Mary Frances Janvrin LaGuardia

HAMPTON - The funeral for Mary Frances Janvrin LaGuardia, 82, of Las Vegas, formerly of Hampton Falls, who died Oct. 11, 2002 in Albuquerque, N.M. was held Saturday, Oct. 19, in the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory.

The Rev. Richard Chaffin, retired Methodist minister of Cross Plains, Texas, officiated. Jean Goss was organist and Elaine Robbins was soloist.

Burial followed in the Brookside Cemetery, Hampton Falls with the committal service conducted by Rev. Chaffin.

Pallbearers were Robert Janvrin, Edwin Hayes, Bruce Sherman, Phillip Dail, William Dail and Richard Dail.

WEEKS - Alan B. Weeks, 71, of 7 Heather Lane, Hampton died Oct. 18, 2002. A private memorial service will be held in the Episcopal chapel, Hampton Falls. The Rev. Peter Lane, vicar of the Trinity Episcopal Church, Hampton, will officiate. Committal services will follow in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833. Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Richard S. Howe

GREENLAND - Richard S. Howe, 76, of 7 Coombs Farm Road, died peacefully on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at the Webster of Rye Health and Retirement Center in Rye, New Hampshire.

Born in Rochester, N.Y. on January 8, 1926, he was the son of the late Henry Lawrence Howe II and Ethylinde (Smith) Howe. He served his country during World War II on the USS Tarawa as a lieutenant junior grade. After the war, he attended Northwestern University graduating with a management degree. While at Northwestern he met his wife, Sally Mercer, to whom he was married for almost 50 years. His wife predeceased him on Dec. 15, 1998.

He is survived by his children and grand children: a daughter Holly H. Forbes of Greenland, N.H., her husband David and their two children, Talor and Ryan; a daughter Laurel H. Stone of Lebanon, N.J. and her husband Dick Legge; and a son, Richard L. Howe of High Bridge, N.J. and his wife Sherry and their three children, Mark, Sarah and Matthew. He is also survived by his faithful furry companion "Lucky," a Welsh Corgi, who brought him great joy, laughter and companionship.

His last four years were enhanced by his association with members and staff of the Rusty Hinges at the Portsmouth YMCA, the Portsmouth Senior Center, Senior Friends through the Portsmouth Hospital, and The Rye Over 55 Club.

HOWE - Richard S. Howe, 76, of 7 Coombs Farm Road, Greenland, died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at the Webster of Rye Health and Retirement Center in Rye, New Hampshire. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Edwin R. "Ed" Baker

EXETER - Edwin R. "Ed" Baker, 71, of 19 Appledore Ave., died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002 at Sunbridge of Exeter.

He was born Dec. 24, 1930 in Detroit, Mich., the son of the late Willis A. and Ann (White) Baker. He resided in the Seacoast area most of his life.

He was raised in Epping and was a graduate of Watson Academy and the University of New Hampshire in Durham with the Class of 1952.

He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and while serving in the reserves was promoted to the rank of captain.

He was employed by the former Exeter Banking Company working over the years in every department of the bank. He retired as senior vice president after 40 years of service.

He was a member of the Star in the East Lodge No. 59 F.&A.M. of Exeter, Scottish Rite Body Valley of Nashua. He was also a member of the Exeter Rotary Club; a member and past president of both the Exeter Chamber of Commerce and Junior Chamber; treasurer of the Eventide Nursing Home at the time of his death. He also served as an instructor for the American Institute of Banking for many years.

He enjoyed many fishing trips with his close friends, where he enjoyed serving as chef. His fishing grounds of choice were in Maine.

Family members include his wife of 22 years, Sylvia (Peaslee) Baker of Exeter; two sons, Peter Baker of Newmarket, David Baker of East Kingston; one daughter, Julie Stevens of Brentwood; their mother, Betsy N. Baker of Brentwood; seven grandsons; one step-daughter, Virginia F. Lalley of Irontown, Mich.; two step-sons, Joseph D. Sytek of Epping, Martin J. Sytek of Raymond; one aunt, Kathryn McKay of Sudbury, Mass.; a niece and a nephew.

