Helen D. Knowles

SEABROOK - Helen D. Knowles, 77, of 81 Railroad Ave., died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, in Boston Medical Center after a lengthy illness.

She was born March 2, 1925, in Seabrook, the daughter of the late Alton D. and Eliza B. (Eaton) Eaton.

Mrs. Knowles worked for the former Barr & Bloomfield Shoe Co. and in the shellfish business for many years.

She was a member of Rand Memorial Church, Seabrook; the Seabrook Happy Senior Citizens; and the Raymond E. Walton American Legion Post No. 70 Women's Auxiliary.

The widow of Russell S. Knowles, who died in 1961, she is survived by one son and his wife, Woodrow A. and Kathy Eaton of Seabrook; three daughters and their husbands, Audine B. and Blair Donahue and Cathy M. and George Stanley, all of Seabrook, and Liza L. and William Lennox of Rochester; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Arthur H. Eaton of Seabrook and Samuel L. Eaton and Franklin D. Eaton, both of Northwood; three sisters, Altina S. Eaton of Brentwood, Necia P. Thurlow of Seabrook and Dora L. Lounsbury of Merrimac, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Edward H. Smith

SEABROOK - Edward H. Smith, 58, of 56 Rocks Road, died Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, at his home.

He was born Aug. 20, 1944, in Merrimac, Mass., the son of the late Eugene and Hilda (Brault) Smith and had resided in Seabrook for 35 years.

He was a graduate of Pentucket Regional High School.

Mr. Smith was a machinist for the Henschel Corp. in Newburyport, Mass. for 27 years.

He was an avid chess player and was rated 16th in New England. He enjoyed camping, playing horseshoes, darts and fishing.

He played lead and bass guitar for 15 years with the former Natural Lights Band which dispersed in 1997.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Barbara D. (Walton) Smith; one daughter, Andrea Kibby of Barrington; one granddaughter; one brother, Charles Smith of Merrimac; three sisters, June Fisher of Haverhill, Mass., Susie Holmes of Raymond and Lillian McNeil of Billerica, Mass.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services were held Monday in the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Memorial donations may be made to Rockingham VNA & Hospice, 137 Epping Road, Exeter NH 03833 or to the American Brain Tumor Association, 2720 River Road, Des Plains, IL 60018.

Frances R. Witcomb

DOVER - Frances R. Witcomb, 73, of 6 Northway Circle, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, at the Dover Rehabilitation & Living Center.

She was born April 20, 1929, in Newburyport, Mass., the daughter of Randolph S. and Edna G. (Wood) Ackerman and had resided in Hampton before moving to Dover in 1980.

She was a 1947 graduate of Amesbury High School and received her associate's degree from Westbrook Junior College in 1949.

Mrs. Witcomb was a homemaker and self-employed seamstress.

She was a member and deaconess of Hope Community Church, Dover; a member of the Dover Durham Christian Woman's Club; the Strafford County Republican Committee; the Christian Coalition of America-Strafford County; secretary for the Abstinence Education Resource Institute; and treasurer of the N.H. Common Sense Conservatives-Coalition.

The widow of Charles W.H. "Bill" Witcomb, who died Aug. 19, she is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Sandra J. and Thomas Lafleur of Amherst and Constance L. and Richard Leavitt of Hampton; two stepdaughters, Susan K. Clancy and her husband Richard of Brewster, Mass., and Nancy J. Witcomb of West Hartford Conn.; two grandchildren; two step grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; one brother, Stewart E. Ackerman of Honeoye Falls, N.Y.; one sister, Patricia R. Millett of Whitman, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one brother, Donald A. Ackerman of Salisbury.

A memorial service for Mr. and Mrs. Witcomb will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Hope Community Church, 197 Sixth St., Dover, with the Rev. Steve Spearing, pastor, officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Gwen Spearing Scholarship Fund, c/o Hope Community Church, P.O. Box 1477, Dover, NH 03821-1477.

Arrangements are by the Tasker Funeral Home, Dover.

Esther G. Blake

HAMPTON - Esther G. Blake, 94, of 22 Tuck Road, formerly of Leavitt Road, died Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, at Seacoast Health Center.

She was born June 16, 1908, in Madison, the daughter of the late Sidney D. and Sylvia (Lyman) Gilman, moving to Hampton in 1952. She was a direct descendant of one of New Hampshire's founding families.

She was a 1926 graduate of Madison High School and a 1927 graduate of MacIntosh Business School, Haverhill, Mass.

Mrs. Blake was a bookkeeper in her family's business, The Gilman Brothers General Store in Madison for 25 years. Her family owned the store from 1893 until 1952.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Madison, where she was a pianist and soloist and was a member of the Rebekah Lodge in Madison.

