Harlan E. Carter Sr.

NORTH HAMPTON - Services for Harlan E. Carter Sr., 74, of Atlantic Avenue, were held Friday in the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. The Rev. Carroll C. Moore, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Hampton, officiated. Nelson K. Ward was organist.

Private interment was in the Center Cemetery with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Moore.

Earl Hugh Griswold Jr.

YORK, Maine - Earl Hugh Griswold Jr., 81, of Old Post Road, died Friday, June 1, 2001, at his residence.

Born May 9, 1920, in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was the son of Earl H. and Lulu Belle (Philbrick) Griswold.

He received a degree in graphic arts and printing from Boston University. During World War II, he worked for the Lane Construction Co. building Air Force bases at Pease, N.H., and Sanford, Bangor, Limestone and Brunswick, Maine.

From the age of 13 until 1933, he worked as a printer for the York Press. For four years, he worked at the Bay State Bindery in Boston, Mass., until 1959. He worked in No. 03 Power Plant at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and No. 02 in transportation for 16 years, retiring in 1982. He had also worked for the Earl Smith Trucking Co. in York.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in York. He was a life member of the American Motorcycle Association, the Golden Eagles Club of Westbrook and a member of St. Aspinquid Masonic Lodge in York. He and his wife, Maria, traveled throughout Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont on his motorcycle.

He was predeceased by his wife, Maria Ardel Griswold, who died Jan. 16, 1999.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Locklin of Wells and Mary Jackson of Cumberland Foreside, Maine; and three grandchildren, Jason and Sarah Locklin and James Jackson V.

GRISWOLD - Earl H. Griswold Jr. of Old Post Road, York, Maine, died June 1, 2001, at his residence. The public is welcome to attend graveside services Monday at 2 p.m. in the First Parish Cemetery, York. There are no visiting hours. Memorial donations may be made to the York Volunteer Ambulance Association, P.O. Box 238, York, ME 03909. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Lorraine F. "Lorrie" Dupuis

PORTSMOUTH - The funeral for Lorraine F. "Lorrie" Dupuis, 79, of Portsmouth, was held Friday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. James Church. The Rev. Agapit Jean, pastor, was the celebrant, assisted by Deacon Philip Enrico. Jean Goss was organist and Julia Lanter was soloist. Altar servers were Richard Ward, Theresa Hickey, Jane Millette and Janet Green. Words of remembrance were offered by Gerard J. Dupuis and Emery J. Dupuis, sons of Mrs. Dupuis.

Burial followed in Calvary Cemetery, with the Rite of Committal conducted by Father Jean and Deacon Enrico. Pallbearers were David Holding, Patrick Holding, Larry Connors, Phil Dupuis, Kevin Dupuis, Michael Dupuis, John Dupuis and Paul Dupuis.

Irving Whitney

KITTERY, Maine - Funeral services for Irving Whitney, 79, of Kittery, who died May 24, 2001, at York Hospital, were held Thursday morning at St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Kittery. The Rev. Patricia Bristow-Carrico, pastor, conducted the services. Organist was Susan Utoh. Delegations from the South Berwick Rod and Gun Club, the Boy Scouts of America, the Stage Neck Inn of York, the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and the York Rainbow Assembly were present at the funeral service. A nephew, Douglas Whitney, recited a poem and reflected on Mr. Whitney's life.

A graveside committal service and burial followed in Oceanview Cemetery in Wells. Bearers were George Whitney, Ronald Whitney, Leonard Whitney, Stanley Whitney, Douglas Whitney, Ralph Edmunds and Steven Rux.

A time of refreshments and sharing followed the services at St. Mark's fellowship hall. Arrangements under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home of Kittery.

David Rowe Jefferson Sr.

HAMPTON FALLS - David Rowe Jefferson Sr., 69, of 4 Oak Drive, died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at the Exeter Hospital after a period of failing health.

