William P. Sprague

EXETER - William P. Sprague, 93, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, after a brief illness.

He was born Nov. 21, 1907, in Medford, Mass., the son of Thomas R. and Alida (Collins) Sprague.

He was a graduate of Medford High School and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Sprague began his career with Sprague Brothers, a family wholesale meat firm. He moved to Exeter in the 1930s to represent the firm in New Hampshire and Maine. After the company closed in the 1940s he worked in the wholesale food industry with many companies including Hicks & Hodges in Boston.

He played baseball with the Medford "Dirty Shirts."

He is survived by his wife, Alice (Taylor) Sprague of St. George, Utah; one son, Thomas R. Sprague of Cambridge, Mass.; three stepdaughters, Gail Gallagher of Racine, Wis., Earleen Hutchinson of Islesboro, Maine, and Lucille Drown of Mesquite, Nev.; and one stepson, Roland Rattee of Gutenberg, N.J.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Lena Marie (Plourde) Sprague, who died in 1951.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be in Exeter Cemetery. There will be a reception following the burial at the Exeter Inn, 90 Front St., Exeter.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, N.H. Chapter, 10 Ferry St., Suite 419, Concord, NH 03301.

Margaret M. Wilson

EPPING - Margaret M. Wilson, 79, of 290 Calef Highway, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at her home after a period of failing health.

She was born Feb. 14, 1921, in Reading, Mass., the daughter of the late Harry and Marcella (Donavan) Larson. She was raised in Reading, Mass., and resided in Stoneham, Mass., for 30 years before moving to Epping 17 years ago.

She was a graduate of the high school in Reading.

Mrs. Wilson was employed in the sales department at Cummings in Stoneham for 10 years.

The widow of John E. Wilson Jr., her husband of 47 years who died March 15, 2000, she is survived by one daughter and her husband, Barbara and Charles Pierce of Burlington, Mass.; one son, Paul Wilson of Gardner, Mass.; two grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Larson of Reading and Elizabeth Wilson of Florida.

She was predeceased by one sister, Virginia Lewis.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Brewitt Funeral Home, 8 Pleasant St., Epping. Burial will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Reading, at a later date.

Francis E. Carey

HAMPTON - Francis E. Carey, 87, of 322 Winnacunnet Road, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, in Exeter Hospital.

He was born May 21, 1913, in Norton, Vt., the son of the late Charles L. and Cora (Bennett) Carey.

He was a graduate of Canaan (Vt.) High School, N.H. Business College, Concord, and attended the University of New Hampshire while employed full time in the athletic department.

Mr. Carey was supervisory administrative officer of the planning department at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard retiring in 1968 after 32 years of service. After his retirement he was employed by Tobey & Merrill Insurance Co., and worked for several years as a supervisor for the Department of Transportation at the Hampton toll station.

He was a 50-year member and past master of Star in the East Lodge No. 59 F&AM, Exeter; a dual charter member of St. James Lodge No. 102 F&AM, Hampton; served as district deputy grand master of the 1st Masonic District of the Grand Lodge of N.H. in 1970 and 1971; was president and long time director of the Exeter Masonic Association; presiding officer of Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Portsmouth-Dover; a member of the N.H. Consistory Valley of Nashua; the East Gate Club of Seabrook; the Seacoast Bridge Club at Seabrook Community Center; and a member of the Naval Civilian Administrators.

He was the recipient of the Major General John Sullivan meritorious service medal and was made an honorary member of the Supreme Council 33rd degree in Boston in 1969.

The widower of Helen (Gill) Carey, his wife of 55 years who died in 1992, he is survived by one niece, Geraldine Cross of Canaan, Vt.; and several grandnieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one son, Dr. Peter W. Carey who died in 1990. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in High Street Cemetery, Hampton.

Memorial donations may be made to the Masonic Home, 813 Beech St., Manchester, NH 03101.

Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Teresa E. Dawley

RYE - Teresa E. Dawley, 81, of 141 Wallis Road, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Webster at Rye Nursing Home after a period of failing health.

She was born Feb. 24, 1919, in Portsmouth and was the adoptive daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Burkhardt. She was a lifelong resident of Portsmouth and Rye.

Mrs. Dawley was a baby sitter for many families in the Seacoast.

She was a communicant of St. Theresa Church; a member of the Rye Over 55 Club and the Third Friday Club.

The widow of Frank L. Dawley, she is survived by two sons and their wives, David A. and Joan Dawley of Rye and Richard A. and Nancy Dawley of Dallas, Tex.; and four grandchildren.

She was predeceased by an infant daughter, Brenda Dawley.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach. Burial will be in Central Cemetery, Rye.

Memorial donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Janis L. Doucette

SOUTH HAMILTON, Mass. - Janis L. Doucette, 27, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, in Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston.

She was born in Lynn, Mass., the daughter of Ernest Doucette of Stratham and Vina Cook of South Hamilton.

She was a 1991 graduate of Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School.

Ms. Doucette was the evening production supervisor for the Salem Evening News for the past five years.

