Arline B. Grant

PORTSMOUTH - Arline B. (Burgess) Grant, 81, widow of Charles W. Grant, Blossom Street, died Thursday, April 26, 2001, at her home.

Born in Augusta, Maine, on April 27, 1920, she was a daughter of the late Percy E. and Sylvia (Haskell) Burgess. She attended Portsmouth schools and was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1938.

She was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard during World War II.

Survivors include three children, Charles B. Grant of Midland, Mich., Gary J. Grant of Portsmouth, and Kathy J. Grant of North Hampton; three grandchildren, Charlotte E. Grant of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Ryan Harned and Greg Harned, both of North Hampton; two sisters, Margaret Place of Eliot, Maine, and Barbara Earle of York Beach, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Percy E. Burgess Jr. of Portsmouth.

Roger W. Guilbault

PORTSMOUTH - Roger W. Guilbault, 63, of 77 Merrimac St., died Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at his home.

Born in West Warwick, R.I., on July 26, 1937, he was the son the late Ernest G. and Stella (Jennings) Guilbault. He attended Catholic schools in West Warwick and graduated from West Warwick High School, Class of 1955, where he was a drummer in the high school band.

After graduating from high school, he entered the U.S. Air Force. He was last stationed at Pease Air Force Base as a fire inspector.

Roger was formerly a firefighter with the Portsmouth Fire Department. In 1962, he opened Gil's Trading Center in Portsmouth. After retiring in 1998, he worked part time at the Linwood Crematory in Haverhill, Mass. He was also a bail commissioner for the city of Portsmouth, a notary public, and justice of the peace.

He was a member of St. John's Lodge No. 1 F&AM of Portsmouth and the Portsmouth Athenaeum. Roger was a drummer with the Gus Fiore Trio.

Roger cared for and helped many people through the year.

Survivors include a daughter, June Pinney and her husband, Corey, of South Berwick, Maine; a son, Roger W. Guilbault Jr. of Greenland; a grandson, Evan Crowder; a granddaughter, Chastity Pinney; and his friend of 12 years, Mary Carmichael.

John G. Stringos Jr.

ROCHESTER - John G. Stringos Jr., 54, of 209 Milton Road, died suddenly Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at his home.

Born in Winchester, Mass., March 6, 1947, he was the son of the late John and Marion (Brooks) Stringos. He had worked in security at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for the past several years.

He was a member of the Blue Knights Maine Chapter No. 5 and a veteran of Vietnam, serving in the Army.

He is survived by a sister, Jewell Stringos; a brother, Richard Daigle; three nephews; and his ex-wife, Christine (Hines) Stringos.

Private services were held at Wildwood Cemetery in Wilmington, Mass.

Donations in his memory can be made to any Vietnam Veteran Association.

Richard N. DeCost

HAMPTON - The funeral for Richard N. DeCost, 65, of 17 Godfrey Ave., was held Friday from the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. The Rev. Michael J. Griffin, senior priest, was the celebrant. Nelson Ward was organist and Patricia Mackensen was the soloist.

Altar servers were George Glenfield, John Sullivan and Bob Griesemere. The readings were by Diane Smith and Diane Hayes. The pall was placed on the casket by Colleen and Ron Clay and the cross was placed on the pall by Janet Shea. The gifts were presented to the altar by Ashley and Jesse Zaverucka. Words of remembrance were offered by Mr. DeCost's daughter, Donna J. DeCost.

Cremation followed the Mass. Pallbearers were Richard D. DeCost, Scott A. DeCost, Donna J. DeCost, Michael Broderick, Ron Clay and David Wilson.

Bernadette L. Bernier

EPPING - Bernadette L. Bernier, 91, of Railroad Avenue, died Thursday, April 26, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, after a brief illness.

Born March 22, 1910 in Brentwood, N.H., she was the daughter of the late Napoleon and Roseanna (Jolicoeur) Talbot.

She had grown up in Brentwood, and for the last 72 years she had been a resident of Epping.

She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Epping. She was very active with the landscaping and planting at the church and at her home.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ernest A. Bernier, who died June 22, 1984.

She is survived by one son, Ernest A. Bernier Jr. and wife, Karen, of Dover, N.H.; three daughters, Victorine and Robert KillKelley, of Merrimack, N.H.; Norita Bernier of Raymond, N.H., and Lynnanne and Arthur Byron, of Rangeley, Maine; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Edward Talbot and Raymond Talbot, both of Manchester, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews.

BERNIER - Bernadette L. Bernier, 91, of Railroad Ave., Epping, N.H., died April 26, 2001. Calling hours will be held from 3 to 6 p.m., Sunday, April 29, at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 8 Pleasant St., Epping. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Monday, April 30. Father Ronald Corriveau will be the celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Epping. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to St. Joseph's Church, 208 Pleasant St., Epping, NH 03042, or to the Precious Blood Monestary, 700 Bridge St., Manchester, N.H.

Francis J. Donahue Sr.

