Dorothy Moran Meeker, 91
Former Owner of Meeker’s Garden Center
Dorothy E. Moran Meeker, 91, of Westfield, died on Tuesday, May 11, 1999 at Ashbrook Nursing Home in Scotch Plains.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, she had lived in Westfield since 1924.
Mrs. Meeker was the owner of Meeker’s Garden Center in Westfield for 40 years, before retiring in 1990.
She had been the First President of the Mother’s Guild Holy Trinity School in Westfield.
She had graduated in 1939 from the St. Joseph’s College for Women in Brooklyn where she earned a degree in English.
She was predeceased by her husband, John K. Meeker, Sr.
Surviving are three sons, John K. Meeker, Jr. of Scotch Plains, David J. Meeker of Dublin, California and T. Philip Meeker of Richardson, Texas; 10 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be offered tomorrow, Friday, May 14, at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in
Scotch Plains. Visitation will be held today, Thursday, May 13, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue, Westfield. Interment will be at St. Gertrude’s Cemetery in Colonia.

Joseph Baker, 62
Was Carpenter At Runnells Hospital for 16 Years
Joseph E. Baker, Jr., 62, of Scotch Plains died on Friday, August 20, 1999 at home.
Born in Jersey City, he had moved to Scotch Plains 29 years ago.
Mr. Baker was a carpenter for Union County at the John E. Runnells Hospital in Berkeley Heights for 16 years.
Surviving are his former wife, Charnette Banks of Linden; two sons, Edward J. Baker of McGuire Air Force Base, Wrightstown, and Michael V. Baker of Linden; his daughter, Toni Baker of Charlotte, N.C.; two sisters, Janet Elliot and Thelma Kilby, both of Orange, and three grandchildren.
A Memorial Service was held on August 27 at the Cathedral Second Baptist Church in Perth Amboy.
Arrangements were handled by the Judkins Colonial Home in Plainfield.
Memorial donations may be made to the Cathedral Second Baptist Church, Madison Avenue, Perth Amboy, 08861.

Ralph Russo, 68
Korean War Veteran; Was Owner of Russo Business Machines
Ralph M. Russo, Sr., 68, of Scotch Plains died on Tuesday, August 24, 1999 in the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.
Born in Paterson, he lived in North Arlington and Woodbridge before moving to Scotch Plains 33 years ago.
Mr. Russo was the owner of Russo Business Machines in Scotch Plains for 30 years before retiring in 1994.
He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War.
Mr. Russo was a past president of the South Plainfield Lions Club and of the New Jersey Office Machine Dealers Association.
He was a communicant of Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
Surviving are his wife, Elsie Lombardi Russo; three sons, Thomas M. Russo, Richard R. Russo and Ralph M. Russo, Jr.; a daughter, Patricia E. Whitehouse; a brother, Michael Russo; his mother, Grace Tripsas Russo and 10 grandchildren.
Arrangements were handled by the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.
A Funeral Mass was held on August 27 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.
Memorial donations may be made to the Cancer Institute of New Jersey, 195 Little Albany Street, New Brunswick, 08901.

Douglas H. Sampson, 90
Douglas H. Sampson, 90, of Cornwall Manor, Cornwall, Pa. died on Wednesday, August 25, 1999 in Good Samaritan Hospital in Lebanon, Pa.
Born in Jersey City on June 20, 1909, the son of the late Albert and Helen Hazen Sampson, he formerly lived in Vermont and Westfield.
Mr. Sampson had worked at the former Bell Labs in Murray Hill in the purchasing department for 37 years before retiring.
He was an Eagle Scout, leader and former commissioner of the Watchung Area Boy Scouts of America and was Valedictorian of the 1930 graduating class of Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
He was a member of the Lower Brandywine Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, Del. and of Atlas Pythagoras Lodge No. 10 of the Free and Accepted Masons in Westfield.
Surviving are his wife of 32 years, Mary Anne P. Cote Sampson; two sons, Robert D. Sampson of Ridgewood and John H. Sampson; a daughter, Mary Louise Clayton of Summit, and eight grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at a later date. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Arrangements are being handled by the Rohland Funeral Home, Inc. in Lebanon.

Richard G. Ehrhart, 70
Richard G. Ehrhart, 70, of Westfield died on Thursday, August 26, 1999 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Elizabeth, he moved to Westfield last year.
Mr. Ehrhart had been a security guard for the Union County Courthouse Garage in Elizabeth for 30 years before retiring in 1990.
Prior to that, he had worked for Childhood Interest in Roselle and for the Thatcher Finance Company in Garwood.
He was a member of the Men’s Club of the Elmore White Castle in Elizabeth.
Surviving are three sisters, Bernice McGowan, Ginny McDonough and Mary Van Buskirk, and two brothers, Thomas Ehrhart and James Joseph Ehrhart.
A Mass was offered on Saturday, August 28, in St. Michael’s Church in Cranford, following the funeral from the Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home in Westfield.

William Plant, 64
Sales Executive; Active in Little League and Jaycees
William Voorhees Plant, 64, of Westfield died on Thursday, August 26, 1999 at home.
Born in Jersey City, he moved to Westfield in 1963.
Mr. Plant had been a sales executive with Westvaco Corporation and Champion International Paper before retiring in 1994. He also owned The Cheese Shop, a gourmet food store in Westfield.
He attended Blair Academy in Blairstown and was awarded a bachelor’s degree in geology from Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y.
After obtaining his degree, he entered the United States Army and graduated from Officers Candidate School in Fort Sill, Okla. Achieving the rank of Second Lieutenant, he was honorably discharged in 1960.
Mr. Plant was a member of the Westfield Jaycees, the Westfield Boosters Association, the Westfield Little League Baseball, Football and Wrestling Associations, the Echo Lake Country Club, the Colonial Westfield Bridge and Tennis Club and the Westfield Y.
He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church in Westfield, where he served as a Stephens Minister and was active with the church youth.
He was also an elected committeeman for the First Ward, Third District in Westfield for the Republican organization of Union County.
Surviving are his wife, Maretta Moore Plant; two sons, Scott Plant and Craig Plant; a daughter, Suzannah Plant, and two grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, August 28, at the First United Methodist Church.
Memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Westfield, 1 East Broad Street, Westfield, 07090; The Cancer Center at Somerset Medical Center, 110 Rehill Avenue, Somerville, 08876 or to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN), P. O. Box 4809, Palos Verdes, Calif. 90274.
Arrangements were handled by the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.

Frederick Linge, 86
F&AM Member; Inducted Into Bowlers Hall of Fame
Frederick William Linge, 86, of Scotch Plains died on Thursday, August 26, 1999 in Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Jersey City, he had lived in Cranford before moving to Scotch Plains 34 years ago.
Mr. Linge had been employed as a regional sales manager with Beckley Perforating Company in Garwood for more than 30 years, retiring in 1984.
He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1934 with a degree in psychology.
He was a member of the Azure Lodge No. 129 of the Free and Accepted Masons in Cranford, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Northern New Jersey, the Old Guard of Westfield and the duplicate bridge group of the Old Guard.
Mr. Linge served as President of the Union County Bowling Association and was inducted into the Union County Bowlers Hall of Fame in 1984.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth Gerlach Linge, and a niece and nephew, both of Germany.
A memorial service was held on Tuesday, August 31, at the Scotch Plains Baptist Church.
Arrangements were handled by the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association or to the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
