H. Donald Spalding
After living with cancer bravely and well for several years, H. Donald "Don" Spalding died in his Rye, New Hampshire home on Sunday, July 9, 2006. He was 88 years old, born on December 6, 1917 in Nashua, the son of Louis (Lovejoy) and Ada (Nutbrown) Spalding. Don was predeceased by his beloved wife Dorothy (Johnson), his son Dean Harris Spalding, and his brother John "Jake" Spalding of Los Alamos, New Mexico. He is survived by his daughter Pat Spalding, also of Rye, and by many nieces and nephews.

A pattern maker by trade, Don graduated from the Wentworth Technical Institute of Boston and founded and operated the State Pattern Co. of Hudson, New Hampshire where he spent most of his working career. After selling that business he continued to work part-time from his various home workshops constructing patterns for the Nashua Foundry up until a few months before his death.

Don was a doer, a builder, and a tinkerer who approached projects with a sense of playful curiosity. An inventive man of various talents and interests, he built and renovated furniture and houses and enjoyed an active life of hiking, biking, canoeing, and skiing -- well into his eighties. He liked music, played the piano, and was a table-top drummer with a good sense of rhythm. Latching onto the disco craze of the 1970s, he and his wife Dot took disco dance lessons and spun each other across the kitchen dance floor. Following in that free-spirit tradition this past winter, before signing up with Hospice, he and his daughter Pat took ballroom dance lessons together and spent Sunday afternoons waltzing at the Rockingham Ballroom.

When he no longer had the energy to dance, Don found instructions for making Nantucket-style baskets at the library and constructed five beautiful baskets, each a different original shape and size. In the last month of his life he perused books of small-house plans with his daughter suggesting suitable designs for a cabin which she may build on a back lot he owned on Nubanusit Lake in Hancock, New Hampshire.

He was a politically liberal conservative, a man of some contradiction who figured out and stuck to his own principals. With wit, humor, and Yankee doggedness, Don remained a registered Republican for his whole life even though Dwight D. Eisenhower was the last Republican presidential candidate he could bring himself to vote for. A true New Hampshirite, he was uncomfortable with the state's motto "Live Free or Die" and much preferred the slogan "Live and Let Live" which was the guiding principle of his life. Don was never without a project or a blueprint for one. With an open-minded ability to reinvent himself, he was always mulling over the next plan. As Dot often used to say, "He never fails to surprise me." Throughout his life Don Spalding never failed to surprise and delight his many friends and loved ones.

An informal Open House Honoring Celebration of his life was held on Thursday, July 20, at Pat's home at 441 Brackett Road, Rye, NH 03870. A graveside Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 29, at 10:00 a.m. at the Hills Farm cemetery, Derry Road, Route 102, Hudson, followed by a Story-Sharing Reception in the function hall of the Community Church of Hudson, 19 Central Street, Hudson. All are welcome.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations may be made to Rockingham VNA & Hospice, 137 Epping Road, Exeter, NH 03833 or to the Rye Public Library, 581 Washington Road, Rye, NH 03870.
