Ethel G. Dixon

DERRY - Ethel G. (McGrath) Dixon, 80, died July 8, 2003, at her home.

She was born in Methuen, Mass., and had resided in Lynchburg, Va.

She was a 1941 graduate of Edward F. Searles High School in Methuen.

Mrs. Dixon was employed by the Internal Revenue Service in Andover, Mass.

She attended St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church before moving to Lynchburg where she helped orchestrate the building of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Lt. Col. Herbert S. Dixon (U.S.A.F. ret.); one son and his wife, Thomas H. and Carolyn Dixon of Denver, N.C.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Christine Dixon of Exeter, Dorothy and Thomas Bley of Lincolnton, N.C. and Barbara E. and Capt. John E. Cohoon Jr. of St. Mary’s, Ga.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held July 11 in St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Methuen. Burial followed in Elmwood Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 90 Broadway, Methuen, MA 01844.

Arrangements were by the Pollard Funeral Home, Methuen.

James B. Eddy

EPPING - James Benjamin Eddy, 52, of St. Laurent Street, died Sunday, July 20, 2003, at his home after a brief illness

He was born Jan. 6, 1951, in Everett, Mass., the son of the late Harold M. and Ella M. (Griggs) Eddy. He was raised in Kingston and had resided in Epping since 1986.

He was a 1969 graduate of Sanborn High School, Kingston.

Mr. Eddy sold auto parts wholesale and retail for Car Parts of Epping for the past seven years. He was formerly the manager of Nappa Auto Parts in Derry for eight years and of Plaistow Tire Store for seven years. He was a mechanic at Stratham Tire Store in Derry for 11 years.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Rose (Young) Eddy of Epping; one son and his wife, Douglas and Jacqueline Eddy of Manchester; two brothers, Harold M. Eddy of Davenport, Fla., and Stephen W. Eddy of Raymond; and one niece and nephew.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday and Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 8 Pleasant St., Epping.

Funeral services will be held Friday, at 11 a.m. in Epping Bible Baptist Church, Route 27, Epping, with the Rev. Ron Townsend officiating. Burial will be in Brentwood Cemetery.

Alfred J. Fleischmann

HAMPTON - Alfred John Fleischmann, 79, died Thursday, July 17, 2003, in Lawrence General Hospital, Lawrence, Mass., after a brief illness.

He was born in Lawrence and was a graduate of Lawrence High School and attended Northeastern University on a scholarship. He received his degree in chemical engineering in 1944 and was a Dean’s List student. He studied for his master’s degree at Johns Hopkins University.

Mr. Fleischmann was a project manager in the General Electric Small Aircraft Division at the River Works plant in Lynn, Mass. As a design engineer he was involved in Coast Guard Sea and Air Rescue missions. He received a Manager’s Award for the three years as a liaison with General Electric and the service helicopters of the Presidential Fleet in Washington, D.C., during the presidency of John F. Kennedy.

He was a longtime mem ber of the Knights of Columbus and served as treasurer with the North Andover, Mass., Council for 30 years. He was a member of SEDMA and the Elfun Club of the G.E. Old Timers. He was formerly a Boy Scout neighborhood commissioner.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Louise (Greene) Fleischmann; two sons, John Fleischmann and his wife Shirley of Longwood, Fla., and William Fleischmann of Andover, Mass.; two daughters, Karen Reilly and her husband Carl of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Nancy Szymanowski of Wake Forest, N.C.; five grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Winifred Casey of Lawrence; and several cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday in St. Michael Church, North Andover. Burial was in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Lawrence.

Arrangements were by the John Breen Memorial Funeral Home, Lawrence.

Elizabeth A. Harmon

NOTTINGHAM - Elizabeth A. (Mulhall) Harmon, 58, of Mitchell Road, died Friday, July, 18, 2003, at her home after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born July 24, 1944, in Peabody, Mass., the daughter of the late Donald F. and Margaret M. (LeBlanc) Mulhall and had resided in Nottingham since 1970.

