David S. Freitas

HAMPTON - David S. Freitas, 65, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, in Exeter Hospital.

He was born Sept. 9, 1937, in Rockville Center, N.Y., the son of Fred and Elizabeth (Blake) Freitas. He had resided in Manchester before coming to Hampton.

He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Freitas was employed with the New England Teamsters Local No. 633 before his retirement.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Catherine (Kay) Freitas of Hampton; one daughter, Alice Kipperman of Exeter; one step- grandchild; three brothers, Frank Freitas and Robert Freitas, both of Manchester, and Jeffery Freitas of Raymond; one sister, Maureen West of Manchester; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by one son, David S. Freitas Jr., who died in 1999.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday in St. Pius X Church, Manchester.

Memorial donations may be made to the Exeter Hospital Memorial Fund, 10 Buzzell Ave., Exeter, NH 03833.

Arrangements were by the Cain & Janosz Funeral Home, Manchester.

William J. LeBlanc Jr.

BRENTWOOD - Memorial services for William J. "Billy" LeBlanc Jr. will be held Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 11 a.m. in the First Baptist Church, Route 125 and North Road, Brentwood.

Mr. LeBlanc died Feb. 18, 2002.

William A. McCarthy Jr.

SOUTH HAMPTON - William A. McCarthy Jr., 67, died January 29, 2003, at his home.

He was born in Revere, Mass., and was raised in Lynn, Mass.

He attended Gordon College and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Mr. McCarthy was an Eagle Scout; a member of the Bethlehem Lodge AF & AM of Lynn, Mass.; the General William Whipple Military Lodge of N.H.; the Valley of Portsmouth and Dover Scottish Rite; the Bektash Temple of Concord; and the North American Order of the Beaver.

He was an avid woodsman and was active in many primitive rendezvous throughout New England.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Carole McCarthy of South Hampton; two sons and their wives, James and Melodye McCarthy of Rye, and Michael and Cindy McCarthy of Tucson, Ariz.; two daughters, Bonnie McCarthy of Pittsfield, Maine, and Heather McKay and her husband Michael of Epping; 16 grandchildren; two sisters, Karen Collette of Fairhaven, Vt., and Pat Walter of Albuquerque, N.M.; one brother, Timothy McCarthy of San Pedro, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children, Bektash Shriners, P.O. Box 4086, Concord, NH 03302-40-86.

Arrangements were by the Cremation Society of New Hampshire, Manchester.

Vincent A. Moore

EXETER - Vincent A. Moore, 54, of Wentworth St., died Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, at his home after a sudden illness.

He was born May 17, 1948, in Portland, Maine, the son of the late Elwyn and Katherine (Ewald) Moore. He had resided in Cumberland, Maine, and Provincetown, Mass., moving to Exeter in October.

He was a 1966 graduate of Greely High School, Cumberland, and received his bachelor of business degree at the University of Southern Maine.

He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Vietnam War.

Mr. Moore was a manager at Olympia Sports, most recently in Seabrook.

He was a member of the Veterans for Peace and sang with the men’s choral group in Provincetown and Portsmouth.

He enjoyed gourmet cooking and gardening.

He is survived by one daughter, Sheilalee Moore of Biddeford, Maine; one brother, Theodore Moore of Auburn, Maine; and his partner of 11 years, Paul Colcord of Exeter.

Memorial services will be held Feb. 22 at 11 a.m. in Trinity Episcopal Church, 403 Main St., Saco, Maine. Spring burial will be in the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta, Maine.

Memorial donations may be made to the Vietnam Veterans of America, c/o Joe Sternburg C.F.O., 8605 Cameron St., Silver Springs, MD 20910.

Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter.

Ralph E. Secola

MANCHESTER - Ralph E. Secola, 38, of Cedar Street, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, in Manchester after a sudden illness.

He was born Aug. 11, 1964, in Boston, the son of William F. Secola of Epping and the late Gertrude L. (Dunbar) Secola. He was raised in East Boston and resided in Waltham, Mass., for several years, moving to Manchester in 1999.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran.

Mr. Secola was employed by A1 Taxi Service in Waltham.

In addition to his father, he is survived by two brothers, William Secola of Danville and Timothy Secola of Harwich, Mass.; and two nieces.

Calling hours will be held Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 8 Pleasant St., Epping.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 6 p.m. in the funeral home.

Joseph E. Sobozenski

EXETER - Joseph E. Sobozenski, 88, of Front Street, died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, in Exeter Hospital after a sudden illness.

He was born May 21, 1914, in Newmarket, the son of the late Felix and Eva Sobozenski.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Sobozenski was a communicant of St. Michael Church, Exeter, and was a lifelong member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars; a member of the American Citizens Club of Polish Descent, Newmarket; and the American Legion Post 32 of Exeter.

