Larry Smith

KITTERY, Maine - A memorial service for Larry Smith was held Sept. 4, 2002, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery. The Rev. Wayne Nelson of the Church of God in Rochester opened the service with words of remembrance and Scripture readings. The well attended service was offered jointly by the DAV of Newington and the American Legion Post 6 of Portsmouth. The service was led by Richard Couture of the DAV and Commander Donald Poisson of the American Legion Post, accompanied by members of both posts. An American flag honoring his service to his country was presented to his son, Christopher Smith. Others in attendance besides his family were members of his extended family at the Foxwell Community in Kittery, members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and former schoolmates. Services were entrusted to the care of the J.S. Pelkey Funeral home of Kittery.

June L. Higgins

RYE - The funeral for June L. Higgins, 74, of 34 Granite Post Green, North Hampton, and formerly of Rye, who died Sept. 2, 2002, was held Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. Services were conducted in the Rye Congregational Church. The Rev. John A. Solie, pastor, officiated. Donna Lewallen was organist and pianist. Ushers were Ron Freeze, Don Pongrace and Mel Low. Scriptural readings, a poem and words of remembrance were offered by family members. Burial followed in the Central Cemetery, with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Solie. Pallbearers were Adam Greene, Bob Higgins, Rick Higgins, Paul Higgins, Travis Higgins, Jeffrey Higgins, Nate Piper, Joshua Piper, Zachary Piper and Mike Riley.

Emerald D. Turbyne

PORTSMOUTH - Emerald D. (Ward) Turbyne, wife of the late Frank W. Turbyne, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth, following a long illness.

She was born in Swanville, Maine, the daughter of the late Arnold and Annie L. (Smart) Ward, and graduated first in her class from Winslow High School in 1936. She worked as a secretary for the Hollingsworth and Whitney Company until her marriage to Frank in 1943.

She was a homemaker, who focused her life around her family. She was a member of the North Congregational Church of Portsmouth and taught Sunday school there for many years. She was an avid bowler, enjoyed crafts and loved solving puzzles of any kind. Her greatest enjoyment, however, throughout her life, was taking care of her family, which grew to include five great-grandchildren.

Surviving are her children, daughter Barbara Stuart and husband, Tom, of Portsmouth, and their sons, Jeff and his wife, Amy, of Newmarket, and John, Brian and Michael of Portsmouth; daughter Natalie Stone and her husband, Robert, of Greenland, and their children, Jason and Matt of Greenland, and Christina Stone of Richmond, Va.; son-in-law Joseph Coffey and his wife, Bobbi, of Hampton, with their children, Christopher Coffey and his wife, Robin, of Lebanon, Maine, William Coffey of Hampton, and Pamela Coffey of North Hampton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Frank W. Turbyne; daughter Francis Coffey; and granddaughter Katherine Stuart.

TURBYNE - Emerald D. (Ward) Turbyne, of Portsmouth, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Interment will be beside her husband in Harmony Grove Cemetery, South Street, Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Gestures of remembrance may be made in the form of flowers or contributions to a charity of one's choice.

Doris E. Simpson

EXETER - Doris E. Simpson, 84, of 5 Auburn St., died Sept. 4, 2002, at Exeter Healthcare after a brief illness.

A native and lifelong resident of Exeter, she was born June 11, 1918, the daughter of the late John and Ida (Moore) Noonan.

She attended St. Michael’s Church in Exeter and was formerly employed as a nurse practitioner at the Exeter clinic. She was a member of the Exeter Women’s Club and was past president of the Exeter Fire Department Ladies’ Auxiliary. She was an active volunteer at Exeter Healthcare.

Mrs. Simpson was predeceased by her husband, retired Exeter Fire Chief Ray Simpson Sr.

She is survived by her son, Kensington Fire Chief Ray Simpson Jr. of Exeter; her daughter, Martha Simpson of Portsmouth; her granddaughter, Annette Simpson of Kensington; her great-grandson, Glennon Eaton; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

SIMPSON - Doris E. Simpson, 84, of 5 Auburn St., Exeter, died Sept. 4, 2002. There will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, at 10 a.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. The Rev. David Lennox will officiate the service. Burial will follow at the Exeter Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Kensington Volunteer Fire Department, 124 Amesbury Road, Kensington, NH 03833.

