Maynard A. Boltz

Maynard A. Boltz, 87 of Grand Island died Monday, June 11, 2012 at St. Francis Skilled Care.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Pauls Lutheran Church. Reverend Sylvia High Karlsson will officiate. Burial will be at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at All Faiths Funeral Home.

Mr. Boltz was born icon on March 3, 1925 on a family farm south of Grand Island the son of Albert and Augusta (Wiese) Boltz.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Lila Jean Boltz on October 11, 2009.

Survivors include daughter, Karen Autrey of Lincoln and son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Judy Boltz of Grand Island and sister, Adeline Stelk of Grand Island.

Other survivors include grandchildren and their spouses, Angie and Chris Varela, Lt. Col. Jeffrey and Sara Autrey, Cody Boltz, Megan and Randy Young; great-grandchildren, Eric, Brandon, Isak and Kate; aunt, Mildred Dibbern of Grand Island; brother-in-law and his wife, Harold and Fern Scheel of Newhall, CA and special friend, LaMae Stoltenberg of Grand Island.

Maynard was raised on the family farm and graduated from Grand Island Senior High School. He entered the United States Army on June 25, 1945 serving as a medic in the Army Transportation Corps. He was honorably discharged on December 12, 1946. Maynard had recently returned from Washington D.C. as part of the WWII Hero Flight.

On June 15, 1947 he was united in marriage to Lila Jean Scheel. They made their home in Grand Island where Maynard worked for Stuhr Museum retiring after 22 years of service.

Memberships include St. Pauls Lutheran Church, Platt-Duetsche Society and American Legion. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, wood working, traveling, restoring old tractors and cars and gardening.

Memorials are suggested to the Disabled American Veterans Association.

Richard E. "Dick" Bortz

Richard E. “Dick” Bortz, 85, of Grand Island, died Friday, March 2, 2012 at the Grand Island Veteran’s Home.

A memorial service will be on Saturday, March 10, 2012 at 11a.m. at the First Christian Church in Grand Island. Reverend Dr. Scott Taylor and Reverend Dr. Carter Aikin will officiate. Military honors will be provided by the United Veterans Honor Guard. Burial of ashes will be at a later date in Great Bend, Kansas.

There will be no visitation. All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family.

Richard was born icon September 30, 1926 in Hutchinson, Kansas, the son of Andrew and Lydia (Stang) Bortz.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 64 years, Ruth; their son and daughter-in-law, Robert “Bob” and Karen Bortz and their daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn “Kat” Bortz and Earl Haworth, all of Grand Island.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Marion and Eugene.

Richard grew up on a dairy farm near Grand Bend and graduated from Great Bend High School. He attended Kansas State University and graduated with a degree in chemistry.

He entered the United States Navy on May 22, 1944, served in the North Atlantic and South Pacific theatres and was honorably discharged July 15, 1946.

Richard was united in marriage to Ruth Dietz on August 17, 1947 in Great Bend. Following their marriage they lived in Manhattan, KS, Pratt, KS, Las Cruces, NM and Wichita, KS. They moved to Grand Island in 2007 to be close to their family.

He was employed by Kansas Farm Bureau and New Mexico Farm Bureau, retiring in 1987. Richard and Ruth then managed the La Quinta Inn (East) in Wichita, KS until retiring in 1993.

Richard was active in the United Methodist Church in Garden City, Manhattan, Pratt and Wichita, all in Kansas, and Las Cruces, New Mexico and was a member of the First Christian Church in Grand Island when he passed away. He was very involved in the Boy Scouts of the Santa Fe Council in Southwest Kansas; was a Master Mason; a board member of the Wichita Convention Bureau; was active in the Wichita Lodging Association and on the City of Wichita Convention and Visitors Bureau Committee. Richard was also a member of the Rotary, Elks and Lions Clubs.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Heart Association.

Chuck Bosselman

Chuck Bosselman, 67 of Grand Island, died Saturday, January 7, 2012 at St. Francis Medical Center following a courageous battle with cancer.

A celebration of life service will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Grand Island. The Reverend Jay Vetter will officiate.

To honor Chuck’s wishes cremation will take place and family entombment of ashes will be at the Grand Island Cemetery.

There will be no visitation.

