William B. Peterson

ELIOT - William B. "Bill" Peterson, 61, formerly of Woburn, Mass., and Medford, Mass., died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 1999, at York Hospital.

Born June 13, 1938, in Malden, Mass., he was the son of the late Ena M. (Falconer) Peterson Spellman and Arthur W. Peterson.

He attended Norfolk County Agricultural School and was a construction superintendent in the industrial insulation field.

He and his family spent summer weekends in Eliot. He became a permanent resident of Eliot four years ago.

He was a member of the Asbestos Worker's Local No. 6, co-founder of Harbor Insulation in Woburn, and a Marine Corp veteran.

He was the husband of Maryellen V. (Palmisano) Peterson.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Karen A. Snook and her husband, David, of Eliot, and Kristen L. Cota and her husband, Anthony, of Reading, Mass.; a sister, Linda E. Peterson of Sterling; close family friend Kay-Lee Bell of Sterling; and two grandchildren, Anthony P. Cota and Heather L. Snook.

Viva N. Brown

NORTH HAMPTON - Viva N. Brown, 81, of 65 Woodland Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 1999 at the Exeter Hospital after a brief illness.

Born Feb. 18, 1911, in Grand Manan, New Brunswick, Canada, she was the daughter of the late Roy C. and Hattie (Naves) Nesbitt. She moved to Exeter with her family in 1920 and then to North Hampton in 1935. She was a 1930 graduate of the former Robinson Female Seminary in Exeter.

She worked for Ralston Tree Service for many years.

A member of Christ Episcopal Church in Exeter, she was also an associate member of the United Church of Christ in North Hampton. She was treasurer for the town of North Hampton for 11 years, and was superintendent of Sunday school, treasurer and auditor for the United Church of Christ. She was also a member of the Ladies Union of the United Church of Christ and of the North Hampton Women's Club.

She was the wife of the late Herbert T. Brown, who died in 1973. She was also predeceased by a sister, Todd Carter.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Margaret Brown of North Hampton; a daughter and son-in-law, Katharine and Willard Lajaunie of Kingwood, Tex.; a granddaughter, Meghan, and her husband, Todd Gustafson of Rockport, Maine; four grandsons, Jonathan Brown of Newmarket, Jared Brown of North Hampton, Adam Lajaunie of Austin, Tex., and Kent Lajaunie of Kingwood; her great-granddaughter, Sydney Gustafson; three sisters, Evelyn Callahan of Hampton, Margaret N. Brown of North Hampton, and Josephine Dining of Largo, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

George B. Underwood

MANCHESTER, Mich. - George B. Underwood III, 53, died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 1999.

Born April 9, 1946, in Boston, he was the son of George B. Underwood Jr. and Marie (Saunders) Underwood. He dedicated more than 20 years to the computer industry as a corporate sales and marketing expert.

He attended St. Mary's Catholic Church in Manchester, Mich.

He was the husband of Cynthia Valtin.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, George Underwood IV of Pinellas Park, Fla.; two daughters, Cecile Marie and Meaghan Underwood of Manchester; his mother, Marie Underwood of Portsmouth, N.H.; six sisters, Sister Pat Underwood CSJ of Richland, Mich., Sister Nina Underwood MMM of Nairobi, Kenya, Beth Underwood of Portsmouth, Marie (Thomas) Bader of Walton, Ky., Joan (Ken) Saunders of Erie, Pa., and Terry Delaney of Portsmouth; three nieces, Jennifer, Amy and Crystal Bader; and two nephews, Tony and Peter Laudenbaugh.

He was predeceased by his father and a son, Brian Thomas.

Claire M. Therrien

ROCHESTER - Claire M. (Penney) Therrien, 69, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999, at Riverside Rest Home after a lengthy illness.

Born Aug. 21, 1930, in Dover, N.H., she was the daughter of Mary Irene (Monahan) Penney. As a child, she resided in South Berwick, and graduated from St. Michael's Elementary School and Berwick Academy. She had resided in Rochester for 42 years.