He was predeceased by a son John Baker.

BAKER - Edwin R. "Ed" Baker, 71, of 19 Appledore Avenue, Exeter, died Oct. 19, 2002. An informal celebration of his life will be held in the Stratham Community Church, Emery Lane, Stratham, Wednesday at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter, Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Family flowers only. Private burial will be in the Maple Lane Cemetery, Stratham. If desired donations may be made to the Friends of the Exeter Recreation Department, 32 Court Street, Exeter, NH 03833 to benefit local children's fishing needs.

Peggy L. Desmond

ROCKLEDGE, Fla. - Peggy L. Desmond, 76, of Rockledge, formerly of Portsmouth, N.H., died Oct. 20 at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, Fla.

A native Texan, she was born to Clarence M. and Ella Mae Hasley in Tuscola, Texas, on July 18, 1926. A retired bookkeeper, she resided in Rockledge since 1990, having moved to Florida from Portsmouth, N.H.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Barbara Monahan. She is survived by her husband of more than 48 years, Chief Master Sgt. (Ret.) Donald D. Desmond; a daughter, Carol Ann Wollmann of Vincentown, N.J.; a son, William A. Desmond of Shelton, Conn.; a sister, Helen Griffin of Mullin, Texas; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Interment will be at the Fort Sam Houston Military Cemetery, San Antonio, Texas.

Constance B. Crowley

HAMPTON - Constance B. Crowley, 89, of Burgundy Drive, died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002 at the Exeter Hospital.

She was born in Melrose, Mass., Feb. 22, 1913 the daughter of the late Richard Herbert and Grace Worth (Burrell) Bennett.

She was a graduate of Melrose, High School with the Class of 1930 and from Wellesley College, Wellesley, Mass., in 1934.

She resided in Hampton since 1976 coming from Marblehead, Mass., and prior to that was long time resident of Lexington, Mass. She was a lifelong summer resident of Martha's Vineyard which she enjoyed so very much.

She was a charter member of the New Covenant Church of the Hamptons, enjoyed sailing and was a former member of the Boston Yacht Club in Marblehead, was past president of the Boston-Wellesley College Club and volunteered at the Simmes Hospital Gift Shop while living in Arlington.

She was the wife of the late Herbert L. Crowley, Jr. who died in 1979 and was predeceased by a brother, R. Arnold Bennett of Somerset, Mass.

Family members include two sons, David B. Crowley of Grafton, Mass., and Richard H. Crowley of East Wallingford, Vt.; one daughter, Sandra C. VanNess of Medfield, Mass.; eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren and three nieces.

CROWLEY - Constance B. Crowley, 89, of Burgundy Drive, Hampton, died Oct. 19, 2002. Services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 1 p.m. in the New Covenant Church of the Hamptons, North Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired donations may be made to the New Covenant Church of the Hamptons, Building Fund, 8 Hobbs Road, North Hampton, NH 03862. Assistance with the arrangements is by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Mary T. Moulton

HAMPTON - Mary T. Moulton, 54, of 8 Colonial Circle, died Sunday, October 20, 2002 at her home.

She was born in Kingston, N.Y., Nov. 17, 1947 the daughter of Alice M. (Fenton) Driscoll of Kingston, N.Y. and the late Arthur M. Driscoll.

She was a graduate of St. Ursuluas Academy in Kingston and attended New Paltz College in New Paltz, N.Y.

For the past nine years she was employed as a Realtor for Prudential Rush Realty and also served as the personal administrative assistant to Kathleen K. Rush.

A resident of Hampton for the past 10 years, coming from Westbrook, Maine, she was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church and was a member of the National Association of Realtors.

She was the wife of Lyndol D. Moulton for 28 years.

