Douglas L. Brown Jr.

ROCHESTER - Douglas L. Brown Jr., 25, of 171 Chestnut Hill Road, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, in Maine Medical Center, Portland, Maine, from injuries sustained in a snowmobile accident which occurred in New Durham earlier in the day.

He was born July 22, 1977, in Exeter, the son of Douglas L. Brown of Brownfield, Maine, and the late Beverly J. (Munroe) Brown, and was raised in Seabrook.

He attended Seabrook schools and Winnacunnet High School.

Mr. Brown was employed by Lydall Paper Co. in Rochester for 2 1/2 years and had previously worked as a mechanic at Pat's Getty in Seabrook for five years.

He was a member of the American Motorcross Association.

In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, Tammy (Ross) Brown of Rochester, and the child they are expecting; one son, Travis D. Brown of Rochester; one daughter, Felisha Lee Brown of Rochester; three sisters, Rhonda Brown of Exeter, Whonda Wolterbeek of Hampton and Catherine Brown of Epping; one nephew; and a best friend, Matt Perkins.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Tammy and Douglas Brown Jr. Family Fund, c/o Bank of New Hampshire, 1 Old Dover Road, Rochester, NH 03867 or at any Bank of New Hampshire.

Earl S. Carter

KINGSTON - Earl S. Carter, 76, of Main Street, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, at his home after a sudden illness.

He was born March 5, 1926, in Kingston, the son of the late Harry L. and Ida P. (Chellis) Carter and was a lifelong resident of Kingston.

He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.

Mr. Carter delivered oil for W.S. Clark & Sons, Kingston, for 44 years and was formerly a road agent in Kingston.

He was an active member of the Kingston Fire Department since 1945, serving as a truck engineer, deputy forest fire warden, assistant chief and chief. He was also a member of the Kingston Police Department for many years serving as police chief from 1963 until 1967. He served as a special deputy sheriff for Rockingham County.

He was a member of the Rockingham County Law Enforcement Association; the Kingston Vets Club; the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post No. 1088 in Kingston; and a former member of the N.H. State Marine Patrol.

He had a special interest in trains, a love of animals and wildlife and enjoyed working his farm in East Kingston, attending auctions and collecting antiques.

He is survived by three sisters, Winnifred Wentworth of Stratham, Doris Light of Exeter and Bertha Bruce of Stratham; one brother, Walter G. Carter Sr. of Kingston; his close friend and companion, Carol Tewksbury of Kingston; and many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in Kingston First Congregational Church, 6 Church St., Kingston. Military burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Kingston.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Kingston Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 302, Kingston, NH 03848.

John J. Donohoe

RYE - John J. "Jack" Donohoe, 74, died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, in Martin Memorial Medical Center, Stuart, Fla., after a sudden illness two days after arriving in Jensen Beach, Fla., where he and his wife palnned to spend the winter.

He was born in Woburn, Mass., the son of the late John J. and Eleanor (Scott) Donohoe. He resided in Woburn until moving to Rye in 1973.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving aboard the USS Toledo and the USS Astoria.

Mr. Donohoe was a real estate developer and business owner in Maine in New Hampshire. He was involved in the original development of Showcase Cinemas as well as the Northeast Trade Center near Route 128, and the development and restoration of historic mills throughout New England. He had previously been a self-employed plumber and builder.

He was a building inspector in Woburn until the late 1960s and had served as chairman of the Planning Board, Ward 4 alderman and was a longtime member of the Woburn Lions Club. He was part of the Woburn Golf and Ski Authority and was responsible for putting up a ski lift which was once located at Horn Pond Mountain.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Patricia Donohoe; five sons and three daughters-in-law, Michael and Donna Donohoe of Georgetown, Mass., Mark Donohoe of Rockport, Mass., Jay and Beth Donohoe of York, Maine, Barry and Linda Donohoe of North Hampton and Shawn Donohoe of Thompson, Conn.; two daughters, Maureen Gallagher and her husband Daniel of Lexington, Mass., and Marcia Donohoe of Jensen Beach, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Ronald Donohoe of Woburn, Gerald Donohoe of Ipswich, Mass., and James Donohoe of Homosassa Fla.,; three sisters, Eleanor Bussiere of Hampstead, Janet McLean of Woburn, and Patricia Durkin of Northwood; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by an infant son, Kevin; one brother, Paul Donohoe; and three sisters, Miriam Donohue, Carol Lumbert and Ann Callahan.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday in St. Charles Church, Woburn. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Woburn.

