Neilie A. Heffernan Casey

WELLESLEY, Mass. - Neilie Anne Heffernan Casey, 32, of Wellesley, a planning manager of the TJX Cos., died on Sept. 11, 2001, in the crash of American Airlines Flight 11 in New York, N.Y.

Born in Worcester, she was the daughter of Anne Brosnan Heffernan and the late Neil T. Heffernan Jr. She moved to Boca Raton, Fla., in 1979 and graduated from Pope John Paul II High School in 1986. She returned to Worcester to attend the College of the Holy Cross, where she received her bachelor of arts degree in 1990, and where she met her husband Michael. They married on Sept. 21, 1996, and have a 7-month old daughter, Riley Eileen.

After college, she worked for The Gap in San Francisco, and moved to Boston in 1993 to work for Chadwick's of Boston, a women's clothing company. She joined the corporate office of TJX Cos. in July 2001. She was pursuing an MBA through the evening program at Babson College.

In addition to her husband Michael and daughter Riley, she leaves her mother, Anne; grandmother, Dr. M. E. Fletcher; sisters, Eileen and Lynsey; brother, Neil; and nieces and nephews.

CASEY - Neilie Anne Heffernan Casey, 32, of Wellesley, Mass., died Sept. 11 in the crash of American Airlines Flight 11 in New York City, N.Y. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church in Worcester, Mass., at 353 Grove St. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Trust for Riley Eileen Casey, c/o David Boschetto, Ropes and Gray, One International Place, Boston, MA 02110.

Marion P. Thayer

WELLS, Maine - Marion Prosser Thayer, 61, of 327 Quarry Road, died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001, at her home after a long battle with cancer.

Born in Myersdale, Pa., on April 10, 1940, she was the daughter of Addington H. and Pearl M. (Ropickey) Prosser. She was a graduate of the Old Orchard High School and the Portland Business School.

After moving to Kittery in 1972, she became involved in school activities. She was also the manager of a retail store for many years.

She was the wife of David A. Thayer of Wells for 33 years.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, Rick G. Thayer of Wells and Russell A. Thayer of Kennebunk; stepdaughter, Lori A. Collin of Arundel; stepson, David J. Thayer of Waterboro; sister, Barbara Mileski of Portland; brother, Russell Prosser of Old Orchard Beach; several grandchildren; one great-grandchild; uncle, Stephen "Skeets" Ropickey of Pennsylvania; a niece and five nephews.

THAYER - Marion Prosser Thayer, of Wells, Maine, died Sept. 20, 2001. There are no visiting hours. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Bible Speaks Church, 224 Main St., South Berwick, Maine, with Pastor Juan Leura officiating, assisted by the Rev. Bruce Brown. James A. Daniels

DOVER - James A. Daniels, 71, of 5 Revolution Drive, formerly of Rye, died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001, at his home.

He was born Oct. 6, 1929, in Kinta, Okla., son of the late James A. and Annie L. (McAdoo) Daniels.

He was a Korean War and Vietnam veteran, serving with the U.S. Air Force for 21 years, retiring in 1968. After retiring from the military, he was employed as a chef and manager at Ray's Seafood in Rye for 31 years.

He lived for many years in Rye and had resided in Dover for the past three months.

He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, and gave and received so much joy from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed fishing and was very knowledgeable about all sports and sports figures. He was a member of the Frank E. Booma American Legion Post No. 6 of Portsmouth and the American Association of Retired Persons.

He was the husband of Evelyn G. (Howe) Daniels of Dover for 44 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Mark S. Daniels and wife, Laurie, of Arundel, Maine; two daughters, Bonnie Frost and her husband, George, of Dover, and Mary Ann Downing and her husband, Dru, of Somersworth; six grandchildren, Buck J. Frost and wife Suzy, Kristine Righini and husband Keith, Mark J. Daniels, David Donnell, Billy Donnell and Amanda Donnell; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Leo Daniels and his wife, Jean, of Iowa, and Lonzo Daniels and his wife, Cathy, of Iowa; two sisters, Louise Randall of Oklahoma and Geraldine Visser and her husband, Richard, of Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

DANIELS - James A. Daniels of 5 Revolution Drive, Dover, formerly of Rye, died Sept. 20, 2001. Services will be held at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, Monday at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. Burial will be in Center Cemetery, North Hampton. Family flowers only. If desired, donations may be made to the Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Richard H. Grant

PORTSMOUTH - Largely attended memorial services for Richard H. Grant, 71, of Portsmouth, were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel on Wednesday. Father Angelo Pappas, presbyter of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Portsmouth, officiated. A reading was given by Shannon Aldrich. Words of remembrance were given by Dr. Mort Schmidt, Clifford Taylor, Dick Seedner and Linda Grant-Balcomb.

