Alice T. Sprague

ST. GEORGE, Utah - Alice Taylor Sprague died Jan. 28, 2002, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was born in Exeter, N.H., on Jan. 21, 1920, to John L. Taylor and Lucy Burlingame Taylor. She graduated from the Robinson Female Seminary in 1938. She married Fred M. Currier in 1939 and they later divorced.

She was a bookkeeper and then a housewife and mother. She was married to Roland Rattee for more than 30 years until his death in October 1979. She taught Sunday School at the Exeter Methodist Church and was also the Methodist Youth Fellowship group leader for many years. She loved her home and family and enjoyed working out in the yard. Anything green that would grow and listening to the birds chirp and sing were among the things she loved.

She married William Sprague in 1985 and they made their home in Exeter. They loved to go on long rides traveling all around the New England states. They were together until her Alzheimer's progressed, and she then went to live with her daughter and her family in Mesquite, Nev.

She is survived by her sister, Amy Taylor Simpson of Plymouth, Mass.; a daughter, Lucille Currier Drown of Mesquite, Nev.; a son, Roland J. Rattee of Weehawken, N.J.; a stepson, Tom Sprague of Boston, Mass.; six grandchildren, Joseph Plumer of Concord, N.H., William Plumer of Merritt Island, Fla., Heidi and Holly Currier of Epping, N.H., John J. Currier of Fremont, N.H., and Terri Drown Scering of Bourbonnais, Ill.; seven great-grandchildren; and four nieces and nephews. Alice was preceded in death by her husband, William P. Sprague; two sons, Fred M. Currier and John B. Currier; and her brother, John L. Taylor Jr., and his two sons, John III and Donald Taylor.

A graveside service will be held at a later date at the family grave site in Exeter Cemetery, Exeter, N.H. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 919 N. Michigan Ave., Suite 1100, Chicago, IL 60611-1676.

Allen V. Smith Jr.

EPPING - Allen V. Smith Jr., 45, of Fisher Drive, Epping, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at the Exeter Hospital.

He was born on Oct. 26, 1956, in Portland, Maine, son of Allen V. Smith Sr. and Edna (Wilbur) Smith. He was raised in Scarborough, Maine. He resided in Stratham from 1982 to 1988 and had resided in Epping since 1988.

Mr. Smith was employed at Northern Utilities for 22 years and was formerly the vice president and president of the United Steel Workers Union of America, Local 12012. He was a member of the Gov. William King Masonic Lodge No. 219 in Scarborough, and was a member of the Harley Owners Group since 1994.

He was the husband of Jill A. (Workman) Smith of Epping for 19 years.

In addition to his wife and parents, of Scarborough, survivors include his sister, Sally Petit of Saco, Maine; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews; two beloved dogs, Trixie and Ginger; and his cat, Tramp.

He was predeceased by an uncle, Bud Smith, who died in Nov. 2001, and by his beloved dog Lady.

SMITH - Allen V. Smith Jr., 45, of Fisher Drive, Epping, died Jan. 28, 2002. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 8 Pleasant St., Epping. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Epping Community Church, located across the street from the funeral home. The Rev. Wayne VanGundy will officiate at the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to a charity of one's choice.

Henry Mohring

KITTERY, Maine - A funeral service for pastor and friend Henry Mohring of Kittery was held on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery. In attendance were many friends from Foxwell Retirement Community in Kittery, members of the church at which he preached, the Nute Ridge Bible Chapel, and many of his former co-workers at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

The Rev. Dick Arnold officiated, with kind words of remembrance and scripture offered by close friend the Rev. Reginald Dunlap, and the Rev. Brad Hensel. Scripture readings, songs and remembrances were also offered by pastors Dave Maleham and Bob Walsh. There were many fond memories spoken by those in attendance.

Several solos were performed by Ken Fernald, and the attendees were led in song by organist Mrs. Alice Walsh, singing many of Hank's favorite hymns. Everyone was invited to return to the activity center at Foxwell for a time of sharing and refreshment.

Henry deWildt

ALFRED, Maine - A funeral service for Mr. Henry deWildt of Camp Road in Alfred, formerly of Eliot, was held on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery. The Rev. Dr. David Avery officiated.

