Alma L. Belanger

EXETER - Alma L. Belanger, 94, formerly of 41 South St., died Friday, Oct. 25, 2002 at the Rockingham County Nursing Home, Brentwood.

A lifelong resident of Exeter, she was born here March 13, 1908, the daughter of the late Doric and Emma (Nichols) Baillargeon.

Mrs. Belanger was a spinner and worked for many years for the Exeter Manufacturing Company. She was a communicant of St. Michaels Church and enjoyed sewing, knitting, and crocheting.

Family members include three sons, Louis T. Belanger of Dover; Donald F. Belanger of Raymond, and Nelson D. Belanger of North Conway; one daughter, Virginia C. Bernier of Exeter; 14 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren many great, great-grandchildren; one brother, Amede Baillargeon of Exeter; several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Belanger was predeceased by her husband, Theodore N. Belanger Jr., and a son, Edward D. Belanger.

BELANGER - Alma L. Belanger, 94, formerly of Exeter, died Oct. 25, 2002. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Michaels Church, Front Street, Exeter, Tuesday at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter, Monday from 6 to 8 p.m.. Burial will be in the Exeter Cemetery.

Edwin R. Baker

EXETER - Edwin R. "Ed" Baker, 71, of 19 Appledore Ave., died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002 at Sunbridge of Exeter.

He was born Dec. 24, 1930 in Detroit, Mich., the son of the late Willis A. and Ann (White) Baker. He resided in the seacoast for most of his life.

Mr. Baker was raised in Epping and was a graduate of Watson Academy and the University of New Hampshire with the Class of 1952.

He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and while serving in the reserves was promoted to the rank of Captain.

Mr. Baker was employed by the former Exeter Banking Company working over the years in every department of the bank. He retired as senior vice president after 40 years of service.

He was a member of the Star in the East Lodge #59 F.& A.M. of Exeter, Scottish Rite Body Valley of Nashua; was a member of the Exeter Rotary Club; member and past president of both the Exeter Chamber of Commerce and Junior Chamber; and treasurer of the Eventide Nursing Home at the time of his death. He also served as an instructor for the American Institute of Banking for many years.

Mr. Baker enjoyed many fishing trips with his close friends, where he enjoyed serving as chef. His fishing grounds of choice were in Maine.

He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Sylvia (Peaslee) Baker of Exeter; two sons, Peter Baker of Newmarket and David Baker of East Kingston; one daughter, Julie Stevens of Brentwood; their mother, Betsy N. Baker of Brentwood; one step-daughter, Virginia F. Lalley of Ironton, Mich.; two step-sons, Joseph D. Sytek of Epping and Martin J. Sytek of Raymond; one aunt, Kathryn McKay of Sudbury, Mass.; seven grandsons; and a niece and nephew.

Mr. Baker was predeceased by a son, John Baker.

Visiting hours will be Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter. An informal celebration of Mr. Bakers life will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Stratham Community Church, Emery Lane, Stratham. Private burial will be in the Maple Lane Cemetery, Stratham.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Friends of the Exeter Recreation Department, 32 Court St., Exeter 03833 to benefit local childrens fishing needs.

Winona M. Parsons

KITTERY, Maine - A funeral for Winona M. "Winnie" Parsons of Kittery, who died on Oct. 16, 2002 in Portsmouth, was held on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002 at her church, the First Congregational Church at Kittery Point, with the Rev. Robert D. Witham officiating.

Rev. Witham offered a greeting to all in attendance, followed by a unison prayer and readings from scripture, along with a homily and a commendation.

Fond words of remembrance, were offered by her children and other family members, as well as neighbors and friends.

Those in attendance sang some of Winnies favorite hymns, including "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art," accompanied on the organ by Ms. Audrey Adams, the church organist. A solo was performed by a dear friend and neighbor, Barbara Hall, who sang "On Eagles Wings."

All followed in procession to Sagamore Cemetery in Portsmouth, where her grandchildren and nephew acted as pallbearers and Rev. Witham offered words of prayer and the 23rd psalm.

All were invited to a time of sharing and remembrance at the church parish hall. Arrangements were entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Edwin R. Baker

EXETER - The funeral for Edwin R. Baker was held Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002. Due to a typesetting error, his obituary appeared again in Sundayfs paper. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused his family and the funeral home.

Ella A. Nuttle

PORTSMOUTH - Ella A. Nuttle of 245 Middle St., Portsmouth, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a brief illness. She was the widow of Andrew T. Nuttle Sr.

She was born June 21, 1917, in Kittery, Maine, the daughter of Ezra and Bernice (Vondal) Pinkham. She attended schools in both Portsmouth and Kittery, Maine. Prior to her marriage in 1942, she was a short-order cook in local restaurants.

