Betty Jane (nee Hildreth) Sheppard

Former Bridgeton Resident

Betty Jane (nee Hildreth) Sheppard, 73, of Glen Mills, PA died Saturday June 14, 2003 at Taylor Hospital in Ridley Park, PA of complications from injuries sustained in a car accident eight months ago.

Born in Bridgeton, N.J., she was married for forty-four years to Milton H. Sheppard Jr., who predeceased her in 1993. She was the daughter of Helen Rogers Hildreth of Bridgeton and the late Cefred Hildreth. A 1946 graduate of Bridgeton High School, she lived in Ridley Park and later in Glen Mills, PA in Concord Township.

Mrs. Sheppard was a devoted member of the Elam United Methodist Church for thirty-seven years, where she sang alto in the Jubilate Choir and played the heaviest bells with the Hallelujah Ringers bell choir. She previously edited the church newsletter.

A writer, she made her own greeting cards and wrote several poems and essays over the years. Her life revolved around her nine children and their families and her church. She was also an animal lover.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by six daughters, Kathryn Marshall of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Karen Roth of Wilmington, DE, Judith McGovern of Ellicott City, MD, Lorraine Lindhult of Hatboro, PA, Susan Draus of Coatesville, PA and Nancy Manzano of Glen Mills, PA, three sons, Steven Sheppard of Lancaster, PA, Barry Sheppard of Glen Mills, PA and David Sheppard of Wilmington, DE, seventeen grandchildren, two sisters, Dianne Johnson and Elizabeth Lloyd both of Bridgeton, N.J., two brothers, Cefred K. Hildreth of Miami, FL and Jerry Hildreth of Bridgeton, N.J. She was predeceased by a grandson, Keith Lindhult and a brother, Ronald Hildreth.

Two funeral services will be held. Rev. Sharon L. Vandegrift will conduct services Wednesday evening June 18th at 7:30 at the Elam United Methodist Church, 1073 Smithbridge Road, Glen Mills, PA. Friends will be received at the church from 6:30 P.M. until 7:30 P.M..

Funeral services will also be held Thursday morning June 19th at 11 o’clock at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton where friends will be received between 10 and 11.

Rev. Dr. Kevin Yoho of Bethany Presbyterian Church in Bridgeton will officiate.

The interment will be made at Cedar Hill cemetery in Cedarville, N.J.

Memorial contributions in Mrs. Sheppard’s name may be made to the music program at Elam United Methodist Church, 1073 Smithbridge Road, Glen Mills, PA 19342.

Chlorenda Ravior Herrman

Former Bridgeton Resident
Chlorenda D. “Frendie” Ravior Herrman, 88, of Carney’s Point and formerly of Bridgeton went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday afternoon June 17, 2003 at Christiana Hospital in Christiana, Delaware. She had been hospitalized since last Friday.

The daughter of the late Louis Stephenson and the late Carrie (nee Horner) Stephenson Wallace, she was born in Bridgeton and was preceded in death by her first husband, Frederick J. Ravior in 1950. She later married Purdum Herrman, who also predeceased her, dying in 1978. Mrs. Herrman had been a resident of Carney’s Point since 1955 and prior to that lived in Bridgeton.

She worked as a machine operator at the former Seibel and Stern Company – Little Star Frock Clothing in Bridgeton for eighteen years. Prior to that she was employed by the M.C. Schrank Company in Bridgeton.

She attended Bridgeton High School and was a former member of the former Laurel Hill United Methodist Church in Bridgeton. For the past several years her membership has been with the Emanuel United Methodist Church in Penns Grove. Mrs. Herrman was a member of the Ladies of the Moose, the Women’s Club of Penns Grove and AARP, Carney’s Point chapter. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, growing African violets and traveling.

Survivors include one son, Frederick J. Ravior and his wife Barbara of Hopewell Township, two granddaughters, Sheri Barbeck and her husband Joe of Upper Deerfield Township and Debbie Zielinski and her husband Tony of Missouri, three great grandchildren, Brittney Hannah, Joseph and Joshua Barbeck. Additional survivors include one step daughter, Margaret Tripet of Pennsville, one step son, Richard Herrman of Salem, one sister, Carolyn Thomas of Bridgeton, one brother Martin Clements of Seaford, DE, step grandchildren, Sharon Gill, Frank and David Tripet, Peggy Moore and Richard Herrman Jr., step great grandchildren, Tania Riek, Monica, Brian and Elizabeth Tripet, Kimberly and Michael Gill, Ramond Knappenberger, Michaely and Nicholas Moore, Autumn and Haliey Tripet and step great great grandchildren, Lauren and Lukas Riek, Treshon Evans and Raymond Knappenberger IV. She was predeceased by a brother, James Stephenson.

Funeral services will be held Friday morning June 20th at 11 o’clock at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton.

Pastor Truitt Andress of the Emanuel United Methodist Church of Penns Grove will officiate.

The interment will be made at Overlook cemetery in Bridgeton.

Friends will be received at the funeral home one hour prior to the services

E. Shirley Goldstein

Homemaker
E. Shirley Goldstein (nee Hickman), 78, of Deerfield Township died Friday morning June 20, 2003 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia where she had been a patient for twenty-seven days. She had been in declining health since March and was preceded in death by her husband, Myer M. Goldstein, two weeks ago.

