Rick Larence

PORTSMOUTH - Rick Larence, 63, also known as Anthony Richard Lacovara, of 1 Freedom Circle, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born in Elmhurst, N.Y., on Nov. 13, 1937, the son of Daniel and Mildred (Helmridge) Lacovara.

His radio career spanned six decades, starting as a producer for Wolfman Jack in the late 1950s. From the 1960s to the 1970s, he worked for Capitol Records and Mercury Records. In the northern New England area, he worked in Claremont, Portsmouth and Concord. More recently, he was employed by radio station WTSN in Dover where he was a sports talk show host and was known as Anthony.

He also had done some local cable television shows in Exeter and Portsmouth.

He was known as an "oldies expert," was an avid sports fan and, in his early years, enjoyed playing hockey.

Survivors include his daughter, Donna M. Rubolino of Robbinsville, N.J.; and a granddaughter, Dina Marie Rubolino of Robbinsville, N.J.

LARENCE - Rick Larence, 63, also known as Anthony Richard Lacovara, of 1 Freedom Circle, Portsmouth, died Dec. 9, 2000. Visiting hours will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad Street, Portsmouth. Friends invited. Graveside services will be held in New Jersey at a later date.

Lewis Prouty Bissell

JACKSON - Lewis Prouty Bissell, 82, died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation in North Conway after a period of failing health.

Born on April 27, 1918, in Medford, Mass., he was the son of the late Paul and Geraldine (Prouty) Bissell. He was a graduate of the University of New Hampshire, where he met and later married his wife. He then attended Yale University where he received a master's degree in forestry. He was a U.S. veteran, having served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Before retirement, he was employed by the University of Maine as the extension forester for the state of Maine. He was a member of the Appalachian Mountain Club, Old Hutmen's Association, Jackson Historical Society, New Hampshire Forestry Foundation, the Mount Washington Observatory, White Mountain Interpretive Association, Kiwanis, UNH Alumni Association, Girl Scouts and the Tree Farm Association. He spent his retirement years volunteering throughout the Mount Washington Valley, particularly in areas relating to conservation. For a period of time, he served as a conductor on the Conway Scenic Railroad, fulfilling a lifelong passion for trains which came second only to his love of antique automobiles.

Family members include his wife, of more than 50 years, Priscilla (Emery) Bissell; two daughters, Susan Beechum of Orlando, Fla., and Nancy Rancourt of Bartlett; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one sister, Liza Carroll of Madison, Conn.; and one niece and one nephew.

BISSELL - Lewis Prouty Bissell, 82, of Jackson, died Dec. 10, 2000, at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation in North Conway.

Cecelia Loring

GENEVA, Fla. - Cecelia Loring, 94, of Geneva, Fla., and a former resident of the Eliot and Kittery, Maine, area, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, following a long illness

She was born April 6, 1906, in Lynn, Mass., the daughter of the late Ferdinand and Adeline (Marqis) Gallant.

She grew up in Lynn and attended local schools in that area. She moved to the Eliot and Kittery area, where she lived for 45 years, before moving to Florida.

She married Alden P. Loring in 1937. He predeceased her in 1983.

She enjoyed making floral arrangements out of her home and for more than 30 years was an accomplished bowler having belonged to the Gat-A-Bouts bowling league of Portsmouth, N.H.. She and her late husband loved to travel and go camping together. For a number of years, she worked at Hoyts Stationary Store in Portsmouth.

She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Carol Davis of Orlando, Fla.; and a sister, Adeline Bejtlich of Saugus, Mass.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Beside her late husband, she was predeceased by her beloved son, Wayne Loring, who died in 1974. She was also predeceased by six sisters, Marie Sargent, Josephine Forest Beatrice Boivin, Lillian Amee, and her twin sisters, Gertrude Amero and Genevieve Gallant; and five brothers, Freeman, Edward, Walter, Ferdinand and George Gallant.

She will be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother, homemaker and a friend, who's love and generosity touched all who knew her.

LORING - Cecelia (Gallant) Loring, 94, of Geneva, Fla., and formerly of the Eliot and Kittery, Maine, area died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday at St. Raphael's Catholic Church, Kittery, with the Rev. Real Nadeau celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. A graveside committal service and burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. until time for the funeral on Friday at Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery.

Gertrude I. Weston

HAMPTON - Gertrude I. Weston, 95, died Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, at Seacoast Health Center.

Born in South Berwick, Maine, on Aug. 24, 1905, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Lillian (Warren) Hilbourne.