Cooking was Mrs. Harmon’s passion, both professionally and personally.

She is survived by her husband, Alfred Harmon of Nottingham; three daughters and their husbands, Dawn and Randy Stone of Keizer, Ore., Penny and Bruce Horne of Lee, and Ginny and Earl Adams of Milton; eight grandchildren; and one brother, Donald Mulhall of Colorado Springs, Colo.

She was predeceased by one sister, Jean Burke.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. in New North Side Cemetery, Nottingham.

Arrangements are by the Kent and Pelczar Funeral Home, Newmarket.

John M. Mayo Jr.

RAYMOND - John M. "Jak" Mayo Jr., 69, of Old Fremont Road, died Monday, July 21, 2003, at his home after a lengthy illness.

He was born Jan. 25, 1934, in Cambridge, Mass., the son of the late John M. and Evelyn (White) Mayo Sr. He was raised in Wellesley, Mass., and had resided in Raymond for 16 years.

He was a graduate of Wellesley High School and was a graduate of Wentworth Institute.

He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran of the Korean conflict.

Mr. Mayo was employed by AT&T on the long lines retiring after 35 years of service.

He was a member of the Ray-Fre Senior Center and the Senior League at Lakeside Lanes in Auburn. He enjoyed gardening and candlepin bowling.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, M. Joyce (Baxter) Mayo of Raymond; three sons, James M. Mayo of Middleton, Conn., John M. Mayo of Ayer, Mass., and Joseph M. Mayo of Newmarket; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

There are no calling hours or services planned.

Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Raymond.

James T. Shelton

PORTSMOUTH - James T. Shelton, 76, died Friday, July 18, 2003, in Portsmouth Regional Hospital, following a brief illness.

He was born July 31, 1926, in Louisville, Ken., the son of the late Charles K. and Clara Bell (Keeton) Shelton. His mother died when he was 4 and he was raised by his stepmother, Mary C. (Bargiel) Shelton. He had resided in Newmarket and Rye.

He was a 1944 graduate of Newmarket High School and was a U.S. Army veteran serving with the medical corps from 1946 until 1947.

Mr. Shelton worked in the family automobile business, Shelton Motors. His father had the Hudson and Willys dealership and later American Motors, with businesses in Newmarket, Newington and Portsmouth. He later worked for the Bournival Agency in Portsmouth, as a Realtor with Peg & Dick Shaw and with Shanley Realty.

He was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing bridge and cribbage.

He was a member of the Portsmouth Country Club; the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Portsmouth; the Rye Lions Club; the Rockingham Country Club, Newmarket; and the Polish American Club of Newmarket.

He is survived by three sons, Scott J. Shelton and his wife Gail of Apopka, Fla., Mark Shelton of Portsmouth and Stuart Shelton of Naples, Fla.; one daughter, Kimberly Shelton of Winter Park, Fla.; two grandchildren; one stepson and his wife, Jeffery and Shannon Chase of Oregon City, Ore.; three step-grandchildren; five sisters, Louise Smith of Louisville, Ken., Mary Cornelius of Henderson, Ken., Patricia Shelton of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Elizabeth Weinblatt of Juno Beach, Fla.; and Genevieve Trudelle of Leesburg, Fla.; three brothers, Franklin Shelton of North Palm Beach, Fla., and York Beach, Maine, Richard Shelton of Newmarket and Robert Shelton of Dover; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one sister, Katherine Shelton.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Mary Church, Newmarket, with the Rev. John Finnigan as celebrant. Burial follow in Calvary Cemetery, Newmarket.

Marian A. Ridlehoover

METHUEN, Mass. - Marian A. (Dore) Haskell Ridlehoover, 96, died Sunday, July 13, 2003, at the Halcyon House, Methuen.

