Stella Blaney

ROCKAWAY TWP. – Stella Blaney died on Thursday, August 11, 2011 at St. Vincent’s Nursing Home in Cedar Grove. She was 97.

Born in Bridgeport, CT, she moved to Rockaway Twp in 1949.

Mrs. Blaney worked at Warner Lambert in Morris Plains as a relocation specialist for over 25 years prior to retiring.

She was a parishioner of St. Cecilia’s Church in Rockaway and active in the Rosary Society.

She was predeceased by her husband Robert T. in 2001 and her daughter Stella U. in 2006.

She is survived two sons: Thomas of Warwick, NY and Robert of Deleware; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Cecilia Church, 70 Church St., Rockaway on Saturday, Aug. 13 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Cecilia cemetery. Arrangements by Whitham – Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: St. Cecilia’s Rosary Society.

Theodore "Teddy" Stern

ROCKAWAY – Theodore “Teddy” Stern died on Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at home. He was 22.

Born in Morristown, he lived in Rockaway for most of his life.

Teddy was a college student who enjoyed chess, basketball, tennis and playing video games. He was an avid reader, and he loved the ocean, especially the Shore.

He is survived his parents: David Stern and Pamela Brickman, his stepfather: Bruce Brickman, his brother: Justin Samek, and his two sisters: Aislynn and Courtney Stern.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 6 at 10:00 a.m. at the Whitham – Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway. Interment will follow at Rockaway Presbyterian cemetery. Visiting hours will be held on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

For those who wish, donations may be made in Teddy’s name to either: Turning Point (www.tpnj.org), or: New Hope (www.newhopefoundation.org). Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Stanley M. Bernardi

ROCKAWAY – Stanley M. Bernardi died on Thursday, July 21, 2011 at Compassionate Care Hospice at St. Clare’s Hospital/Dover. He was 86.

Born and raised in Boonton, he lived in Rockaway Borough for over 60 years.

He served in the Marines during WWII.

Mr. Bernardi was a sales manager with Region Oil (formerly Spartan Oil) for over 40 years prior to retiring.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church of the Rockaway’s.

He was predeceased by his wife Virginia on April 20, 2011.

He is survived by three children: David of Michigan, Richard and Lisa both of NJ; two sisters: Nancy Longo and Bubby Hoefel; brother: Michael Bernardi; and seven grandchildren: David, Robert, Nicholas, Richard, Nicole, Brittany and Derek.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 26 at 10:00 a.m. at the Whitham – Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway. Interment will follow at Rockaway Presbyterian cemetery. Visiting hours will be held on Monday from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Joseph D. Koury

ROCKAWAY – Joseph D. Koury died on Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at Merry Heart Nursing Home in Boonton Twp. He was 88.

Born and raised in Dover, he spent most of his life in Rockaway.

He served in the Army during WWII.

Mr. Koury worked in grounds maintenance at Picatinny Arsenal before his retirement in 1984; prior to that he was the owner of Koury Brothers Market until 1960.

He was predeceased by his brother Albert, and his sister Laurice Somerville.

He is survived by his Sister - in-law Jacqueline Koury of Rockaway, his brother-in-law Charles Somerville of Florida; and six nieces and nephews.

Services were private under the direction of Whitham – Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway.

Florence M. (Suk) Freund

ROCKAWAY TWP. – Florence M. (nee Suk) Freund died on Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at Morristown Memorial Hospital. She was 70.

Born and raised in Denville she moved to Rockaway Twp. in 1961.

Mrs. Freund was a homemaker.

She was predeceased by her father Charles J. Suk, Sr. and her brother Charles J. Suk, Jr.

She is survived by her husband Richard H. of 50 years; her mother Florence Suk of Denville; three children: Richard A. Freund, Janet (and Brian) Kelly all of Rockaway Twp., and Christopher (and Cheryl) Freund of Morris Plains; a sister Jacqueline Culvert of VT; a brother Matthew Suk of Denville; and five grandchildren: Ryan, Danielle and Kyle Freund, and Elise and Robin Kelly.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 22 at 11:00 a.m. at the Whitham – Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway. Interment will follow at Marcella Union cemetery. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, July 21 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: American Heart Assn. or American Diabetes Assn. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

John E. "Jack" McCabe

ROCKAWAY TWP. – Jack McCabe, 82, died peacefully in his sleep at the Regal Heights Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Jackson Heights, Queens, NY on Sunday, February 19, 2012.

