Emily S. Luerssen, 88
Emily Slocum Luerssen, 88, of Westfield died on Wednesday, October 6, 1999 at the Berkeley Hall Nursing Home in Berkeley Heights.
Born in Omaha, Neb., she lived in Westfield since 1921.
Mrs. Luerssen was a member of the Fort Nightly Club and the Gardenaires of Westfield.
She was predeceased by her husband, Theodore Luerssen, in 1969, and her son, William Luerssen, in 1998.
Surviving are her sons, David C. Luerssen of Bridgewater and James Luerssen of Westfield; her sister, Lucille Malsbury of Lavalette; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 9, at the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street, Westfield. Interment was held at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.

Dorothy H. Nixon, 84
Dorothy Huyler Nixon, 84, of Scotch Plains died on Tuesday, October 5, 1999 at home.
Born in Westfield, she settled in Scotch Plains in 1941.
Mrs. Nixon was a homemaker. She was a member of the Scotch Plains Players.
She was predeceased by her husband, Walter Nixon, in 1984.
Surviving are two sons; three daughters; many grandchildren and step grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held on Saturday, October 9, at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Arrangements were handled by the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.

Graham J. Smith, 65
Travel Consultant With AAA, New Jersey Automobile Club
Graham J. Smith, 65, of Scotch Plains died on Sunday, October 3, 1999 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Providence, R.I., he lived in Norwich, Conn. and Staten Island, N.Y. before moving to Scotch Plains 23 years ago.
Mr. Smith was a travel consultant with AAA, New Jersey Automobile Club in Springfield, for the last five years.
Previously, he had worked as a sales manager with Wallace Computer Services in New Providence, where he worked for 20 years.
He was a 1956 graduate of Boston University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing.
He had served in the Army from 1957 to 1959.
Mr. Smith was a Boy Scout in Norwich and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He was also a member of the Order of the Arrow.
Surviving are his wife, Roberta Smith, and a daughter, Ellen LaFronz.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, October 9, in the First Congregational Church in Westfield.

SALVATO, Alice (Weidenbacher)
“Grandma Ricky”
In Madison, Conn., October 12, 1999, of Westfield and also of Brick. Wife of Charles Salvato.
Loving mother of Sally Scott Stedman of Guilford, Conn., Drew Weidenbacher of Bellingham, Wash., and Nancy Boyd of Waterford, Mich.
Predeceased by one brother, Ken Richter and two sisters, Katherine Spalding and Jean Berry.
Also survived by six grandchildren, Luke and Geoffery Scott, Trevor and Payton Weidenbacher, and Douglas and Ryan Boyd.
A Memorial service will be held Sunday, October 17, at the Mountainside Presbyterian Church at 3 p.m.
Contributions in Mrs. Salvato’s memory may be made to The Children’s Specialized Hospital, New Providence Road, Mountainside, NJ 07090.

Herman Estrin, 83
Was English Professor At New Jersey Institute of Technology
Herman Estrin, 83, of Scotch Plains, died on Friday, May 7, 1999 at the Westfield Center in Westfield.
Born in North Plainfield in 1915, he was a long-time resident of Scotch Plains.
Mr. Estrin was an emeritus professor of English at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and an educator for more than 60 years. He began his teaching career at the Grant School in South Plainfield in 1938.
He joined NJIT, then Newark College of Engineering, as an instructor of English, in 1946 before retiring in 1981.
He was an advisor for almost every student publication at the university, including the school newspaper, yearbook, literary magazine and technical magazine.
He is founder of the “The Log,” the student handbook.
For 30 years, the Estrin Scholarships have been given to NJIT students showing leadership in extra-curricular activities.
He was the first recipient of NJIT’s Robert Van Houten Excellence in Teaching Award in 1970, and was given the 1971 Western Electric Fund Award for excellence in the instruction of engineering students, and the Distinguished Teaching Award by the New Jersey Council of Teachers of English.
Organizations such as the National Council of College Publication Advisors, which gave him the Distinguished Newspaper Advisor Award; the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, which gave him the Gold Key Award; the New Jersey Scholastic Press Association; and the Wall Street Journal have recognized Mr. Estrin as an outstanding faculty advisor.
He has authored numerous publications, lectured and made presentations internationally, served as president of the New Jersey Council of Teachers of English; the New Jersey College English Association; Pi Delta Upsilon, the collegiate journalism society; and the National Council of College Publications.
He received the Silver Medal from the mayor of Paris for teaching chemical engineering graduate students at the University of Paris.
In 1976, he initiated the New Jersey Literary Hall of Fame at NJIT, which includes the most prestigious writers from the Garden State.
In 1995, Mr. Estrin was inducted as a charter member of the North Plainfield High School Alumni Hall of Fame.
He was a 1933 graduate of North Plainfield High School and a 1937 graduate of Drew University in Madison, where he received an honorary degree last year.
He received his master’s degree from Columbia University in New York City in 1942 and his doctorate from Columbia in 1954.
He had served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from 1942 - 1946, attaining the rank of captain.
Surviving are his wife, Pearl Simon Estrin of Scotch Plains; a son, Robert K. Estrin of Scotch Plains, a daughter, Karen Estrin, of Nashville, Tennessee; a sister, Cele Kipperman of Coronado, California; and a brother, Marc Estrin of Lemon Grove, California.
A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, May 10, at 10:30 a.m., at the Higgins Funeral Home in Plainfield.
Interment was held at B’nai Abraham Memorial Park in Union.

