Joseph Castagna, 85
Joseph Castagna, 85, of Fanwood died
on Sunday, February 6, 2000 in Rahway
Hospital.
Born in Ribera, Italy, he had lived in
Elizabeth and Linden before moving to
Fanwood three years ago.
Mr. Castagna had been a laborer with
Laborers Local No. 394 in Elizabeth for 20
years before retiring in 1975.
He was a member of the Ribera Club
of Elizabeth.
Surviving are his wife, Pauline
Castagna; a daughter, Angela Maria
Maggs, and two grandchildren.
A Mass will be offered at 9:30 a.m.
today, Thursday, February 10, in St.
Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church in
Elizabeth, following the funeral from
the Corsentino Home for Funerals in
Elizabeth.

Serafina Bruno, 84
Serafina Caricone Bruno, 84, of
Westfield died on Thursday, February 3,
2000 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in New York City, she had lived
there before moving to Westfield 15
years ago.
Mrs. Bruno was a self-employed seamstress
in New York City.
Surviving are her husband of 49 years,
Joseph Bruno; a son, Dr. Victor Bruno;
a brother, John Caricone, and four
grandchildren.
A Mass was offered on Saturday, February 5,
at St. Helen’s Roman Catholic
Church in Westfield. Interment took
place at Fairview Cemetery, also in
Westfield.

Frank J. Tullio, 90
Frank Joseph Tullio, 90, of Holiday
City in Berkeley Township died on
Monday, February 7, 2000 at Cranford
Health and Extended Care in Cranford.
Born in Pescopagano, Italy, he had
lived in East Orange for 50 years
before moving to Holiday City in 1980.
Mr. Tullio had been employed in
the Treasurer’s Department of Prudential
Insurance Company in Newark for 45 years
before retiring in 1962.
After his retirement from Prudential,
he worked for the City of
East Orange Parking Authority.
Mr. Tullio had been President of
the Prudential Insurance Company
Athletic Association and of the East
Orange Alcoholic Beverage Control
Board.
He was a Fourth Degree member
of the South Orange Council of the
Knights of Columbus in South Orange,
and a member of the East Orange
Republican Club and the East
Orange Civic Club.
An umpire for the American Softball
Association, he umpired the
Army Championship Series in Port
Richie, Fla., for a number of years.
He was predeceased by his wife,
Lillian Egidio Tullio, in 1985.
Surviving are a daughter, Madelyn
Donatiello of Bayville and Jensen
Beach, Fla.; two sons, Thomas L.
Tullio of Scotch Plains and Douglas
J. Tullio of Laguna Beach, Calif.;
nine grandchildren and three great-
grandchildren.
The funeral will be held today,
Thursday, February 10, at 9 a.m.
from the Memorial Funeral Home,
155 South Avenue in Fanwood,
followed by a 10 a.m. Mass at the
Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman
Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
Interment will follow at Gate of
Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover.

Dr. Eugene Seiter, 81
Army Veteran; E. I. Dupont Chemist Held Six Patents
Dr. Eugene Dwight Seiter, 81, of
Newport News, Va. died on Wednesday,
December 29, 1999 in the
Williamsburg Community Hospital
in Williamsburg, Va.
A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he was a
former longtime resident of Westfield
and Orange, Va.
Dr. Seiter was employed as a senior
research chemist for almost 40
years with the E. I. Dupont Company,
where he patented six inventions related
to photoproduct technology.
After graduating from Lehigh
University in Bethlehem, Pa., he had
worked for the Best Foods Company
for several years. Although granted
essential worker status with the
company during World War II, he waived
it in order to serve in the European
Theater.
He served in the United States
Army during the war, after which he
earned a Doctoral Degree in Physical
Chemistry from Rutgers University.
Mr. Seiter was active in The Presbyterian
Church in Westfield and the
First Presbyterian Church of Orange,
Va.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years,
Virginia Johnson Seiter; two sons,
Eugene Dwight Seiter, Jr. of
Poquoson, Va. and Clinton Timothy
Seiter of San Francisco; a daughter,
Carolyn Sue Seiter Sturgeon of
Charleston, W. Va.; two sisters,
Virginia Seiter Meerbott of Houston,
Tex. and Harriet Seiter Medaris of
Burke, Va., and five grandchildren.
The funeral was held on Friday,
December 31, in Graham Cemetery
in Orange, Va.
Arrangements were handled by the
Preddy Funeral Home in Orange.
Memorial donations may be made
to the First Presbyterian Church in
Orange, Va. 22960.

Norman Sprague, 85
Norman Thomas Sprague, 85, of
Westfield died on Friday, December
10, 1999 in Houston, Tex.
Born in Portland, Ore. on April 4,
1914, he was a long-time Westfield
resident.
Mr. Sprague had been employed as
a supply specialist and traffic
manager with General Motors and
General Electric before retiring
in 1979.
He served in the United States
Navy during World War II.
Mr. Sprague was active with the
Lions Club and the American Legion
and held officer positions in both
organizations.
He was predeceased by his wife,
Josephine Sprague, in 1990.
Surviving are two sisters, Nancy
Bickell of Brewster, Mass. and Betty
Shelton of Rockville Center, N.Y.
A memorial service will be held
this Saturday, January 8, at 2 p.m. at
the First United Methodist Church in
Westfield.

Jeanne E. Young, 97
Jeanne E. Young, 97, of Westfield
died on Saturday, December 25, 1999 in
the Westfield Center, Genesis
ElderCare Network in Westfield.
Born in Scotland, she had resided
in Pittsburgh, Pa. for 80 years before
moving to Westfield 14 years ago.
She was formerly a school secretary
for the Dilworth School System
in Pittsburgh.
She was predeceased by her husband,
William C. Young, and by a
brother, John W. Ellis.
Surviving are a daughter, Susan Y.
Florian of Westfield; five grandchildren
and four great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be
celebrated on Friday, January 7, at St.
Scholastica Catholic Church in
Aspinwall, Pa. Burial will follow in
St. Joseph’s Cemetery in East
Mckeesport, Pa.
In lieu of flowers, the family has
requested Mass cards in her memory.
Arrangements are under the direction
of the Huber Funeral Home in
Bordentown.
