Eric L. Sillitta

ROCHESTER - Eric Lee Sillitta, 32, of 379 Portland St., died Saturday morning, July 13, 2002 at Frisbie Memorial Hospital, after suffering a long illness.

He was born in Dover on Jan. 6, 1970, the son of Richard and Deborah (St. Pierre) Gregoire. He had been a resident of the area his entire lifetime.

Mr. Sillitta worked as a home painter in the area for a number of years. He also had done work with Bret Steel in Dover. He enjoyed motorcycles and family gatherings.

He was predeceased by his treasured Memere, Theresa Gregoire, in 2001.

Surviving family members include his dad, Richard Gregoire, and his wife, Maria, of Florida; his mother Deborah Heidenstrom and her husband, Rick, of West Lebanon, Maine; his adoptive father, John Sillitta of Rochester; two sisters, Tanya Gilpatrick of Somersworth and Cassandra Sillitta of Boston; two brothers, Jeffrey and Mathew Gregoire, both of Portsmouth; a grandmother, Norma Fernandes of Florida; a grandfather, Edward St. Pierre of Hawaii; stepsisters and stepbrothers; one nephew; two nieces; cousins; aunts; uncles; and many friends.

SILLITTA - Family members and friends may call Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at H.J. Grondin & Son Funeral Home, 177 North Main St., Rochester. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Rosary Church, Rochester. Following cremation, his urn will be buried beside his grandmother in St. Charles Cemetery, Dover. Flowers are acceptable and would be appreciated, per Eric’s wishes.

FREDERICKS - Beatrice G. Fredericks, 98, formerly of North Hampton, died July 11, 2002. Services will be held in the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, Monday at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the funeral home today at 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Eastern Star services are this evening at 6 p.m. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery, Amesbury, Mass.

Mabelle G. Clocher

HAMPTON FALLS - Mabelle G. Clocher, 92, of Drinkwater Road, died Saturday, July 13, 2002, at her home.

She was born Dec. 27, 1909, a daughter of the late Arthur A. and Caroline (Dwyer) Morin, and resided in Haverhill, Mass., before retiring to New Hampshire.

She was educated in Haverhill and attended McIntosh Business School. She pursued her career as an office manager for many years and co-owned and operated the Alice-Mae Shop in Haverhill with her dear friend, Alice.

She will be remembered in many heartfelt ways including her love of baking, travel and the time spent with family and her special friends. She took particular joy in many hours of knitting infant sweaters and blankets for her great-grandchildren, several charity groups and young families in the U.S. armed forces.

She was a longtime member of St. James Parish of Haverhill before moving to New Hampshire, where she attended Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Parish. She was an active member of RSVP, the Seabrook Women’s Club, Hampton Falls Grange and a life member of the Happy Seniors. Most of all, she will be remembered for a goodness of spirit and heart, a gift that has transcended generations.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ernest J. Clocher, who died in 1984; one sister; and four brothers.

Family members include her son, Robert E. Clocher and his wife, Shirley, of Seabrook; her daughter, Janet M. Poisson and her husband, Leo, of Hampton Falls; two brothers and their wives, Leo and Rita Morin of Bradford, Mass., and Albert and Connie Morin of Kingston; four sisters, Helen St. Onge of Newton, Irene Veroneau of Haverhill, Mass., Loretta Steer of Newton, and Mary-Rose Cerat of So. Pine, N.C.; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and very dear friends.

CLOCHER - Mabelle G. Clocher, 92, of Drinkwater Road, Hampton Falls, died Saturday, July 13, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Haverhill, Mass. Evelyn (Jackson) Burford

HAMPTON - Evelyn (Jackson) Burford, 96, of 27 North Shore Road, a former resident of 3 Foster Lane, Rye, died Sunday, July 14, 2002, after a brief illness, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

She was born Dec. 9, 1905, in Leigh, Lancashire, England, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Jackson. She came to the United States with her parents and sister, at the age of 15, and had lived in both Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

She was predeceased by her husband of 68 years, William B. Burford, who died in 1996. They had resided at 3 Foster Lane in Rye for much of that time.

In Oct. 2001, due to failing health, she moved in with her son in Hampton.

She is survived by her beloved son, William B. Burford Jr.; several nieces and nephews, including Dr. John Burford and Janet Stott of Auckland, New Zealand, who visited here often; and her son’s close friend and partner, George Morrissey.

BURFORD - Evelyn Burford, 96, of 27 North Shore Road, Hampton, formerly of Rye Beach, died July 14, 2002. Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Bartholomew Leon at 12 noon on Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Central Cemetery, Rye.

Steven Morang

MERRIMACK - Steven Morang, 75, of 41 Hummingbird Drive, died on July 11, 2002, at Community Hospice House in Merrimack after a brief illness.

Steve was born on July 23, 1926, in Portsmouth, the son of the late Ralph and Alice (Stevens) Morang.

