Norman Charles Elliott, 78, a resident of Albuquerque for 38 years, died Monday, July 30, 2001. Mr. Elliott was born January 27, 1923 to Beatrice and Frank Elliott. He is survived by his sons, Scot J. Elliott, Steven R. Elliott and wife, Mary; daughter, Pat Jenkins and husband, Fred; daughter-in-law, Helen Elliott; and six grandchildren. Mr. Elliott was married for 49 years to Barbara May (Dozier) Elliott who preceded him death in 1993. He was also preceded in death by a son, Terry L. Elliott in 1988. Mr. Elliott served with the US Army in WWII in the Philippines and Japan. He came home to assume the management of the family grocery business in Breesport, NY, where he participated in many community activities, including the Volunteer Fire Department, coaching Little League Baseball and the Methodist Church. In 1964, Mr. Elliott moved to Albuquerque to serve and care for clients in insurance sales. Memorial Services will be held Friday, 10:30 a.m., at French Mortuary, Wyoming Chapel, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE. Celeste Fetherolf. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, August 3, 2001, 10:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE in memory of our loving mother, Celeste Fetherolf, who passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 29, 2001. She is survived by her brother, Michael Del Mastro of Albuquerque; sister, Josephine Meadows of Albuquerque; seven children, LoAnna, Mary, Roberta, Kenneth, Michael, Edward, and Jeanette; 15 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Celeste was loved, respected and will be greatly missed.

Samuel "Sambo" Gardner, 39, passed away July 29, 2001. He was born in Albuquerque and worked as a roofer, landscaper, and lived as a free spirit. He was preceded in death by his son, Sammy Gardner Jr.; mother, Corine Gardner; uncle, Bobby Ortiz; and Auntie, Marie. Sam is survived by his father, Felix M. Gardner; brothers, Manuel Gardner, Alvie Gardner; other family and friends who loved and will miss him. A Rosary will be recited, and Mass will be celebrated at Queen of Heaven Catholic Church on Thursday, August 2, 2001. Desi J. Martinez, a resident of Albuquerque, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at Presbyterian Hospital after a four-month ordeal following heart surgery. He was born in Raton, NM to Salomon Martinez and Virginia Ortiz. At a young age, Desi moved to Santa Fe where he metCandy, the love of his life. He served in the US Navy in WWII and still talked about his experiences in Australia. Candy and Desi lived in California for 13 years where they managed several apartment complexes, but then returned to Albuquerque where he subsequently retired from Clifford & Co. After retirement, Desi and Candy would finish their morning chores and then run errands or head to the malls where he would 'sit and watch the pretty girls go by' while she shopped. Until this year, they made an annual trip to Las Vegas and California. Desi was a happy man, always joking, always had a smile for everyone, and he especially loved kids. He is survived by his beloved wife, Candy; daughter, Jean Lopez and Ernie; sons, Ernie and wife, Cindy, Joseph D. (Jos), John and wife, Renee, and Gilbert and wife, Stephanie; sons-in-law, Jake Gallegos and Gilbert DeLaCruz. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren who loved him very much: Richard and Cindy Lou, Donald and Amy, Garry and Tay, Larry and Lisa, and Tim and Cynthia Gallegos; Gloria, Gilbert, Thomas, and Gabriel and Darlene DeLaCruz; Herman and Ruby, Mingo, and David Garcia; June and Isauro Madrid; Nancy and James Archuleta; Jeff and Angie Martinez; and Linda and Lou Lewis; and to many to count great-grandchildren. Desi is also survived by a sister, Lydia Tafoya of Raton. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Irene DeLaCruz; grandson, Pete DeLaCruz; brothers, Albert and Ernest Martinez; and son-in-law, Henry Lopez. Mass will be celebrated Friday, August 3, 2001, at 10:00 a.m., at Queen of Heaven Catholic Church. Interment will take place at 1:00 p.m., at Santa Fe National Cemetery. William "Bill" Howard Oliver, Jr. of Longmont died Sunday, July 29, 2001 at Longmont United Hospital due to complications from an extended illness resulting from cancer. He was 41. Born on November 12, 1959, in Trenton, NJ he was the son of William H. Oliver, Sr. and Mildred M. Mangione Oliver. He married Karen Sue Koehler on September 3, 1988, in Boulder. He earned his bachelor of science degree from Rutger's University in New Brunswick, NJ and a master's degree in accounting from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. Mr. Oliver formerly worked for NW Transportation Co. of Denver and as vice president of finance/controller for Westway Express Inc. of Denver. He moved to Longmont from Albuquerque in 1998. He also previously lived in Boulder. Mr. Oliver was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Longmont and of the Colorado CPA Society. He enjoyed tennis, golf, music, hiking, biking and inline skating with his family. Survivors include his wife of Longmont; three sons, Billy Oliver, Kirk Oliver and Sam Oliver, all of Longmont; and two daughters, Emily Oliver and Lydia Oliver of Longmont; his mother of Trenton, NJ; and one sister, Barbara A. Tschoepe of Boulder. He was preceded in death by his father in 1984. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 6739 South Boulder Road, Boulder. The Rev. Brian Morrow of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church of Longmont will be the Celebrant. Services conclude with burial in the Sacred Heart of Mary Church Cemetery. Helen M. Ortega, 63, a resident of Albuquerque since 1973 died, Tuesday, July 31, 2001. She is survived by her daughters, Theresa Riccio and husband, John of New York, NY and Christine Ortega and David Peterson of Rio Rancho; granddaughter, Lisa Ricco; sisters, Connie Patterson and Sherry Henriquez; brothers, Harry, Jimmy, Michael and Lawrence Madine; and her beloved dog, Casey She is preceded in death by her sister, Catherine Soto. She was an avid artist and homemaker. Services will be held Thursday, 2:00 p.m. at French Mortuary-Westside Chapel, 9300 Golf Course Rd. NW with Deacon Bob Lewis officiating. Gunnar W. "Big D" Paulsen, 73, Passed away Friday, July 27, 2001. Gunnar was a resident of Albuquerque for 38 years and moved to Huntington Beach in 1996. Gunnar was member of the Albuquerque Boat Club, Republican Party, and spent the years of retirement traveling in and around anything that had fresh or salt water. Gunnar was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 24, 1928 to Gunnar H. and Magda (Knudsen) Paulsen who immigrated to Illinois from their native Norway. Gunnar was a graduate of the University of Illinois and soon thereafter married Blanche Kubala. A son, Gunnar Phillip and a daughter, Lynda Ann were born of this union. The family moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where Gunnar developed and owned his own business. Blanche passed away in 1995. Jim and Jacque Scott were long-time friends of Gunnar and Blanche. After Jim's death, Jacque and Gunnar were united in marriage on February 22, 1996. Gunnar's love of the water and sailing continued when he moved to Huntington Beach. Gunnar is survived by his wife, Jacque; his son, Gunnar Phillip and daughter-in-law, Janie; his daughter, Lynda and son-in-law, Marc Tiefa; his granddaughter, Alexis Tiefa; and his sister, Anita Crippen. Cremation occurred with the Neptune Society, with his ashes being spread out at sea. A Memorial Service was held in Huntington Beach at Redeemer Luthern Church on Monday July 30, 2001. Toribio Quintero, 64, a resident of Albuquerque, died Tuesday July 31, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Helen Quintero; daughter, Suzanne Quintero; sons, Mark Quintero, Carlos Quintero and wife, Cindy; grandchildren, Michael Anthony Quintero, Breeanna Quintero, Michaela Quintero, Audrianna Quintero, Esperanza Quintero, and Isabel Quintero all of Albuquerque. Toribio worked for the State of New Mexico in the Public Defenders Office for over eight years. Cremation has taken place. Albino Salas Jr., 77, a resident of Bernardo, NM went on to be with our Lord on Tuesday, July 31, 2001. He was a member of the San Antonio Catholic Church in Abeytas, NM. Albino retired from the Bureau of Reclamation after 25 years of outstanding service. He also worked for the National Weather Service and the U.S. Geological Survey. He was a well-known businessman, owning and operating the Bernardo Store, which was founded by his father Alvino Salas in 1933. Albino's love for farming and ranching led him to have a small herd of cattle; all of which were named and all came running when they were called. His gardening skills were well known in the family and his zucchini grew big and sometimes too big. He shared the bounty of his garden with everyone." His grandchildren were the apple of his eye and he never missed an opportunity to dance with them or load them up with goodies from his store. He will be dearly missed, because he touched all of our hearts dearly." He was preceded in death by his mother, Elvira Baca; father, Alvino Salas; brother, Santa Cruz; and sister, Crucita Ortega. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Catalina" Lena" Abeyta Salas; his daughters, Terry Barela and her husband, Eddie of Bosque Farms; Consie Gabaldon and her husband, Wilmer of Los Chavez; Sandra Sanchez and her husband, Elauterio of Adelino; Geraldann Caldwell and her husband, Robert of Las Cruces; Geraldine Muniz and her husband, Rick of Stockton, CA; his son, Andrew Salas and his wife, Martha of Bernardo; 20 grandchildren and 13 great- grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Didio and his wife, Annie of Albuquerque; two sisters, Lola Grice and her husband, Jim of Albuquerque; and Alice Hall and her husband, Bill of San Antonio, TX. and many loving nieces and nephews. Edwin "Ed" Williams, 83, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, died Wednesday, August 1, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Williams of Albuquerque; sons, Michael Williams of Sacramento, CA and Kirk Williams and wife, Rosanna of Brackettville, TX; daughter, Wendy Williams of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Donna, L-Etta, Travis, Colin, Lydia, Whitney and Gregory; and great-grandchildren, Morgan and Blake. Mr. Williams served his country during WWII in the US Navy in the South Pacific. Following the war, he was a Professor of Animal Husbandry at Colorado State University for 13 years. Mr. Williams was the General Manager at Creamland Dairies in the late -50s. He was a Farm & Ranch Broker for over 40 years and was still active at the time of his death. David Crockett Wood, Lt. Col Ret. (USAR), 84, and a 50 year resident of Albuquerque passed away in a local hospital on Sunday, July 8, 2001. He is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Molly V. Wood; and their children, Paul C. Wood, and Ann V. Wood both of Albuquerque; son, John O. Wood and his wife, Kathy of Vienna, VA; and beloved grandson, David O. Wood of Albuquerque; Colonel Wood's sister, Virginia Wood Clark, also survives him of St. Joseph, MO. Graveside Services including a military honor guard with the Reverend E. J. HENRY DAVID GOMEZ, 65, of Santa Fe died Tuesday. He was born Oct. 15, 1935, in Santa Fe. He graduated from Santa Fe High School. He then joined the U.S. Navy and served in the Korean War. He worked for Eberline Industries for several years, then obtained his real estate broker license and sold real estate for many years. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Mary Ortiz, and Josie Gomez; brother-in-law, Ricky Montoya; and nephew-in-law, Albert Gomez. He is survived by his sons, David and wife Hitomi of Osaka, Japan, Bill and wife Shawn of Cedar Crest, and Rick and fiance Jodi Sieben of San Francisco; brother, Joe Gomez and wife Andy of Santa Fe; sisters Lucy Flores and husband John P. of Albuquerque, Virginia Sandoval and husband L.J. (Sandy), and Alice Montoya, all of Santa Fe; grandson, Kai Gomez of Cedar Crest; granddaughters Hali Anne Gomez of Cedar Crest, and Selena Gomez of Osaka, Japan; and numerous other relatives and friends. HARRY NOLAN SR., 76, of Mora died Tuesday at the Northeastern Regional Hospital in Las Vegas, N.M., following a brief illness. He was born Aug. 3, 1924, to Delfino Nolan and Prudenciana Lucero Nolan in Las Vegas. He married Genevieve Archuleta on Jan. 10, 1948 in Santa Cruz, N.M. He was a self-employed building contractor for 18 years, retiring in 1989. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of St. Gertrude Catholic Church in Mora and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He loved ranching and cattle. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Rose Lucero, and Ruth Lucero; brothers Joe Lucero, and Tom Lucero; and son-in-law, Robert Vigil. He is survived by his wife, Genevieve A. Nolan of Mora; daughter, Rebecca Vigil of Holman; sons Harold W. Nolan of Mora, and Harry P. Nolan Jr. and wife Onesima of Rociada; grandchildren Rene Vigil and wife Christine, and Rachel Vigil, all of Holman, Jeanette Nolan, and Margaret Tapia, both of Las Vegas, Darian Nolan and wife Victoria of Bernal, Amanda Nolan, and Ryan Nolan, both of Mora; great-grandchildren Flavio Vigil and Julio Vigil, both of Holman; brother, Herman Nolan and wife Fedelina of California; cousin, Mary Henderson and husband George of Las Vegas; and numerous other relatives and friends. FRED ALLEN TILLMAN, 64, of Santa Fe died Wednesday. He was born Aug. 4, 1936 in Pawhuska, Okla. He earned his master of business administration from Wharton Graduate School. He was a professor of legal studies and financial planning at Georgia State University in Atlanta from 1970 to 1999. He was named Professor Emeritus following his retirement in 2000. He served on the board of the College of Financial Planning, Board of Regents and the Board of Examiners of Certified Financial Planning Board of Standards. He was a member of the Bar of the State of Georgia and also an active mediator and arbitrator in the Santa Fe area. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; daughters, Cynthia T. Twardokus and husband Duane, and Patricia Tillman; grandchildren Geoffrey and Katrina; and sister, Mary Tillman Fox. Graveside services at 2 p.m. today at the Rosario Cemetery. Tony Atler, 74, left to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 31, 2002. Tony was born in Dawson, NM and raised in Albuquerque, NM. He spent his life as a professional photographer and business man. He is survived by his children, Carl, Ann, Debbie and husband, Adan, Sandy, Anthony, Doug and former wife, Josie. Tony had many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Tony was a Veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces. Tony will be deeply missed. Sister Mary Agnes Curran, O.S.F., passed on to her peaceful rest on Tuesday, July 30, 2002 at Kaseman Presbyterian Hospital, surrounded by her dear friends. She had just celebrated her 50th anniversary of being a sister on July 20, 2002. She was born in Chicago, September 8, 1931. She attended Our Lady of Solace Grade School in Chicago where the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi taught. After High School, she joined the Sisters of St. Francis in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She taught school for many years in the Mid-West. She returned to her native Chicago, where she began working with Hispanic Communities. She grew to love the people and the culture. In 1970 she decided to dedicate her life to be with them. She spent some time learning the language, which led her to Oaxaca, Mexico. There she founded a Women's Center that remains in operation. After ten years of Missionary work there, she came to New Mexico to work with immigrants and victims of domestic violence. This work led her to join South Albuquerque Cooperative Ministry (SACM), with whom she founded St. Andrew's Food Pantry, part of the SACM. She developed an outreach to the people on the Pajarito Mesa. She joined in the peoples struggle for obtaining their basic human needs. She introduced solar technology to families with no electricity. Seeing the isolation of the people there, she took the Catholic Church's Renew Program and her love for Jesus to help build up this community. She organized the Pajarito Community Center to help the women obtain needed health services for themselves and their children. She supported all this through writing grants to Religious Sisters and other Foundations across the United States. She received funding from the Conrad Hilton Foundation which was used to purchase the red pick-up truck which became a sign of her presence with the people on the Mesa. She is survived by her Sisters in the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi; her brother, Jerry and wife, Cathy Curran; sisters-in-law, Pat and Marge Curran; niece, Nancy; and other nieces and nephews, and many loving friends. Services will be held at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church on 10th Street in Belen, NM. A viewing will begin on Saturday morning, August 3, 2002 at 8:00 a.m. with the Mass of the Resurrection being celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Belen Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Betty Susan Davis (a resident of West Mesa Care, Albuquerque) peacefully joined our Lord the afternoon of 22 July 2002. She was small of frame but large in heart. She was an advocate for child care, and prior to her paralysis she was a world-class cook. Her family honors her memory and rejoices in the knowledge that she now walks with our Lord. She was born in Toledo, Ohio, February 5, 1917. She will be interred with her husband in the National Cemetery, Santa Fe. She is survived by one brother; one son; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