The widow of Percy A. Blake, who died in 1968, she is survived by five nieces and one nephew.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Lyman Cemetery, Madison.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Frances B. Brangiel

NEWMARKET - Frances B. "Fay" Brangiel, 85, of Lamprey Street, died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002, at her home after a brief illness.

She was born Jan. 21, 1917, in Newmarket the daughter of Karol and Petronella (Bryla) Brongiel. She was a stitcher at Abbington and Timberland Shoe Co. and was a seamstress, sewing and doing alterations at her home.

She was a member of the American Citizens Club of Polish Descent; the Polish Women's Circle; and Groupa. She marched in the Memorial Day Parades with the Polish Women's Circle and collected and packaged clothes to be sent to Poland.

She was a communicant of St. Mary Church and was a member of the Robert G. Durgin American Legion Auxiliary Unit 67.

She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and working on crafts.

She is survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews and great-grandnieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket. American Legion Auxiliary Services will be held at 3:30 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Mary Church, Main St., Newmarket, with the Rev. John Finnigan, as celebrant. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Newmarket.

June L. Higgins

NORTH HAMPTON - June L. Higgins, 74, of 34 Granite Post Green, died Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, at the Edgewood Centre, Portsmouth.

She was born June 5, 1928, in Portsmouth, the daughter of the late Frank R. and Geraldine O. (Philbrick) Wilson. She resided in Rye for 64 years and in North Hampton for the past eight years.

She was a 1946 graduate of Hampton Academy.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Harold W. Higgins; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Deb and Tom Burwell of Newmarket, Patti and Jim Piper of Rye and Cindy Higgins of North Hampton; three sons and their wives, Bob and Diane Higgins of Hampton, Rick and Linda Higgins of Hampton Falls, and Jeffrey and Pamela Higgins of Rye; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, Frank R. Wilson Jr. of Apopka, Fla.; two sisters, Cici Perham of Rye and Wendy Robinette of Athens, W.V.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one grandson, Ben Piper.

Funeral services were held Thursday in Rye Congregational Church, Rye. Burial was in Central Cemetery, Rye.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Alice M. Jewell

EXETER - Alice M. Jewell, 91, of 277 Water St., formerly of Hayes Mobile Home Park, died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002, in Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

She was born Feb. 15, 1911, in Somerville, Mass., the daughter of the late Clarence A. and Charlotte (Storm) Beard and had resided in Exeter since 1936.

She was a 1930 graduate of Somerville High School and attended the evening program at McIntosh College, Dover.

Mrs. Jewell was a private duty nurse caring for the elderly for many years.

She was a member of United Methodist Church, Exeter; the Golden Age Club; and the Exeter Senior Citizens.

She was the widow of George E. Jewell, who died in 1960, and has no survivors.

Private burial was in Green Cemetery, Stratham.

Arrangements were by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Donald B. Kelley

SEABROOK - Donald B. Kelley, 91, of 81 Railroad Ave., died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002, in Exeter Hospital.

He was born July 25, 1911, in Lynn, Mass., the son of the late Norman L. and Rose R. (Riordan) Kelley. He had resided in Peabody, Mass., for many years moving to Seabrook in 1983.

Mr. Kelley was a sales representative in the photocopy machine business for many years.

The widower of Mabel M. (McAskill) Kelley, who died in 1995, he is survived by one son and his wife, Donald B. Jr. and Shirley Kelley of Londonderry; one daughter, Nancy Regan of Hudson; two grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by five brothers and two sisters.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 2 to 4, and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton.

Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Seabrook.

Doris E. Simspon

EXETER - Doris E. Simspon, 84, of 5 Auburn St., died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at Exeter Healthcare after a brief illness.

She was born June 11, 1918, in Exeter, the daughter of the late John and Ida (Moore) Noonan and was a lifelong resident of Exeter.

She was formerly a nurse practitioner at the Exeter Clinic.

She was a communicant of St. Michael Church, Exeter, and was a member of the Exeter Women's Club; past president of the Exeter Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary; and an active volunteer at Exeter Healthcare.

The widow of retired Exeter Fire Chief Ray Simspon Sr., she is survived by one son, Kensington Fire Department Chief Ray Simpson Jr. of Exeter; one daughter, Martha Simpson of Portsmouth; one granddaughter; one great-grandson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

There are no calling hours.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, with the Rev. David Lennox officiating. Burial will follow in Exeter Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Kensington Volunteer Fire Department, 124 Amesbury Road, Kensington, NH 03833.

Pauline L. Sterry

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. - Pauline Louise (Moore) Sterry, 71, died May 24, 2002.

Services will be held Sunday, Sept. 22, at 2 p.m. in Hampton United Methodist Church, 525 Lafayette Road, Hampton, with the Rev. Carroll Moore officiating.

A fellowship and refreshment time will be held in Carter Hall after the service.

Private graveside services will be held in High Street Cemetery.