She is survived by two daughters, Esther J. Polcharsky of Las Vegas, Nev., and Elizabeth J. Herman of Magazine, Ark.; two sons, Andrew T. Nuttle Jr. of Magazine, Ark., and Ernest R. Nuttle of Somersworth; one brother, Hollis Pinkham of Portsmouth; one sister, Hazel Moulton of Dover; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her best friend, Jade the Cat. She is predeceased by her brother, Maurice Vondal, and her sisters Helen Evans and Hope E. Pinkham.

NUTTLE - Ella A. Nuttle of Portsmouth died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a brief illness. Calling hours will be from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine. Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, in the funeral home chapel with burial to follow in Orchard Grove Cemetery, Kittery. Donations to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, OH 44720 have been requested. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home.

Michael P. Vallier

LEE - Michael P. Vallier, 47, of 3 Thornton Lane, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at his home after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Portsmouth on Oct. 24, 1955, a son of John P. and Emily B. (Elwell) Vallier of Hampton. Raised in Hampton, he had resided for several years in Lee.

He was the division sales manager for the Harlequin Publishing Co. of Toronto, Canada. He was a 1974 graduate of Winnacunnet High School in Hampton and a 1978 graduate of Plymouth State College.

In addition to his parents, family members include his wife of 18 years, Elizabeth (Duffy) Vallier, and two sons, M. Patrick Vallier and Benjamin J. Vallier, all of Lee; a brother, John P. Vallier of Hampton; a sister, Donna J. Cresta of Chelmsford, Mass.; many members of his wifefs family; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

VALLIER - Michael P. Vallier, 47, of 3 Thornton Lane, Lee, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002. Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the First Congregational Church, 127 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Interment will follow in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton. Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory of Hampton.

Marian S. Beals

YORK, Maine - Marian S. Beals, 75, of Plaisted Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at York Harbor Health Care at Sentry Hill.

She was born in York on July 19, 1927, daughter of Earl B. and Alice (Plaisted) Smith, and graduated from York High School. She attended classes at the Dean Junior College in Franklin, Mass., and Nasson College in Springvale.

She was the assistant branch manager for 40 years at the Maine National Bank in York Village, retiring in 1988. While working at the bank, she won a bank-sponsored trip to Hawaii.

She was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church in York. She was a charter member of the York Volunteer Ambulance Association and served as the treasurer for many years. She loved animals and was very concerned about their care in animal shelters.

She was the widow of John Wesley Beals, who died in 1991.

Members of her family include her sister, Grace and Chester Trafton of York; her brother, Earl B. and Barbara Smith of York; two nieces, Denise and Donald Wilford of York, and Coleen and Robert Coughlin and their two children, Olivia and Thomas Coughlin, all of York.

BEALS - Marian S. Beals, widow of John W. Beals, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, in York, Maine. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday in the First Parish Congregational Church, 180 York St., York. Interment will be in the First Parish Cemetery. There are no visiting hours. Memorial donations may be made to the Animal Welfare Society, P.O. Box 43, West Kennebunk, ME 04094. Arrangements are by Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Thelma B. Perkins

KITTERY, Maine - Thelma B. Perkins, 100, of Kittery, died Oct. 28, 2002, at The Harbor House in York, Maine.

She was born in Nova Scotia, Canada, on Aug. 25, 1902, the daughter of Lindsay L. and Florence (Hines) Hardy.

She was predeceased by her son, Allan Bradford Christie, her first husband, Jacob Christie, and her second husband, Alton Perkins.

Mrs. Perkins is survived by a brother, Delbert Hardy, of Kittery, Maine, and several nieces and nephews.

PERKINS - Thelma B. Perkins, 100, of Kittery, Maine, died Oct. 28, 2002. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Heald Funeral Home, 580 Main St., Springvale, Maine. To leave condolences for the family, read an online obituary, or for more information, visit www.healdfuneral.com.

Doris L. OfBrien

HAMPTON - The funeral for Doris L. OfBrien, 87, of 10 Arbor Drive, Dover, who died Oct. 25, 2002, was held Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. Services were conducted in the United Methodist Church. The Rev. Carroll C. Moore, pastor, officiated. Anne Young was organist. Burial followed in the Holbrook Cemetery, Candia, with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Moore.

Alma L. Belanger

EXETER - The funeral for Alma L. Belanger, 94, formerly of 41 South St., was held Tuesday from the Stockbridge Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial was concelebrated at St. Michaelfs Church. The Rev. Marc B. Drouin, pastor, was the principal celebrant, assisted by the Rev. Michael S. Taylor, pastor of St. Joseph Parish, Epping. The readings were offered by Donald Szotak. Organist was Denise Kelly, and soloist was Jennifer Gaines. Altar servers were Joseph Latour, Keith Adams and Thaddeus Klemarczyk. Burial followed in the Exeter Cemetery with committal prayers by the Rev. Drouin. Pallbearers were Mark Belanger, Gerome Belanger, Brian Belanger, Phil Belanger, Tim Cavanaugh and Ted Cooke.