In addition to her husband and mother, family members include one daughter, Jaime M. Moulton of Hampton; two step-sons, Jeffrey S. Moulton, Brian J. Moulton, of Hampton; two brothers, Arthur M. Driscoll of Kingston, N.Y., and John J. Driscoll of Raleigh, N.C.; three nieces and two nephews.

MOULTON - Mary T. Moulton, 54, of 8 Colonial Circle, Hampton, died Oct.20, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton, Wednesday at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. Donald Linton Ferguson

EXETER - Donald Linton Ferguson, 91, of Exeter, N.H., died on Oct. 15, 2002 at Langdon Place of Exeter, where he made his home for the last year of his life.

He was born Feb. 14, 1911, in Portland, Maine, the son of Robert Burns Ferguson and Mae (Irving) Ferguson. He attended schools in Portland and graduated from Portland High School in 1929. He continued his education for a number of years, attending Northeastern Business School and Brown and Sharp.

He lived with his family in Providence, R.I., and Rehoboth, Mass., for a dozen years, moved to Rollingsford, N.H. in 1953, and then to Exeter in 1959, where he lived until his death.

He was predeceased by his wife, the late Olive Grover (Poliy) Ferguson, in Feb. 1995. He is survived by his sons, Alec of Kennebunkport, Maine, and Bruce Linton of Piedmont, S.C.; and by his grandchildren Shayna and Scott of Greenville, S.C., and Jason, of Atlanta, Ga.

He has a long and industrious life with many interests, among them canoeing, camping, hiking and gardening. An avid gardener, he often maintained his crop well into the winter season. At his former home at 36 Lincoln. St., he grew an apple tree onto which he grafted seven different kinds of apples. He was an active person throughout his life. As a lad he had his own paper route on Munjoy Hill in Portland, and ramined active in the Boy Scouts for 20 years. He was also an active Mason for 70 years. He was a member of the Exeter Congregational Church. He enjoyed reading and was also an accomplished writer and remained for many years a member of the Seacoats Writers Club, which met regularly in Maine. He maintained a fierce interest in his Scottish heritage and studied Gaelic weekly. He traveled to Scotland occassionally and also enjoyed local jaunts with his family to the Highland Games in Brunswick, Maine.

He was a fine example of the power of independent spirit and took great pride in his family and their origins. He remained cheerful and outgoing throughout it life, enoying many friendships and setting a courageous example to all around him. He will be missed by his friends and family.

Aron L. Stanwood

HAMPTON - Aron L. Stanwood, 26, of 19 Tower Drive, died Friday, Oct. 18, 2002 at the Boston Medical Center, Boston, MA of injuries sustained in an industrial accident which occurred on Oct. 14, 2002.

He was born in Portsmouth, August 4, 1976 the son of Norman F. and Beverly A. (Marsh) Stanwood of Hampton.

Aron attended Hampton schools and was a graduate of Winnacunnet High School

STANWOOD - Aron L. Stanwood, 26, of 19 Tower Drive, Hampton died Oct. 18, 2002. Services will be held in the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, Wednesday at 1 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton.

Foy (Bryant) Carpenter

PORTSMOUTH - Foy (Bryant) Carpenter, 92, beloved wife mother died Saturday, Oct. 19 at Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth. Her devoted husband of 75 years, Marion, was at her bedside.

Foy was born in Shreveport, La., in 1910 into a family of six children who have all predeceased her. Her father, the Rev. G.W. Bryant, moved the family to west Texas, where she met and married Marion Carpenter.

During her late teens, Foy sang in the church choir, and became known for her rich alto harmony and her natural ability to read music on sight. Her talents came to the attention of the famous Stamps quartet, who asked her join their gospel tour. Foy chose to stay at home and devote her life to her church and her family.

The Carpenters have lived in Portsmouth since 1997.

The couple was recently featured in a Portsmouth Herald newspaper article about successful marriages and families.

"I thank the good Lord every morning," Marion Carpenter told the reporter. "What a life we’ve had together."