Carol R. Barker

BERWICK, Maine - Carol Ruth Barker, 59, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

She was born Sept. 4, 1943, in Lowell, Mass., the daughter of Walter and Eunice (Critcherly) Hancock. She attended local schools and later attended Dover High School, from which she graduated.

She was a devoted housewife, who took great pride in her home, and was also very proud of her Irish and English ancestry. She was very active, participating at Tri-City Bingo. She loved shopping and was a big help in her husband’s lawn-care and snow-removal business.

She loved children and loved her pets, and according to family members she was a "neat aunt."

She is survived by her husband, Bruce Richard Barker of Berwick; and a brother, Edward Hancock of Somersworth, N.H.

BARKER - Carol Ruth (Hancock) Barker, 59, of Berwick, Maine, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital. Visitation hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine. A graveside committal service and burial will take place at 2 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, in Orchard Grove Cemetery, Kittery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, Kittery.

Arthur E. Baca

PORTSMOUTH - Arthur Edmund Baca, known as Eddie Howard, was born May 10, 1969 in Albuquerque, N.M., to Donna J. Howard and Arthur Baca. A longtime resident of Portsmouth, he passed away at Portsmouth Regional Hospital surrounded by his family following a brief, courageous battle with cancer Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002.

In addition to his mother, Donna J. Howard of Portsmouth, Eddie is survived by his daughter, Cassandra Jade, and his son, Hayden Mitchell, as well as two brothers, Dennis Daniel Baca and James Edwin Howard II, both of Rochester; and his maternal grandmother Anne H. Shanahan of Newmarket.

He was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Edmund M. Shanahan. He leaves behind numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and a multitude of friends.

The family extends a special thanks to his angel, Mike, and his night nurse, Brenda, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital for their constant care and protection.

Eddie will be remembered as a devoted father, loving son, and a caring individual. His kindness and humor will be missed by all who knew him.

BACA - Arthur Edmund Baca (Eddie Howard), 33, of Portsmouth, died Sept. 5, 2002. A memorial service will be held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad Street, Portsmouth, Sat., Sept. 7 at 4 p.m. Friends invited. No visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in memory of Arthur Baca be sent to Northeast Credit Union under: Dennis Baca, 100 Borthwick Ave, Portsmouth, NH 03801, donations will be forwarded to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.

Lester W. Thomas

ELIOT, Maine - Lester W. Thomas, 91, of 4 Sherwood Drive, died peacefully at his home, Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, following a short illness.

Mr. Thomas was born Jan. 25, 1911 in Kittery, Maine, the son of

George A. and Grace (Manson) Thomas.

He attended local schools in Kittery and retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard after more than 20 years of service.

Mr. Thomas was an avid model builder, a member of the Ponderosa RC Hawks Model Aircraft Flying Clubs and a devoted Red Sox fan.

He greatly loved his three children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson and his beloved coon cat, Torbie.

Mr. Thomas was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Dorothy (Evirs) Thomas, in 1998; brothers, Willis and Paul Thomas; sisters, Helen Cuttin Goss and Marguerite Goodnough.

Survivors include his three children, Kenneth Thomas and his wife, Catherine, of Rochester, and formerly of Eliot, Maine; Francis Thomas and his wife, Lorraine, and Sharon (Thomas) Kibat and her husband, Casey, all of Eliot; nine grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson; sisters, Mildred Leary, Hilda Thomas and Evelyn Deady, all of Kittery; and several nieces and nephews.

THOMAS - Lester W. Thomas, 91, of 4 Sherwood Drive, Eliot, ME, died Sept. 5, 2002. A funeral service will be held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, Monday at 1 p.m. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home, Sunday 2-4 p.m. Family flowers only. Verna P. Tierney

LEXINGTON, Mass. - Verna P. (Gaziano) Tierney died Sept. 5, 2002. She was the wife of L. Leonard Tierney; the mother of Phyllisellen Simpson and her husband, John, of Concord, Mass., Joan Tierney Allen of Rye, N.H., and Lenny Tierney and his wife, Mary, of Reading, Mass.; and the grandmother of Kiley Tierney, Jonathan Tierney, Tyler Tierney, Amanda Simpson, Becky Simpson, Melissa Allen and Christopher Allen. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

TIERNEY - Verna P. (Gaziano) Tierney, of Lexington, Mass., died Sept. 5, 2002. A funeral will be held at 9 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, from the Douglass Funeral Home, 51 Worthen Road, Lexington, Mass., followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at Our Lady Comforter Church, Waltham, Mass. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday. Interment will be in Westview Cemetery, Lexington, Mass.