He is survived by his wife, Alma (Poliquin) Sobozenski; five sons, Paul Sobozenski of Newmarket, George Bascom and David Bascom, both of Epping, Richard Bascom of Berwick, Maine, and Stephen Bascom of Auburn; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Celia Illingsworth and Katherine Pelczar, both of Newmarket; one brother, George Sobozenski of Newmarket; and many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday at 1 p.m. in St. Michael Church, Front Street, Exeter, with the Rev. Agapit Jean officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Michael Church, Front St., Exeter, NH 03833.

Abel J. Alves Jr.

RYE - Abel J. Alves Jr., 82, of Ocean Boulevard, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at his home.

He was born Jan. 7, 1921, in Lowell, Mass., the son of the late Abel and Julia (Freitas) Alves. He was raised in Lowell and resided in Billerica, Mass., for 18 years and in Rye for 34 years.

He was a graduate of Lowell High School where he participated in the high school band as a soloist and first trumpeter, and was a graduate of Lowell Commercial College.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Alves was a civil service employee retiring in 1974 after serving for 30 years as a military comptroller. During the last five years of his employment he was the hospital administrator at Fort Devens, Mass.

As a child, he accompanied his father singing and playing the mandolin on a local radio show called the Portuguese Hour. Over the years, his musical talents brought much joy to many people. In the 1940s and ’50s, he was conductor and director of the Portuguese Colonial Band, and later was the band leader of the Bel Alves Dance Band through the 1960s, playing in the greater Lowell-Lawrence area.

He was a communicant of St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach, and was a member of the church choir. He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Chelmsford, Mass., for 38 years. After his retirement, he volunteered his time at Northeast Credit Union mentoring younger colleagues.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ida T. (Coelho) Alves of Rye; one son and his wife, David and Linda Alves of Concord, Mass., and Alton Bay; and one granddaughter.

He was predeceased by one son, Richard Alves.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday in St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach. Burial was in Central Cemetery, Rye.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701 or to the American Parkinson Disease Assoc., 61 Dublin Ave., Nashua, NH 03063-2045.

Edward Camire Sr.

NEWMARKET - Edward Camire Sr., 83, of Maplecrest, died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at his home after a period of failing health.

He was born Oct. 5, 1919, in Exeter, the son of Leon and Josephine (McMullen) Camire and was a lifelong resident of Newmarket.

He was a graduate of St. Mary’s School and a 1927 graduate of Newmarket High School.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving as a first lieutenant in the Signal Corps. He served in the Army Reserves and was recalled in 1953 to serve in the Korean Conflict. At the end of World War II, he never received his medals and in August, Senator Bob Smith awarded him his long-deserved medals at his home. Mr. Camire and his medals were the subject of a Channel 11 Outlook Program on Veterans Day.

He owned and operated Mobile Electronics, where he did two-way radio repair. He worked for various town and emergency departments on their radio systems and also serviced all the non-tactical radio equipment at Pease Air Force Base. He was one of the first engineers to be hired by WHEB in the late 1930s and he continued to work there after World War II. He then worked at Electronic Devices in Portsmouth until 1965.

Mr. Camire was a communicant of St. Mary Church, Newmarket. He was an avid ham radio operator, using the call letters W1JUI. He was a member of the Amateur Radio Relay League, the Old Timers Club, the Robert G. Durgin American Legion Post No. 67 in Newmarket, and the U.S. Army Signal Corps Association. He volunteered for many years at the N.H. Association for the Blind.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nina (Frost) Camire of Newmarket; one son and his wife, Edward Jr. and Jennifer Camire of Dover; two daughters, Elaine Camire and Belinda Camire, both of Newmarket; two grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by four brothers, Fred, Albert and William Camire and William McMullen; and four sisters, Emma MacDonald, Diana Camire, Annie Keniston and Anita Wentworth.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday in St. Mary Church, Newmarket. Spring burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Newmarket.

Lorraine H. Currier

RYE - Lorraine H. Currier, 87, of 160 Perkins Road, died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, in Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

She was born Jan. 11, 1916, in Merrimack, the daughter of the late Josiah N. and Marguerite W. (Bushee) Henderson and had resided in Rye since 1943.

Mrs. Currier was the assistant librarian at Rye Public Library retiring in 1981 after 16 years of service.

She was an active member of Rye Congregational Church and enjoyed the Bible Study Group. She was a member of the Rye Art Study Group and was a former member of the Rye Garden Club, the Rye Historical Society and the Rye Over 55 Club.

She is survived by her husband Norman L. Currier of Rye; three daughters, Lorraine C. Craig of Tipp City, Ohio, Sandra C. Schools of Granby, Conn., and Cynthia C. Ramsay of Manahawkin, N.J.; nine grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Rarer of Rye; one stepson, Richard Currier of Shapleigh, Maine; one stepdaughter, Karen Lees of Fairfax, Va.; five step grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Norman K. Cameron, who died in 1982; and one brother, Lawrence Henderson.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in Rye Congregational Church, Rye Center. Burial will be in Central Cemetery, Rye.
