Barbara P. Abbott

PORTSMOUTH - Barbara P. Abbott, 69, of 35 Swett Ave., died Monday, April 2, 2001, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

She was born in Newburyport, Mass., April 30, 1931, the daughter of the late William and Yvonne (Perreault) Chisnall.

She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School with the Class of 1949 and attended the University of New Hampshire.

She worked for Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. for several years and then as a secretary at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 14 years, retiring in 1983.

She attended St. James Church and was a former member of the Portsmouth Lions Club.

She was the wife of the late Bernard L. Abbott, who died in 1984.

Family members include one daughter, Debra A. Page and her husband, Skip, of Cornwall, N.Y.; one son, Michael W. Abbott and his wife, Marie, of Cornish, Maine; one sister, Theresa A. Apt of Portsmouth; three grandchildren, Evan M., Emma W. and Lillian L.; a niece; a nephew; three great-nephews; and several cousins.

ABBOTT - Barbara P. Abbott, 69, of 35 Swett Ave., Portsmouth, died April 2, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday at St. James Church, Portsmouth. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Family flowers only. If desired, donations may be made to the Apt Family Memorial Scholarship, c/o Bank of New Hampshire, P.O. Box 238, Greenland, NH 03840.

Robert S. Black

EXETER - Robert Smallwood Black, of RiverWoods, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 27, 2001.

Born Jan. 13, 1909, in Zanesville, Ohio, he was the son of Robert S. and Dollie (VanVoorhis) Black. Following his higher education at Dartmouth College (B.A.) and Columbia University (M.A.), he taught for two years at the American University of Beirut, Beirut, Lebanon; and for five years at the Friends School, Wilmington, Del. In 1941 he married Barbara Bell Black, who also taught at the Friends School.

In World War II, he served in the Naval Reserve overseas at the American Embassy, Quito, Ecuador; and in this country at Civil Affairs Training Schools, University of Chicago first, and then Harvard University. Following the war, he went into the Foreign Service of the U.S. State Department. He had one assignment in Washington, D.C., and served abroad in Egypt, Japan, Mexico, Indonesia, Canada and Thailand.

He and his wife retired to Cape Neddick, Maine, in 1970. When Mrs. Black died in 1993, he moved to RiverWoods at Exeter. He is survived by cousins in different parts of the United States.

Samuel Lazerowich

WORCESTER, Mass. - Funeral services and burial for Samuel Lazerowich, 85, of 17 Fairlawn Drive, Worcester, Mass., were held on Sunday, April 1, in Worcester, Mass.

He was born in Poland on Aug. 15, 1915, and immigrated to the United States in 1923.

He leaves his wife of 55 years, Miriam (Siel) Lazerowich; his two sons and their families, Steven and his wife, Valerie, and their children, Craig and Caryn, of Rockville, Md., Howard and his wife, Karen, and their sons, Alex and Jeff, of Stratham, N.H.; his brother, Haskell Lazerowich and his wife, Marlene; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Annie.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jewish Healthcare Center, 629 Salisbury St., Worcester, MA 01609.

Joseph E. MacDonald III

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Joseph E. MacDonald III, 32, formerly of Hampton, N.H., died Saturday, March 31, 2001.

Born in Exeter, N.H. he worked at Foamex.

Survivors are his wife, Elizabeth; a daughter, Alyssa, of Fort Wayne; his parents, Carol and Frank Glavin, both of Fort Wayne; his father, Joseph E. MacDonald Jr., of Hampton, N.H.; a brother, Matt Glavin, of Fort Wayne; three sisters, Sarah MacDonald of Fort Wayne, Kelly Carrero of Lorain, Ohio, and Andrea Fadley of Dover-Foxcroft, Maine; two grandmothers, Hannah MacDonald, of Hampton, N.H., and Florence Crom, of Fort Wayne.

MACDONALD - Joseph E. MacDonald III, 32, formerly of Hampton, N.H., died Saturday, March 31, 2001. Services will be at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at a funeral home in Fort Wayne, Ind. Burial will be in Catholic Cemetery.

Ellen F. Washburn

LIVERMORE FALLS, Maine - Ellen F. Washburn, 82, died late Sunday night, April 1, in the comfort of her home on Munsey Avenue with her family at her side.

She was born Jan. 9, 1918, in Kittery Point, Maine, the daughter of Charles G. and Cordelia (Wildes) Tobey. She received her education in Beverly, Mass., graduating from Beverly High School in the Class of '35.

She continued her education at Hawthorne Business School in Salem, Mass.

She was employed at a fish market in Salem, Mass., and moved back to Kittery Point, where she was employed by a finance company. She retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard after 20 years of service and on August 25, 1962, married S. Paul Washburn at the Kittery Point Congregational Church.