She resided in Portsmouth for most of her life and had worked as a clerk at the former Bernard's Millinery in Portsmouth for many years.

She was the widow of John H. Weston and was predeceased by three sisters and one brother.

Family members include one son, George P. Frost Jr., of Dover; two daughters, Sandra Berounsky of York, Maine, and Norma Pierce of Pensacola, Fla.; one stepson, Robert Weston of Barrington; one sister, Maxine Burke of Dover; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service was held Monday in High Street Cemetery. The Rev. Carroll Moore, pastor of the United Methodist Church, officiated. If desired, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Richard P. Simonds

KITTERY, Maine - Richard P. Simonds, 73, of 150 Whipple Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at York Hospital, after a lengthy battle with lung cancer.

Born in Portsmouth, N.H., on Feb. 6, 1927, he was the son of George and Marie (Pauze) Simonds. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy.

He spent many years working construction and retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1997. Among his fondest memories were the two years he spent in Alaska employed by the Bureau of Fisheries and time spent with the Tlingit Indians as a cook on their fishing barge. More recently, he enjoyed spending time with his wife discovering his Native American heritage and culture. He also loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Diane (Genestreti) Simonds of Kittery; a son, Charles Simonds, and his wife, Carolyn, of Kittery; and a daughter, Cindy Leary of South Berwick; eight beloved grandchildren; two sisters, Catherine Boucher of Northglenn, Colo., and Theresa Dietch of Port Orange, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

SIMONDS - Richard P. Simonds, 73, of 150 Whipple Road, Kittery, Maine, died Dec. 12, 2000. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, N.H. Visiting hours are from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday. Interment will be in Harmony Grove Cemetery in Portsmouth. Family flowers only, please. Memorials may be made to either the Native American Intertribal Foundation, P.O. Box 117, Gorham, Maine 04038-0117; or to the Fiddlehead Food Pantry, 132 North Main St., Brewer, Maine 04412.

Richard P. Remick

RYE - Richard P. Remick, 53, of 326 Brackett Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born in Portsmouth on July 29, 1947, the son of Sherman A. and Phyllis (Thompson) Remick.

He worked for many years for Great Bay Services and Training Center in Newington.

Survivors include a brother, James Remick, and his wife, Linette; a niece; a nephew; grandnieces; aunts; uncles; cousins; and his loving caregiver, Cora Keene of Portsmouth.

REMICK - Richard P. Remick, 53, of 326 Brackett Road, Rye, died Dec. 12, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held one hour prior to the servic, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Flowers will be accepted or donations in his memory may be made to the Great Bay Services, Old Dover Road, Newington, NH 03801.

DUNLEAVY - Janet Egleson Dunleavy, died Dec. 10, 2000, at her home in Exeter. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 640-650 West 168th St., New York, NY 10032-9982. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 13, at Riverwoods at Exeter, 7 Riverwoods Drive, Exeter. Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, is handling the arrangements.

Amporn Albert

KITTERY, Maine - Amporn Albert, 50, died Friday evening, Dec. 8, 2000, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital in Portsmouth, N.H.

She was born Sept. 12, 1950, in Bangkok, Thailand, the daughter of Sanun and Upa (Jutsongai) Potong.

She came to America and lived in Portsmouth before she moved and settled in Kittery, where she had lived for the past three years.

She worked for the Watts Fluid Air Company in Kittery for 17 years. She enjoyed gardening, arts and crafts, reading, watching TV and movies, and being a mother to her three beloved daughters: Jennifer Ross, Melissa Ross and Tabatha Gilmore, all of Kittery. Besides her daughters, she is survived by her grandson, Isaiah Smith, who was her pride and joy. She also has a brother and two sisters, who live in Thailand.

Amporn was well liked and respected by her many friends and former co-workers, and will be deeply missed by all of them.

ALBERT - Amporn Albert, 50, of Kittery, died Friday evening, Dec. 8, 2000, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital in Portsmouth, N.H. A memorial service to celebrate her life will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at the Advent Christian Church, 634 State St., Portsmouth, with the Rev. Russell Carle officiating. There will be no visitation hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery.

Elwyn Richard Boston

YORK BEACH, Maine - Elwyn Richard Boston, 89, died Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, at his residence after a long illness.

He was born on Jan. 17, 1911, in Portsmouth, N.H., the son of John Frank and Freda (Kinder) Boston. He was a graduate of Dover High School and received a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of New Hampshire in 1933.

He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, where he trained as a professional photographer.

He devoted his working life to the Goldenrod in York Beach, first as an employee of F.G. and Irma Wagner and later as a co-owner. He retired as president in 1975 but remained actively involved until 1997.

