Dunya D. "Mimi" Kuchtey

PORTSMOUTH - Dunya D. "Mimi" Kuchtey, 84, of 6 Sagamore Grove, recently residing in the Mark H. Wentworth Home in Portsmouth, died Wednesday, June 26, 2002. Beloved wife of Michael; mother of three, Michael of Portsmouth, Richard of Maui, Hawaii, and Joan Gittlein of Rye Beach; grandmother of five, Walter, John and Michael Kuchtey, and Kimberly and Kelly Gittlein; great-grandmother of six; and sister of two.

Born in Claremont, the belle of the town, she married her sweetheart, Mike, after graduating from Stevens High School. Together, she, with her business sensibility and talent for numbers, and he, with his unfailing charm and engineering ingenuity, built and ran Mike’s Marina, in Portsmouth, for nearly 50 years. As a reward for their hard work all year, they spent early spring sharing their Yankee warmth with friends and neighbors in sunny Fort Lauderdale, Fla. She was also a member of the Ann Judson Fellowship at the Middle Street Baptist Church in Portsmouth for many years and liked to play cards.

With a joy for entertaining and a taste for traditional New England cooking, she hosted decades of Thanksgiving feasts for more than 20 family and friends, always a celebration of food, love and togetherness. She leaves a legacy of warmth, kindness, love, vivacity, integrity, generosity and education advocacy with all who knew her.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Middle Street Baptist Church, 18 Court St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Bernard J. Pelczar

NEWMARKET - Bernard J. Pelczar, 83, formerly of North Main Street, died June 26, 2002, at Riverside Rest Home, Dover.

Born Nov. 21, 1918, in Newmarket, he was the son of John and Stephania (Krolikowski) Pelczar. He was educated in Connecticut schools and had lived in Newmarket for many years.

During World War II he served in the U.S. Army and was stationed with the 9th Evacuation Hospital in North Africa.

He worked as an electrician at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1971.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #68 in Portsmouth and the Disabled American Veterans Bellamy Chapter #5. He was a 59-year member of the American Legion. At the time of his death he was a member of the American Legion Post in Rollinsford and was a former member of the Robert G. Durgin A.L. Post #67 in Newmarket.

He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church, Newmarket.

Survivors include three daughters, Linda and her husband, Patrick Lizotte, of Milton, Cynthia and her husband, Arthur Keenan, of Bangor, Maine, and Bernadette and her husband, Steven Warner, of Epsom; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Janina Gagne of Bryant, Mass.; four nieces; eight nephews; and several cousins.

PELCZAR - Bernard J. Pelczar, 83, formerly of Newmarket, died Wednesday, June 26, 2002. Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday from St. Mary’s Church, with the Rev. John Finnigan as celebrant. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Newmarket.

Pauline T. (Hoitt) Sandford

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Pauline T. (Hoitt) Sandford, 79, of 115 Dennett St., were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, on Thursday, June 27, 2002. The Rev. David Thompson, pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Portsmouth, officiated.

In attendance were representatives from the Rebekahs.

Burial was in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by the Rev. Thompson.

Bearers were James Albies, John Rothstein, Joseph Quintini and Robert Woodburn.

Rebekah services were held Wednesday evening at the funeral home by Union Rebekah Lodge #3, including Marcia J. Whitney, PPRANH, IARA, Wilton, N.H.; Lily Marston, PPRANH, Winnicunnet #26; Mona M. Arthur D. "Butch" Arakelian

NORTH HAMPTON - Arthur D. "Butch" Arakelian, 58, died Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at his residence.

He was born in Lawrence, Mass., on Feb. 27, 1944, and was educated in Haverhill, Mass., graduating from Haverhill High School, Class of 1963.

He was an entrepreneur, starting with the Riverview Drive-In movie theater in Haverhill; the 495 Cinema, also in Haverhill; the Hy-way movie theater in Salisbury, Mass.; as well as the 95 Cinema, also in Salisbury.

He was the owner and operator of the former Cobblestones Restaurant (now Sylvan Street Restaurant) in Salisbury, adjacent to 95 Cinema. He was also the owner and operator of A&A Construction in Haverhill.