Memorial donations may be made to Merrimack Valley Hospice, 360 Merrimack St., Lawrence, MA 01843.

Arrangements were by the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, Woburn.

Agapit H. Jean Sr.

EPPING - Agapit H. Jean Sr., 84, of Acre Street, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, in Exeter Hospital.

He was born Aug. 17, 1918, in Epping one of 14 children of the late Alfred B. and Josephine (Lavoie) Jean.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Jean was employed by Rockingham Shoe Co., Newmarket, for many years.

He was a life-long communicant of St. Joseph Church, serving as an usher for many years. Like his father and brothers he worked as the caretaker of the cemetery where he dedicated the flag pole in memory of all who served to protect our freedom.

He was a member and past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 6850 and a charter member of the Bishop Leo E. O'Neil Assembly of the 4th degree.

The widower of Doris L. (Beaulieu) Jean, his wife of 52 years who died in 1998, he is survived by seven daughters, Yvonne Poliquin of Epping, Elizabeth McCusker of Plaistow, Yvette Jean of Gig Harbor, Wash., Marlene Myers of Dover, Darlene Bothwell-Smith of LaCrosse, Va., Donna MacDonald of Dover and Theresa Devine of Raymond; four sons, The Rev. Agapit H. Jean Jr. of Portsmouth, and Michael Jean, Robert Jean and Edward Jean, all of Epping; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jerome Jean of Epping and Thomas Jean of Rochester; four sisters, Clara Morrisette of Exeter, Mary Faucher of Raymond, Cecile Raiche of Epping and Gemma Jean-King of Epping; one stepsister, Lucille Lavoie of Manchester; one stepbrother, Lucien Lavoie of Nottingham; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one son, Cap. John Jean; one daughter, Elaine Conery; two granddaughters, Casandra Bragg and Dana Bothwell; five brothers, John, Antonio, Joseph, Albert and Alphonse Jean; and two sisters, Lucy Dionne and Antoinette Pare.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday in St. Joseph Church, Epping, with the Rev. Aggie Jean as celebrant. Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery, Epping.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph Church, P.O. Box 337, Epping, NH 03042 or to a local Disabled American Veterans organization.

Arrangements were by the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter.

James T. Morgan

EXETER - James T. Morgan, 95, of 127 Sherwood Forest, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, at Seacoast Health Center, Hampton.

He was born Aug. 1, 1907, in Cambridge, Mass., the son of the late Patrick and Anna Morgan, moving to Exeter in the mid 1980s.

Mr. Morgan was a warehouseman for the former First National Food Stores Distribution Center in Cambridge for 30 years and for the Fly Club at Harvard University for 10 years. After moving to Exeter, he worked setting up tables and chairs for the various functions at the Exeter Senior Citizen's Center until he was 92.

He was a communicant of St. Michael Church, Exeter, and was a member of the Teamsters Union.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Honorette (Gubernat) "Honey" Morgan of Exeter; one son and his wife, James P. and Mary Morgan of Seabrook; and one sister-in-law, Elizabeth Morgan of Cambridge.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 9:30 to11:30 a.m. in the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at noon in St. Michael Church, Front Street, Exeter. Burial will be in Exeter Cemetery.

Ronald L. Poliquin

EPPING - Ronald L. Poliquin, 54, died Friday Jan. 31, 2003, at his home.

He was born Dec. 8, 1948, in Exeter, the son of Albert Poliquin of Maine and the late Mary Rose (Grimard) Poliquin and was a longtime resident of Epping.

Mr. Poliquin worked in the construction business for many years and was employed at Shop 'n Save in Raymond for five years.