Mr. McCabe was born in New York City and moved to Rockaway Township where he lived for nearly four decades before moving into Regal Heights.

He served in the U.S. Army as a young man, was a devout catholic, and a lector at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Rockaway, the town where he raised six children together with his wife.

He was a computer programmer at Chase Manhattan Bank and attended Pace University.

He is survived by his wife, Juliana A. McCabe; his six children, Stephen McCabe, David McCabe, Jeannie Cancelliere, Kathy Borruso, Richard McCabe and Linda McCabe-Cattuna; his brothers Bob, Peter and Charlie; and his 14 grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, Feb. 23 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Rockaway at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at St. Cecilia cemetery, Rockaway.

Visiting hours will be held at the Whitham-Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave, Rockaway on Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to: Alzheimer’s Assn., 400 Morris Ave., Suite 251, Denville NJ 07834. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Shirley E. Maloney

ROCKAWAY TWP. – Shirley E. Maloney died on Monday, February 13, 2012 at St. Clare’s Hospital/Denville. She was 77.

Born and raised in Manchester, NH, she resided in the White Meadow Lake section of Rockaway Twp. for 46 years.

Mrs. Maloney was the owner and operator of Lakeside Printing in Lake Hopatcong for 20 years prior to retiring in 1999.

She was predeceased by her husband James in 1997.

She was a parishioner of St. Cecilia’s Church, Rockaway.

She is survived by her daughter, Laura Masonheimer of Dickson City, PA; two sons, Michael Maloney of Rockaway Twp., and Jay Maloney of Mine Hill; her sister Virginia of Manchester, NH; four grandchildren: Buddy, Shyrlain, Michelle and Patrick; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 10 a.m. at St. Cecilia’s Church, 70 Church St., Rockaway. Arrangements by Whitham-Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Market Street Mission, or to the U.S.O.

Robert A. Hallead

ROCKAWAY TWP. – Robert A. Hallead died on Saturday, February 11, 2012 at Morristown Medical Center. He was 91.

Born in North Branch, Michigan, he resided in Rockaway Twp for over 50 years.

Mr. Hallead worked in maintenance for Morristown Rehab in Morristown for 19 years before retiring in 1991.

He was predeceased by his wife Margaret in 1997.

He is survived by four children: Robert J. of Grapevine, TX, James of Palm Springs, CA, Deborah Hallead-Hunter and her husband Edward of Rockaway Twp., and Kurt and his wife Ann of Austin, TX; and three grandchildren: Riley, Regan and Drew Hallead.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 10 a.m. at the Whitham – Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave, Rockaway. Interment to follow at St. Cecilia’s cemetery, Rockaway. Visitation hours will be held on Wednesday from 1-2 p.m. and resuming from 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Llewellyn Decker, Jr.

ESCONDIDO, CA - Llewellyn Decker Jr., 91, passed away peacefully at the Life Care Center in Escondido, CA, on Saturday, January 21, 2012. He was born in Rockaway Borough where he lived for 45 years before moving to Redlands, CA.; Milford, Conn.; Olive Branch, Miss.; and then Escondido.

He served in the Army-Air Force; was a deacon in the First Presbyterian Church of Rockaway; a member of the Rockaway Recreation Department; and was a Mason in the Jephthah Lodge #233 for 65 years, serving one year as Master. An avid bridge player, he achieved the rank of Bronze Life Master.

Mr. Decker worked as a design-draftsman in the aero-space industry at Reaction Motors of Rockaway, Thiokol of Denville and Lockheed of Redlands, where he worked on the X-15, Mercury, Gemini and Apollo space rockets. He also worked at Black & Decker and General Electric before retiring in 1991.

He was predeceased by his parents Llew and Edith, his wife Doris, a sister Margaret and an infant daughter, Donna Lynn.

He is survived by his sons Bob Decker of Rockaway and Jim Decker of Clearwater, Fla.; a daughter Judith Ann of Escondido; a sister Helen Tucker of Red Bank; grandchildren Bob, Leanne and Jen; four great-grandchildren; and several nephews, nieces, grand-nephews and grand-nieces.

A memorial service for Mr. Decker will be scheduled at a later date when he will be buried at the First Presbyterian Church of Rockaway.