Jay M. Smith

Jay M. Smith, of Sheafe Street in Portsmouth died suddenly on Sept. 5, 2002 at the age of 65. Born in Ohio, Jay made Portsmouth his home since the mid-1970s.

Jay graduated from Colby College in 1963. He served in the U.S. Army as part of an entertainment corps. He worked in the news business for many years, including Channel 11, Channel 38, and wrote for several newspapers. He wrote for "Publick Occurrences" in Durham and is credited with helping defeat Aristotle Onassis’ plan to build an oil pipeline to Durham.

He was dedicated to Portsmouth, to preservation and to the arts of all kinds, but his special love was music. He served on the Portsmouth City Council for a term in the early 1990s and also was a longtime member of the Historic District Commission.

He was active on many, many nonprofit boards over the years and active in Democratic politics. He was a patron of the arts and a quiet supporter of many charities and friends in need. Most recently he had been restoring historic properties.

He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

There will be a memorial service open to the public at The Music Hall on Tuesday, Sept. 10 from 4 to 6 p.m. Please bring instruments and stories. There will be a gathering afterwards upstairs at the Press Room. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Jay’s name to The Music Hall or to the Tommy Gallant Scholarship fund.

Thomas L. Gosselin

ELIOT, Maine - Thomas L. Gosselin, 66, of Governor Hill Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born on Dec. 22, 1935, in South Berwick, he was the son of Thomas H. and Elizabeth (Rogers) Gosselin. He attended local schools and graduated from Eliot High School with the Class of 1954. During his high school years, he worked with the town of Eliot Highway Department plowing roads. He was employed by Shapleigh Construction as a heavy equipment operator for more than 35 years.

He and his wife of more than 37 years, Roberta (Hawkins) Gosselin, were married in 1965 and have made their home and raised their children in Eliot. He will be remembered for his quiet demeanor, kind heart and generosity. His children and grandchildren, whom he adored, will truly miss his good-natured teasing and practical jokes. He was a former member of the Moose Lodge in Portsmouth, N.H., and attended the First Congregational Church of Eliot. He was also a former Little League coach in Eliot.

He is survived by his wife, Roberta; a son Timothy Sr. and his wife, Susan Dailey, of Eliot and their four children, Jodi, Jillian, Timothy Jr. and Jenna; daughter Kim and her husband, Michael Bacher, of Groveland, Mass., and their two children, Jacob and Andrew; daughter Michelle and her husband, Brian Moynihan, of Yarmouth, Maine, and their two children, Ethan and Erin; one great-grandson, Dakota Dailey; and a stepbrother, Gerry Howard of North Carolina.

GOSSELIN - Thomas L. Gosselin, 66, of Governor Hill Road in Eliot, Maine, died Sept. 4, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept., 9, 2002, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept., 8, 2002. Family flowers only; donations may be made in his memory to the American Heart Association, Maine Affiliate Inc., P.O. Box 346, Augusta ME 04332-0346; or to the American Lung Association, 122 State St., Augusta, ME 04330-5615. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Agnes B. Maxam

RYE - Funeral services for Agnes B. Maxam, 84, of Wallis Road, Rye, were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, Friday, with services held at the Rye Congregational Church. Rev. John Solie, pastor, officiated. Ushers were Dick Tompkins, George Carpenter, and Nancy Winthrop. Soloist was Holly Solie and the organist was Donna Lewallen.

In attendance were members of the church. Burial was in Central Cemetery, Rye, with committal services by Rev. Solie.

Bearers were Richard I. Morrill, Eric M. Young, William E. Gladhill, William F. Gladhill, Peter E. Follansbee, and Randy Tompkins.

