Charles W. Smith, 72
Loan Officer; Had Served In Both Army and Navy
Charles W. Smith, 72, of Westfield
died on Thursday, December 27, 2001 at
his home.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, he
lived in Westfield since 1964.
Mr. Smith was employed as a loan
officer at the Clark branch of Summit
Bank for the past 10 years. Earlier,
he was President of the Underwriters
Bank and Trust Company in
New York City.
He graduated from City College of
New York in 1956 with a business
degree and had done work towards a
master’s degree from New York University.
He served in the United States
Navy from 1947 to 1951, and in the
United States Army as a Sergeant
during the Korean Conflict from 1951
to 1953.
Surviving are his wife, Jessie
Robertson Smith; two daughters,
Mary Nuber and Cheryl Smith; a
son, Steven Smith, and four grandsons.
A Mass of Christian Burial was
offered on Monday, December 31, at
the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic
Church, following the funeral from
the Dooley Colonial Home, 556
Westfield Avenue in Westfield. Interment
was at General Doyle Veterans
Cemetery in Arneytown.
Memorial contributions may be
made to the Westfield Volunteer Rescue
Squad, 335 Watterson Street,
P.O. Box 356, Westfield 07090.

Edith H. Smith, 77
Edith H. Smith, 77, of Westfield
died on Tuesday, January 1, 2002 at the
Wayne View Convalescent Center in
Wayne.
Born in Quincy, Mass., she was a
resident of Westfield for most of her
life.
Mrs. Smith graduated from the
College of William and Mary in
Williamsburg, Va., with a degree in
chemistry. She was also a member of
the school’s Chi Omega Sorority.
She was a member of the Overlook
Twigs and the High Bridge Methodist
Church in High Bridge.
She was predeceased by her husband,
Richard Kent Smith, in 1982.
Surviving are a daughter, Wendy
L. Warwick of Scotch Plains; a son,
Harwood Kent Smith of
Cockeysville, Md.; a brother, Robert
Lee Harwood of Naples, Fla., and
two grandchildren.
The funeral service was held at 10
a.m. on Saturday, January 5, at the
Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad
Street in Westfield. Interment was
private.
Memorial donations may be made
to the High Bridge Methodist Church,
36 Church Street, High Bridge 08829-
1509.

Charles Schadle, 71, Elm Radio Owner;
Was Past District Governor For Lions
Charles F. Schadle, 71, of Fanwood
died on Monday, December 24, 2001 at
his residence.
Born in Rahway, he had lived in
Sayreville before relocating to
Fanwood 38 years ago.
Mr. Schadle was the owner of Elm
Radio and TV in Westfield, where he
had worked since 1942.
A veteran of the Korean Conflict,
he served in the United States Air
Force from 1951 to 1955.
Mr. Schadle was a longtime member
of the Fanwood Lions Club, having
held the offices of both Secretary
and President. He was Deputy District
Governor, then District Governor
of District 16 E of the Lions from
1993 to 1994; served on the Membership
Committee and the Rules
and Regulations Committee and was
also a member of the Past District
Governor Council of Lions. He additionally
was Chairman of the Lions
Eyemobile for many years.
He was a life member of the New
Jersey Jaycees and a member of no.
7778 of the Junior Chamber International
and of the New Jersey Jaycee
International Senate. Mr. Schadle was
also instrumental in the establishment
of Fanwood’s Channel 35.
He was predeceased by his wife,
Dorothy M. Schadle, in 1988.
Surviving are two daughters, Jean
Schadle Fenner of Edison and Cyndi
Schadle of Deltona, Fla.; three grandchildren
and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held on Monday,
December 31, at the Memorial Funeral
Home, 155 South Avenue in
Fanwood.
Memorial contributions may be

to benefit the Eyemobile, P.O.
Box 266, Fanwood 07023, or to the
Deborah Hospital, P.O. Box 820,
Browns Mills 08015.