In attendance were representatives from the Portsmouth Rotary, Service Federal Credit Union, and the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce.

Mitchell M. Krasinkewicz

NORTH HAMPTON - The funeral for Mitchell M. Krasinkewicz, 87, of 27 Cedar Road, who died Sept. 12, 2001, was held Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. The Rev. Michael J. Griffin, senior priest at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton, officiated.

Burial followed in the Center Cemetery, with the committal service conducted by Father Griffin.

The United States flag was presented to his son, Paul F. Krasinkewicz.

Laiti M. McIntyre

YORK, Maine - Laiti Mary McIntyre, 95, died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, at Harbor Home in York.

Born Feb. 3, 1906, in Westerly, R.I., she was the daughter of Thomas E. and Mary (Jussila) Thompson.

She attended schools, including a one room schoolhouse, in Rhode Island and in Leominster, Mass.

After graduating from Leominster Senior High in 1924, she worked as a telephone operator for New England Telephone and Telegraph until her marriage. She was the wife for 73 years of Alvin M. McIntyre, who died May 1, 2000.

A homemaker who loved her family and enjoyed artistic hobbies of painting, crafts and needlework, she was also an avid reader even when poor eyesight limited her reading to large print.

In addition to Rhode Island and Massachusetts, she lived in New Jersey for two years and in Dunedin, Fla., for 12 years.

She lived in the Seacoast area - Portsmouth, N.H., and Kittery Point - since 1976.

As a member of the First Baptist Church in Leominster, and while attending the Middle Street Baptist Church in Portsmouth, she was active in several church groups. She was also a member of the Leominster Fortnightly Club, the Hospital Guild, the Kittery Historical Society and Friends of Rice Public Library.

Survivors include two sons, Richard T. McIntyre and his wife, Carolyn, of Raleigh, N.C., and Bruce M. McIntyre and his wife, Sally, of West Newton, Mass.; a daughter, Jean Arris of Kittery Point; two sisters, Ina Stewart and Helen Belliveau, both of Leominster, Mass.; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

McINTYRE - Laiti Mary McIntyre, 95, of York, Maine, died Sept. 19, 2001. There will be no calling hours. Family and friends are invited to a memorial service at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, Rogers Road, in Kittery, at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 25. A private graveside service at Evergreen Cemetery in Leominster, Mass., will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, if desired, donations may be made to the Rice Public Library, Wentworth Street, Kittery, ME 03904; or to a charity of your choice.

Gertrude R. Richardson

HAMPTON - The service for Gertrude R. Richardson, 97, of Burgundy Drive, who died Sept. 10, 2001, was held Saturday, Sept. 15, from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. Services were conducted at the First Congregational Church. The Rev. Deborah Knowlton, pastor, officiated. David Morochnick was organist. Susan Finch, Carol and Bill Bjorkman and Joan Mackle offered words of remembrance.

Private interment was in the Oakdale Cemetery, Middleton, Mass., with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Knowlton.

Dorothy D. Cheney

HAMPTON - The service for Dorothy D. Cheney, 91, formerly of Hampton, who died Sept. 10, 2001, was held Tuesday, Sept. 18, at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. The Rev. John A. Solie, pastor of the Rye Congregational Church, officiated. Jean Goss was organist and Pamela Sheerin was soloist.

Burial followed in the Central Cemetery, Rye, with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Solie. Bagpiper, Gordon Wilson, offered Scottish laments.