All Faiths Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Chuck was born icon in Grand Island, Nebraska to Fred and Maxine (Forbes) Bosselman; the second of four children. Chuck attended Kearney State College and married Janet Weise in 1965. They had two children, Charlie and Brandi. Chuck became General Manager of the Grand Island I-80 Bosselman Truck Plaza in 1967. Chuck was an integral part of broadening the family business from just Truck Stops to all of the businesses that comprise the Bosselman Companies. He was a key reason that the business’ have survived and continue to thrive in their 4th generation of the Bosselman Family.

Charles D. (Chuck) Bosselman was a second generation business owner and currently Chairman of the Board of Bosselman’s. Bosselman’s has been in business since 1948 when Chuck’s father, Fred Bosselman, opened up the first Bosselman location, known as Bosselman Eaton, on the Lincoln Highway in Grand Island, Nebraska. Today, the Bosselman Companies have grown to include:

* 8 Bosselman Travel Centers
* 6 Grandma Max's & Max's Highway Diner Restaurants
* 46 Pump & Pantry convenience stores
* 1 Hampton Inn, 6 Motel 6s and 3 Pump & Pantry Motels
* 34 Boss Shops
* Sam Bass' Saloon & Steakhouse
* Schmooter's Bar & Casino
* Food courts including Subway, Little Caesars, Caribou Coffee, and Wendy's
* The Nebraska Danger Indoor Professional Football Team
During the early 70’s, Chuck raced late model race cars and won many championships, including the Nebraska State Fair Championship. He then partnered up with the American Motors Company to race the only AMC dirt track race car at the time.
In 1988, Chuck brought together a handful of truck stop industry leaders and established “Ambest” (America’s Best Truck Stops), made up of a cooperative network of 150+ of the nation’s best independent truck stops. Ambest is still the industry leader in this demographic market.
In the late 1980’s, Chuck decided it was time to get back into the restaurant business, and after 20 years of being out of it, he authorized the development of the Grandma Max’s Restaurant concept. This concept has gone on to grow to 6 locations in 4 states, winning numerous industry awards for food quality and service.
In the early 1990’s, Chuck also green-lighted the Bosselman Company’s move into fast food franchises. His Subway in Grand Island was one of the first Subways ever opened in a truck stop, which started a trend that has expanded in his own locations and in truck stops around the country.
In 2004, Chuck negotiated a deal with the nation’s largest diesel fuel retailer, Pilot Travel Centers, and established his locations as licensed Pilot locations. This deal secured the Bosselman Travel Centers as the exclusive Pilot licensed locations in their markets and led to a boom in business.
In 2011, Chuck was the driving force in establishing the Uni-Maxx Truck Care Network. This full service truck repair shop network includes 34 Boss Truck Shops and 38 Wingfoot Truck Care Centers (owned by Goodyear). This Uni-Maxx Network is now the nation’s second largest truck care network with 72 locations coast to coast.

Chuck based his business decisions on the foundations of Pride, Cleanliness, Fun, Integrity and Friendliness, and earned a reputation by hard work, sweat, and commitment to the customer. Chuck's vision of being the BEST was hard-earned and well-deserved. Chuck did it all to ensure the company’s success - from cleaning restrooms, changing tires, hauling fuel and whatever else needed to be done, and he didn’t ask any employee to do what he wasn't willing to do himself. Because of his unending supply of energy, charisma, moxie, and intelligence, Chuck was asked to join several boards including, Chairman of the Board & Founder - American's Best Travel Centers (AMBEST), 1992; Board of Directors - Grand Island Community College Foundation, 2011 – present; Board of Directors - Hall County Tourism Counsel, 1990 – 1992; Board of Directors - Mid Nebraska Raceways, 1982 and Board of Directors - Fonner Park, 2009 – present.

His father, Fred H. Bosselman; mother-in-law, Lee Unzicker and three nephews and a niece preceded him in death.

In lieu of flowers, a Chuck D. Bosselman Scholarship Fund will be established.

Regis D. Bryer

Regis D. Bryer, 70, of Grand Island, passed away Wednesday, June 20, 2012 at Saint Francis Medical Center Medical Center with his family by his side.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 25, 2012 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Wolbach. Regis’s cousin The Reverend Dr. Nicki Jo McIntyre will officiate. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery in Wolbach with full Military Honors rendered by the United Veterans Honor Guard and the U.S. Air Force.

Visitation with family greeting friends will be from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at All Faiths Funeral Home.

Regis was born icon December 14, 1941 at Wolbach, NE the son of Glen and Lola Mae (McIntyre) Bryer.