He enjoyed woodworking.

In addition to his father, he is survived by his life partner, Mary Jane Marble of Rochester; two daughters, Christina Kingsbury of Goffstown and Cherie Poliquin of San Bernadino, Calif.; one sister, Sharon Kenney of Exeter; two brothers, Rusty Poliquin of Epping and Kevin Poliquin of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 8 Pleasant St. Epping. Memorial services will follow at 2 p.m. in the funeral home.

Thelma E. Szydlo

HAMPTON - Thelma E. Szydlo, 89, of 6 Carlson Road, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, in Exeter Hospital.

She was born Jan. 15, 1914, in Winooski, Vt., the daughter of the late George and Dora (Dague) Metivier. She moved to Portsmouth in 1942 and had resided in Hampton since 1956.

She was a graduate of Winooski High School.

Mrs. Szydlo worked in the Winnacunnet High School Cafeteria in the early 1960s.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed playing bridge and belonged to a traveling bridge club in the Portsmouth area. She enjoyed traveling to Spain, the Canary Islands and Bermuda.

She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Stanley Szydlo; four sons, Stanley T. Szydlo of Peterborough, William R. Szydlo of Portsmouth, Stephen Szydlo of Hampton Falls and David Szydlo of Greenland; one daughter, Phyllis Grigas of Exeter, nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Madaline Miller of Burlington, Vt.; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. Burial will be in High Street Cemetery, Hampton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Parish, 289 Lafayette Road, Hampton, NH 03842.

William H. Barkley

HAMPTON - William H. Barkley, 90, died Friday, March 21, 2003, at his home.

He was born April 18, 1912, in Boston, the son of the late William B. and Helen S. (Chamberlin) Barkley. He had resided in Schenectady, N.Y., moving to Hampton in 1974, where he had been a summer visitor since 1916.

He was a 1933 graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II serving as a lieutenant. He was an engineer officer in the construction of Navy combat ships and the instruction of new officers for engineering duty at sea.

Mr. Barkley was an engineer licensed in Massachusetts, Maryland and New Hampshire and supervised the design construction and operation of major facilities for United Shoe Machinery Corp., Lever Brothers Co. and the General Electric Co. in Schenectady, where he served as project manager from 1950 until 1974.

Following his retirement in 1974 he managed his own consulting engineering office, Barkley Engineers in Hampton.

He was a member of St. Andrews-By-The-Sea, Rye Beach; served on numerous town committees including the Mill Restoration Study, and the Library Expansion Program; served several terms on the Conservation Commission and offered consultation with the school department.

While living in Schenectady he was a member of the Union Presbyterian Church and was a member of the General Electric Elfun Society.

He enjoyed traveling and gardening.

The widower of Ruth B. (Hanna) Barkley, his wife of 66 years who died this year, he is survived by twin daughters, Anne C. Barkley of Schenectady and Rachel B. Dennison of Novato, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, May 17, at 11 a.m. in St. Andrews-By-The-Sea, Church Road, Rye Beach for Mr. and Mrs. Barkley.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Lane Memorial Library, Academy Ave., Hampton, NH 03842.

Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Anna D. Benware

AMESBURY, Mass. - Anna Doreen Benware, 81, of 22 Maple St., died Wednesday, March 26, 2003, in Anna Jaques Hospital, Newburyport, Mass.

She was born June 1, 1921, in Newburyport, the daughter of the late John and M. Caroline (Griffin) Francois. She moved to Hampton in 1988, returning to Newburyport in 1997.

She was a graduate of Newburyport High School.

Mrs. Benware was a communicant of Immaculate Conception Church and a member of the Daughters of Isabella in Newburyport, Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church and the Catholic Women’s Club in Hampton; and a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Newburyport.

The widow of Arthur I. Benware, her husband of 43 years who died in 1996, she is survived by one son, Robert J. Benware of Salisbury, Mass.; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Leroy and Franky Boardman of Spring Hill, Fla.; and two nephews.

There are no calling hours.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the South Hampton Baptist Church, 10 Jewell St., South Hampton, NH 03827.