He was a long-time member of the Unitarian-Universalist Church (South Church) in Portsmouth, where he had served on several committees.

He was a dedicated member of the Board of Trustees of Ellis Park in York Beach for over 30 years and served many terms as chairman. In addition to serving on several other local boards and committees, he was a member of the York Beach Volunteer Fire Department, the American Legion, St. Aspinquid Lodge #198 A.F. & A.M., the Scottish Rite of the Valley of Portland, and the Kora Temple Shrine.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Constance (Smart) Boston, of York Beach; two daughters, Alfreda (Boston) Furnas, of Eustis, Fla., and Laurinda J. (Boston) Bridges and her husband, Leslie, of York; one son, Richard Elwyn Boston and his wife, Kathleen, of York; several grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

BOSTON - Elwyn Richard Boston, of York Beach, died Dec. 8, in York Beach. Memorial service and ritualistic Masonic services will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Portsmouth, 292 State St., Portsmouth. The family requests that memorial donations be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02114.

Sandra A. Freeman Burns

SACO, Maine - Sandra A. Freeman Burns, 56, of 330 Main St., died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine.

She was born in York on Jan. 13, 1944, the daughter of Dorothy Freeman and was adopted by her grandparents, Leslie E. and Alice M. Freeman, and attended York High School.

She was employed as a private-duty nursing assistant.

She was a long-time resident of York. She enjoyed collecting unicorns and was an animal lover and had great compassion for helping others.

Survivors include one son, Frederick James Maloy III, of Portland, Maine; one daughter, Crystal Ann Maloy, of Rochester, N.H.; two sisters, Nikki M. Freeman Lambert, of Biloxi, Miss., and Julie M. Freeman Tuttle, of Daytona Beach, Fla.; and four grandchildren, Ashley, Desarai, Tara and Brandon.

BURNS - Sandra A. Freeman Burns, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, in the First Parish Cemetery, York.

Janet Egleson Dunleavy

EXETER - Janet Egleson Dunleavy, 71, died on Dec. 10, 2000, at her home, from complications associated with Parkinson's disease. She was an author, editor and professor emerita of English and comparative literature at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where she was a pioneer in women's studies and Irish studies.

Born Janet Marie Frank in Brooklyn, N.Y., she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at Manhattan's Hunter College in 1951. In 1978, she was elected to Hunter's Hall of Fame. She was awarded a doctorate in English literature in 1966 by New York University and did post-doctoral study at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies in 1978 and 1981. In 1986 she was named Senior Fulbright Lecturer at Tel Aviv University in Israel, where she taught courses in James Joyce's "Ulysses" and Irish folklore. In both 1984 and 1989, she was a fellow of the Camargo Foundation in Cassis, France.

Her teaching career began at Hunter College. In 1969 she was appointed assistant professor of English and master of Ruth Benedict College at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. She joined the faculty of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1970, where she rose to the rank of full professor and coordinator of Irish studies.

She began writing for the Little Golden Books series in the early 1950s. She authored several popular children's books, such as "Daddies" (also published in France, Spain and Latin America) and "Happy Days." In 1961, she co-authored "Parents Without Partners" (Dutton) with her then husband, James D. Egleson. In 1977, together with Gareth W. Dunleavy, she wrote and compiled "The O'Conor Papers" (University of Wisconsin Press), a cross-disciplinary study of the archives of one of Ireland's oldest families.

In 1983-84, along with Gareth W. Dunleavy, she was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship to write the biography of Douglas Hyde, Ireland's first president. The work, titled "Douglas Hyde: A Maker of Modern Ireland" (University of California Press), was published in 1991 and was hailed by critics in both the United States and Ireland as "comprehensive ... captivating ... and brilliantly-written."

She was the editor of the Newsletter of the American Committee for Irish Studies from 1971 to 1978, and by her retirement in 1993 she had written and presented more than 50 essays, monographs and lectures in addition to her published books.

She is survived by her husband and colleague of 30 years, Gareth W. Dunleavy; three children, Karen Galat, of Newburyport, Mass., Gweneth Dunleavy, of Louisville, Ky., and Stephen Dunleavy, of Stateline, Nev.; three sisters, Evelyn Mills, of Claremore, Okla., Patricia Frank (Sister Francis Marie) of Newark, N.J., and Barbara Benefield, of Red Bluff, Calif.; and six grandchildren, Ashley and Christopher Galat, of Newburyport, Megan and Ian Ferré, of Louisville, and Alison and Kerry Dunleavy of Stateline.