In attendance were members of his family, friends, members of his church, the First Congregational Church in Eliot, and former customers of the deWildt Poultry farm in Eliot.

After the service, all were invited to a time of refreshment and sharing at Macpherson Hall at the First Congregational Church in Eliot.

Thomas H. Flaherty

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine - Thomas H. Flaherty, 74, of Old Fields Road, died Jan. 31, 2002, at his home following a long period of failing health.

He was born in Portland on June 30, 1927, a son of Patrick Henry and Bernadette Marie (Wolfe) Flaherty.

He was retired from the state of Maine, where he had been employed as a state coastal warden. Prior to his work for the state, he was employed as a merchant marine.

After retiring, he worked for Sanders of Nashua and Kittery (now BAE) and as a security guard for the SUBMEPP activity in Portsmouth.

He was a member of the South Berwick Odd Fellows.

A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he was stationed aboard the USS Wasp, an aircraft carrier. He was a plank-holder of the USS Wasp (a distinguishing mark of the first crew to have served on board the ship).

He was a communicant of St. Michael's Church, South Berwick.

He was the widower of Catherine M. (Traynor) Flaherty, who died Dec. 23, 1992.

Members of the family include his sons and their wives, John and Donna Flaherty of Somersworth, and James and Kim Flaherty of Clarksville, Tenn.; a daughter and her husband, Jean and Robert Hillsgrove of South Berwick; a brother, Richard Flaherty of Bay Springs, Miss.; sisters Florence Kvorjak of Rockland, Marie Thompson of Ohio, and Eva Wood of Milford, N.H.; his grandchildren, Jeffrey Hillsgrove, and Michelle, Matthew, Mckayla and David Flaherty; three great-grandchildren; and a very close friend, Jane Tuttle of South Berwick.

His siblings Matthew J. Flaherty and Lillian McCawley predeceased him.

FLAHERTY - Thomas H. Flaherty, 74, of South Berwick, Maine, died Jan. 31, 2002. Relatives and friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at the McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home, 301 Main St., South Berwick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday at St. Michael's Church, Young Street, South Berwick, with the Rev. H.J. Cameron, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will follow in Brooks Memorial Park, Eliot, Maine. The family suggests donations be made in his name to the Rachel Carson N.W.R., 321 Port Road, Wells, ME 04090. Paula O'Brien

ELIOT, Maine - Paula (Pridham) O'Brien died Jan. 29, 2002, at the York Hospital in York after a short battle with cancer.

She was born in Portsmouth, N.H., and raised in New Castle, N.H., the daughter of the late George "Zip" and Ellen (Crockett) Pridham.

She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1952, and attended Keene State College.

After college, she went on to help special-needs children at the Home for Little Wanderers in Jamaica Plains, Mass.

Upon returning to the Seacoast area to raise her family, she worked at the Great Bay Learning Center in Newington, N.H. More recently, and prior to her illness, she was employed with the Seacoast Area Homemakers in Portsmouth, N.H.

She will be remembered for her enjoyment of reading and her compassion to animals.

Survivors included five sons, Joe O'Brien of Greenland, N.H.; Craig O'Brien of Eliot; Sean O'Brien of Seattle, Wash.; Matt O'Brien of Portland; and Mark O'Brien of Dover, N.H.; a daughter, Keri O'Brien Sabalewski and her husband, Glenn, of Exeter, N.H.; her former husband, John O'Brien of South Berwick; three grandchildren, Garrett and Meghan O'Brien of Somersworth, N.H., and Gavin Sabalewski of Exeter, N.H.; and her dog, Dudley.

