John E. Thompson Jr.

HAMPTON FALLS - John E. Thompson Jr., 79, former president and chief executive officer of the Merrimac Paper Company in Lawrence, Mass., died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002 at his home in Hampton Falls.

Jack, as he was known by his friends and family, was an amazing man who loved life. When his peers described him, they used the words "honest," "committed," and "a man of quiet dignity and integrity."

He was the former chairman of the Business-Education Collaborative in Lawrence, having served three years. He became interested in the program initially as a result of a need for reliable personnel at his business at Merrimac Paper. He decided to seek a solution to the problem. His search led him the Business-Education Collaborative, which placed business people into the Lawrence classrooms as mentors for the area’s future employees.

His involvement with the Summer Jobs Program at Lawrence High School gave students the opportunity to explore vocational options in the area business community, and develop a strong work ethic, good attitude, and receive encouragement to earn a high school diploma.

Jack saw a further need to extend and expand the programs to reach those students beginning their educational career. As a result of his and the program’s efforts, the community saw a marked improvement in the quality of students graduating.

He ended his three-year term as chairman to assume the role of president of the Greater Lawrence Chamber of Commerce. Having been a charter member since 1961, he served on the board since 1983 and was elected vice-president in 1986 before being elected president. Once said of him by a former board member, "Jack is really liked and he is one of the unsung heroes. Thompson is a trooper. He is a hard worker; call him and he responds every time."

In addition, he also served as the past president of the Greater Lawrence Council of Churches and the Greater Lawrence Ecumenical Area Ministry - GLEAM. He is also remembered for the influence and direction having served as a trustee on the board of directors of several area banks.

Jack was born in Staten Island, N.Y. on June 23, 1923. His mother died before he was a year old and was raised by his 62-year-old grandmother. Jack always said, "She was the most influential motivating force in my life. She was a good woman, a good Christian woman." His life was to be a living testimonial to the impact she had.

A Marine Corps veteran of World War II, he served in the 1st Marine Division at Guadalcanal, as well as other areas of the South and Central Pacific.

After the war, Jack married the former Florence Bell of Staten Island in 1948. He graduated from Pace University in New York in 1954 with a bachelor’s degree in business and accounting, and began a six-year career working for the New York accounting firm Coopers & Lybrand.

He moved his family to Andover, Mass. in 1961 to begin 30-plus years’ employment with Merrimac Paper Company. The stability of the company’s future was questionable, but through dedication and hard work, the company’s growth and prosperity was solidified, making Merrimac Paper a strong entity in the Greater Lawrence area.

He taught Sunday school for 40 years. His deep Christian faith was his foundation for life. He applied his convictions to not only his business and civic careers, but to every facet of his life. He was very active in the church community, as well. He served as senior warden, superintendent of Sunday school as well as many other positions while at Christ Church in Andover, before moving to Hampton Falls in 1989.

Described as a man for all seasons, Jack was an avid sportsman. He enjoyed fly-fishing at his camp on Parmachenee Lake, in the Androscoggin River and Rangely Mountain Region of Maine. His love of the sport took him yearly to the remote region of Iliamna, Alaska to experience nature’s finest fly-fishing.

At 61 years of age, always an adventurer, he got his pilot’s license. He loved flying his plane over the New England skies.

When the first snowflake of winter would fall, his wife said, "He could be found waxing his skis." He was an excellent skier, having taken up the winter sport at age 45. Says son Reed, "He could maneuver the slopes like a 20-year-old. Skiing was a challenge, not for my dad, but for me. I had a difficult time keeping up with him."

In addition to his wife, Florence, he is survived by his son, Reed P. Thompson of Winchester, Mass.; three daughters, Patricia Trudel of Meredith, Pamela Coco of Pensacola, Fla., and Barbara Spinney of Townsend, Mass.; seven grandchildren, a great grandson, several nieces, nephews, and a cousin.

THOMPSON - John E. Thompson, Jr. of Hampton Falls died Dec. 6, 2002. Services will be held in the Exeter Assembly of God, Hampton Falls Road (Rt. 88), Exeter, NH on Wednesday at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. Private burial will be at Oaklawn Cemetery, Hampton Falls. Lloyd Tibbetts

PORTSMOUTH - Lloyd Tibbetts, 59, a distinguished veteran of the Portsmouth Police Department, died unexpectedly Thursday afternoon, Dec. 5, 2002. While working with his wife, Diane, on their Meadow Mist Farm wildlife refuge, Lloyd suffered a massive circulatory failure.

A Brentwood native, Lloyd graduated from Sanborn Seminary in Kingston. He attained the rank of specialist 5 in the U.S. Army, serving in Germany.

He was an officer with the Tilton Police Department before beginning his career in 1966 with Portsmouth’s department.

His life was juxtaposed with a passion for both the safety of people and wildlife and land management. Portsmouth Police Chief Brad Russ said that the news of Tibbetts’ death sent shock waves through the entire Police Department:

"We’re just reeling right now. Everyone in the department is just devastated by the news. Lloyd was one of my first partners and he was one of the best street cops and ambassadors for this city I’ve ever known.

"He was a model police officer who touched so many lives in this community. It’s a tragic loss for everyone who had the honor of knowing and working with him."

Bill Mortimer, a longtime veteran of the department and former police commissioner, described Tibbetts as "a great cop and a good, decent family man."

"He was a professional and a credit to his department. I was shocked to hear the news, and I feel terrible for his family. It’s a sad time for all of us."

Lloyd uniquely related to nature. He knew every square inch of his woods, naming trails, noticing idiosyncrasies of wildlife and identifying indigenous plants and trees, as well as those unusual varieties. He opened up land for waterfowl habitats and worked to adjust water levels on his land to attract and sustain wildlife populations.

Lloyd’s organizing principle for life was the Golden Rule. He often said that life was too short to hold a grudge. Lloyd believed in honoring his wife, family and friends, and he drew much meaning and purpose from them. He was a tremendous storyteller, whose humorous stories contained greater ideals for the listener to benefit from.

Lloyd is survived by his wife of 34 years, Diane (Miller); daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Michael Young of Sidney, Maine; daughter Amanda of Barrington; one grandson, Aaron, of Sidney, Maine; parents Lloyd Sr. and Eleanor (Smart) Tibbetts of Exeter; one sister, Anne Dooley of Cambridge, Mass.; one brother, John D. Tibbetts of Brentwood; several nieces, nephews, many close friends and his faithful companion Bailey.

TIBBETTS - Lloyd Tibbetts, 59, died Nov. 9, 2002. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Lloyd’s memory to Brentwood Fire and Rescue, 148 Crawley Falls Road, Brentwood, NH 03833, or to the Brentwood Conservation Commission, for the Conservation Fund, 1 Dalton Road, Brentwood, NH 03833. Calling hours will be held Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter.