Other than her husband, Marion, Foy leaves her son, Wayne and his wife, Norma of Atlanta, Ga.; her daughter, Jane Lapriore and her husband, Jerry of Portsmouth; and her son-in-law, Ron Wilcox of Dallas. She was predeceased by her daughter Norma Wilcox of Dallas. Grandchildren include Barry Boteler of Oklahoma City, Jaime Miller of Dallas, Lisa Otting of Rossville, Ga., Eric Carpenter of Atlanta, Sara Lapriore, St. Petersburg, Fla., Mark Lapriore of Los Angeles, Justin Lapriore of Seattle, and Lisa Lapriore of Newmarket. Great grandchildren include Elizabeth Boteler, Abby Boteler, Stevie and Scottie Miller of Dallas; Michael, Rhys and Matthew Otting of Rossville, Ga.; and Tyler O'Neil of Rumney, N.H.

CARPENTER - Foy (Bryant) Carpenter, 92, of 928 South St., Portsmouth, died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002. Funeral services will be held at Middle Street Baptist Church in Portsmouth at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 23. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, Tuesday 5-7 p.m. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Edgewood Centre Recreation Fund, 928 South St, Portsmouth, NH 03801 or to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Ananias a. Bickford

HAMPTON - Ananias a. Bickford, 80, formerly of 6 Ruth Lane, passed away early Sunday morning at Portsmouth Regional Hospital in Portsmouth. Born in Seabrook on Jan. 9, 1922, he was the son of the late Arthur and Plumy (Janvrin) Bickford. he was the husband of the late Irene (Senechal) Bickford, who passed away in 2000.

A lifelong resident of the New Hampshire Seacoast, he was an auto mechanic for many years at the Ross Garage on Hampton Beach, of which he and his father were proprietors. He was also a movie projectionist for many years.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy and was one of the many that arrived in amphibious vehicles on the beaches of Normandy during the D-Day invasion. He was a member of the American Legion of Hampton.

He is survived by two sons, Bradley A. Bickford, of Boca Raton, Fla., and Brian D. Bickford of Irving, Texas; one sister, Colleen Hollen of Auburn, N.H.; and many nieces and nephews.

BICKFORD - Ananias A. Bickford, 80, died Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24 at the Four Corner Advent Christian Church on Railroad Avenue in Seabrook. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Amesbury, Mass. Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at the E.V. Jutras & Sons Funeral Home, 118 Friend St., Amesbury. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

FERGUSON - Donald Linton Ferguson, 91, of Exeter, N.H., died on Oct. 15, 2002. A memorial service will be held on Oct. 26 at the Exeter Congregational Church at 11 a.m. Arrangements are by Brewitt Funeral Services of Exeter. A private interment will be held in the Evergreen Cemetery in South Portland, Maine. His family asks that donations be made in his name to the Portland Observatory, in care of Greater Portland Landmarks, 165 State St., Portland, Maine, 04101-3797.

Larry M. Riley

MIDLAND, Pa. - Larry M. Riley, 55, died Tuesday evening, Oct. 15, 2002, in his home, surrounded by his family.

Born Jan. 6, 1947, in Richmond, Va., he was a son of Lessie Anne Pemberton Ramsdell of Kittery, Maine, and the late Roger Ramsdell. He attended school in Portsmouth, N.H., in the 1960s and ’70s.

He was an assistant manager of CoGo’s in Rochester after retiring from the U.S. Navy in 1986 after 22 years.

He was a member of the Christian Assembly Church, Ohioville.

He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Edna M. Phillips Riley; four sons and a daughter-in-law, Steven Prop at home, Michael and Kim Prop of Ellwood City, and Shawn Riley and Shane Riley of Fall River, Mass.; a brother and sister-in-law, Stephen and Mona Ramsdell of Maine; four grandchildren, Randy and Andrew Prop and Savannah and Tyler Riley; and several nieces and nephews, Brandon, Jessica, Ann Marie and Cory Ramsdell.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth Maury Ramsdell and Roger Dean Ramsdell.

Private interment will take place in Highland Cemetery, Ohioville.