Through Arakelian Associates he helped sponsor the Haverhill Gazette Santa Claus Fund to help needy children.

He was the son of the late Sarkes Arakelian and is survived by his wife, Mary L. (Stanchis) Arakelian; his mother, Elizabeth (Chilpyian) Arakelian of Haverhill, Mass.; his son, Bruce D. Arakelian and his wife, Jyll, of Salem; stepson Roy J. Goudreault of Haverhill, Mass.; a brother, Harry Arakelian of Haverhill, Mass.; two granddaughters, Sachristy and Sydney Arakelian, both of Salem; a niece; and a nephew.

ARAKELIAN - Arthur D. "Butch" Arakelian, 58, of North Hampton, died Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at his residence. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. on Monday from the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St., Haverhill, Mass., followed by a service at 11 a.m. in St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Church, Main Street, Haverhill. Burial will follow in the Linwood Cemetery, Haverhill. Calling hours will be from 3 to 7 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 44 Binney St., Boston, MA 02115.

Jennie M. Fall

GREENLAND - Mrs. Jennie M. (Ireland) Fall, 90, wife of Charles H. Fall, of 451 Post Road, died Friday, June 28, 2002, at Exeter Hospital.

Born Oct. 14, 1911, in Greenland, she was the daughter of the late John M. and Florence (Coleman) Ireland.

She enjoyed cooking, knitting, crocheting, her flower gardens, and her family.

In addition to her husband, survivors include nieces and nephews Cheryl Duffy of Windham, Maine, Susan Wright of Atlanta, Ga., David Ireland of Atlanta, Ga., Charles, Doug, Larry, George, Richard and Ed Ireland of New Hampshire; Marilyn, John, Norman and June of New Hampshire; and many other nieces and nephews in New Hampshire and Maine.

FALL - Jennie M. (Ireland) Fall, 90, of 451 Post Road, Greenland, N.H., died June 28, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held from 6-8 p.m., Sunday, at the funeral home.

William W. Rowe

GREENLAND - William W. "Bill" Rowe, 69, of 792 Portsmouth Ave., died Friday, June 28, 2002, at the Kindred Hospital in Peabody, Mass.

Born Nov. 9, 1932, he was the son of the late Walter S. and Frances (Drury) Rowe and was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1951.

He served in the Air Force during the Korean War.

Before his retirement, he was employed as a splice service technician for New England Telephone. He was in the Christmas tree business for 60 years, a hobby which occupied much of his time after his retirement.

He enjoyed his time hosting functions at his Balsam Acres Farm in Greenland and his camp at Whites Pond in Ossipee.

He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Portsmouth; a life member of the American Legion, Post No. 67 of Newmarket; a member of the Telephone Pioneers and the Vermont/N.H. Christmas Tree Association.

An avid horseshoe player, he won the Whites Pond Labor Day Horseshoe Championship.

He leaves behind many friends and will be sadly missed.

ROWE - William W. "Bill" Rowe, 69, of 792 Portsmouth Ave., Greenland, N.H., died June 28, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, July 1, at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held from 5-8 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home. At his request, all calling during the visitation and funeral service should be dressed in casual attire, no suits. Memorial donations may be made to Greenland Vets, c/o Ronald Meyer, 13 Palm Drive, Greenland, NH 03840, or to the NHSPCA, P.O. Box 196, Stratham, NH 03885.

Richard W. Groton

NEW CASTLE - Lt. Col. Richard W. Groton, U.S. Army (Ret.), 82, of 39 Cranfield St., passed away Thursday, June 20, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born Sept. 10, 1919, in Portsmouth, he was the son of Robert and Ruth (Gray) Groton and had been a resident of New Castle since 1926.

He was a graduate of Berwick Academy, Class of 1938, and the University of Maryland.

He served in the Army during World War II, the occupation of Japan, in Korea and Vietnam, retiring in 1968 with 26 years of service. He then went to work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as an electrician for a period of 10 years.