Myron M. "Buster" Thayer

YORK, Maine - Myron M. "Buster" Thayer, 72, of Scituate Road, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at York Hospital from heart failure.

He was born in Waltham, Mass., the son of Myron F. and Doratha (Meader) Thayer, and was a 1947 graduate of Newton, (Mass.) High School.

He attended Boston College from 1947 to 1949. He served in the U.S. Navy as a pilot from 1949 to 1954 and retired from the Reserves as a commander in 1971. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1958.

Mr. Thayer was employed as a metallurgist at Ion Physics in Burlington, Mass; W.H. Nichols/Parker Hannifin in Waltham, Mass. and Fluid Power in Southborough, Mass., retiring in 1995. He had resided in Reading, Mass. for many years, moving to York in 1995.

Buster was a member of the Union Congregational Church in York Beach where he enjoyed doing volunteer work. He was an avid exerciser and health enthusiast and enjoyed woodworking.

In addition to his wife of 48 years, Joyce Evelyn (Matthews) Thayer of York, he is survived by one daughter, Deborah Hernandez and her husband, Sergio of San Antonio, Texas; four sons, Mark Thayer and his wife, Andrea of South Hamilton, Mass., Scott Thayer and his wife, Debra of Reading, Mass., Trevor Thayer and his wife, Lori of Kittery, Maine, and Glenn Thayer and his wife, Brenda of Plymouth, Mass.; and 13 grandchildren.

THAYER - Myron M. "Buster" Thayer, of Scituate Road, York, Maine, died Oct. 28, 2002, in York, Maine. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, in the Union Congregational Church of York Beach, Church Street, York Beach. There will be no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the York Community Food Pantry, P.O. Box 243, York, ME 03909. Arrangements are by the Lucas-Eaton Funeral Home, York.

LEE - Services for Michael P. Vallier, 47, husband of Elizabeth (Duffy) Vallier, of 3 Thornton Lane, were held Tuesday at the First Congregational Church in Hampton. The Rev. Mike Mulberry, pastor of the United Church of Christ, North Hampton, officiated. Alicia DiDonato was flutist, and George Carlisle delivered the eulogy. Interment followed in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton, with committal services by the Rev. Mulberry.

Priscilla J. Wade

EDGEWATER, Fla. - Priscilla J. Wade, 75, of Fernald Street, Edgewater, Fla., died Tuesday at Halifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach.

Born in Portsmouth, Mrs. Wade moved to Florida in 1993, from Ipswich, Mass., having been a winter visitor since 1987.

A homemaker, Wade enjoyed gardening, cooking and sewing. Family was her great love.

Mrs. Wade is survived by her devoted husband, Ed; three sons, Robert and Michael of Ipswich, and Stephen of Leominster, Mass; two daughters, Linda Smolack of Seabrook and Lynne Rawak of Columbus, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

WADE - Priscilla J. Wade, 75, of Fernald Street, Edgewater, Fla., died Oct. 29, 2002. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., on Saturday, at Settle-Wilder Edgewater Chapel with the Rev. John Barry, of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, New Smyrna Beach, officiating. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home. Donations in Wadefs memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, Southeast Volusia County Unit, P.O. Box 266, New Smyrna Beach, FL 32170. Settle-Wilder Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 1620 Edgewater Drive, Edgewater, is in charge of arrangements.

Robert Francis Betts Jr.

DOVER - Robert Francis Betts Jr., 67, formerly of 7 Independence Drive, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at his residence, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born Feb. 18, 1935, in Brockton, Mass., he was the son of Robert F. Betts Sr., and Dorothy (Duffany) Betts.

A 20-year veteran, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean and Vietnam wars.

Mr. Bettsf passions were his family, his country and his boat.

He was employed as an Insurance Adjuster/Supervisor with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company.

In addition to his wife of 47 years, Mildred "Judy" (McAdams) Betts, he is survived by his mother of Dover; three sons, Glenn Betts of Berwick, Maine, Greggory Betts of Falmouth, Mass., and Geoffrey Betts of Hooksett; four daughters, Michelle Register and Dianne Betts of Dover, Jennifer McLaughlin of Rochester and Marianne Campbell of Saucier, Miss.; a brother, Peter Betts of Manchester, Maine.; 18 grandchildren and a large extended family, primarily in Cape Cod, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

BETTS - Robert Francis Betts Jr., 67, formerly of 7 Independence Drive, Dover, died Oct. 29, 2002. Relatives and friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Avenue, Dover. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at the St. Joseph Church, 150 Central Avenue, Dover, with the Rev. Robert F. Cole, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow with military honors in St. Maryfs Cemetery, Dover.