O'BRIEN - Paula (Pridham) O'Brien, of Eliot, Maine, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad Street, Portsmouth. Friends are invited. There will be no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the N.H. Herbert L. Novell

SUN CITY WEST, Ariz. - Herbert L. Novell, 68, died Jan. 6, 2002, in his home after a brief illness. Born in Exeter, N.H., on July 5, 1933, he was a member and supporter of New Hope Fellowship Church in Sun City West. He had worked for Exeter Hospital for 30 years, where he retired as storeroom manager, and relocated to Arizona in 1993. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing bocce. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He is survived by his beloved wife, Audrey Lois Novell; four children, Herbert G. Novell of East Kingston, N.H., Sheri L. Kaminski of Danville, N.H., Sally A. Novell of Durham, N.H., and Eric L. Novell of Livermore, Calif.; seven grandchildren; one brother, George H. Novell of Epping, N.H.; two sisters, Kathleen Dennis of Revere, Mass., and Lillian Colson of Newton, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews.

NOVELL - Herbert L. Novell, 68, of Sun City West, Ariz., died Jan. 6, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at the Bethany Church, 500 Breakfast Hill Road, Greenland, N.H. The service will be conducted by Pastor Fred Cheney. At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to New Hope Fellowship Church, 14435 R.H. Johnson Blvd., Sun City West, AZ 85375.

Charlie DeCoff

ALTON - Charlie DeCoff, 57, of Alton passed away suddenly Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, while working outdoors. The Portsmouth native moved to Alton from York, Maine. He retired as a master chief after serving in the U.S. Navy Reserve for 31 years and worked as a machinist with the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

Since his retirement, he and his wife traveled the country in their motor home. He was a member of the Advent Christian Church.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Dianne DeCoff; his parents, Thomas R. and Iva H. DeCoff of Dowling Park, Fla.; two sons, Marc N. DeCoff of Alton and Eric R. DeCoff of Atlanta; one daughter, Melody A. Simer of Baltimore, Md.; two brothers, Daniel S. DeCoff of Washington, Maine, and Chester E. DeCoff of South Berwick, Maine; and five grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Alton Bay Christian Conference Center for Camp Adventure, P.O. Box 321, Alton Bay, NH 03810. Daniels Funeral Home of Live Oak, Fla. is in charge of the arrangements.

Raymond F. Sullivan

NEWBURYPORT, Mass. - Raymond Francis Sullivan, 78, died Wednesday afternoon at his home.

He was the beloved husband of Mary K. (Lyons) Sullivan.

Born in Newburyport on July 22, 1923, son of the late John and Anna (Doyle) Sullivan, he was a lifelong resident of the city.

A graduate of Newburyport High School, Class of 1941, where he was the president of his class and captain of the basketball team, he worked as a general foreman at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for more than 30 years, until his retirement in 1980.

He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church of Newburyport and a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy.

Besides his wife of 54 years, he is survived by two sons, Michael P. Sullivan and his wife, Nancy, of Amesbury, and Kevin Sullivan and his wife, Ellen, of Newburyport; a sister, Louise Carey of Newburyport; his five cherished grandchildren, who were his life, Sean P., Katherine M. and Kevin M. Sullivan, all of Newburyport, and Meghan M. and Raymond M. Sullivan of Amesbury; five nieces and nephews, Mike Carey and Pat McCarthy of Newburyport, Nancy Kennison of Westborough, Murga Nipple of Acton, and Mary Ellen Fahey of Byfield.

He was the brother of the late John J. Sullivan.

SULLIVAN - Raymond Francis Sullivan, 78, of Newburyport, Mass., died Wednesday afternoon at his home. His funeral will be held at 10 o'clock on Saturday morning at Simplicity Burial & Cremation Services, 287 High St., Newburyport, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 11 o'clock at the Immaculate Conception Church, 34 Green Street, Newburyport. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Newburyport. Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

Edward A. Tankard

PEABODY, Mass. - Edward A. Tankard, 83, of Brooksby Village, Peabody, died Friday in a Beverly nursing home after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Dorothy (Parsons) Tankard, with whom he shared 60 years of marriage.

Born and educated in Berlin, N.H., he was the son of the late James E. and Carrie (Noddin) Tankard.

He attended Merrimack College and was a graduate of Lowell Institute, Class of 1941. He was also a graduate of the General Electric Co. Apprentice Program, and was a Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Tankard resided in Peabody for several years, previously residing in Lynn, Mass., and Berlin.

He was employed at General Electric Co., River Works, Turbine Division, as a manufacturing engineer for many years until his retirement in 1980. He was a member of the General Electric Co. Quarter Century Club, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, and the Mt. Carmel Lodge of Masons.