He was a member of the York Militia, the Piscataqua Pioneers of which he was also a past president, and St. John Masonic Lodge in South Berwick, Maine.

Active in New Castle town affairs, he was a former town moderator, cemetery trustee, and trustee of the New Castle Congregational Church.

He was predeceased by his wife, Miriam (Herrick) Groton.

Survivors include his three children, Pamela Groton Lipson of Adelaide, South Australia, Richard Wayne Groton of New Castle, and Elizabeth Groton Watkins of Rye; four grandsons, Nathan Lipson, Aaron Lipson, Joel Lipson and James Watkins; two sisters, Roberta Groton Gray of Augusta, Maine, and Ruth J. Fogg of Amesbury, Mass. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

GROTON - Lt. Col. Richard W. Groton, U.S. Army (Ret.), 82, of New Castle, died June 20, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, at the New Castle Congregational Church. Visiting hours are from 6-8 p.m., Monday, at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Memorials may be made to the New Castle Congregational Church, Main Street, New Castle, NH 03854, or to Berwick Academy, South Berwick, ME 03908.

Francis E. Jacques

HAMPTON - The funeral for Francis E. Jacques, 84, of Hampton, who died June 24, 2002, was held Friday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory.

A Mass of Christian burial was concelebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. Maurice R. Larochelle, pastor, and the Rev. Phillip J. Enrico, associate pastor, were the celebrants.

Nelson K. Ward was organist and Patricia Mackensen was soloist.

Altar servers were Norman LaRose, Robert Rancourt and Edward Wakeen, all members of the Holy Name Society.

His grandchildren, Luke Murphy and Alison Murphy, placed the pall over the casket.

Burial followed in High Street Cemetery, with the Rite of Committal conducted by Father Larochelle.

Among those in attendance was a delegation of members from the Holy Name Society, led by George Glenfield, president. Pallbearers were Roland Poirier, George Poirier, John Poirier, Carl Poirier, Robert King and Luke Murphy.

Charles Thomas Griffiths

WELLESLEY HILLS, Mass. - Charles Thomas Griffiths, M.D., a pioneer in the treatment of ovarian cancer and one of the first surgeons in the country to be board certified in this gynecologic oncology, died peacefully on Thursday, June 27, 2002, surrounded by his family.

He was diagnosed with a sarcoma in January of this year. A resident of Wellesley Hills, Mass., for 38 years, he was 72 years old.

Son of the late C. Thomas Griffiths and Murray Longley Griffiths, he was born in Glendale, Calif., and spent his youth body surfing and diving for abalone in Newport Beach.

Graduating third in his class at Glendale High School, he was awarded the Donichy Award as the outstanding young man in scholarship, leadership and citizenship.

He matriculated to Stanford University, where he completed his college studies in three years, receiving a B.A. in 1951 and a medical degree in 1955.

He also competed on the varsity boxing team and was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity.

After an internship at Los Angeles County General Hospital, he completed his residency in surgery at Malden Hospital in Malden, Mass., and a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Boston Hospital for Women, where he founded the gynecologic oncology service.

As a lieutenant in the Navy’s Medical Corps, Dr. Griffiths served as the medical officer for two years aboard the USS Canberra.

After fellowships in OB/GYN at Harvard Medical School and tumor therapy at Children’s Cancer Research Foundation in Boston, Dr. Griffiths joined the faculty of Harvard Medical School in 1962, working at Boston Hospital for Women and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

During that time, he was the first surgical fellow at the Dana Farber Cancer Center in Boston. In 1990, he accepted a position at the Boston University School of Medicine, achieving the academic rank of professor before retiring in 1997.

He had a distinguished career as a surgeon, researcher, teacher and caregiver. He loved being a doctor.

Throughout his career, Dr. Griffiths was passionate about teaching and mentoring future surgeons. Even after his retirement, he taught a medical course each week at Boston University School of Medicine

During his lectures, Dr. Griffiths often quoted Oliver Wendell Holmes who said, "The physician’s task is to cure seldom, to relieve often, and to comfort always."