After moving to Livermore Falls, she was one of the first employees during the construction of the Androscoggin Mill, International Paper Co., and worked in the engineering department. She later was a bookkeeper for New England Furniture Co. and Dunton Department Stores in Livermore Falls.

She joined, by baptism, the First Baptist Church in Livermore Falls and for many years served as the financial secretary of the church. She was also an active member of the American Baptist Women.

She was active in many fraternal organizations. She was a 50-year member of the Rebekahs, the Order of the Eastern Star and Pythian Sisters. She was a past president of The Rebekah Assembly of Maine, a past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star in both Kittery and Livermore Falls, and was a secretary of the local lodge of Pythian Sisters.

She served as secretary and treasurer of the Northeast Odd Fellows Association, an association of members from the New England states and the provinces of Quebec and the Atlantic provinces. She is the last surviving charter member of the Nurses Training Scholarship Fund, a program supported by Maine Odd Fellows and Rebekahs to relieve a nursing shortage in the state. This program originated in 1957. She has been a member ever since and has been secretary for many years.

She enjoyed participating in family activities, especially at Thanksgiving and Christmas. She enjoyed her camp at Sebec Lake and both school and family reunions. Ellen's angel food cakes were in demand at fraternal and church activities throughout the years.

She is survived by her husband, S. Paul Washburn of Livermore Falls; her brother, Charles G. Tobey Jr. and his wife, Alice Tobey, of Eliot; four nephews; one niece; one cousin; eight grandnephews and -nieces; and three great-grandnephews and nieces.

WASHBURN - Ellen Frances T. Washburn, 82, of Livermore Falls, Maine, died April 1, 2001, in Livermore Falls. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the First Baptist Church, Church Street, Livermore Falls. Family and friends are invited to call from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Wiles Funeral Home, 308 Franklin Rd. (Rte. 133), Jay, Maine. In the evening, members of the OES Mt. Olivet Chapter #29 of Auburn will have a service followed by Charity Rebekah Lodge #6. Those who desire may give gifts in her memory to either the First Baptist Church, 25 Church St., Livermore Falls, ME 04254, Attn: Irene Couture, or to the Odd Fellows & Rebekahs Nurses Training Scholarship Fund, c/o S. Paul Washburn, 22 Munsey Ave., Livermore Falls, ME 04254. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. Winter entombment will be at the funeral home. Spring burial will be at the First Parish Cemetery, York.

Linda A. Carlisle

PORTSMOUTH - Linda A. Carlisle, 85, formerly of 942 Middle Road, died Monday, April 2, 2001, at the Mark Wentworth Home. Born in Portsmouth on Sept. 26, 1915, she was the daughter of Primo and Candida (Zavalloni) Turci. She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School with the Class of 1933.

Together with her husband, the late Milton Carlisle, she owned and operated Carlisle Cleaners in York, Maine, from 1953 until her retirement in 1995.

She was a former member of the Portsmouth Country Club and the Twilight League.

She was a loving and hardworking woman who was completely devoted to her husband and children, to her family, and to her customers throughout her life. She derived much enjoyment from her family and from her many years of service to the public.

Survivors include two daughters, Joanne Carpenter of Acton, Mass., and Judith Santarelli and her husband, Ken, of Kensington; one son, George Carlisle and his wife, Susan, of New Castle; 10 grandchildren, Lynn, Lisa, Michael, Matthew, Samuel, Abigail, Jacquelyn, Amy, John, and Elizabeth; two great-grandchildren, Madison and Jonah; a brother, George Turci and his wife, Carol, of North Hampton; a sister, Nita Mitchell and her husband, Gerald, of Kittery, Maine; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, John Turci.

CARLISLE - Linda A. Carlisle, 85, formerly of 942 Middle Road, died April 2, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the North Congregational Church in Market Square. Visiting hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Family flowers only please. Memorials may be made to either the Mark Wentworth Home Social Activities Fund, 346 Pleasant St., Portsmouth, NH 03801, or to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Dorothy B. Santoro

PORTSMOUTH - Dorothy B. "Dotty" Santoro, 74, of 188 Jones Ave., died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at SunBridge of Portsmouth.

She was born in Baileyville, Maine, on Oct. 22, 1926, the daughter of Gertrude (James) Bates and George K. Bates. She attended Portsmouth schools.

Survivors include a daughter, Cassandra A. Lawrence and her husband, Richard K., of Eliot, Maine; two grandchildren, Nicole L. Richards of Eliot and Shawn W. Gerry of Dover; three great-grandchildren, Brianna M. Richards, Alexandra I. Richards and Lucas W. Gerry; one sister-in-law, Joyce Massaro; and her good friend Midge Whitaker.

PORTSMOUTH - William H. Eslinger, 72, of 31 Taft Road, died on Monday, April 2, 2001, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a long illness.

