Lois F. Paxton
CALLAWAY - Lois F. Paxton, 88, died May 27, 2001, in Callaway Good Samaritan Center.

She was born Oct. 29, 1912, to Glenn and Grace Carpenter Stryker at Rising City. She moved with her family when she was seven to Custer County east of Callaway then to the Morning Star Community. She attended rural grade school and graduated from Callaway High School in 1932. After taking the normal training, she taught school for three years.

On Aug. 25, 1935, she married Donald McFate at the Morning Star and they lived in the Stop Table Community. He preceded her in death.

She was a member of the Morning Star Church where she was the pianist for many years. She was a member of the Morning Star Ladies Missionary and the Open Door Extension Club.

On May 28, 1968, she married Kermit Paxton at her home in Stop Table. They lived on his ranch north of Ringgold for four years.

They attended the Hall Community Church before moving just west of Stapleton in 1972, where they attended the Presbyterian Church.

She was a member of the North Platte Gideon Chapter, the Stapleton Farm Bureau and the Banner Mothers Club.

Mrs. Paxton is survived by her husband, Kermit; a daughter, Grace Ann Booker of Denver; three stepdaughters, Anna Mae (Lester) Wycoff of Barron, Wis., Joan (Tuck) Farmer and Colleen (Dale) Pettit, all of Tryon; a son, Monte Joe (Madeline) of Callaway; two stepsons, Jim (Bonita) of Hillsdale, Wis., and Leland (LeeAnn) of Stapleton; a sister, Marjorie Bassett of North Platte; two sisters-in-law, Mae Paxton and Fay (Dan) Connell, all of Stapleton; a brother-in-law, Victor (Hazel) Paxton of Stapleton; 21, grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Amy, Laura and Fern; and two brothers, Elmo and Billie.

Memorials are suggested to the Gideons International, KJLY Radio Ministry or the donor's choice.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Presbyterian Church in Stapleton with the Revs. Donald Stryker and Buddy Scufield officiating. Burial will be in the Stop Table Cemetery southwest of Callaway.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at the Arnold Funeral Home and from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 10 a.m. to service time Friday at the church.

Arnold Funeral Home is in charge.

Victor 'Vic' Schmidt
ANSLEY - Victor "Vic" Harold Schmidt, 75, died May 28, 2001, at the Sandhills Nursing Home in Broken Bow.

He was born Nov. 23, 1925, to Theodore and Esther Zimbleman Schmidt in Colome, S.D. In 1934, the family moved to Ansley where his father ran the Gambles Store. He attended school in Ansley until joining the U.S. Navy during World War II.

On June 4, 1949, he married Mardell Hoffman. When his father retired he assumed ownership of the Gamble Store. He was a member of the Volunteer Fire Department and the American Legion Club. For 20 years he was a mail carrier. He retired in 1987, and enjoyed spending time hunting, fishing and playing solitaire.

He is survived by a daughter, Vicky (Gary) Story of Kearney; a son Jack (Julie) of Ansley; three sisters, Roberta "Bertie" Lee of Ansley, Irene Patterson of Kimball and Darlene Luther of New Mexico; a brother, Roger Schmidt of Ansley; four grandchildren, Marci Story Asche of Omaha, Adam Story of Hastings, Tara Schmidt of Denver and Jill Schmidt of Ansley; brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; nieces; nephews and many friends.

Memorials are suggested to the Ansley Volunteer Fire Department.

Private family services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Ansley.

Please join the family for a gathering of friends at noon Wednesday at the United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall in Ansley.

Marie A. Smith
Marie Agnus Smith, 82, of North Platte died May 26, 2001, at the Great Plains Regional Medical Center.

She was born Sept. 20, 1918, on a farm near Weeping Water to Joseph and Grace Erhart Miller. She attended school in Manley and Weeping Water.

On Nov. 9, 1936, she married Phillip Smith in Manley. The couple moved to North Platte in 1937, and had been residents since.

She was a member of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church, the American Legion Auxiliary and Union Pacific Old Timers. She enjoyed fishing, crafts, cooking, dancing and her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband; two daughters, Judy (Fred) Fisher of Lincoln and Carol (Woody) Boyer of North Platte; a son, Ray (Tressie) of North Platte; three sisters, Dorothy Bourelle of Omaha, Ellen Voss and JoAnn (Myron) Richardson, both of Weeping Water; a brother, Merv (Barb) Miller of Michigan; 19 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and a special friend, Betty McElrath.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Phillip LeRoy; a daughter-in-law, Virginia Smith; a sister, Jackie Kelly; and a brother, Frank Miller.

Memorials are suggested to the Holy Spirit Catholic Church or to the Callihan Cancer Center in North Platte. Condolences to the family may also be sent to asfh@kdsi.net.

Christian Wake Services will be at 7 p.m. today at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. today at the church with the Rev. Art Faesser as celebrant. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens.

Elmer R. Treat
HYANNIS - Elmer R. Treat, 92 of Hyannis died May 25, 2001, at the Crossroads Assisted Living in Alliance.

He was born May 17, 1909, at Thedford to Charles and Inez Hulbert Treat.