He was the youngest Eagle Scout in the U.S. in 1939. He was elected to receive the American Legion School Award in Portsmouth in 1940. He was a Past Master Councilor of DeMolay.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran and served in World War II. He was a Professor of Economics and Business at the University of Maine, at Augusta, for 18 years. He also taught at Dean Junior College in Franklin, Mass. and Bentley College, Waltham, Mass. He was a graduate of the University of New Hampshire and did postgraduate work at Boston College and Babson College.

He loved teaching, reading, singing, nature, the ocean, sailing ships, and was interested in everything. Steve was a man of all seasons - he was an intellectual who loved doing construction work. He would change a diaper, clean a bathroom or do the dishes.

In addition to his wife of 12 years, Barbara (Bliss) Morang, he is survived by his son, David Morang and his wife Belinda of Merrimack; daughter, Steffani Morang O’Hanlon and her husband Bill of Santa Fe, New Mexico; grandchildren, Sarah and Laura Morang of Merrimack; brother, Charles H. Morang, Esq. and his wife Pam of Keene; sister-in-law, Ida Morang of Rye, widow of his brother, Ralph E. Morang; and nine nieces and nephews.

MORANG - Steven Morang, 75, of 41 Hummingbird Drive, Merrimack, N.H., died July 11, 2002. A memorial service will be held on at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 21, 2002, at Merrimack Meadows Community Center, Hummingbird Drive, Merrimack. Donations can be made to the North Bridgton Library, North Bridgton, ME 04057, where Steve was a volunteer and organizer of the annual book sale for several years. Michael W. Caswell

DOVER - Michael W. Caswell, 44, of 26 George St., died unexpectedly Saturday, July 13, 2002.

He was born in Wiesbaden, Germany, on Jan. 27, 1958, the son of Lt. Col. Roger W. Caswell and Pauline (Trudeau) Caswell. He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School and formerly resided in Greenland, N.H. and Buxport, Me., prior to moving here five years ago.

For the past five years he has been employed at Dion’s Yacht Yard in Kittery, Me. and was formerly employed at the Hinkley Boat Yard in Southeast Harbor, Me. He enjoyed woodcarving and made, among other things, ducks and owls. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed hunting.

He is survived by his mother Pauline (Trudeau) Caswell of Dover; three brothers, Richard "Rick" Caswell of Sun Valley, Calif., Roger A. Caswell of Atlanta, Ga., Robert Caswell of Dover; a sister, Paula Caswell of Springfield, Mo.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his father, Lt. Col. Roger W. Caswell, USAF, Ret.

CASWELL - Michael W. Caswell, 44, of 26 George St. in Dover died July 13, 2002. Relatives and friends are invited to call Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Avenue, Dover. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, at St. Joseph Church, 150 Central Ave., with Rev. Paul Ruzzo, Associate Pastor, as celebrant. Angelo "Val" Valzania

GREENLAND - Angelo "Val" Valzania, 81, of 359 Post Road, Greenland died Monday, July 8, 2002, at York Hospital after a period of failing health.

Born in Portsmouth on July 3, 1921, he was the son of John and Theresa (DelaPasqua) Valzania and was a lifelong resident of the area.

He was a veteran of World War II and Korea, serving in the U.S. Navy.

He was employed for many years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, retiring from design liaison in 1973. After retiring, he worked in real estate and taught building trades at Portsmouth High School for several years.

He was also active in Scouting and was a former Scoutmaster.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Eleanor (Balboni) Valzania; two sons, Wayne Valzania of Manlius, N.Y., and Douglas Valzania of Seabrook; one daughter, Elaina Valzania of Greenland; five grandchildren, Melissa, Matthew, Sarah, Misty and Angela; and one great-granddaughter, Amber Marie.

VALZANIA - Angelo "Val" Valzania, 81, of Post Road, Greenland, died July 8, 2002. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 20, 2002, at the Church of the Immaculate Conception. A reception will follow at the Moose Lodge on Sagamore Avenue. Friends are invited. Arrangements are by the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Harold J. Silverman

PORTSMOUTH - Harold J. Silverman, 88, husband of Renee (Feldman) Silverman, of 96 Miller Ave., died peacefully at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a brief illness.

Son of the late Morris and Ida (Goodman) Silverman, he was born April 4, 1914, in Portsmouth, attended Portsmouth schools, and graduated from Dartmouth College in 1935. Shortly afterward, he became a deputy collector in the Internal Revenue Department, working out of the Littleton office. In 1941, he was drafted into the United States Army. He was commissioned a second lieutanant and served five years in the North Africa and European theatres. He was discharged in 1946 at the rank of captain, acting as chief of the currency section in the American zone of Austria. He owned and operated the Fashion Shop in Dover from 1946 to 1958, when he became a buyer at Hess Bros. in Allentown, Pa., and then became a manager of Karvette’s in Philadelphia. In 1966, he returned to Portsmouth, where he owned and operated the Federal Cigar Store until the business was sold in 1981. During that time the late editor of the Portsmouth Herald, Ray Brighton, dubbed him "The Sage of Market Square."

He was appointed by the late Gov. Gallen to the Maine-N.H. Bridge Authority, serving as clerk until he resigned in 1998.