She enjoyed traveling, sports and outdoor activities, and was an organ donor at the time of her death.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her fiancé, Larry Jacobs of Beverly, Mass.; her stepfather, Richard Cook of South Hamilton; her stepmother, Jane Doucette of Stratham; one sister, Christine Kraner of South Bend, Ind.; her paternal grandfather, Ernest Doucette Sr. of Newburyport, Mass.; five uncles; two aunts; three stepsisters, Elizabeth "Betsy" Woods of Montreal, Que., and Laurie Karas and Amy Kearney, both of Beverly; and many cousins.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot St., Beverly.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be in Hamilton Cemetery.

William J. Gardner

EXETER - William J. Gardner, 80, of 7 Phinney Lane, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, in Exeter Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born Jan. 1, 1921, in Vernon, the son of the late Joseph F. and Mary (St. John) Gardner and had resided in Exeter for 80 years.

He attended the University of New Hampshire majoring in agriculture.

He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II serving in Okinawa, Japan, and was the recipient of the Purple Heart.

Mr. Gardner was a foreman with Sylvania Corp. of Exeter retiring in 1983.

He was a member of the Exeter Water and Sewer Committee.

Mr. Gardner was a 50 year member of the American Legion Post No. 32 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post of Exeter; a member of the Exeter Lions Club; and the Exeter Historical Society.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Anita (Cottrell) Gardner of Exeter; one brother, William A. Putnam of Deering; one stepbrother, Harry Putnam of Francestown; five sisters, Susie Wardenski and Josephine Crane, both of Hillsboro, Doris Slingsby of Orlando, Fla., Frances Cushing of Nashua and Roberta Adams of Antrim; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one sister, Sarah Olson of Hillsboro, who died December 12.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home, with the Rev. John Denson of Christ Church Episcopal, Exeter, officiating. Burial will follow in Exeter Cemetery.

Flowers are acceptable or memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Valerie J. Greenwood

KENSINGTON - Valerie J. (Lowry) Sargent Greenwood, 60, of 23 Osgood Road, died January 10, 2001, in Exeter Hospital after a lengthy illness.

She was born May 26, 1940, in Waterbury, Conn., the daughter of the late Robert and Geraldine (Staples) Lowry and had resided in Kensington for 31 years coming from Amesbury, Mass.

Mrs. Greenwood worked at the Seabrook Greyhound Track and had previously been the manager at the Richdale Store, Newburyport, Mass., for more than 20 years.

She enjoyed crafts, cooking, the beach and Plum Island.

She is survived by her husband, Richard W. Greenwood; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Holly Sargent of San Francisco, Colleen Soucie of Kensington, Candace and John Soucy of South Hampton and Barbara and Jess Claridge of Newmarket; six grandchildren; and a special friend, Melinda Cronin of Salisbury, Mass.

Funeral services were held Jan. 14, 2001, at Simplicity Burial & Cremation Services, Newburyport. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Newburyport.

Marian F. Ham

RYE - Marian F. Ham, 66, of 60 Garland Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at her home.

She was born Jan. 7, 1935, in Portsmouth, the daughter of the late Charles E. and Evelyn O. (Farrell) Ham.

Mrs. Ham enjoyed gardening, working with animals and helping people.

She is survived by two sons, Mark W. Bateman of Epping and Bruce C. Bateman of Dover; one daughter and her husband, Robin H. and David R. Heim of Exeter; one granddaughter; one sister, Hazel Hughes of Rye; one brother, Ronald S. Coker of Rochester; and several nieces, nephews and one cousin.

She was predeceased by one brother, James Ham.

Funeral services were held Monday in the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth.

Katherine A. MacLeod

HAMPTON - Katherine A. MacLeod, 86, of 777 Lafayette Road, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at her residence at the Partridge House.

She was born March 7, 1914, in Inverness, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, the daughter of Alexander and Margaret (Gillis) MacDougall. She immigrated to Boston in 1930 and resided in Dorchester, Natick, and Newton, Mass., moving to New Hampshire in 1974.

Mrs. MacLeod was considered a consultant in family studies with an honorary degree from the University of Cape Breton at Inverness.

The widow of John MacLeod, her husband of 51 years who died in 1984, she is survived by two sons, John A. MacLeod of Apple Valley, Minn., and William C. MacLeod of Naperville, Ill.; four daughters, Miriam Winston of Boston, Margaret Henry of Minagra, Nicaragua, Mary H. Corcoran of Hampton and Bonnie Jean MacLeod of Lonetree, Colo.; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one stepsister, Ann MacDougall of Nova Scotia; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by an infant daughter, Sheila, who died in 1942; two sons-in-law, Maynard Winston and Paul Corcoran; two sisters, Mary Ann and Mary Sarah; and three brothers, Colin, Angus and Alexander.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday in Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. Burial was in High Street Cemetery, Hampton.

Memorial donations may be made to The Giving Tree Foundation, P.O. Box 81273, Wellesley Hills, MA 02481.

Arrangements were by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.