She had been employed by General Electric Credit Union and, later, Willis Corroon in Rochester, before retiring in 1990.

She was a parishioner of St. Mary's Church and a member of the Farmington Country Club.

She was the wife of Ted (Edward) Therrien for 42 years.

In addition to her husband, survivors include her five children, Thomas Therrien of Kailua, Hawaii, Mary Therrien Bickford of Farmington, N.H., Timothy Therrien of Raymond, N.H., Kate Therrien Kelley of Rochester, N.H., and Jennifer Therrien Dias of Dover, N.H.; nine grandchildren, Katelyn, Kimberlee, Hannah, Griffin, Quinn, Bryan, Brock, Mackenzie and Maile.

She was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Penney.

Arthur H. Rogers

PORTSMOUTH - Arthur H. Rogers, 82, of 263 Rockland St., died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 1999, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born Jan. 22, 1917, in Portsmouth, he was the son of the late Harris D. and Katie J. (Hood) Rogers.

He was formerly employed as a foreman for the Morley Co. in Portsmouth.

He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, and was active with Alcoholics Anonymous.

He was the husband of the late Evelyn (Hosford) Rogers.

Survivors include two brothers, Earl E. Rogers and Dave E. Rogers, both of Portsmouth; four nieces, Virginia Kristoff and her husband, Alan, of Kittery, Priscilla Metalious of Rye, Abby Cooper of New Castle, and Mary Ann Jackson of Newburyport, Mass.; and a nephew, Scott Rogers of Carlsbad, Calif.

Helen L. Shine

HAMPTON - The funeral for Helen L. Shine, 84, of 95B Winnacunnet Road, was held Monday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. George E. Ham, pastor, was celebrant. Nelson K. Ward was organist and Patricia Mackensen was soloist. Acolytes were Pete Casavant, Rodolphe Begin and Thomas Gillick. The pall was placed on the casket by Patricia J. Morgan and Carol L. Simard, daughters of the deceased.

The readings were offered by her sons-in-law, Gerald "Jerry" Bateman and Duffy Morgan. The gifts were presented to the altar by her granddaughters. Words of remembrance were offered by her niece.

Burial followed in High Street Cemetery, with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Ham. Pallbearers were Brian Kelley, Neil Kelley, Jeff Kelley, Robert Morgan, Patrick Bateman and Thomas Crockett.

Edward C. Sharkey

PORTSMOUTH - A memorial Mass for Edward C. Sharkey was celebrated Monday, Nov. 29, 1999, at the Miraculous Medal Church by the Rev. Michael Griffin. Organist was Patricia Mackenson and soloist was Nelson Ward. Burial was in Taunton Catholic Cemetery, Taunton, Mass., where his sister, Margaret Sharkey, resides.

Beatrice R. Allen

YORK HARBOR - Beatrice R. Allen, 75, of 7 Norwood Circle, formerly a 35-year resident of Rye Beach, and Prescott, Ariz., died Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999, at York Hospital.

She was born July 4, 1924, in Reading, Mass.

During World War II, she served in the Coast Guard.

Active in local art groups, she also enjoyed hiking, reading, bridge and golf.

She was the wife of Russell C. Allen for 53 years.

In addition to her husband, survivors include six children, Laurie A. Carlock of San Diego, Calif., Andrea H. Krofina of Trumbull, Conn., Christopher M. Allen of North Woodstock, N.H., Eric Allen of North Hampton, Mark Allen of Rye, and Peter W. Allen of North Hampton; five grandchildren; a brother, Allan Ruderman of Duxbury, Mass.; and two sisters, Marion Sileo of Lake Placid, N.Y., and Nancy Theoming of High Springs, Fla.

Elizabeth Hankin

NEWMARKET - Elizabeth "Betty" Hankin, 84, formerly of Granite Street, died Dec. 3, 1999 at the Rockingham Nursing Home in Brentwood.

