He was also a member of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Survivors are his wife; three sons, James of Edinburg, Texas, Dennis of Norton, Kan., and Michael of Tucson, Ariz.; two daughters, Cheryl Nelsen of Bertrand and Diane Deselms of Cambridge; two brothers, Orval of Franklin and Lester of Alliance; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister.

Memorials may be given to the Hospice, Hildreth Senior Center or the Hildreth Volunteer Fire Department.

Diana Prochaska

Sunday, March 26, 2000

Hastings resident Diana (Knerl) Prochaska, 44, died Sunday, March 26, 2000, at her home.

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Ravenna with the Rev. Mark Cadenbach officiating. Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery in Ravenna. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. today at Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna.

Mrs. Prochaska was born Jan. 4, 1956, to Raymond and Neva (Struebing) Knerl in Grand Island. She attended Union Ridge Rural School and graduated from Ravenna High School in 1974. She also was a graduate of Central Community College-Grand Island. On Sept. 11, 1976, she married Roger Prochaska in Grand Island. They lived in Ravenna where she helped start and worked at Learn 'n Care Daycare. She moved to Hastings in 1996.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Survivors are two daughters, Wendy Prochaska of College Station, Texas, and April Norvell of Grand Island; her parents of Ravenna; two brothers, John of Ravenna and Randall of Houston; and one grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

Memorials may be given to the family or the Lupus Fund.

Alfred K. Brase

Friday, March 24, 2000

Hebron resident Alfred K. Brase, 67, died Friday, March 24, 2000, at Thayer County Health Services in Hebron.

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hebron Memorial Funeral Home in Hebron with the Rev. William Thornton officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Hebron. Visitation begins at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Brase was born Dec. 17, 1932, to Theodore and Esther (Reise) Brase in Deshler. He attended school in Davenport. He worked at Rose Hill Hatchery in Davenport and operated a mechanic shop in Angus for four years. On Sept. 5, 1963, he married Mary F. Corliss. They later divorced.

Survivors are two sons, Paul of Hebron and Andrew of Deshler; and one brother, Leonard of Juniata.

A memorial has been established.

James D. Smith

Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000

Hastings resident James D. Smith, 65, of 326 North Shore Drive died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at his home.

Services are 2 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Hastings with the Rev. Dr. Sam Rathod officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and 8-11 a.m. Friday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings.

Mr. Smith was born Feb. 11, 1935, to Harry and Helen (Vinnedge) Smith in Berwyn. He moved to Clay Center at an early age and graduated from high school there in 1952. He attended Hastings College from 1952-54. He then served in the U.S. Army from 1954-56 in Germany and France. He returned to Hastings College in 1956 and graduated in 1959. He played for three years with the St. Louis Cardinals organization during college. On Dec. 18, 1957, he married Sheila Darby. At Hastings Senior High School he was assistant basketball coach for three years, assistant football coach for seven years, head basketball coach for eight years, head football coach for two years and head golf coach for seven years. He retired after 36 years of teaching.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Wednesday morning prayer group. He also was a member of Lochland Country Club.

Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Kathy Perdew of Hastings and Terri McAllister of Omaha; one sister, Donna Sherbeck of Ravenna; five grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister.

Memorials may be given to the church youth program or the Mary Lanning Hospice in Hastings.

Helen H. Nelson

Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000

Minden resident Helen H. (Jorgensen) Nelson, 81, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at Bethany Home in Minden.

Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Fredericksburg Lutheran Church near Minden with the Rev. Ronald Ebb officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. Thursday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.

Mrs. Nelson was born June 6, 1918, to William and Anna (Tomsen) Jorgensen in Valley County. She moved with her family to Kearney County at age 3. She attended the Hinderlong School and graduated from Minden High School in 1935. She worked for Warp Publishing Co. in Minden for seven years. On Aug. 9, 1942, she married Donald Nelson. They lived near Bertrand until 1976 when they moved to Oxford. She worked with her husband in farming and the blacksmith business. They moved to Bethany Home in 1997. Her husband died in 1998.

She was a member of the Fredericksburg Lutheran Church and a former member of the Lutheran Church in Bertrand.

Survivors are one daughter, Janice Coons of Lexington; two brothers, William Jorgensen II of Minden and Alden Jorgensen of Holstein; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.

Memorials may be given to the church or Bethany Home in Minden.

Bell F. Nienhueser

Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000

Hastings resident Bell F. (Petersen) Nienhueser, 77, of 1235 N. Laird Ave. died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at BryanLGH Medical Center East in Lincoln.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Faith Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Rev. Carl Rehwaldt officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is 3-9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.

Mrs. Nienhueser was born Oct. 16, 1922, to Olaf and Martha Petersen in Holstein. She graduated from Holstein High School in 1940. On May 25, 1941, she married Wilfred H. Nienhueser at Wanda Lutheran Church in rural Adams County. They farmed in the Holstein area until her husband retired eight years ago and they moved to Hastings.

She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church.

Survivors are her husband; one son, Larry of Gunnison, Colo.; one daughter, Barbara Johnson of Ord; one brother, Woodrow of Holstein; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the church or the donor's choice.

Mary K. Marquart

Monday, Feb. 28, 2000

Oak resident Mary K. (Wood) Marquart, 59, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, in Oak.

Graveside services are 11 a.m. Friday at Oak Grove Cemetery in Oak with the Rev. Jim Dresser officiating. A memorial service will be 5 p.m. March 14 at Timberline Church in Fort Collins, Colo., with the Rev. Dary Northrop officiating. There is no viewing or visitation. Price Funeral Home of Hebron is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Marquart was born July 10, 1940, to Winter W. and Dixie (McCallie) Wood in Breckenridge, Texas. She graduated from Breckenridge High School and North Texas State University. On Nov. 24, 1962, she married Merlin Marquart in Breckenridge. She taught in elementary schools for 37 years at Midland, Texas, and Fort Collins. She also was a substitute teacher for school in Nuckolls, Thayer and Clay counties.

She was a member of Timberline Church and the Delta Gamma sorority.

Survivors are her husband; two daughters, Ingrid Einspahr of Sidney and Rachel Nelson of Fort Collins; one sister, Margaret McCathren of Abilene, Texas; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorials have been established to the family's choice.

Weston V. Simmering

Monday, Feb. 28, 2000

Former Hastings resident Weston Vernold Simmering, 81, of Ruston, La., died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, in Ruston.

Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston with the Revs. Rolly Walker and Fred Wideman officiating. Burial will be in St. Rest Cemetery in Dubach, La. Visitation is until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Simmering was born June 4, 1918, to Meent Fred and Theda (Bruns) Simmering in Colorado Springs, Colo. He married Helen Stone. He served in the U.S. military during World War II.

He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Hale Memorial Sunday School class, Ruston Noon Lion's Club, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the Masonic Lodge No. 317 in Hastings.

Survivors are his wife; one son, Rick of Pineville, La.; one brother, Herschel of Hastings; one sister, Lois Cornelius of Hastings; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister and one grandchild.