Mr. Jefferson was born in Hillsdale, Mich., June 18, 1931, the son of the late Howard Bonar and Genevieve (Rowe) Jefferson. He was raised in Hamilton, N.Y., and Worcester, Mass., and had resided in Hampton Falls for 32 years.

Mr. Jefferson was a graduate of Deerfield Academy, Class of 1949, and Harvard University, Class of 1953, where he was an active member of the Iroquois and the Hasty Pudding clubs. He completed his masters of divinity at Yale University in 1956, having spent a year abroad at New College University of Edinburgh, Scotland.

His early career included serving as chaplain of the Colleges of Queens and Nassau counties in New York, and as dean of admissions at C.W. Post College, Dickinson College, and Bradford College. He was headmaster at Worcester Academy. He then worked in the financial services arena, where he became a chartered financial planner and a certified life underwriter.

He was most recently employed as senior development officer for the Joslin Diabetes Center and McLean Hospital, where he was responsible for raising millions of dollars for medical research. During his retirement, he was the director of development for Seacoast HealthNet, as well as serving on the board of directors.

A 32nd Degree Mason, Mr. Jefferson was a member and past master of St. James Lodge No. 102 F.&A.M. of Hampton, and a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Portsmouth and Dover, the New Hampshire Consistory Valley of Nashua, and the Bektash Temple Shrine of Concord. He was also a member of the Harvard Faculty Club, the Harvard Club of Boston, and St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth.

Family members include his wife of 44 years, Anne Sawyer (Morgan) Jefferson of Hampton Falls; two sons, David Rowe Jefferson Jr. and his wife Lucinda of South Berwick, Maine, and Cmdr. Peter H. Jefferson (USN) and his wife Karen of Virginia Beach, Va.; four grandchildren, Rebecca, Timothy, Megan and Matthew; and a brother William H. Jefferson of Canastota, N.Y.

JEFFERSON - David Rowe Jefferson Sr., of 4 Oak Drive, Hampton Falls, died May 31, 2001. Services will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, Portsmouth, on Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. In accordance with Mr. Jefferson's wishes, the family requests that there be no visiting hours and that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833. Assistance with the arrangements was by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

George J. Newick

NEWINGTON - George J. Newick, 88, the widower of Nancy (Hughes) Newick, of 34 Fabian Point Road, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born in Newington, Oct. 1, 1912, he was the son of the late William D. and Mary A. Newick. He attended Newington schools and was a graduate of Portsmouth High School.

He served in the United States Army Air Corps as a radio technician during World War II in Africa and Italy.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a draftsman at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

He enjoyed photography, boating and fishing. In the 1930s, he became a ham radio operator with the call sign of "W1KTV."

Survivors include a son, John W. Newick and his wife, Jill M., of Stratham; and three grandchildren, Brandon D. Gove of Milton, N.H., Matthew W. Newick of Milton, and Abigail E. Phaneuf of Stratham.

NEWICK - George J. Newick, 88, of 34 Fabian Point Road, Newington, died May 30, 2001. Graveside services will be held at the Newington Cemetery, Monday at 3 p.m. Friends invited. No visiting hours. Donations in his memory may be made to Portsmouth Regional Home Health and Hospice, 95 Albany St., Unit 11, Portsmouth, NH 03801. Arrangements by the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.

Frederick Hart Sr.

YORK, Maine - A private family graveside committal service and burial for Frederick Hart Sr., 92, who passed away May 27, 2001, at York Hospital, took place Friday afternoon in First Parish Cemetery, York. The Rev. Rich Knight, pastor of the First Parish Congregational Church of York, recited committal prayers. He was assisted by the associate pastor, the Rev. Linda Hirst. The family gathered at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home for private visitation and family prayers prior to proceeding to the cemetery. A public memorial service for Mr. Hart followed at the church.