PELLETIER - Armand Pelletier, 91, of 27 River Ave., Hampton, died peacefully at Exeter Hospital on Friday morning, Sept. 6, 2002. Funeral services will be held at the Robert K. Gray Jr. Funeral Home at 11 a.m. on Monday morning, Sept. 9, 2002. Family and friends are invited to call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday evening, Sept. 8, at the Robert K. Gray Jr. Funeral Home, 24 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton. His burial will follow in the family lot in St. Louis Cemetery, 752 West Hollis St., Nashua, with committal prayers at 12:30 p.m. In his memory, contributions may be made to the Seacoast Visiting Nurses Association, 29 Lafayette Road, North Hampton, NH 03862.

Lucy Bume

STRATHAM - Funeral services were held Saturday morning from the Stratham Community Church for Lucy (Chapman) Bume. The Rev. Mark F. Strickland officiated. Sally Wool was organist.

In attendance were church members, Friends of the Wiggin Memorial Library and employees of the Lane Memorial Library of Hampton.

Committal services were held at Maple Lane Cemetery, with the Rev. Strickland giving committal prayers.

Phyllis M. Rust

HAMPTON - Phyllis M. Rust, 74, of 7 Hemlock Haven, died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at the Exeter Hospital.

She was born in Beverly, Mass., Dec. 19, 1927, a daughter of the late George and Velma (Groce) Gosbee.

Mrs. Rust resided in Hampton the past 20 years, coming from Beverly where she had been a longtime resident.

Family members include one daughter, Coleen A. Gale of Salem; two sons, Kenneth Rust of California and Mark Rust of Hampton; one granddaughter, Malissa of California; and many nieces and nephews.

RUST - Phyllis M. Rust, 74, of 7 Hemlock Haven, Hampton, died Sept. 6, 2002. A graveside service will be held in the North Beverly Cemetery, Beverly, Mass., Tuesday at 1 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday.

Madalyn M. Conant

STRATHAM - Largely attended funeral services were held Thursday for Madalyn M. (Stuart) Conant of North Hampton, a former Portsmouth resident who died Aug. 31, 2002.

Services were held from the Stratham Community Church with the Rev. Mark F. Strickland, pastor, officiating. He was assisted by the Rev. Richard Arnold of Wakefield, N.H.

A duet was offered by Nancy Day and Cheryl Stallings. Words of remembrance were by Mrs. Conant’s son, Richard Conant, and Andy Conant gave a reading.

Burial followed at the family lot in Greenwood Cemetery, Stratham, with prayers by the Rev. Arnold. Bearers were grandchildren Darren Conant, Blaine Conant, Andy Conant, Scott Hodgdon, Jeff Hodgdon, Daryl Conant, Todd Conant and Glen Lajoie.

Marilyn E. Powell

WILTON - Marilyn E. Powell, 64, formerly of Exeter and Beverly, Mass., died peacefully Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, at her daughter’s home in Wilton after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

She was born April 7, 1938, in East Boston, Mass., daughter of the late Clarence E. and Mary Ellen (Sampson) Powell. She was a 1955 graduate of Revere High School in Revere, Mass.

She had retired after many years as a waitress in several different restaurants in the North Shore (Mass.) area. She was a skilled craftmaker and seamstress, and also enjoyed knitting, crocheting and crossword puzzles.

Survivors include two daughters, Robin Spaziani of Londonderry, and Jennifer Spaziani of Wilton; two sons, Russell Spaziani of Danvers, Mass., and Stephen Spaziani of San Matteo, Calif.; nine grandchildren; two brothers, Edward Powell of Lady Lake, Fla., and Stephen Powell of Saugus, Mass.; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.

POWELL - Marilyn E. Powell, 64, formerly of Exeter and Beverly, Mass., died Sept. 5, 2002, in Wilton. There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Laurel Hill Cemetery on Abbott Hill Road in Wilton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Ms. Powell’s name to the American Cancer Society, The Gail Singer Memorial Building, 360 Route 101, Unit No. 8, Bedford, NH 03110. The Cournoyer Funeral Home and Cremation Center of Jaffrey is assisting Ms. Powell’s family with arrangements.