Charles T. Mannino, Sr.
85, Owner Of Construction Company, Car Wash
Charles Mannino, Sr., 85, of Deerfield Beach, Florida, died on Tuesday, May 4, 1999 in North Broward Medical Center in Pompano Beach, Florida.
Born and raised in Westfield, he had lived here until 1974 before moving to Florida.
Mr. Mannino had owned R. Mannino and Sons Construction Co. and the Towne Car Wash with his brothers Martino Mannino, Thomas Mannino, and Vincent Mannino.
He was a past member of the Community Band of Westfield.
He had constructed the original gradings of the picnic area at Tamaques Park in Westfield.
Mr. Mannino graduated from the Westfield High School in 1934 and attended Rutgers Agricultural School.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Martino Mannino and Thomas Mannino.
Surviving are his wife, Rose Ruffini Mannino; three sons, Charles Mannino, Jr. of Westfield, Joseph Mannino of Boca Raton, Florida and David Mannino of Florida; a daughter, Dolores Rust of Edison; his brother, Vincent Mannino of Westfield; two sisters, Vicenza Abbruscato of Fanwood and Connie Ferrara of Scotch Plains; seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
A Funeral Mass will be offered on Saturday, May 15, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church in Westfield. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Helping Hands and Hearts of St. Helen’s Church, 1600 Rahway Avenue, Westfield, 07090.
Arrangements are being handled by the Neptune Society in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Kristen Resch, 40
Registered Nurse; Graduate of Westfield High School
Kristen Resch, 40, of the Chestnut Hill section of Philadelphia died on Friday, May 7, 1999 at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia.
Born in East Orange on December 14, 1958, she grew up in Westfield and had also lived in Andorra before moving to Philadelphia more than 15 years ago.
Mrs. Resch was a registered nurse for The Chestnut Hill Pediatric Group for 15 years.
Previously, she had worked at the Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia in its Cardiac Intensive Care Unit.
She was a member of Our Mother of Consolation Roman Catholic Church in Chestnut Hill and a former member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Andorra.
She graduated from Westfield High School and from the University of Delaware, where she received a nursing degree and her credentials as a registered nurse.
Surviving are her husband of eight years, Robert B. “Rudy” Resch; a son, Timothy Resch; a son, Timothy Resch of Chestnut Hill; her parents, Harry Bockus and Sally Hickok, both of Mountainside; four brothers, Rick Bousquet of Cambridge, Massachusetts, Paul Bockus of Bozeman, Montana, Chris Bousquet of Burlington, Vermont, and Bill Bockus of Mountainside, and three sisters, Susan Bockus of Palo Alto, California, Carol Anderson of Mendham and Anne Bousquet of Ethiopia.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, May 11, at Our Mother of Consolation Church. Interment was at the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Cheltenham, Pennsylvania.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the Lownes Funeral Home of Lafayette Hill and East Norriton, Pennsylvania.
Memorial contributions may be made to Gifts of Life Donor Program, 2000 Hamilton Street, Suite 201, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 19130.