On Oct. 5, 1940, he married Opal Loomis in North Platte. She preceded him in death in 1991.

He lived and worked in the Sandhills all his life.

Mr. Treat is survived by a daughter, Joanne (Bob) Tobin of Portland, Ore.; two grandsons, Doug and Don Tobin, both of Portland; two granddaughters, Ashley and Cheyenne Tobin, both of Portland; two sisters, Nina Tognarelli and Ann Wheeler, both of Salem, Ore.; and a nephew, Gordon (Edna) Anderson of Anselmo and their children, Julie, Ann, Kim, Russ, Doug, Joan and Robin.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the Hyannis Cemetery with the Rev. Linda Martin officiating. The family requests casual attire.

Bates-Gould Funeral Home of Alliance is in charge.

John H. 'Jack' Walker Jr.
LEXINGTON - John H. "Jack" Walker Jr. of Lexington died May 27, 2001, at the Tri-County Hospital in Lexington. He was 60.

He was born Jan. 13, 1941, at Lexington to John H. Sr. and Frances Haskill Walker. He grew up in the Elm Creek area where he attended school.

On May 29, 1960, he married Patty Chandler at the United Methodist Church in Lexington. They lived in Lexington where he drove a truck for several companies and helped local farmers.

His hobbies included collecting toys, visiting with people around town and spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Tia (Kevin) McVicker of Brandon, Colo., and Jody (David) Fread of Lexington; a son, Brad (Cindy) of Lexington; six grandchildren, Seth, Stephanie and Logan McVicker, Heather and Joe Walker and Sam Fread; his father; and a brother, Bob (Donna) Walker of Kearney.

Mr. Walker was preceded in death by his mother; and an infant granddaughter, Skyler McVicker.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington with the Rev. Cathy Cole officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery at Lexington.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington.

Dorothy J. Bauler
SAN DIEGO - Dorothy J. Bauler of San Diego, mother of Cathy Hougan of North Platte, died May 14, 2001, in San Diego. She was 71.

She was born Dec. 16, 1929, in San Diego to Rudolph J. and Caroline Haubert Dunne. She graduated from Sweetwater High School in National City, Calif. She then enlisted in the U.S. Navy.

She served four years as a dental technician and was honorably discharged.

On Oct. 2, 1954, she married Erwin H. Bauler at the Naval Training Center in San Diego. During her tour in the Navy, she was chosen as an all-star for the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service softball and basketball teams. She had been recruited to play women's professional baseball but she chose to raise a family instead.

Mrs. Bauler enjoyed watching her grandchildren play ball and spent the fall of 1999 in North Platte so she could watch her oldest grandson play football for North Platte High School.

Her hobbies included gardening, fishing and spending time with her family following her retirement from the security department at the Navy Exchange Naval Air Station Miramar in February 1999.

She was an avid San Diego Padres fan.

She is survived by her daughters, Cathy (Russ) Hougan of North Platte and Nancy Bauler of San Diego; a son, Jeffrey A. Sr. of Santee, Calif.; and six grandchildren, Andrew and Karlene Hougan of North Platte and Jeff Jr., Joey, Mindy and Cassie, all of Santee.

She was preceded in death by her husband in September 1971; a son, Greg, in March 1979; her parents; and two brothers.

Mass of Christian burial was May 18, 2001, in San Diego, with burial in Mount Hope Cemetery with full military honors.

Virginia Mae Durbin
GLOBE, Ariz. - Virginia Mae Durbin, daughter of Elsie Watkins of North Platte, died May 26, 2001, at her home in Globe, Ariz. She was 62.

She was born Dec. 22, 1938, in North Platte to Harry and Elsie Diener.

Mrs. Durbin was a 43-year resident of Globe. She owned a health-food store and was the author of many health and nutrition articles. With her "loving hands" she healed people with chronic health problems. In her free time, she enjoyed collecting dolls and jewelry.

Surviving her is her husband, Douglas Durbin of Globe; a daughter, Lori (Danny) Lopez of California; four sons, Troy (Jacque) of Globe, Kirk (Wendy) of California, Justin of Lakeside, Ariz., and Lance (Becky) of Maryland; her mother, Elsie Watkins of North Platte; a sister, Nancy (Louis) Stoeger of North Platte; two brothers, Gale (Catherine) Diener of China and Wayne Diener of Florida; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the LDS Globe (Ariz.) Stake Center.

Miles-Damron Funeral Home in Globe is in charge.

Leland O. Kitt
LINCOLN - Leland O. Kitt of Lincoln, brother of Phyllis Theobald of Imperial and Joyce Schweink of Wauneta, died May 29, 2001. He was 83.

He was born in Wauneta to Lee and May Carpenter Kitt.

Mr. Kitt was a retired farmer and carpenter, member of the Methodist Church and a lifetime board member of the Rural Electrification Administration at the local, state and national level.

Survivors also include two sons, Gary (Kathleen) of Lincoln and Stuart (Lucille) of St. Charles, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Charline and Lois, and an infant daughter.

Memorials are suggested to the Wauneta Methodist Church or to Alzheimer's research.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Wauneta Methodist Church with burial in the Riverside Cemetery at Wauneta.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church Saturday.