SHAPLEIGH, Maine - Francis J. Donahue Sr., 74, of Channel Circle, formerly of North Hampton, N.H., died Thursday, April 26, 2001, at the Maine Medical Center in Portland.

He was born in Malden, Mass., Nov. 9, 1926, the son of the late Bernard D. and Adeline B. (MacNeill) Donahue.

Mr. Donahue was a graduate of Perley High School, Georgetown, Mass., and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy.

He co-founded New England Homes Inc., in 1961, a manufacturer of modular homes, which is presently located in Greenland, N.H. He retired in the mid 1980's after 25 years of service.

Mr. Donahue was a former communicant of St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach, and former member of the Knights of Columbus Council in Georgetown, Mass. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, boating, gardening and woodworking.

He was the husband of the late Doris R. (Roberts) Donahue who died in 1982, and had resided in Shapleigh the past 15 years, coming form North Hampton.

Family members include three sons, Francis J. Donahue Jr., of Kennebunk, Maine, Michael J. Donahue of North Hampton, N.H., Marc T. Donahue of Georgetown, Mass.; three daughters, Adele M. Polizzotti of Groveland, Mass., Elizabeth J. Brown of Epping, N.H., Cheryl L. Brown of Falmouth, Maine; 15 grandchildren; six brothers, Bernard of Lynnfield, Mass., Bradford of South Berwick, Maine., Richard of Northwood, N.H., Ronald of Danvers, Mass., Robert of North Conway, N.H., Daniel of North Hampton, N.H.; three sisters, Frances Burrell-Cusack of Westborough, Mass., Marie Mueller of Reading, Mass., Ramona Donahue of Topsfield, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

DONAHUE - Francis J. Donahue Sr., of Shapleigh, Maine, formerly of North Hampton, died April 26, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Tuesday, at St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach, N.H. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 3-5 p.m., Sunday, and from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Monday, at the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in the Center Cemetery, North Hampton. If desired, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Patricia Ann Wiley

LOWELL, Mass. - Patricia Ann Wiley, 69, of Lowell and formerly of Kittery, Maine, died Thursday, April 26, 2001, following a long illness at the Sunbridge-Glenwood Care Center of Lowell, Mass.

Born July 29, 1931 in Portsmouth, N.H., she was the daughter of the late Alan and Muriel (Langton) Wiley. She attended the local school and graduated from Traip Academy in Kittery.

She was a trained clerk typist, who left Kittery to pursue her career in the secretarial field. She lived in Kansas City for a while, working as a clerk-typist for the Kansas City Blues minor league baseball team. She then enlisted in the Air Force, where she served her country proud in Japan during the Korean Conflict. She was discharged from the service in 1955 as an Airman First Class. She loved participating in American Legion activities, especially meals that the various legion posts put on at the nursing home she resided at.

Over the years, she had suffered poor health and had been hospitalized and living in nursing care facilities throughout Massachusetts.

She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Betty Chapman of Kittery, Maine; a brother, Alan Wiley Jr. of Warrenton, Mo.; and several nieces, nephews and grandnieces.

She was predeceased by a sister, Mrs. Barbara Willson.

WILEY - Patricia Ann Wiley, 69, of Lowell, Mass., died April 26, 2001. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, April 30, at Orchard Grove Cemetery in Kittery. There will be no funeral services or visitation hours. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory be sent to Counseling Services Inc., P.O. Box 1684, Saco, ME 04972.

Sophie P. Berounsky

PORTSMOUTH - Sophie P. Berounsky, 81, of 16 Brackett Road, died peacefully on Friday, April 27, 2001, surrounded by her husband of 52 years, Henry W. Berounsky, and other family members.

She was born on April 9, 1920, in Manchester, to John and Josephine (Piaseczny) Pinska. She attended public schools and graduated from Manchester Central High School, Class of 1938. She received a bachelor of science degree in business from the University of New Hampshire in 1942.

She joined her husband at Ben's Auto Body Inc., now at 11 Mirona Road in Portsmouth, as the comptroller and vice president until retirement in 1994.

In addition to raising four children and working, Sophie was treasurer for Mirona Realty and active in the Portsmouth College Women's Club, where she was past president and treasurer; Portsmouth Economic Commission, serving as chairman; Portsmouth Shipyard Association; Bauneg Beg Lake Association; American Citizens of Polish Descent; was a lifetime member of the President's Council of the University of New Hampshire; was on the board of the New Hampshire Charitable Trust; and was active in documenting the history of the stained glass windows of the Immaculate Conception Church.

When she lived in Manchester, she was a member of the Pulaski Club and reigned as queen for a year. She received many awards, including with her husband the Chamber of Commerce Citizens of the Year Award in 1990, and United Way's Richard S. Lockhart Award; and was a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International.

In her spare time, she enjoyed being with her family; cooking, especially Polish delicacies; bowling league; antique collecting; sewing; traveling, particularly to foreign countries; and was a violinist for the Seacoast Symphony.