The author of four medical textbooks and nearly 100 original reports, chapters, and abstracts, Dr. Griffiths was a frequent lecturer, both domestically and internationally. His most recent paper will be published in the July/August issue of International Journal of Gynecological Cancer.

He was an active member of the International Gynecological Cancer Society, Society of Gynecologic Oncologists, American College of Surgeons, the Obstetrics Society of Boston, and the New England Association of Gynecological Oncologists, serving one year as its president.

In addition, Dr. Griffiths was an avid gardener, reader, and pianist who loved driving his antique MGB convertible.

Dr. Griffiths is survived by his wife of nearly 45 years, Diane MacKenzie Griffiths; his daughter and son-in-law, Lauren Griffiths and Rocco Ciocca, M.D., of Rocky Hill, N.J.; his son and daughter-in-law, Charles Thomas Griffiths III and Carrie Keating Griffiths of Rye, N.H., his mother-in-law, Florence Corey MacKenzie of Andover, Mass.; his four grandchildren, Caroline MacKenzie Ciocca, Margaret Douglass Ciocca, Thomas Woodard Griffiths, and Amelia Longley Griffiths; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Griffiths Griffen, in 1990.

GRIFFITHS - Charles Thomas Griffiths, M.D., a pioneer in the treatment of ovarian cancer, died June 27, 2002. A private burial service will be held today, Saturday, June 29, followed by a memorial service at 10 a.m., Monday, July 1, at St. Mary’s Church, Newton Lower Falls, Mass. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Massachusetts General Hospital for the C. Thomas Griffiths, M.D., Lectureship in Gynecologic Oncology, Massachusetts General Hospital, 100 Charles River Plaza, Suite 600, Boston, MA 02114.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., today, at the Middle Street Baptist Church, 18 Court St., Portsmouth. Friends invited. Following the memorial service, there will be an open house at 320 South Road, Rye, for all to share memories and photos. Visiting hours were held Friday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. CROSSEN - Frank Crossen, 56, of Portsmouth, died June 22, 2002. Full military graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 12 at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen, N.H. Arrangements by the Veterans Cremation and Burial Society, Clearwater, Fla.

Edward H. Kinsch

PORTSMOUTH - Mr. Edward H. Kinsch, 80, widower of Virginia (Burkehead) Kinsch, of 403 White Cedar Blvd., died Friday, June 28, 2002, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born in Chicago on May 30, 1922, the son of the late Henry and Frances Kinsch. Mr. Kinsch served in the United States Army during World War II and the Korean War.

Survivors include his daughter, Debra Palacio and her husband, Carlos, of Greenland, N.H.; four grandchildren, Jennifer Siske of Troop, Pa., and Daniel Palacio, Derek Palacio and Aubrey Palacio, all of Greenland.

Joan B. Howe

NORTH HAMPTON - The funeral for Joan B. Howe, 80, of 168 Lafayette Road, who died June 26, 2002, was held Saturday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach. The Rev. Maurice Lavigne, pastor, was the celebrant. Judith Kish was organist and pianist. Mary Louise Arcidi was cantor and soloist.

Burial followed in the Center Cemetery with the rite of committal conducted by Father Lavigne. Pallbearers were James Beauregard, John Beauregard, Robert O’Neill, Thomas O’Neill, Mark Daniels and Paul Ford.

MORSE - In Dorchester, Mass., formerly of Hampton, N.H., Evelyn M. (Norander) Morse. Beloved wife of the late Leon N. Loving mother of Leon N. and his wife, Gail E. Morse of Exeter, N.H. Sister of the late George E. Norander. Devoted grandmother of Leon N. III, Kevin L., Ginevra E., and John E. Morse. survived by several cousins. Visiting hours in the Murphy Funeral Home, 1020 Dorchester Ave., Dorchester, Monday 4-7 p.m. Funeral Mass in St. William's Church, Tuesday, July 2, at 9 a.m. Relatives and friends invited. Late former member of American Legion and U.S. Coast Guard auxiliaries. Former communicant at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, Hampton. Interment in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett, Mass. Funeral home handicapped-accessible, with ample parking.