Fred H. Lippert, 86
Active In Church; Was Recipient of Four Bronze Stars
Fred H. Lippert, 86, of Fanwood
died on Wednesday, December 26, 2001 at
Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center
in Plainfield.
Born in Chicago, he had lived in
Mariemont, Ohio and Chicago before
moving to Fanwood 40 years
ago.
Mr. Lippert had worked as a
manufacturer’s representative for
Ronan and Kunzl, Inc. in Marshall,
Mich., prior to retiring in 1989.
A United States Navy veteran of
World War II, he served aboard the
aircraft carrier USS Santee and received
four bronze stars.
He was a member, deacon and
usher, and a member of the session,
at the Fanwood Presbyterian Church
in Fanwood.
Surviving are his wife, Lucille D.
Lippert; a son, Vice Admiral Keith
Lippert, United States Navy, of
Mechanicsburg, Pa.; a daughter,
Sandra Meyers of Levittown, Pa.,
and six grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on
Saturday, s December 29, at the Memorial
Funeral Home, 155 South
Avenue in Fanwood.
Memorial contributions may be
made to the Memorial Fund of the
Fanwood Presbyterian Church, 74

Edgar Reeve, 100
Cared for Family; Lifelong Resident married Last Year
Edgar Reeve, 100, of Westfield
died on Friday, December 28, 2001 at the
four-acre estate in Westfield where
he had lived all his life.
After working for two years as an
insurance salesman for New York
Life more than 70 years ago, Mr.
Reeve left the firm to take care of his
parents. His father, William Edgar
Reeve, was instrumental in the creation
of the Westfield YMCA.
He was a member of the First
Congregational Church in Westfield.
In 1985, he and his brother, Ralph,
ceded the Reeve homestead on Mountain
Avenue, which borders
Mindowaskin Park, to The Town of
Westfield, reserving a life estate in
Mr. Reeve. The property was given
as an eventual home for the Westfield
Historical Society.
Last year, he married Christine
Backhaus, who had previously been
his housekeeper for 16 years.
In addition to his parents, Mr.
Reeve was predeceased by his brother
in 1988.
Besides his wife, he is survived by
his brother-in-law, Martin Schmiede
of Fanwood, and a cousin, Helen T.
Martin of Westfield.
Services were held on Sunday,
December 30, at the Bruce C. Van
Arsdale Funeral Home in Somerville.
Interment was at Fairview Cemetery
in Westfield.
Memorial donations may be made
to the Westfield Historical Society,
P.O. Box 613, Westfield 07091-0613.

Eugene A. Kaplan, 68
Had Been Manager; CCD Teacher and CYO Basketball Coach
Eugene A. Kaplan, 68, of Westfield
died on Saturday, December 29, 2001 at
his home.
Born in Jersey City, he relocated to
Westfield in 1968.
Mr. Kaplan had been employed as
Inside Sales and Export Manager for
the B. Manischewitz Company in
Jersey City for 12 years before retiring
in January of 1999.
Prior to that, he had worked as an
engineer for General Electric Company
in Connecticut and for the
Singer Company in Finderne.
A 1960 graduate of the Newark
College of Engineering, now the New
Jersey Institute of Technology, he
earned a Bachelor of Science Degree
in Mechanical Engineering. He received
his Master of Business Administration
Degree from Fairleigh
Dickinson University in 1978.
Mr. Kaplan was a Past President
and former Regional Governor of
Toastmasters of Westfield.
He was a former Confraternity of
Christian Doctrine teacher and
Catholic Youth Organization basketball
coach at St. Helen’s Roman
Catholic Church in Westfield, where
he was one of the original communicants.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara
Kaplan; two sons, Kevin Kaplan of
Westfield and Keith Kaplan of
Chester Springs, Pa.; a daughter,
Mary Addeo of Gardena, Calif.; two
brothers, Joseph Kaplan of Tarpon
Springs, Fla. and Michael Kaplan of
Elizabeth, and a grandson.
A Mass of Christian Burial was
offered yesterday, Wednesday, January
2, at St. Helen’s Church. Interment
took place at St. Gertrude’s
Cemetery in Colonia.
Arrangements were under the direction
of the Dooley Colonial Home,
556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.
Memorial contributions may be
made to the American Heart Association.