She was born May 27, 1907, in West Newbury, Mass., the daughter of the late Leslie and Lois (Wallace) Dore. A resident of Methuen for the last few years, she had previously lived in Merrimac, Mass., Exeter and Hollywood, Florida, For many years, she traveled to Alaska to spend the summers with her daughter and grandchildren.

She was a graduate of the former Merrimac High School and received her nursing degree from Hale Hospital School of Nursing.

Mrs. Ridlehoover had been director of nursing at various nursing homes in the area.

She is survived by one daughter and her husband, Natalie and Christopher Brooks of Chugiak, Alaska; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Kenneth E. Haskell; her second husband, Oscar Ridlehoover; and one brother, Leslie Dore, Jr.

Memorial services will be held Sunday, July 27, at 2:00 p.m. in Merrimacport United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Locust Grove Cemetery, Merrimac.

Memorial donations may be made to the Merrimacport United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 214, Merrimac, MA 01860.

Arrangements are by the Paul C. Rogers & Sons Funeral Home, Merrimac.

Helen H. Pitman

EXETER - Helen H. Pitman, 91, of Hayes Park, died Friday, July 18, 2003, at Seacoast Health Center, Hampton, after a period of failing health.

She was born Jan. 5, 1912, in Gardner, Mass. the daughter of John and Alli (Oja) Wirkkala.

Mrs. Pitman was a registered nurse at Exeter Hospital for more than 62 years.

She was a member of the Exeter PTA ; the Business and Professional Women’s Club; and the Exeter Players.

The widow of Charles H. Pitman, who died in 1962, she is survived by two sons, Mark J. Pitman of Bowdoin, Maine, and Gordon H. Pitman of California; and three grandsons.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Red Cross.

Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter.

Jean A. Wagner

HAMPTON FALLS - Jean Avery Wagner, 89, died Saturday, July 19, 2003, at her home.

She was born Dec. 24, 1913, in Aurora, N.Y., the daughter of the late William and Imogen Avery.

She was a graduate of Wells College, Aurora.

Mrs. Wagner was owner and president of Applecrest Farm Orchards.

She was the commissioner of Girls Scouts in Natick, Mass.; a member of the Junior League of Boston; a founding member and past-president of Child and Family Services, Exeter; a founding member and past president of the Exeter Hospital Associates; former trustee of the University of New Hampshire; a member of the Winnacunnet High School Scholarship Fund Board; and was an active member in various apple organizations.

The widow of William L. Wagner, her husband of 45 years, she is survived by one daughter, Ann Linden Carlisle of Cape Elizabeth, Maine; two sons, Benjamin A. Wagner of Exeter and Peter B. Wagner of Hampton Falls; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Baldwin C. Avery of Pocono Lake Preserves, Pa.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by three brothers, William, David and Benjamin Avery.

A celebration of her life will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Exeter Congregational Church, Front St., Exeter. Burial will be in Aurora at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Child and Family Services of Exeter, Exeter, NH 03833.

Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter.

Joseph M. Woods

EXETER - Joseph M. Woods, 51, of 149 Brentwood Road died Monday, July 14, 2003 in Exeter Hospital after a sudden illness.

He was born Feb. 2, 1952, in Rochester, the son of Joseph E. Woods of Exeter and the late Annie E. (Seekins) Woods and was a lifelong resident of Exeter.

He was a graduate of Exeter High School.

Mr. Woods was a foreman for the Gilford Railroad Transportation Co.

He enjoyed watching NASCAR racing and tinkering in his shed with his lawnmower, weed wacker and tools.

In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, Peggy A. (Gardner) Woods; one son and his wife, Michael J. and Rebecca S. Woods of Kensington; one daughter, Deborah K. Woods of North Andover, Mass.; six grandchildren; one sister, Patricia Trembley of New Hampshire, one stepson, Mark D. Gilman of Exeter; one stepdaughter, Kimberly Long of Epping; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Friday in St. Michael Church, Exeter. Burial was in Exeter Cemetery.

Arrangements were by the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter.
