BEATRICE LOUISE SMITH, 90, of Los Alamos died Wednesday with her family by her side.
She was born in Chikkope, Mass., and graduated high school in Hunington, Mass. She married Chester Ray Smith on July 8, 1933. They were married for 71 years. In 1940, she moved with her husband and family from Massachusetts to San Diego, where she lived until 1950. In 1950, the family moved from San Diego to Los Alamos. She worked for the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (now Los Alamos National Laboratory) for 21 years.
After her retirement she loved staying at home and working on her arts and crafts. She made many baby afghans, which were a sought-after item.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Robert Burns, Wes Burns and Bud Burns; sisters, Doris George, Kitty Burns and Geraldine Besaucon; and her mother and father. She is survived by children Norman Smith and wife Jacque, Barbara Caldwell and friend Roland, Virginia Harkleroad and husband Stan, and Robert Smith and friend Marty; 10 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
Visitation will take place from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. today at Block Salazar Mortuary. Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Guaje Pines Cemetery in Los Alamos.

JUBENCIO CHACON JR. , 45, of Rodarte died Thursday. He was a member of the San Antonio de Padua Catholic Church and a choir member.
He is preceded in death by his father, Jubencio Chacon; sister, Violet Vargas; and brother, Florencio Chacon.
He is survived by his mother, Edubigen Chacon; brother, Ramon Chacon; sisters, Teofila Gonzales, and Lorraine Archuleta all of Rodarte, Eloisa Matthews and husband Lalo of Albuquerque, Agustina White of Big Lake, Minn., and Fidela Gonzales and husband Orlando of Vadito; sister-in-law, Connie Chacon; and many nephews, nieces and other relatives.
A rosary will be recited 7 p.m. Monday at San Antonio de Padua Catholic Church in Peñasco.
Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday at the same church.

CONRADA "LALA" ORTIZ, 88, of Santa Fe died Thursday at home.
She was born March 4, 1916, in Nambé.
She was a homemaker and a seamstress, a wonderful mother and grandmother.
She was well-known for the delicious food she prepared. She enjoyed tending her garden. She loved to play bingo.
Her family and friends will miss her favorite expressions, "Dear Lord," and "Green lights, good luck."
She was preceded in death by her husband Leo Ortiz; parents, Urbano and Teresita Ortiz; son, LeRoy Ortiz; son-in-law, Richard Romero; grandson, Kenny Ortiz; and sisters and brothers, Eva, Rosina, Kika, Connie, Catalino and Tony.
She is survived by her daughters, Geraldine and Ponce Lujan and Rosina Romero; sons, Orlando and Cecelia Ortia, Joe Leo and Anna Ortiz; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters, Mattie Ulibarri, Elda and Mike Carillo, and Dolores and Joe A. Lujan; brother, Armando and Jane Ortiz; sister-in-law, Angie Ortiz; special friend and neighbor, Eva Anaya; her caregivers; and many other relatives and friends.
Visitation is at 7 p.m. Monday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with a 7:30 p.m. rosary.

RAMONA ORTIZ, 87, of Serafina died Wednesday at Vida Encantada Rehab and Nursing Facility.
She was born May 28, 1917, in El Paso and married Cleofas Ortiz on July 1, 1961, in Clovis. She enjoyed raising her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lazaro and Isabel Gonzales Torres; and her husband, Cleofas Ortiz.
She is survived by stepsons, Roberto Ortiz and wife Estella of Santa Fe, Leroy Ortiz and wife Nancy of Pueblo, Colo., Cipriano Ortiz and wife Margie and Jerry Ortiz and wife Marilyn of Bernal, and Mike Ortiz and wife Anna of Milan; stepdaughters, Predicanda Trujillo and husband Manuel and Esmerelda Velarde of Bernal; a grandson she raised, Roberto Ortiz Jr. of Serefina; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Ramona Bustamonte of Serafina.
Interment of her cremated remains is 10 a.m. today in the Church of Christ Cemetery in Las Vegas, N.M.

ROQUE NICOLAS ABEYTA, 85, of Los Ojos died Friday after a long illness.
He served in the U.S. Army and was a World War II veteran. He earned the combat infantry badge and was decorated with the Purple Heart, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with two bronze campaign stars, American Theatre Ribbon, American Defense Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Vera Abeyta-Rivera.
He is survived by his wife, Agapita; daughters, Cecilia Grimes and husband, Howard, and Marie Garcia and husband, Denton; three grandchildren; brothers, Gabriel Abeyta of Los Ojos and Nicolas Abeyta of Albuquerque; and many other relatives and friends.

He retired from the highway department in 1983.
