THOMAS "TOM" TARLETON, 100, died Saturday at home in Taos. He was born in Elizabethtown, Territory of New Mexico, on Oct. 14, 1902. He was a lifetime resident and rancher in northern New Mexico. After serving in the Army Mounted Engineers, he went to mechanics school in Kansas City. He worked for the Fred Harvey Co. and the Park Service at the Grand Canyon where he met his beloved wife, Toni. When he returned to Taos in 1930 he opened Tarleton Motor Co., which he ran with his father until he started ranching full time in the late 1940s. He was a charter member and fire chief of the Taos Volunteer Fire Department.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Toni in 1994.
He is survived by sons, Thomas A. Tarleton and wife Mary Lou of Taos, and G. Michael Tarleton and wife Anne of Taos; daughter, Nancy T. Feight of Albuquerque; sister, Marian T. Fox of Albuquerque; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many other relatives.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at the First Presbyterian Church in Taos. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Taos Hospice, 630 Paseo del Pueblo Sur, Taos 87571 or New Mexico Talking Book Library 1209 Camino Carlos Rey, Santa Fe 87505.

DAN TRUJILLO, 53, of Espaņola died Saturday.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Soleme and Avelino Maestas.
He is survived by his mother and father, Placida and Eddie Trujillo of Valley Estates; brother, Eddie A. Trujillo and wife Grace of Valley Estates; sister, Yvonne Trujillo Vigil and husband David of Espaņola; two sons, Ray Daniel Trujillo and wife Jenny, and Timothy Trujillo all of Albuquerque; two granddaughters; and many other relatives.
Services have been held. Interment was at the San Pedro Cemetery in Chamita.

DWAYNE TROWBRIDGE VIER, 89, died peacefully in his sleep on Oct. 3, 2003, after a long illness with pneumonia. He was born in Washington, D.C., and received his Ph.D. in chemistry from Columbia University. In 1945, he moved to Los Alamos, where he worked as a physical chemist at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Prior to moving to Los Alamos, Vier was in Nobel Laureate Harold Urey's group working on the Manhattan Project at Columbia University. He was a group leader in the Chemistry Metallurgy Division working with polonium and tritium as well as the Rover Project on Nuclear Propulsion at LANL until 1972.
After retirement, he served as a consultant to the International Technology Division of Los Alamos National Lab. He retired after a 37-year distinguished career there. He spent the last four years of his life in Escondido, Calif., to be near his two sons.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Marion Corson Vier; their two sons, David Corson Vier and wife Deborah of Escondido, Calif., and Alan Dwayne Vier and wife Suzanne of Bell Canyon, Calif.; a brother, William Frederick Vier, Jr. and wife Katherine of Fort Wayne, Ind.; a sister, Marian Louise Benson of West Valley City, Utah; four granddaughters; three great-granddaughters; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be noon Wednesday at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 S. Redwood Road, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Donations in Dwayne's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 8514 Commerce Avenue, San Diego, CA 92121.

AGNEDA "NANA" ALDERETE, 86, of Las Vegas, N.M., died Thursday at the Northeastern Regional Hospital following a brief illness.
She was born in Ojitos Frios on June 30, 19l7, to the late Adolfo Ortiz and Virginia Jiron Ortiz. She was married in Denver on Feb. 2, 1946, to the late Joe Alderete. A lifelong Catholic, she was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Adolfo and Virginia Ortiz; husband, Joe Alderete; daughter, Kathy Bustamante; brothers, Eloy Ortiz and Epimenio Ortiz.
She is survived by son, George Alderete and wife Gloria of Las Vegas, N.M.; son-in-law, Alex Bustamante, whom she considered a son, of Santa Fe; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brother, Tony Ortiz and wife Leonore of Mesa, Ariz.; sisters, Rita Winters of Seattle, Wash., and Stella Lovato of Albuquerque; and many other relatives and friends.
Rosary devotional services will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Our Lady of Sorrows Church. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Our Lady of Sorrows Church. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

GILBERT L. "COW" BACA SR., 66, of Santa Fe, died at his home on Thursday following a lengthy illness. He began his long and distinguished career with the state Highway Department and retired after 26 years. He worked for then-Rep. Bill Richardson, D-N.M., as his district office manager and campaign manager. At the request of Gov. Bruce King, he served as liaison between the state Highway Department and the governor's office. He then served as sergeant-at-arms for the state House of Representatives for 18 years. He was a member of the Faternal Order of Eagles, an honorary member of the Faternal Order of Police and a member of La Union de Protectiva.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernesto and Delphine Baca; his in-laws, Deacon Oswaldo and Rafelita Montoya; sister, Rita Baca Crespin; two infant sons, beloved nephew JoJo Montoya and sister-in-law Antonia "Toni" Montoya.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Marie; his loving and devoted children, Gibo and Norma Baca, Lydia and Victor Lioce, Jo Ann and Ray Gallegos, Donald and Pollyanna Baca, Teresa and Don Padilla, and Mike and Marisa Baca; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. today at Berardinelli Family Chapel followed by a rosary at 7 p.m.
He will lie in state in the Rotunda of the state Capitol on Monday from 1 to 5 p.m.
A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Monday at Santa Maria de la Paz Catholic Church on Richards Avenue.
Mass will be celebrated at noon Tuesday at Santa Maria de la Paz.
Burial will follow at Rosario Cemetery.
Memorial contributions can be made in Gilbert's name to Santa Maria de la Paz Building Fund and The Hospice Center.

ROSE Q. MARTINEZ, of Chama, died Thursday.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Diego Martinez; parents, Placido and Rosita Quintana; infant son, Placidito Martinez; and a brother, Frank Quintana.
Surviving her are a son, Diego Martinez and wife Cecilia of Chama; daughter, Georgia M. Wells of Chama; sister, Bernie Lopez of California; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many other relatives and friends.
Cremation has taken place.
A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Saint Patrick Church in Chama.
Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday also at the Saint Patrick Church in Chama.
Burial will follow at the Los Ojos Cemetery.

BERINIE G. MONTOYA, 84, of Pecos, died Thursday.
She is survived by her daughter, Gloria C De Baca; granddaughters, Debra and husband Eddie Tellez, Diana and husband Marty Tallman, Mona C De Baca and Chris De La Mora; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and sisters, Jean Cheshier, Sophia Hodges and Ramon Gonzales.
A rosary will be recited on at 8 p.m. Monday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Pecos.
Mass will be celebrated at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church.
Burial will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