Survivors are his wife of 44 years, Pat; daughter and son-in-law, Amanda and Rick Landenberger of Omaha; sons and daughter-in-law, Derek and Aimee Bryer of Orange County, CA and Brett Bryer of Lincoln; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ron and Sandy Bryer of St. Paul, Daryl and Cherie Bryer of Lincoln, and David and Cheryl Bryer of Lincoln.

Those also left to cherish his memory are four grandchildren, Katilyn Bryer, Emily Bryer, Quinn Landenberger and Brynn Landenberger.

His parents; a twin brother, Dennis, and an infant brother preceded him in death.

Regis graduated from Wolbach High School. He entered the United States Air Force in January of 1961 and retired from service in June of 1982.

On November 11, 1967 he was united in marriage to Patricia Coubrough in London, England. After various military transfers to bases throughout the U.S., the couple made their home in Grand Island in 1982. Regis and his twin brother started United Systems Carpet Cleaning until his retirement in 2004.

Regis is a member of the VFW, the American Legion, and a 30 year member of Jack Rabbit Municipal Golf Course. He had a passion for golf and loved to ride his motorcycle. He also enjoyed working on his garden patio where he and Pat soent so mch time together.

Memorials may be sent to the family to be distributed at a later date.

Carol Elizabeth Cain

Carol Elizabeth Cain, 93 of Grand Island, passed away, August 11, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Society in Grand Island.

Service will be at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, August, 14 in the Gollaher Chapel at Trinity United Methodist Church. Reverend Jay Vetter will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Cemetery.Visitation will be one hour prior to service.

All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family.

Mrs. Cain was born icon August 4, 1919 at Humboldt, IA the daughter of Myron and Martha (Millward) Whipple.

Survivors include one sister, Esther Hill of Fort Dodge, IA; and 9 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; 1 sister, Alice; and 2 brothers, Ralph and Warren.

Carol was raised in Humboldt, IA and graduated from Rutland High School at Rutland, IA in 1937. After graduation she moved to Grand Island to attend the Grand Island Business College. She was baptized in the Methodist church in 1920 and joined Trinity United Methodist Church in Grand Island in 1936.

She was united in marriage to Ormal C. Drake in May 30, 1947 at Belleville, KS. Ormal passed away in 1971. In May 3, 1974 she was united in marriage to Douglas Cain in Aurora until his passing that same year.

Carol worked in the office at Sink & Baer Cleaners from 1937 to 1972. In 1981 she joined the staff of Richman-Gordan and later worked at the ½ Price Store on a part-time basis in the Accounting Department.

She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Eagles Auxiliary and a volunteer for many years with the American Red Cross.

Memorials are suggested to Trinity United Methodist Church or The American Red Cross.

Walter W. Carpenter

Walter W. Carpenter, 71 of Grand Island died Wednesday, July 4, 2012 at home with his family by his side.

Celebration of life service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Evangelical Free Church in Grand Island. Reverend Gary Schulte will officiate.

Mr. Carpenter’s wish was to donate his body to the Nebraska Anatomical Board. There will be no visitation. All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family.

Mr. Carpenter was born icon January 21, 1941 at Valentine, NE the son of Willis and Beverly ( Campbell) Carpenter.

Survivors include his wife, Maureen; sons, Waco and Shad; stepchildren, Susan and Rob Schald, Jane and Daren Wilkinson, Steven and Laura Scripter; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Deb, Garry and Paula and sister and brother-in-law, Sherry and Bob Stevens.

Other survivors are grandsons, Wryan, Eli and Trey Carpenter; step grandchildren, Melissa, Charlie and Nick Wilkinson and Zachary and Mackenzie Scripter and great-grandchildren, Savannah and Bentley Carpenter.

Walter grew up on the family ranch near Kilgore, NE attending Rural School District 182, Valentine High School and Chadron State College. Walter participated and placed on the Bull Riding team during both high school and college. In 1960 he married Kathy Walters. The family lived in Alliance, Valentine and Kearney and at Johnson Lake.

Walter was a soil conservation manager in Cherry County and then was sales and owner and operator of Carpenter Construction for 35 years.

In 1998 he moved to Grand Island where he continued building and remodeling homes. In 1999 he married Maureen Scripter and retired in 2005. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Nebraska Home Builders Association, Evangelical Free Church, Liederkrantz and the Platt-Duestche. He was an avid golfer, hunter and fisherman; also enjoyed playing cards and traveling.

Memorials are suggested to the church or Central Plains Chapter of the American Red Cross.