Pallbearers were Clarence Brunet, Ed Carbone, George Wildey, Frederick Hart II, Frederick Hart III, and Mathew Hart.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper funeral home of Kittery.

Tim Heywood Stanley

EXETER - Tim Heywood Stanley, 48, of Oak Street, died suddenly Friday, June 1, 2001, at Exeter Hospital.

Born May 6, 1953, in Exeter, he was the son of R. Heywood and Lucille (Varrill) Stanley.

He was a graduate of Exeter High School and New Mexico State University where he received his degree in business.

He then spent one year in the Vista Program and three years in the Peace Corps serving in South Africa.

He formerly was employed several years with Phillips Exeter Academy. For many years he served as commissioner for Exeter Housing, and thought highly of the people who lived there.

He was a well-known toy collector and enjoyed his hobby and all the people he met.

He is survived by his parents of Exeter; two brothers and their wives, Jon and Gale Stanley of Candia, N.H., and David and Tina Stanley of Omaha, Neb.; one sister, Dena Stanley of Exeter; two nieces and two nephews.

STANLEY - Tim Heywood Stanley, 48, of Oak Street, Exeter, died June 1, 2001. Calling hours will be held on Monday, June 4, from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. from the Brewitt Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robert Thompson of Phillips Exeter Academy. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Exeter Housing, 277 Water St., Exeter, NH 03833, for their annual Christmas party.

FISHMAN - Samuel L. Fishman of Newton, Mass., died on Wednesday, May 30, 2001. Loving father of Gayle R. Sanders and her husband Jack of Stratham, N.H., and Alan R. Fishman and his wife Phyllis of Littleton, Colo.; adored grandfather of Melissa Jill Fishman, Jessica Lyn Fishman, Rachel Carson Winokur and Dr. Rebecca Chloe Winokur Brown; dear brother of Beatrice Frank and her husband Lou of Needham, Mass., and Max Fishman of Holliston, Mass.; former husband of Thelma (Epstein) Fishman of Florida. Services at the Levine Chapels, 470 Harvard St., Brookline, Mass., on Sunday at 9 a.m. Shiva will be private. Remembrances may be made to Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 4 Binney St., Boston, MA 02115; or Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 220 N. Main St., Suite 202, Natick, MA 01760.

Charlotte W. (Miller) Williams

RYE - Charlotte W. (Miller) Williams, 89, widow of Chester E. Williams, of 1240 Ocean Blvd., died on Friday, June 1, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

She was born in Concord on Dec. 27, 1911, the daughter of the late Joseph J. and Anne E. (Lackey) Miller.

She graduated from Lowell High School in Lowell, Mass., as class salutatorian. She was also a graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Lowell.

Prior to her retirement, she was a teacher for the Portsmouth school system and had also been employed by the York, Maine, school system.

She was a member of the Middle Street Baptist Church in Portsmouth; past regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Ranger Chapter; member of the Seacoast Retired Teachers Association; and member of the Huguenot Society.

She loved to oil paint, spend time with her children and grandchildren and her pets.

Survivors include three daughters, Celia Englander, MD, of Rye, Sherry Williams of Portsmouth, and Cynthia Oliver and her husband James H. of Portsmouth; six grandchildren, Joseph M. Dodge, MD, of San Diego, Calif., Jeffers Dodge of Rye, Chester Englander of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, Chip William Englander of Ann Arbor, Mich., Sarah E. Oliver of Portsmouth, and Charlotte C. Oliver of Portsmouth; a sister, Shirley M. Tippens of Millinocket, Maine; and many nieces and nephews.

WILLIAMS - Charlotte W. (Miller) Williams, 89, of 1240 Ocean Blvd., Rye, died June 1, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the chapel. Flowers will be accepted, or donations may be made in her memory to NHSPCA, P.O. Box 196, Stratham, NH 03885-0196.

Barbara C. Herrera

FARMINGTON - Barbara C. Herrera, 39, of 18 Orchard Circle, died Thursday, May 17, 2001 in East Wendover, Utah.

