Andrew D. Stevens

STRATHAM - Pfc. Andrew D. Stevens, 20, of Coach Road, was one of 11 soldiers killed in a helicopter crash, Tuesday, March 11, 2003, during a military training mission at Fort Drum, N.Y.

He was born June 12, 1982, in Peoria, Ill., the son of John D. and Lorna (Smith) Stevens of Stratham.

He was a 2001 graduate of Exeter High School and entered the U.S. Army shortly after his graduation. He was member of the 10th Mountain Division stationed at Fort Drum and had earned his expert infantry badge.

He was a dedicated soldier for whom an Army career was a childhood dream.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by one sister, Senior Airman Rachel Metz of Misawa Air Force Base, Japan; one brother, 1st Lt. John D. Stevens of Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota; his maternal grandparents, Harry and Helen Smith of Nashua; his paternal grandmother, Margaret Stevens of Weymouth, Mass.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 1 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in Stratham Community Church, Emery’s Lane, Stratham. Military burial will follow in Maple Lane Cemetery, Stratham.

Ernest P. Barka

DERRY - Ernest P. Barka, 80, of South Ave., died Monday, March 10, 2003, at his home.

He was born July 19, 1922, in Lawrence, Mass., the son of the late Deeb and Nizme Barka and was a lifelong resident of Derry.

He was a 1941 graduate of Pinkerton Academy, Derry, where he was a nine-letter athlete. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Barka was active in family businesses with his brother Kalil running Barka Oil Co. and Barka Grocery.

He served on the Rockingham County Board of Commissioners for more than 28 years. He was a founder of the Rockingham County Nutrition and the Meals on Wheels programs, and has been the chairman of the Board of Directors since 1997.

The Board of County Commissioners honored his continuing life of public service by naming the assisted living facility in his honor in 2002. This tribute is an acknowledgment of his commitment to the county’s mission of "Caring for Generations."

He was recognized by the N.H. Association of Counties as the County Commissioner of the Year in 1999 and had received the Vaughn Award from Governor Jeanne Shaheen. He also served for many years as a member of the N.H. House of Representatives for Derry. He served for 29 years on the Derry School Board and was recognized for that by having the West Running Brook School Gymnasium dedicated in his name.

He was a member of the American Legion Lester Chase Post No. 9 in Derry and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1617 in Derry, serving as commander in 1954-1955.

He is survived by one son and his wife, Greg E. and Mary Ellen Barka of Derry; one stepson, Robert Barka of Derry; one stepdaughter, Jane Kirkpatrick of Nashua; two grandchildren; one brother, David Barka of Derry; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Peabody Funeral Home and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 26 Crystal Ave., Derry. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery, East Derry.

Ruth H. Barkley

HAMPTON - Ruth Hanna Barkley, 88, died Sunday, March 9, 2003, at her home.

She was born Nov. 26, 1914, in Worcester, Mass., the daughter of the late Archibald and Rachel (Knight) Hanna. She resided in Schenectady, N.Y., from 1950 until 1974 before moving to Hampton.

She was a 1936 graduate of Simmons College, Boston.

During World War II she served with the American Friends Service Committee expediting food and medical supplies to Europe.

Mrs. Barkley had been employed by Atlantic Monthly Magazine.

She was a communicant of St. Andrews By-The-Sea in Rye and was a member of the Embroiderers Guild of America. She was a former member of the Union Presbyterian Church, Schenectady; the American Association of University Women; and the Friends of the Library in Schenectady.

She enjoyed gardening.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, William H. Barkley; twin daughters, Anne C. Barkley of Schenectady and Rachel B. Dennison of Novato, Calif.; two brothers, Archibald Hanna Jr. of Branford, Conn., and Robert Hanna of Leominster, Mass.; one sister, Priscilla Hanks of Wellesley, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one brother, Jay Hanna, who died in 1993.

Memorial services will be held at St. Andrews By-the-Sea, Rye Beach, at a time to be announced.

Memorial donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Dorothy Connors

MANCHESTER - Dorothy (Thompson) Connors, 86, died Sunday, March 9, 2003, in Elliot Hospital.

She was born May 16, 1916, in Manchester, the daughter of William J. and Helen C. (Martin) Thompson.

She was a graduate of West High School, Manchester.

Mrs. Connors was employed by Jordan Marsh until her retirement.

She was a communicant of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Manchester; a member of the N.H. Rose Society and the Merrimack Garden Club.

The widow of James J. Connors, she is survived by five sons, Gerald Connors of Peoria, Ariz., Neil Connors, Thomas Connors and Timothy Connors, all of Manchester, and John Connors of Camarillo, Calif.; two daughters, Carol Jones of Burbank, Calif., and Mary Kishbaugh of Hampton; 20 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one brother, Frank Thompson of Keene; one sister, Catherine Sundius of Lexington, S.C.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours will be held Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the McHugh Funeral Home, 483 Beech St., Manchester.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 9:15 a.m. in the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bedford.