Patricia R. Metcalf

ANDOVER, N.H. - Patricia R. Metcalf, 60, of 128 Dyers Crossing Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

Born in Perry, Maine, on May 9, 1940, the daughter of Herbert H. and Evelyn (Bishop) Adams, she had been a resident of Rollinsford, N.H., for more than 11 years prior to moving to Andover one year ago.

She was employed at the Andover Shop 'n Save supermarket, had formerly worked at the Dover Shop 'n Save and had also worked for the Riche's Department Store.

She was a member of the Rollinsford Unit #47, American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by her fiancé, Ken Heath, of Andover; a daughter, Marianne Thompson and her friend, Butch Sculley, of Coxsackie, N.Y.; three sons, John S. Metcalf and his wife, Ann, of Rollinsford, N.H., Richard Metcalf and his wife, Deborah, of Eliot, Maine, and Stan Metcalf, of Dover, N.H.; 17 grandchildren; a sister, Ethel Hughey, of Nashua, N.H.; two brothers, Richard Adams, of Perry, Maine, and Wilford Adams, of Albany, Ga.; a step-brother, Bruce Ingalls, of Machias, Maine; and nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, two step-sisters, Bonnie Foye and Barbara Beal, predeceased her.

Pauline L. Pelech

SCARBOROUGH, Maine - Pauline L. Pelech, 82, formerly of Hinsdale, N.H., died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000. Born Dec. 5, 1917, in Yonkers, N.Y., she was the daughter of William and Mary (Pudlik) Lernatowitz.

She is survived by a son, Bernard W. Pelech, of Portsmouth; a daughter, Terri Rubeor, of Scarborough; and two sisters, Stella Bilmon, of Manchester, Conn., and Anne Matuszewski, of Hinsdale; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Bernard P. Pelech, in September 1988; a daughter, Josephine Qualters; a brother, John; and a sister, Tessie Wilt.

Funeral services and burial were private. Donations in her name may be made to Cross Roads House, Lafayette Road, Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Florence M. Vinton

YORK - Florence M. Vinton, 78, formerly of Yorkshire Commons, 155 York St., died Monday, Dec. 11, at York Harbor Health Care at Sentry Hill.

She was born on May 7, 1922, in Bronx, N.Y., the daughter of Arthur and Frances (Crogent) Bowman and was a 1939 graduate of Morris High School in the Bronx.

She was an office manager for Dr. Theodore Rosen in Manchester, Conn., for 15 years. She had formerly worked at Sears & Roebuck and Burton's Women's Apparel in Manchester, Conn.

She had resided in Andover and Manchester, Conn., for many years, moving to York in 1991.

She was a communicant of St. Christopher-by-the-Sea Church of York and was a former volunteer at the York Hospital and a member of the York Hospital Auxiliary. She had also been a volunteer at the Manchester, Conn., Memorial Hospital.

She was predeceased by her husband, George A. Vinton, who died in 1980.

Survivors include one son, Kenneth Dahlquist, of Andover, Conn.; two daughters, June F. Buggie, of Duluth, Ga., and Deborah F. Crickmore, of York; one brother, Arthur Bowman, of Hudson, Fla.; one sister, Carol Mackie, of Long Island, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

VINTON - Florence M. Vinton, formerly of 155 York St., York, Maine, died Dec. 11, 2000, in York. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Christopher Church, York Street, York. Interment will be in the First Parish Cemetery. Visiting hours will be 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, Maine. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, N.E. Division, Inc., 52 Federal St., Brunswick, ME 04011.

Russell E. Ficke

NEWMARKET - Russell E. Ficke, 42, of 39 Stagecoach Road, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at his home.

He was born Nov. 16, 1958, in Lubbock, Texas, the son of Robert J. Ficke of Dover and the late Suzanne M. (Tunney) Ficke. He was raised in Hampton and had lived in various parts of the country before moving to Newmarket several months ago.

He worked for several years in the construction trades both as a carpenter and ironworker. In recent years he had traveled with a carnival operator, erecting and operating a Ferris wheel.

He was a 1976 graduate of Winnacunnet High School.

He was predeceased by his mother, who died in 1985, and by his sister, Mary Elizabeth Ficke, in 1981.

In addition to his father, family members include three brothers, Robert J. Ficke Jr. of York Harbor, Maine, John F. Ficke of Torrington, Conn., and Daniel E. Ficke of Sacramento, Calif.; two sisters, Patricia F. Doyon of Concord, and Kathleen F. Stewart of Altus, Okla.; his stepmother, Mary Lou Ficke of Dover; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
