Elizabeth P. Quinn Martin

Sea Girt resident Elizabeth P. Quinn Martin died Tuesday, March 8 in the Care One Senior Center, Paramus.

She was 80 years old.

Born in New York City, Mrs. Martin lived in Ridgefield before coming to Sea Girt 26 years ago. She was a science teacher at Ridgefield Park High School, and also taught seventh- and eighth-grade science at St. Matthews School, Ridgefield, before retiring.

Mrs. Martin was a communicant of St Mark’s Church, Sea Girt, where she was a member of the Rosary Alter Society, the Social Concerns Committee, and the St. Mark’s Altar Ladies.

She was predeceased by her husband, William Martin, and her daughter, Maureen Cioni.

Mrs. Martin is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Bennett, Ho Ho Kus; six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Funeral arrangements were from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township.

In lieu of flowers donations to the St. Mark’s Church Societal Concerns Committee, 215 Crescent Parkway, Sea Girt, 08750, would be appreciated.

Ingeborg E.M. [Wiese] Mette

Brielle resident Ingeborg E.M. [Wiese] Mette died Wednesday, March 9 in her home.

She was 75 years old.

Born in Kropp, Germany, Mrs. Mette lived in Neptune before moving to Brielle 32 years ago. She was a homemaker and a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Point Pleasant. Mrs. Mette also visited the elderly and sick shut-ins.

She is survived by her husband, Herbert Mette; a daughter, Vera Mefford, Morristown, Tenn.; and a sister, Martha Warncke, New York City.

A memorial service will be held today at 10 a.m. at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Point Pleasant. Van Hise & Callagan Funeral Home, Point Pleasant Beach is handling the arrangements.

Thomas J. DeVito

Eatontown resident Thomas J. DeVito, formerly of Sea Girt, died Sunday, March 13 in his home.

He was 59 years old.

Born in Neptune, Mr. DeVito was raised in Sea Girt and lived there before moving to Eatontown 21 years ago.

He was a regional sales representative for Phillips Pet Supply, based in Bath, Pa. He was a U.S. Army veteran and communicant of St. Jerome’s Church, West Long Branch.

Mr. DeVito was predeceased by his parents, Hon. D. Joseph and Marion P. Dugan DeVito, and his brother-in-law, Richard Casler.

He is survived by his wife, Michelle Casler DeVito; and his daughters Lauren, Mary and Lindsay DeVito. He also leaves two sisters and brothers-in-law, Nancy DeVito Cotter and her husband Jack, and Karen DeVito Hess and her husband Robert; a brother-in-law William Casler and his wife, Joan; and two sisters-in-law, Mary Casler Gallo and her husband, Joseph; and Sandra Casler.

Funeral arrangements were from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall.

Marian A. Lucas

Belmar resident Marian A. Lucas died Friday, March 11 in her home.

She was 66 years old.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she spent many years in Staten Island before moving to Kentucky and retiring in Belmar.

Mrs. Lucas retired after 10 years as an operator with Verizon in Kentucky. She was a beach attendant since retiring to Belmar.

Mrs. Lucas was an avid reader who enjoyed gardening. She loved the beach and country music.

Mrs. Lucas was predeceased by her parents, John Patrick and Cecilia Healy, and a brother, Richard Healy.

She is survived by two daughters, Toni Ann Brockmeyer and Jo Anne Petta; two sisters, Jacqueline Kugit and Cecilia Healy; three grandchildren Diane and Stephanie Petta and Alexander Brockmeyer; three nephews; and a niece.

Funeral arrangements were from Reilly Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Belmar First Aid, 9th Avenue and D Street, Belmar, 07719, would be appreciated.

Ann Maire Clark

Wall Township resident Ann Maire Clark died Friday, March 11 in the Medicenter, Neptune City.

She was 67 years old.

Born in the Bronx, N.Y., she had lived in Tottenville section of Staten Island before moving to the West Belmar section of Wall in 1971.

Ms. Clark was employed as the lead clerk at Merrill Lynch, Manhattan and later in Jersey City for 42 years before retiring in 1998.

She was a member of the Gaelic Society of New York City, an avid dancer, and loved Irish step dancing. Her hobbies were sewing, carpentry and gardening her beautiful roses.

Ms. Clark was also a patron and sponsor for the Humane Society, and was a communicant of the St. Rose Church, Belmar.

Ms. Clark was predeceased by her parents, John Harrison and Kathleen Foley Clark.

She is survived by two brothers and their wives, John Harrison Jr. and Phyllis, Onancock, Va., and Gerard F. and Lucille, Brick. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral arrangements were from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall.

Even though Ann loved her rose gardens, she also loved her animals, so in lieu of flowers kindly make donations to your local humane society in her memory.

William F. Voorhees

Brielle resident William F. Voorhees died Thursday, February 24, in the Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune.

He was 82 years old.

Born in Manasquan, Mr. Voorhees resided in Brielle for 53 years.

He served throughout Europe with the Army’s 101st Airborne during World War II, including at Bastogne and with the liberating force at Buchenwald.

Mr. Voorhees received a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Rutgers University, class of 1949. He retired in 1987 as a claims adjuster for New Jersey Manufacturers Insurance Co. He also worked as a weekend newscaster for WJLK radio for 36 years, retiring in 1985.

Mr. Voorhees was a communicant of St. Denis Catholic Church, and a life member of the V.F.W. He joined the Brielle Fire Company in 1963 and became an exempt fireman in 1968.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy Fischer Voorhees; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Peter Voorhees, Brielle, Paul and Patti Voorhees, Point Pleasant, and Philip Voorhees and Ellen Sher, M.D., Wayside. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Danielle, Sara, and Kevin Voorhees.