Born in Portsmouth, July 9, 1961, she was the daughter of Frances A. (LaValley) Burns and John D. Hughes.

She was a 1979 graduate of Thornton High School in Thornton, Colo., and a graduate of Colorado College of Medical and Dental Assistants.

Survivors include her mother, Frances A. Burns, and stepfather, William J. Burns, of Alton, N.H.; her father, John D. Hughes of Loveland, Colo.; four children, Jesse Herrera of Boise, Idaho, Christopher Herrera of Farmington, N.H., Jenny Herrera of Ft. Collins, Colo., and Alisha Hughes of Spring Creek, Nev.; her grandfather, Albert B. LaValley and her stepgrandmother, Lorraine LaValley, of Portsmouth; two sisters, Brenda Henderson of Rochester, and Frances Jean Crawford of Spring Creek, Nev.; a brother, John D. Hughes of Aurora, Colo.; aunts and uncles; and several nieces and nephews.

HERRERA - Barbara C. Herrera, 39, of 18 Orchard Circle, Farmington, N.H., died May 17, 2001. A memorial service will be held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, on Friday, June 8, at 10 a.m. Friends invited. No visiting hours.

Flora B. Sherburne

BARRINGTON - Flora B. Sherburne, 99, of 386 Route 9, died Friday, June 1, 2001, at the Rochester Manor following a period of failing health.

Born Oct. 29, 1901, in Barrington, she was the daughter of the late William H. and Sarah (Reed) Brown. She was a homemaker. She loved her family dearly and enjoyed helping others whenever she could; she also loved horses, flowers and cooking. She was the first recipient of the Barrington Cane, which she received for being the oldest resident of the town.

Members of her family include her son, Joel Sherburne of Barrington; four nieces; and two nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, J Ralph Sherburne, in 1960; as well as a sister, Amy Arlin, and three brothers, Warren, Clement and Guy Brown.

SHERBURNE - Flora B. Sherburne, 99, of 386 Route 9, Barrington, N.H., died June 1, 2001. Family and friends may call on Monday, June 4, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the R.M. Edgerly and Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Wayne Nelson officiating. Burial will take place at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Barrington. Memorial donations may be made in her name to the Barrington EMS, P.O. Box 174, Barrington, NH 03825.

Russell C. Allen

YORK HARBOR, Maine - Russell C. Allen, 79, of 7 Norwood Circle, formerly a 35-year resident of Rye Beach and Prescott, Ariz., died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at the Partridge House in Hampton, N.H.

Born July 26, 1921, in Lexington, Mass., he was the son of the late Russell B. and Zylpha (Churchill) Allen.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard, serving during World War II. He worked for the Macallen Co. in Newmarket, where he became known as "Mr. Mica," and retired in 1986 from Macallen Mica Division of the Essex Group. In 1995, he was awarded the Hall of Fame Award at the National Electrical Insulation Conference.

A lifelong golfer, he was often referred to as "Arnie." He was past president of the McDonough Caddy Scholarship Foundation. On the ski slopes of Saddleback Mountain, he was easy to pick out by his trademark knickers.

He was the husband of the late Beatrice (Ruderman) Allen.

Family members include his six children, Laurie A. Carlock of San Diego, Calif., Andrea A. Krofina of Trumbull, Conn., Christopher M. Allen of North Woodstock, N.H., Eric Allen of North Hampton, N.H., Mark Allen of Rye, N.H., and Peter W. Allen of North Hampton, N.H.; six grandchildren; and one sister, Faith Perry of Barre, Vt.

He was predeceased by his brother, Matthew Allen.

ALLEN - Russell C. Allen, 79, of 7 Norwood Circle, York Harbor, Maine, formerly of Rye Beach, died May 31, 2001. A memorial service will be held at the First Parish Church, York, on Thursday, June 7, at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Burial will be private.