Ruth B. Sigg

BETHESDA, Md. - Ruth Beane Sigg, 48, of Bethesda, died Sept. 13, 2001, at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda. She was the daughter of former Portsmouth residents Shirley (Sanderson) and Dick Beane, and granddaughter of the late Doris and Phil Sanderson.

She graduated from Potsdam (New York) Central School in 1971 and the state University of New York at Farmingdale, graduating with a degree in dental hygiene in 1973.

She is survived by her husband, Capt. Daniel R. Sigg, U.S.N.; four children, Christopher, Jennifer, Carolyn and Katie; her parents and two brothers, Capt. Richard A. Beane, USNMC and Roger A. Beane.

If desired, memorial gifts may be made to Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, c/o Dr. Kurt Isselbacker, Navy Yard, Charlestown, MA 02129.

KALGREN - Ashley Kalgren, daughter of Jason and Dawn (Palino) Kalgren of Fremont, N.H., was still born 15 weeks early on Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at Exeter Hospital. In addition to her parents, Ashley leaves behind her sister Felicia; grandparents in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts; three great-grandmothers and two great-grandfathers; and a large extended family. Services will be private.

Paul E. Bowden

DOVER - Paul Edward Bowden, 69, of Dover and Lake Pennamaquan, Charlotte, Maine, died at home late Friday night, Sept. 21, 2001, surrounded by his family, after a long battle with cancer.

Originally from Eastport, Maine, Paul raised his family in York, Maine, and retired from the Design Division at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard after 30 years of service. He was also an honorably discharged naval veteran of the Korean War.

A lifelong woodworking enthusiast, he built his family four homes over the years, and in recent years developed a reputation as a noted wildlife woodcarver.

The youngest son of the late Merrill and Frances Bowden, he is survived by his wife, Mary; four children, Michael, Sue Ellen, Maria, and Stephen; four grandchildren, Emma, Sadie, Alexander, and Dylan; a brother, Bruce, and sister, Sharon; and countless friends. An older brother, Robert, passed away in 1987.

In addition to his talent as a woodcarver and craftsman, his family will remember him as an honest and devoted husband, a father who certainly qualified for the title of "Renaissance man," and - for his grandchildren - a "Papa" beyond compare. His friends and colleagues will undoubtedly remember him best for his Downeast humor and willingness to always lend a hand.

BOWDEN - Paul E. Bowden, 69, of Dover, and Lake Pennamaquan, Charlotte, Maine, died Sept. 21, 2001. In lieu of flowers, Mr. Bowden requested that donations be made in his name to Seacoast Hospice, 749-4300. A memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at 3 p.m., to be followed immediately by a reception at his family's home at 94 Bellamy Woods in Dover.

Richard D. Saunders

TOPSFIELD, Mass. - Richard D. Saunders, 49, formerly of Farmington, N.H., died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001.

He was a son of Margaret T. (Morris) Saunders of Winchester, Mass.; the father of R. Michael Saunders, of Haverhill, Mass.; a brother of Cynthia Mastroianni and her husband, Richard, of North Reading, Mass., Robert Saunders of Londonderry, N.H., James and his wife, Valerie, of Winchester, and the late Jacquelyn Strickland. He also leaves his lifelong friend and guardian, Art Nicholson of Portsmouth, N.H.; several nieces and nephews; and one grandniece.

SAUNDERS - Richard D. Saunders, 49, of Topsfield, Mass., formerly of Farmington, N.H., died Sept. 16, 2001. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a memorial service at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001, at the Unitarian-Universalist Church, 292 State St., Portsmouth, and a memorial Mass at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at St. Theresa's Church, 63 Winter St., North Reading, Mass. Memorial donations may be made to Serenity Supportive Housing, Attn: Lucinda Nolet, 9 Nike Village, Topsfield, MA 01983. Arrangements are by Solimine Landergan & Rhodes Funeral Home, 426 Broadway, (Route 129), Lynn, Mass.

Carlton H. Broadbent

YORK, Maine - Carlton H. Broadbent, 85, died unexpectedly Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born in Springvale, Maine, on May 27, 1916, he was a son of Ernest and Ellen Hadfield Broadbent and attended Sanford schools. He married Jerrine Vennell on Sept. 1, 1939.

