Barry Clinton Rhodes
Died: Tuesday, July 05, 2005
Age: 49

PORTLAND - Barry Clinton Rhodes, 49, of Clinton Street, died peacefully Tuesday morning, July 5, at his residence following a four-year battle with cancer.

Born in Fall River, Mass., he is the son of William C. and Myrtle I. Wood Rhodes. He was a 1973 graduate of Diman Technical Vocational High School.

He moved to Portland, Maine from New Hampshire to take a position as an electrical engineer at Montalvo, a position he held for more than 14 years. During those years that he was at Montalvo, Rhodes was directly involved in the development of the SC Series of digital controllers which included the SC-1, SC-2, and S-3000 family. He also worked with the team in Denmark to help in the planning and development of the CB 63 and CB 64 controllers. Every load cell manufactured by Montalvo, including those produced in Denmark, had Rhodes' stamp. In addition, Rhodes is one of the inventors listed on the patent application of the new U-Series product about to be released.

Every customer, representative and colleague who had a difficult tension control application, knew they could count on Rhodes for a professional assessment of the situation and solution to the problem. He was not only known as an accomplished electrical engineer, but he had a solid grasp of mechanical engineering as well.

Outside of work, when he wasn't enjoying a hike through the White Mountains, Rhodes could be found straddling his bright red Ducati motorcycle, as he raced at break-neck speeds in and out of the passing lanes along the highways and byways of Southern Maine and New Hampshire. An avid outdoor enthusiast, he enjoyed rock climbing, skiing and competing in running/cycling biathlons.

A loving and adoring father to his daughter, Alison, Rhodes remained forever loyal and dedicated to his family and friends.

Rhodes' unique sense of humor made him a welcome addition to any social event where the accent was on having fun. He treated his quick wit to a liberal dose of dark humor to provide his friends with insight that was both intelligent and edgy, but always delightfully entertaining.

His uncanny ability to build a fully operational space shuttle out of discarded items from around the house earned him the nickname, MacGyver, because he relied on science and wit to solve almost any problem. Whether the occasion called for him to fashion a multi-level gas grill from a discarded toaster oven, or to cook a gourmet meal with the flame from a Zippo lighter, Rhodes was up for the challenge.

An aspiring gourmet chef with a discerning palate, he had an enviable knack for discovering emerging wines long before the general public made them popular. What began as four friends enjoying a simple summer weekend retreat became a mini food and wine tasting event affectionately known as the Annual Frye Island Weekend of Drunken Debauchery.

He is survived, and intensely missed, by his significant other of eight plus years, Kim Barry of Portland; his daughter, Alison Rhodes of Brookfield; his father, William Rhodes of Wolfeboro; as well as family and friends in New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. And last, but certainly not least, Mr. Scoots the cat.

In celebration of Rhodes' life, a roast will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, July 23, at the Conroy-Tully-Crawford, South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland, where family and friends will share their thoughts and memories. A catered gathering at his home on Clinton Street will directly follow the service; a special toast with his beloved Guinness will be hoisted in his honor.

Anyone with an amusing story to share is encouraged to help make Rhodes' recent statement a reality: "Damn, I fear I've left you all with WAY too much good "roast" material on me."

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the American Cancer Society in Rhodes' memory.

Elton "Red" Perkins
Died: Wednesday, June 29, 2005
Age: 86

SOUTH TAMWORTH - Elton A. Perkins, "Red," died peacefully at his home on Route 25 in South Tamworth, Wednesday evening, June 29, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born July 12, 1918 in Randolph, Maine, and was the son of Forest Perkins and Julia Boothby Perkins. He was the fifth child and had two sisters and five brothers.

Perkins' roots go deep in Tamworth. He spent his summers and school vacations with his grandmother Irene Boothby in Tamworth. His grandmother, her parents and their parents before them were born in Tamworth. They all were descended from Daniel Hayford (Perkins' fourth great-grandfather) who fought in the American Revolution. Daniel Hayford settled in Tamworth in the 1700s after the war ended. Another ancestor, Edward Hayford, was a selectman in Tamworth in 1793 and was an early pew holder in the old Meeting House.

Perkins' second great-grandfather served in the War of 1812. A great grandfather was a Union soldier during the Civil War. All these men lived and raised their families in Tamworth, as had Perkins, who moved to Tamworth in 1936 and initially went to work for the Pine Tree Poultry Farm, a large enterprise at that time, located on Page Hill Road.

In January 1941, Perkins joined the U.S. Army. He was with the 197th CAAA, Battery B, out of Dover. There were many New Hampshire men in that Battery and Perkins made life long friends with some. He was shipped overseas to Australia and arrived there in March of 1942, after an arduous three weeks at sea.

While in the Pacific Theater of the War, he was in Australia, New Guinea and Morotai, in the then Dutch East Indies. It was a hard and dangerous time full of privation and sacrifice, fighting in tropical jungles. But, he was always very proud of his time in the military during World War II. His military service shaped him to be the man he was.

After WWII, Perkins came back to Maine and then New Hampshire. He met and married his wife, Betty, in 1950. He got a job with the Woodland Division of Saunders Brothers and eventually returned to Tamworth, where he lived the rest of his life. He was a timber cruiser and held a surveyor's license and real estate broker's license. During that time, he surveyed and walked thousands of acres of land in New Hampshire, Maine and eastern Canada. It was a career he enjoyed immensely and was good at with his knowledge of forestry and an easy-going manner.

Conservation of forestland was always an interest of his and he was one of the charter members of the Tamworth Conservation Commission. He served 20 years in that position and had a major impact on the lands and easements acquired by the town of Tamworth, which to this day are key components to conservation in Tamworth. In recognition of his accomplishments he was given the Kim Ayers Award by the Lakes Region Planning Commission in 2005 and was the first person in Tamworth to ever receive that award.

In the 1960s, Perkins owned the South Tamworth Country Store. He was also part owner in Whittier Lumber Company, a wood products company located in Tamworth on old Rte. 25 during the 1970s. He retired in 1981 from Saunders Brothers and in that year, he and Betty took a six-month tour of Australia and New Zealand. It was a trip of a lifetime and Perkins got to see places he had been in WWII and they connected with relatives they had never met.

Perkins was a faithful churchgoer and was associated with St. Margaret's Anglican Church in Conway, and he served on the Vestry.

Gardening was another great interest of Perkins' and he was known for the wonderful garden he kept in the middle of South Tamworth for many years. You could often see him there weeding and hoeing. It was great fun for him to compete with other local growers and see who could grow the biggest and the fastest. He was known far and wide for his raspberry patch.

Perkins leaves his wife of 56 years, Betty Seavey Perkins, and his son, Alan A. Perkins, both of South Tamworth. He is predeceased by his daughter, Virginia, who died in 1960 at a tender age. He also leaves behind his brother, Milton Perkins, of Westbrook, Maine and several nieces and nephews.

There are no calling hours. A graveside service was scheduled for Tuesday, July 5 at North Conway Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Southern Carroll County, or the Tamworth Community Nurses Association, or the South Tamworth Methodist Church or the Union Hall Association in South Tamworth.