Funeral services were from the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan.

Sondra-Lea “Sandy” Lang

Dunnellon, Fla. resident Sondra-Lee “Sandy” Lang, formerly of Belmar, died Sunday, March 13, in her home.

She was 61 years old.

A native of Neptune, Mrs. Lang was a longtime resident of Belmar. She moved to Dunnellon, Fla., two years ago.

Mrs. Lang was a retired court clerk for several city governments in Monmouth County and was a 30-year member of Garden State REACT [Radio Emergency Associated Citizens Team]. She was also a member of Soka Gakkai International, a Buddhism studies organization. Although she was of the Christian faith most of her life, she had recently begun studies in Buddhism.

Mrs. Lang was predeceased by her son, Stephan Gregory Lang.

She is survived by her daughter, Stephanie Szabados, Dunnellon, Fla.; her husband, Victor, Dunnellon; a sister, Deborah Schwing, Dunnellon; her first husband, Clifford Chase and his wife Masako, Dunnellon; and her grandchildren Brandon-Joshua Victor Szabados, Cassondralayne Jocelyn Szabados, David-John Gregory Lang, and Allexondraleigh Jacqueline Szabados [due Aug. 12].

Funeral arrangements were from Fero Funeral Home, Dunnellon, Fla.

Dr. Eugene C. Hohenstein

Westfield resident Dr. Eugene C. Hohenstein, whose son and grandchildren live in Brielle, died Saturday, Feb. 19.

He was 81 years old.

A lifelong resident of Westfield, he summered in Manasquan for many years.

Dr. Hohenstein retired in 1991 after practicing medicine in Westfield for over 40 years.

During World War II he served in the United States Navy.

Dr. Hohenstein was predeceased by his twin brother, Robert F. Hohenstein III, who was killed in action while serving with the 29th Infantry Division in Europe.

He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Ruth Hohenstein; a son, Robert F. Hohenstein IV, Brielle; three grandchildren, Robert F. Hohenstein V, Michael E.C. Hohenstein, and Julia C.E. Hohenstein, all of Brielle; and a sister, Marjorie Johnston, Richmond, Va.

A private service was held on Feb. 23, under the direction of the Gray Funeral Home, Westfield.

Wilbur Charles Detjen

Wall Township resident Wilbur Charles Detjen died Wednesday, March 16 in the Shore Rehab Hospital, Brick Township.

He was 78 years old.

Born and raised in New York, he lived in Wall for the past 34 years. He was a Nay veteran of World War II, a member of the Park Rams of West New York, a 57-year member of the Blue Star Masonic Lodge #35 of West New York, and participated in the fellowship at the First Presbyterian Church of Manasquan.

Mr. Detjen was a machinist and the owner of Bill Detjen Automotive Company. He was fond of restoring and building antique cars, gardening, cooking, and loved family gatherings.

He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Sara Jane Detjen; children Robert and wife Sandra Detjen, Atlanta; Laurie Herman and her husband James, Toms River; Victor Evans and his wife Victoria, Manasquan; Daniel Evans and his wife Sandra, Brick; Susan Jane Sheare, Wall; sister Audrey Freudenberg, Wading River, NY; grandchildren Jonathen Satterfield, Kaitlyn Satterfield, Molly Satterfield; Kristen Evans, Brian Evans, Jacob Evans, Jamie Evans; Sarajane Sheare, Cody Sheare; and William Detjen, Nicole Detjen. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and many close friends.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 26 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Manasquan.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mr. Detjen’s memory to the First Presbyterian Church of Manasquan, 16 Virginia Ave., Manasquan, 08736.

Elizabeth R. Cocks

Winston-Salem, NC resident Elizabeth R. Cocks, formerly of Brielle, died Monday, March 14 in her home.

She was 86 years old.

Born in New York City, she resided in Brielle most of her life. She and her husband Richard and their two sons, Tom and Larry, enjoyed the shore, especially activities at the Manasquan River Yacht Club.

Mrs. Cocks was predeceased by her husband, Richard R. Cocks; parents Fred and Clara Rogan, Montclair; and son Lawrence R. Cocks, Manasquan.

She is survived by her son Thomas F. Cocks and daughter-in-law Connie Cocks, Clemmons, NC; grandson Dr. Timothy L. Cocks, Vero Beach, Florida; daughter Mia Elizabeth Adams, Mooresville, NC; granddaughter Elizabeth P. Adams and husband Jason L. Adams; and granddaughter Danielle C. Cocks, Manasquan.

John Curtis Richards

Hampstead, N.C. resident John Curtis Richards, formerly of Sea Girt, died Thursday, March 3, in the New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

He was 77 years old.

Mr. Richards was predeceased by his parents, Tyler Richards and Amalie Mahr Richards; sister Eleanor Richards Knox; and brother-in-law W. Melborne Knox.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Cook Richards; daughter Jill Richards, Atlanta; son Alan Richards and his wife Christine, Sea Girt; two grandchildren, Tyler and Jordan; two sisters, Virginia Wiedmann and husband Carl, Manasquan; Joanne Beatty and husband Tom, PA; brother Tyler Richards and wife Evelyn, PA.

A Mass of the resurrection will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 30, at St. Uriel’s Episcopal Church, Sea Girt.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the building fund at All Saints Parish, 2623 North College Road, Wilmington, N.C., 28404.
