Lloyd W. Fiske

HAMPTON - Memorial services for Captain Lloyd W. Fiske were held Jan. 5, 2002, conducted by the Rev. Carrol Moore at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home. Co-workers and friends warmly remembered him, and during the committal service a restored DC-3 flew over the cemetery, dipping its port wing in tribute to the former pilot. During the flyover Steven Driscoll played "Yellow Bird" and "The High and Mighty" on the clarinet.

He is survived by his wife, Marguerite B. Fiske; his daughter, Sherril, and her husband, Steven, of Hampton; two sons, Dana, and his wife, Nancy, of Brentwood, and Eric and his wife, Nancy, of Bow; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one half brother, Edwin Cleveland, of Las Vegas, Nev. He was predeceased by one son, Peter Fiske, and two half sisters, Velma Richardson and Shirley Goss.

His father died in the Spanish flu epidemic of 1918. He then lived for a while with his grandfather, who was a drayman, and learned the business of handling workhorses and heavy-duty hauling equipment. Summers were spent with his uncle Bob Ditty, who ran a dairy farm, learning all the ins and outs of the milk business - mucking out stalls, feeding, watering, operating milking machines, bottling and running the milk route at 10 years old, when his feet would hardly reach the pedals on the old Model T Ford milk truck.

He died Dec. 2, 2001, in Zephyrhills, where he lived with his wife of 62 years, Marguerite (Bean) Fiske. He first worked as a station manager for Northeast Airlines in Montpelier, Vt. His friend Howard Dutton taught him to fly in the '30s, and he worked as a barnstormer, giving daring performances along the Eastern Seaboard. In the late '30s he married and went to work again for Northeast Airlines as an instructor. When World War II broke out, he served with the Northeast Wing, transporting supplies to Scotland through Ammassalik (Tasiilaq), Greenland, and Reykjavik, Iceland, in a C-47 aircraft. After the war he returned to flying for Northeast Airlines, first in the DC-3 and then the DC-6 with reciprocating engines and the Viscount with turboprops. In the late '50s the jet was being introduced to the airline business, and he flew the Convair 880. Northeast bought new Boeing 727s in 1962 and added Florida service. Their planes repainted yellow and white, the airline adopted the song "Yellow Bird" as its theme. He became chief pilot, and one of his many responsibilities included hiring new pilots for the growing airline. He hired many local young men who became excellent pilots, and many are still flying today. After 10 years in the office, as he liked to call it, he went back on the line. In 1972 Northeast merged with Delta Airlines and he flew routes between San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Los Angeles, Calif., flying DC-10 aircraft. Mandatory retirement came at age 60, so in 1975 he was forced to go. He loved to work on his home, of which he had many - building new and restoring many. He was very active in the Hampton United Methodist Church, serving in many capacities. He was awarded a cross made of pipe and pieces of the church furnace, which he had kept running for years.