Mr. Tankard was an avid musician, and enjoyed playing the piano and organ. He was also and accomplished skier. He was a member of the Over 70 Ski Club, and a member of the former Old Lynn Snow Chasers.

In addition to his wife, he leaves two daughters, Gail Doliber and her husband, Edgar, of Lynn, and Joy Tankard of Peabody; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Jay Tankard; two brothers, Ernest Tankard and Harold Tankard; and a sister, Ann Price.

TANKARD - Edward A. Tankard, 83, of Peabody, Mass., died Feb. 1, 2002. A funeral will be held at 9 a.m., Monday, from the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple St., Lynn, Mass. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, at St. Stephen's Memorial Episcopal Church. Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend. Granville J. Lovely

HAMPTON FALLS, N.H. - Granville J. "Gramps" Lovely, 98, and a resident of 72 Exeter Road, Hampton Falls, died Wednesday at the Exeter Healthcare Center.

He was the husband of the late Mildred (Fitch) Lovely.

Born in Haverhill, Mass., May 12, 1903, he was the son of the late Edmund and Marie (White) Lovely. He had been a resident of Hampton Falls for the past 39 years, previously residing in Newbury, Mass.

He attended Newburyport schools and was a graduate of the Wentworth Institute class of 1922. He was employed as a pattern maker for many years in Boston.

Gramps was a master carpenter and decoy carver and had a workshop on the Plum Island Turnpike. Some of his carvings are featured at the Cushing Museum. He was a lover of nature and found great joy at his beloved Parker River Wildlife Refuge.

Granville is survived by several cousins and many loving friends.

LOVELY - Granville J. "Gramps" Lovely, 98, of Hampton Falls, died Jan. 30, 2002. His funeral will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, at Simplicity Burial & Cremation Services, 287 High Street, Newburyport, Mass. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Newburyport. Ruth E. Henderson

IONIA, Mich. - Mrs. Ruth E. Henderson, 95, of Easton Township, Ionia, passed away Feb. 1, 2002.

Born Nov. 18, 1906 in Toronto, she was the daughter of Jessie and Ida May (Spinney) Bennett.

She came to the United States when she was 5 years old, settling in Massachusetts. She was married to Arthur Henderson in 1924 in Massachusetts, moving to Portsmouth, N.H., where they spent most of their married life. Mr. Henderson preceded her in death in 1970. She has lived in Ionia since 1970 with her daughter, Sybil Laird.

Survivors include her four daughters, Ms. Laird, Mrs. Odis (Dorothy) Jones of Chittenango, N.Y., Mrs. Jerrold (Nancy) Satterlee of Ionia, Mich., and Mrs. Vincent (Sandra) Rosso of Lake Odessa; one son, Arthur (Blanche) Henderson of Greenland, N.H.; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Archie (Dorothy) Witham of Newmarket, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews.

HENDERSON - Ruth E. Henderson, 95, of Easton Township, Ionia, Mich., died Feb. 1, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, at the Lake Funeral Home in Ionia, with the Rev. William Belko, officiating. Final interment will be in Portsmouth, N.H. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Health Care. Pauline A. Moulton

ROLLINSFORD - Funeral services for Pauline A. (Garland) Moulton, 102, of Rollinsford and formerly of Rye, were held on Wednesday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth. The Rev. Mark A. Rideout, pastor of the First Parish United Church of Christ, officiated.

In attendance were representatives from Rivermouth Chapter No. 54 Order of the Eastern Star.

Burial will be in the Central Cemetery in Rye at the convenience of the family.

OES services were held at the funeral home on Wednesday evening by Rivermouth Chapter No. 54, including Worthy Matron, Frances M. Kendall, PM; Worthy Patron, George N. Flanders, PP; Chaplain, Ken D. Petruzzi, PP; Adah, Cathy A. Brown, PM; Ruth, Elizabeth E. Eckhart; Esther, Martha E. Petruzzi, PM; Martha, Margaret R. Gray; Electa, Edith L. Lovering, PM and Secretary; and Mary Ann Flanders, PM.