In addition to her husband, survivors include her children, Michael H. Berounsky Sr. and his wife, Robin, of Newington; Nancy B. Anderson and her husband, John Anderson, of Gambier, Ohio; and Veronica M. Berounsky and her husband, Richard Lee, of Narragansett, R.I.; her grandchildren, Michael H. Berounsky Jr. and his wife, Brenda, of Rollinsford; Jason T. Berounsky and his wife, Dawn, of Greenland; Kathryn M. Berounsky of Newington; Nathan J. Anderson of Gettysburg, Pa.; and Elizabeth M.J. Lee and Benjamin B. Lee of Narragansett; her great-grandchildren, Matthew and Kayleigh Berounsky of Rollinsford, and Tayler and Paige Berounsky of Greenland; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two sisters.

BEROUNSKY - Sophie P. Berounsky, 81, of 16 Brackett Road, Portsmouth, died April 27, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Visiting hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St. Burial in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth. Family flowers only, please. Memorials may be made to either the Immaculate Conception Church, 98 Summer St., Portsmouth, NH 03801; or to the Second Wind Pulmonary Program, c/o Portsmouth Regional Hospital, 330 Borthwick Ave., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Ruth C. Small

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Ruth C. Small, 73, of 928 South St., were held on Friday from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, with graveside services at Highland Cemetery in Kittery, Maine. The Rev. Dr. Arthur L. Hilson, pastor of New Hope Baptist Church in Portsmouth, officiated.

William B. Leach

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for William B. Leach, 80, husband of A. Louise (Dore) Leach of 8 Winchester St., were held on Saturday from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, with services at St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth. The Rev. Father Timothy Rich, rector, officiated. Gail Avery, lay Eucharistic minister, assisted. A poem was read by son Ronald B. Leach and daughter-in-law Pamela G. Leach. Family reflections were given by children William O. Leach, Susan Wysocki and Sharon Zuckerman. David Wold was organist and Mark McNally was soloist.

Masonic services by St. John's Lodge No. 1 F&AM were held at the church, including Wor. Master William Sawyer; Chaplain A. Kenneth Day, p.m.; Donald L. Stevens, p.m.; Wesley J. Rowe, p.m.; and Calvin Wilder, p.m.

In attendance were members if the church and representatives from Senior Friends at Portsmouth Hospital; AARP; Prime Time; Scottish Rite Bodies of the Valley of Portsmouth and Dover; N.H. Consistory 32 degree of Nashua; Bektash Shrine; Frank E. Booma Post No. 6; and American Legion.

Burial will be in the Lovell Lake Cemetery, Sanbornville, N.H., at the convenience of the family.

John P.H. Chandler Jr.

CONCORD - Former state Senator John Parker Hale Chandler Jr., 89, died April 27, 2001, at Pleasantview Nursing Home in Concord. Born Aug. 6, 1911, in Roxbury, Mass., he was the son of the late John P.H. Chandler Sr. and Madeline (Vogel) Chandler. He was also predeceased by his wife, Margaret (Bowl) Chandler, who died in 1994, and a son, John P.H. Chandler III, who died in 1995.

He is survived by one son, Thomas E. Chandler of Warner, N.H.; two daughters, Rose C. Daniels of East Concord and Elizabeth C. Collins of Dover; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson, Christian Chandler of Boscawen.

CHANDLER - John Parker Hale Chandler Jr., 89, died April 27, 2001. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at the Harris Masonic Lodge #91 in Warner, followed at 7 p.m. by a Masonic service in the Lodge. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 3, 2001, at the United Church of Warner. The interim pastor, David Travis, will officiate. Burial will follow in New Waterloo Cemetery in Warner. The Holt-Woodbury Funeral Home & Cremation Service is in charge of arrangements. Donations may be made in his name to the Warner Historical Society, P.O. Box 189, Warner, NH 03278, or to the United Church of Warner, P.O. Box 203, Warner, NH 03278.

Helen L. Hanson

KITTERY, Maine - Helen L. Hanson, 82, formerly of Haley Road, died Saturday, April 28, 2001, at Homestead Nursing Home in Kittery following a brief illness. She was born in Portland, a daughter of George and Evelyn White. She graduated from Deering High School in Portland. She worked at Valle's, formerly in Kittery, and for many years at the Weathervane in Kittery. She was a member of Piscataqua Chapter #90, Order of Eastern Star in Kittery, and was a member of the Lame Duck Bowling League for many years. She enjoyed gardening.

She was predeceased by her husband, Howard W. Hanson, in 1994. She is survived by two sons, Warren L. Hanson of Exeter and Allen D. Hanson of Medway, Maine; one daughter, Karla L. Snyder of Vancouver, Wash.; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

HANSON - Helen L. Hanson, 82, of Kittery, Maine, died Saturday, April 28, 2001. There will be no visiting hours. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine. A private committal service will be held at Moss Side Cemetery in Cumberland. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of one's choice.