He was a member of St. John’s Lodge #1 F&AM of Portsmouth, Bektash Shrine and the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks #97 in Portsmouth. He was also a proprietor at the Portsmouth Athenaeum and a member of Temple Israel in Portsmouth; at the time of death he was the oldest member of the congregation born in Portsmouth.

Besides his wife, survivors include his brother, Ralph W. Silverman of Memphis, Tenn.; two sisters, Dorothy Freedman and Arlene Ross of Delray Beach, Fla.; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and one great-great-nephew.

SILVERMAN - Harold J. Silverman, 88, of 96 Miller Ave., Portsmouth, died Tuesday, July 16, 2002. A graveside service will be held at 12 noon on Wednesday at Temple Israel Cemetery, Banfield Road, Portsmouth. There will be no visiting hours. Kindly omit flowers. Shiva, the mourning period, will be observed privately. Memorials can be made to a charity of one’s choice in memory of Harold J. Silverman. Arrangements are by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.

Beatrice G. Fredericks

HAMPTON - The funeral for Beatrice G. Fredericks, 98, formerly of North Hampton and Seabrook, who died July 11, 2002, was held Monday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. The Rev. Diane Pierce, pastor of Trinity United Church, officiated. Jean Goss was organist. Burial followed in the Union Cemetery, Amesbury, Mass., with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Pierce. Order of Eastern Star services were conducted by Orient Chapter #22 of Exeter on Sunday evening at the funeral home.

Basil J. F. Mott

DURHAM - Basil J. F. Mott, Ph.D., 78, Dean Emeritus of the School of Health and Human Services at the University of New Hampshire, died at his home on Sunday, July 14, 2002.

He graduated from Amherst College and received his doctorate from the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government. When he became dean of the School of Health Studies (now named the School of Health and Human Services) in 1973, there was a student body of 600. When he retired in 1986, the enrollment had doubled. His contributions to the school included bringing two master’s programs into the departments of nursing and communications disorders and the creation of a cardiac rehabilitation program, the first in New Hampshire to be university-directed. The School of Health Studies became a major asset to the state and obtained national recognition for its excellent faculty and programs.

He spent 40 years studying, teaching and writing about the politics of health care. He was regional director of the Easter Seals Society, an assistant professor at Columbia University and an associate professor at the Harvard School of Public Health. He was a consultant to many hospital boards around the country and served as a consultant to the World Health Organization. He served as a Navy carrier pilot in World War II. He later pursued other activities with equal commitment: a glider pilot and a scuba diver, and in the past five years he made three white-water rafting trips and two whale-watching adventures in the Baja. His latest pursuit was writing non-fiction. He had many articles published and was in the process of writing his memoirs when he succumbed to illness.

He leaves his wife, Ruth; a sister; three children; two granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.

MOTT - Basil J. F. Mott, 78, of Durham, died Sunday, July 14, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at his home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Basil J. F. Mott Leadership Award, UNH Foundation, 9 Edgewood Road, Durham, NH 03824; or to the Seacoast Hospice, 642 Central Ave., Dover NH, 03820.

Reginald E. Perry Sr.

EXETER - Reginald E. Perry Sr., 84, of 8 Wayside Drive, died Monday, July 15, 2002, at the Exeter Hospital with his family present after a courageous battle with heart disease.

Mr. Perry was born in Exeter on May 29, 1921, son of the late William D. and Harriet M. (Lord) Perry.

He was a retired certified manufacturing engineer.

During World War II, he was a member of the Army Air Corps, serving in the European Theater with the 351st Heavy Bomber Group of the 8th Air Force.

He was active in the Boy Scouts for more than 20 years, serving as Scoutmaster, Explorer post adviser, neighborhood commissioner, and assistant district commissioner. He was awarded the Scouters Key and the Scouters Award.

He was a life member of Exeter Chapter 13 Disabled American Veterans; a life member and past grand knight of Exeter Council No. 2179 of the Knights of Columbus; and a life member and past faithful navigator of Exeter General Assembly No. 0639, 4th Degree of the Knights of Columbus.

He was a former district deputy of the Knights of Columbus and received the high honors of District Deputy of the Year in the state of New Hampshire.

He was a communicant of St. Michael’s Church of Exeter.

In addition to his wife of 60 years, Barbara (Barnea) Perry, he is survived by three sons, Michael Perry of Stratham, the Rev. Steven Perry of Pittsfield, Mass., and Reginald "Budd" Perry of Portsmouth; one daughter, Pamela-Sue Brown and her fiancé, Mark Cornish, of Exeter; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert Eldredge of Exeter; one sister, Frances O’Connor of Exeter; and nieces and nephews. e later pursued other activities with equal commitment: a glider pilot and a scuba diver, and in the past five years he made three white-water rafting trips and two whale-watching adventures in the Baja. PERRY - Reginald E. Perry, 84, of Wayside Drive, Exeter, died July 15, 2002. Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Michael’s Church in Exeter. Burial with military honors will follow in the Exeter Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Cardiac Rehab Department at Exeter Hospital, 10 Buzzell Ave., Exeter, NH 03833, Attn.: Barbara MacDonald.