He was a World War II veteran, serving under General Patton. During the Battle of the Bulge, he was trapped behind enemy lines and was rescued three weeks later.

He worked as a welder for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Shop No. 26. He was also a chief steward there, retiring on April 2, 1976.

He was a 55-year member of the American Legion and a longtime member of the Pleasant Street Free Baptist Church, Springvale.

He enjoyed gardening, bowling, hunting and trapping, and he had such a strong sense of family.

He is survived by his sons, Richard Broadbent and his wife, Barbara, of York, and Stephen Broadbent and his wife, Konika, of Wilton, Maine; grandchildren Sarah Gerbing, Allison Beahm, William Broadbent, Michael Broadbent and Amy Broadbent; and five great-grandchildren. He was affectionately known as "Old Pappa."

Besides his wife, who died on July 18, 1988, he was predeceased by a brother, Raymond Broadbent, and sisters Mary Maceleny and Ruby Wilson.

BROADBENT - Carlton H. Broadbent, 85, of York, Maine, died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001. Relatives and friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001, at the Heald Funeral Home, 580 Main St., Springvale, Maine, where a funeral will follow at 10 a.m. Family flowers only. If desired, donations may be made in his memory to the American Red Cross, 889 Main St., Sanford, ME 04073, or to the Cape Neddick Baptist Church, River Road, Cape Neddick, ME 03909.

Josephine Chamberland

HAMPTON - The funeral for Josephine "Joyce" Chamberland, 70, of 240 High Street, was held Saturday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. The Rev. Michael J. Griffin, senior priest, was the celebrant. Patricia Mackensen was the soloist, and Nelson K. Ward was the organist. Altar servers were members of the Holy Name Society. The readings were offered by Sister Doris Ouellette and Sister Theresa Malouin. Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton, with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Griffin. Pallbearers were John Marinos, Marke Cote, Marc Chamberland and Robert Kenney.

Edward E.P. Pierce

BANGOR, Maine - Edward E.P. Pierce, 56, died accidentally on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, at his home.

Born Nov. 8, 1944, in Milo, Maine, he was a son of David P. and Thelma (Snow) Pierce.

He graduated from Bates College in 1966 and attended graduate school at Vanderbilt University. He was a Vietnam veteran, serving in the United States Army. He taught social studies at Thornton Academy in Saco, Maine, and was later employed at R. Leon Williams Lumber Co. in Clifton, Maine. He loved to read good literature, and he enjoyed being in the Maine woods and identifying its flora and fauna. He loved to fish for white perch at Ebeemee Lake and for trout in the brooks nearby.

He is survived by his mother, Thelma, of Bangor; his stepmother, Mary Jane, of Holden, Maine; his brother, David, and his wife Pamella of Brewer, Maine; a niece, Kimberley, of Albany, Calif.; a nephew, Brian, of Gray, Maine; and several cousins.

PIERCE - Edward E. P. Pierce, 56, of Bangor, Maine, died Sept. 22, 2001. A service of remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at Brookings-Smith Funeral Home, 133 Center St., Bangor, with the Rev. Dr. Randall C. Chretien, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, Bangor, officiating. Interment will be in Atkinson Corner Cemetery, Atkinson, Maine.

Marie M. Monagle

DOVER - Marie Margaret Monagle, 73, of 18 Farmington Drive, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, at her sister's home in Barrington.

Born in Somerville, Mass., on Aug. 16, 1928, she was a daughter of William J. and Elizabeth (McCarthy) Monagle. She was a graduate of St. Elizabeth's School of Nursing. She lived in Portsmouth for most of her live before moving recently to Dover. She served in the U.S. Navy as a nurse. She was also employed at the Portsmouth Hospital as an operating room nurse.

She is survived by one brother, Paul, and his wife, Elizabeth, Monagle of Sandwich, Mass.; one sister, Elizabeth, and her husband, Joseph, Belmont of Barrington; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, William and Robert Monagle.

MONAGLE - Marie Margaret Monagle, 73, of 18 Farmington Drive, Dover, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on Wednesday at the Immaculate Conception Church. Visiting hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wentworth-Douglass Hospice, 113 New Rochester Road, Suite #4, Dover, NH 03820.