Richard A. Green

EXETER - Richard A. Green, 40, died Monday, March 10, 2003, in Anna Jaques Hospital, Newburyport, Mass., after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born June 29, 1962, in Cambridge, Mass., the son of Richard and Judith (Ladetto) Green of Somerville, Mass. He had resided in Hampton for several years before moving to Exeter.

He was a graduate of Cambridge High School and Daniel Webster College, Portsmouth, with a degree in business.

He was a U.S. Army veteran serving with the 82nd Airborne Division.

Mr. Green was a senior construction manager for Kinoo Consulting Co., at the Big Dig in Boston.

He was an avid body builder and worked out every day.

In addition to his parents he is survived by his wife, Stephanie (Dimock) Green of Exeter; one daughter, Caitlyn E. Green of Exeter; one brother, Harold Green of Cambridge; and one sister, Judith Braga of Cambridge.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Theresa Church, 815 Central Road, Rye Beach.

Arlyda B. Holderman

STRAFFORD - Arlyda Brown "Lee" Holderman, 66, died Sunday, March 9, 2003, at her home, after a brief bout with cancer.

She was born July 13, 1936, the daughter of Mabine Collins Thomas and Earl Fairchild Brown of Utica, N.Y. She was raised in Syracuse, N.Y., and resided on Mill Road in North Hampton before moving to Strafford.

Mrs. Holderman drove a school bus in various communities throughout the New Hampshire and Maine Seacoast area.

She was a former member of the Winnacunnet High School Band Boosters Club.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Vernon "Jake" Holderman; three daughters, Marlene Boutin of Candia, Connie Wentworth of Chesapeake, Va., and Lynn Dow of Nottingham; two sons, Douglas Holderman of Chesapeake, Va., and Jay Holderman of Lusby, Md.; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Thursday in the Purdy Memorial Chapel, Lee, with Pastor Steven Bartell of the Faith Lutheran Church, officiating. Spring burial will be in Southside Cemetery, Nottingham.

Edward C. Marchione

SEABROOK - Edward C. Marchione, 49, of 19 Raymond Drive, died Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at his home.

He was born Sept. 20, 1953, in Boston, the son of the late Carlos and Patricia (Lakis) Marchione. He was raised in Rochester and attended a private, all boys school and used his educational opportunities throughout his daily life.

Mr. Marchione was a graphic artist working from his home.

He was an avid reader and wrote exceptional poetry. He enjoyed cooking and fishing and held the world’s record for the largest haddock caught, weighing some 181 pounds. He was the recipient of numerous fishing awards and trophies.

He will be remembered for his work with AIDS education. He worked in Connecticut to initiate needle exchange programs.

He is survived by his wife of 14 years, Christine A. (DeCelles) Marchione of Seabrook; her children, Jason S. Frothingham of Seabrook and Nichole C. Penney of Medford, Mass.; and one step granddaughter.

He was predeceased by one brother, Louis Marchione Sr., who died in 1990; and one nephew, Louis Marchione Jr., who died in 1996.

Calling hours will be held Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Robert K. Gray Jr. Funeral Home, 24 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton.

In keeping with his wishes, his ashes will be scattered off Plum Island in the summer.

Joan D. Sarson

HAMPTON - Joan D. Sarson, 67, of 340 Lafayette Road, died Tuesday, March 11, 2003, in Exeter Hospital after a courageous battle with lung disease.

She was born Oct. 23, 1935, in Lawrence, Mass., the daughter of the late Armand L. and Georgiana (Provost) Jerome. She traveled as a military wife and lived in England, France and Germany before moving to North Hampton in 1965. She had resided in Hampton since 1974.

She was a 1953 graduate of Lawrence High School.

Mrs. Sarson was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church.

She enjoyed spending time with her family and playing Bingo.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 50 years, Dennis J. Sarson; four sons, Frederick J. and his wife Linda Sarson of East Rochester, Patrick and his wife Carole Sarson of Sanford, Maine, Steven and his wife Lisa Sarson of York, Maine, and David Sarson and his partner Fred of Portsmouth; three daughters, Donna M. Sarson-Malcolm and her husband Scott Malcolm of Hampton, Lynn and her husband Mark Pittendreigh of Exeter and Mari-Kate Sarson and her fiancée Jamie of Rochester; 18 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Gilbert Jerome of Methuen, Mass.; two sisters, Loretta Garneau of Methuen, and Catherine Woveris of Hampton; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Raymond Jerome, Arthur Jerome and Roland Jerome; and two sisters, Rita Sarson and Irene Jerome.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. After cremation burial will be in High Street Cemetery, Hampton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association, 9 Cedarwood Drive, Unit 12, Bedford, NH 03110.

Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton.