Born in Kittery, Maine, at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Quarters S, on March 26, 1929, he was the son of the late Ross and Dorothy (Tucker) Eslinger.

He attended schools in Portsmouth. He was a master sergeant in the United States Army, stationed in Germany. He was employed at Callahan Oil in Portsmouth and then was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a master pipefitter in Shop 56 for 25 years until his retirement.

He was a long-standing communicant of Christ Church in Portsmouth, where he was a former member of the choir and an active member of the vestry for many years.

He was most recently a dedicated volunteer at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He leaves his wife of 49 years, Herma M. (Köcher) Eslinger of Portsmouth; his son, Franz W. (Bill) Eslinger and his wife, Jane, of Dover; his granddaughter and pride and joy, Hilary; his sister, Pat Monagle of Milwaukee, Wis.; a niece, Joanne and her family; three nephews, Bob, Bill, Ross and their families; and many beloved friends.

SANTORO - Dorothy B. "Dotty" Santoro, 74, of 188 Jones Ave., Portsmouth, died April 3, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Chapel. Flowers will be accepted.

William H. Eslinger

PORTSMOUTH - William H. Eslinger, 72, of 31 Taft Road, died on Monday, April 2, 2001, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a long illness.

ESLINGER - William H. Eslinger, 72, of 31 Taft Road, Portsmouth, died April 2, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Christ Episcopal Church, 1035 Lafayette Road, Portsmouth. Friends are invited. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Christ Church Columbarium Fund, 1035 Lafayette Road, Portsmouth, NH 03801. Arrangements are by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.

Joseph Emery Dupuis

PORTSMOUTH - Joseph Emery Dupuis, 80, of Portsmouth, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation of Exeter.

Born in Memramcook East, New Brunswick, Canada, on May 30, 1920, he was the son of the late Livain and Alice (Dupuis) Dupuis.

Raised in Canada, he attended local schools including St. Joseph's College and later two years of seminary school, also in Canada.

In 1948, he settled in the Lynn, Mass., area and started a longtime career with United Engineers & Construction Co., retiring in the mid-1980s as chief timekeeper.

He resided in Portsmouth for more than 35 years. After his retirement he worked as the outdoor yard manager at the Flower Wagon, a florist shop in Hampton that his wife owned and operated. He loved gardening and was a communicant of St. James Church.

He was the husband of Lorraine F. "Lorrie" (Johnson) Dupuis for 58 years.

In addition to his wife, family members include four sons, Emery J. Dupuis of Kinnelon, N.J.; Oscar J. Dupuis of Oxford, Pa.; Charles L. Dupuis of Wilmington, N.C.; and Gerard J. Dupuis of Ashton, Pa.; two daughters, Celia M. Connors of Mullica Hill, N.J.; and Alice M. Holding of Portsmouth; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Emma LeBlanc and Annie Cormier, both of Shediac, NB, Canada; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Marie Ellen Dupuis, who died in 1998.

DUPUIS - Joseph Emery Dupuis, 80, of Portsmouth, died April 4, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. James Church, Portsmouth, Saturday at 8:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, Friday, from 7 to 9 p.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Portsmouth.

Raymond W. St. Pierre

NEWMARKET - Raymond W. St. Pierre, 75, of Pine Street, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at Langdon Place of Dover.

Born July 22, 1925, in Newmarket, he was the son of Wilfred and Dora (St. Hilaire) St. Pierre. He was a lifelong resident of Newmarket.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Force. He was a 1941 graduate of Newmarket High School.

For many years he was employed as a draftsman at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He was active in the Senior Olympics and won several medals in basketball, javelin, discus, shot-put, long jump and high jump. He attended the National Senior Games in 1993 in Louisiana.

He was a member of the Robert G. Durgin A.L. Post No. 67, Lamprey Aerie No. 1934 F.O.E., and was an active parishioner of St. Mary's Church in Newmarket.

He was a devoted father and grandfather.

His wife, Helen Rae (Truvally) St. Pierre, died in 1984.

Survivors include a son, Paul St. Pierre and his wife, Diane, of Barrington; a daughter, Maurine Cable and her husband, Stephen, of East Rochester; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother, Norman St. Pierre of Newmarket; a sister, Marianne Brown of San Antonio, Texas; and one niece and one nephew.

ST. PIERRE - Raymond W. St. Pierre, 75, of Pine Street, Newmarket, died April 3, 2001. Visiting hours will be held today (Thursday), from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket. American Legion services will be held at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10 a.m. from St. Mary's Church in Newmarket. Family flowers only and should friends desire, memorials may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 27 Harvey Road, Bedford, NH 03110; or to the American Diabetes Association, 249 Canal St., Manchester, NH 03101.