Mrs. Goldstein was born in Cedarville and was the daughter of the late Daniel and Eva Hickman. A lifetime area resident, she had lived at her current address for nearly fifty-seven years. She was a 1944 graduate of Bridgeton High School and had worked briefly for the J.J. Newberry store in Bridgeton and also at the former Cedarville 5 & 10. For most of her life she was a homemaker and was devoted to her husband and dedicated to her daughters. In later years she assisted her husband with the operation of his business, Vineland Pike Motors in Deerfield Township.

She formerly attended Congregation Beth Abraham in Bridgeton and was a musician who loved to play the piano. Mrs. Goldstein enjoyed raising her dachshunds, working in her flower gardens and bird watching.

For the last year and a half Mrs. Goldstein provided care to her loving husband to whom she was married for over fifty-six years.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda R. Nardelli and her husband George III of Upper Deerfield Township and Sharon I. Swydersky of Pittsgrove, three grandsons, George Nardelli IV, Lee M. Nardelli and Edward M. Swydersky Jr. and one sister, M. Ruth Goldstein of Cherry Hill. Mrs. Goldstein was predeceased by a sister, Helen Teti and two brothers, J. Carl Hickman and an infant brother, Henry Hickman.

Private funeral services will be held at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton with Student Rabbi Steven J. Kirschner of Congregation Beth Abraham of Bridgeton officiating.

The interment will be made at the Rosenhayn Hebrew cemetery in Deerfield Township.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1400 W. Landis Avenue, Vineland, N.J. 08360.

Shiva will be observed at Mrs. Goldstein’s late residence in Deerfield Township.

Wilberta “Billie” Mills Dickinson

Homemaker
Wilberta “Billie” Mills Dickinson, 83, of Shiloh went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday morning June 24, 2003.

The wife of the late Everett H. Dickinson, who died in 1988, she was born in Salem and was the daughter of the late Wilbert and Bertha Stewart Mills. Mrs. Dickinson was a graduate of Salem High School with the Class of 1937 and was a lifetime area resident. She resided in Shiloh most of her life.

She was a homemaker and worked for several years at the Bond Linen Store in Bridgeton. She also assisted her husband with the family dairy farm.

Mrs. Dickinson was a member of the Seventh Day Baptist Church of Shiloh and the Willing Workers Sabbath Class. She was also a member of the Shiloh Senior Citizens. She loved quilting and knitting.

Survivors include four daughters, Ruth Ann Davis of Hopewell Twp., Elizabeth Bidwell and her husband Gary of Shiloh, Lois Mazza and her husband Frank of Stow Creek Twp. and Carol Wendell and her husband Ralph “Bunky” of Shiloh, one son, Everett C. “Bus” Dickinson and his wife Linda of Shiloh, eleven grandchildren, Sandra Layton, Linda Garrison, J. Scot Davis, Jim and Richard Bidwell, Greg and Jeremy Dickinson, Frank Mazza, Kellie Mitchell and Ryan and Robyn Wendell and seven great grandchildren, Jennifer and Matthew Layton, Kevin and Joshua Garrison, Kaitlyn, Jason and Carson Davis. She was predeceased by sisters, Mabel Mills, Etta Ansink and Ruth Dayton and a brother, Stewart Mills.

A memorial service will be held Saturday afternoon June 28th at 4 o’clock at the Seventh Day Baptist Church of Shiloh, East Avenue, Shiloh.

Pastor Donald Chroniger will officiate.

The interment will take place privately at the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions are suggested to the Seventh Day Baptist Church of Shiloh Memorial Fund, c/o Steve Moncrief, 385 Jericho Road, Bridgeton, N.J. 08302 or HospiceCare of S.J., 2848 S. Delsea Drive, Vineland, N.J. 08360.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Freitag Funeral Home, Bridgeton.

John Mudry

World War II Veteran
John Mudry, 77, of Bridgeton died Tuesday evening June 24, 2003 at his home where he had been under the care of hospice. He had been in declining health since February.

Mr. Mudry was born in Millville and was the son of the late Stephen and Anna Papaila Mudry and the husband of Marjorie (nee Watson) Mudry. A 1945 graduate of Millville High School he had been a resident of Bridgeton since 1949 and had lived at his current address since 1979.

He served in the U.S. Merchant Marine during World War II transporting ammunition.

Mr. Mudry was employed at the former Owens-Illinois Glass Company in Bridgeton from high school until he retired in 1984. He worked in every department at Owens and retired as the Assistant Supervisor in the Plasti-Shield Division.

A member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Bridgeton, he enjoyed yard work and working in his garden.

Mr. and Mrs. Mudry would have celebrated fifty-four years of marriage this coming September 16th.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Glenn M. Mudry of Bridgeton and John W. “JB” Mudry and his fiancé Jill Green of Hammonton, three grandchildren, Glenn W. Mudry Jr. of South Carolina, Mandy Mudry and Rachael Mudry both of Millville, two sisters, Olga Koscianski of Bridgeton and Helen Mudry of Millville and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister Mary Bereza and a brother Stephen Mudry.

Funeral services will be held Friday morning June 27th at 11 o’clock at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton with Pastor Don Knott of the Trinity United Methodist Church officiating.

The interment will be made at Overlook cemetery in Bridgeton.

Friends will be received at the funeral home Thursday evening between 7 and 9.