Born July 11, 1915, in Cambridge, Mass., she was the daughter of William P. and A. Elizabeth (Nagle) Adams. She graduated from Stoneham High School Class of 1932.

For many years, she lived in Newmarket before moving to Newfields, where she lived for 28 years. In 1984, she moved back to Newmarket.

She was employed as a clerk at Kingston-Warren Corp. in Newfields, and at Wentworth Lumber, Exeter Mfg. Co and Weiss Shoe, all of Exeter. She was a Town Clerk from 1970 to 1984.

She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, Newmarket, a charter member and former secretary of the Lamprey Aerie No. 1934 F.O.E. Auxiliary and past master of the Lamprey River Grange. She was also a member of the Robert G. Durgin American Legion Unit No. 67 in Newmarket.

She was predeceased by her husband, Fred M. Hankin, who died in 1967.

Survivors include two sons, Walter R. Small of Brentwood and Donald L. Small of Newmarket; five grandchildren, Mrs. Stephen (Paula) Hamilton of Brentwood, Walter Small Jr. of Brentwood, Stephen Small of Dover, Mrs. Nathan (Peggy) Margaret Small Porter of Newfields and Miss Patricia Small of Newmarket; four great-grandchildren, Stephen, Michael and Janelle Hamilton and Christopher Small; one uncle, Jeremiah Francis Nagle of Stoneham, Mass.; and several cousins.

Kimberly A. Werkelin Rowell

PORTSMOUTH - Kimberly Ann (Werkelin) Rowell, 21, of 75 Longmeadow Road, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born Nov. 3, 1978, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Peter W. and Sandra Anne (Bunting) Werkelin of Rye.

She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School Class of 1997 and had attended the NH Technical College in Stratham for American Sign Language.

She was a member and past worthy advisor of the International Order of the Rainbow and also served as past grand officer. She was an avid poetry writer and loved music.

She was the wife of Shawn Rowell of Portsmouth.

In addition to her parents and husband, survivors include a sister, Jennifer Werkelin of Keene; maternal grandparents, Richard and Anna Bunting of Rye Beach; and an uncle, Alan Bunting of North Hampton.

Edward F. Barron

CALABASH, N.C. - Edward F. "Eddie" Barron, 86, of 185 Calabash Drive NW, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 1999, at the Hospice Care Center, Wilmington, N.C.

Born Aug. 3, 1913, in Lawrence, Mass., he was the son of the late John W. and Mary Ellen (Daley) Barron.

An attendant of St. Patrick School in Portsmouth, he was a graduate of Portsmouth High School and St. Anselm College. He was a communicant of St. James Church and Immaculate Conception Church, both in Portsmouth.

He served in the Navy Submarine Service during World War II and was an employee at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a nuclear supervisor and was a member of both the Portsmouth Country Club and the Wentworth Country Club.

He was the husband of Barbara (Levesque) Barron of Calabash.

In addition to his wife, survivors include several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Frances E. (Moulton) Barron.

P. Anthony Penta

SEABROOK - P. Anthony Penta, M.D., 73, formerly of Melrose, Mass., died unexpectedly Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999.

Born in Everett, Mass., he graduated from Everett High School, Harvard University and the Boston University School of Medicine.

He also served in the Air Force and was a Korean War Veteran. He performed over 40,000 operations over a 35-year span at Melrose Wakefield Hospital, where he established many committees and developed one of the first one-day surgical patient care surgeries in the entire United States. He lived in Melrose for 27 years and spent the past two years in Seabrook.

He was the husband of Louise E. (Poisson) Penta.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, John Penta and his wife, Betsy, of Louisville, Ky., Douglas Penta and his wife, Laureanne, of Boston, and Paul Penta of Seabrook Beach; two daughters, Patricia Duffy and her husband, Mark, of Waban, Mass. and Adrienne Penta of Seabrook Beach; a brother, Edward Penta; seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Maria Cosentino.