Madge H. Denish, 93, a resident of Albuquerque since 1946, died Thursday, August 1, 2002. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Moyer and husband, Bob; son, Herb Denish and wife, Diane; grandchildren, Mark Moyer and wife, Jennifer, Suzanne Schreiber and husband, Tony, Spencer Schreiber and Sara Schreiber. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Marshall Denish. Madge was a member of First Baptist Church. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, a Christian and a lifelong Democrat. She will be missed. Services will be held Saturday, 2:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul NE. David Wayne Hammitt, age 48, of Los Lunas, NM, died July 24, 2002 from medical complications. David was born in Weisbaden, Germany, and lived all of his adult life in New Mexico. As a young man, David achieved the status of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts. David owned and operated Majestic Air, a heating and air conditioning company until 2000 when blindness caused him to close the business. Despite his loss of sight he continued to be friendly and personable, making an impression on everyone he met. A member of Grace Fellowship Church in Los Lunas, David was known for sharing with others the need for Jesus in their lives. David will be remembered as friendly, outgoing, and a man with a good sense of humor. He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Teresa Hammitt of Los Lunas; sons, Daniel Clay and David Jr.; daughters, Christin Nicole, Catherine Marie, Anne Etlinger and Lisa Jean; his parents, James G. and Ruby Francis Hammitt of Albuquerque; two sisters, Nikki Lynn Squyres of Albuquerque and Deborah Kay Shafer of Capitan, NM; his mother-in-law, Mabel and her husband, Wendell Mankin; two sisters-in-law; and one brother-in-law; numerous nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Claudia M. Hood, age 85, and an Albuquerque resident died July 30, 2002. Claudia is survived by her life partner, Jack Naylor; and his family, Carolyn Onstott of TX, Carissa Onstott of TX, cousin, Kathleen Green of NM, and Fr. Patrick Cooper of NC. Graveside services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 2, 2002 at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Fitzgerald & Son Funeral Directors 3113 Carlisle Blvd NE is handling her arrangements.

Reverend Dr. James Andrew, Visitation will be on Thursday, August 1, 2002 at the Strong-Thorne Mortuary 1100 Coal Av. SE from 5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Services will be held on Friday, August 2, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. at the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church 608 Avenida Cesar Chavez SE with Reverend David E. Walker pastor of Antioch Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow at the Sandia Memory Gardens Cemetery 9500 San Pedro NE. Strong-Thorne Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.

Betty D. (Argo) Kern passed away Monday, July 29, 2002 after a prolonged battle with numerous health problems. Betty was born in Albuquerque September 17, 1933 to Bernard and Juanita Argo, the third of their four children. Betty is preceded in death by her parents and her oldest brother who died in infancy. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Dean; their son, Steve; daughter, Tamara Urvanejo and husband, Vincent; grandson, Jason; granddaughter, Kelly; brothers, Bernard Argo and wife, JoAn, Jim Argo and wife, Anna of Tempe, AZ; many nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews. Betty attended grade school at Five Points, middle school at Ernie Pyle and graduated from Albuquerque High School in 1952. She went to work as a telephone operator for M.S.T.&T. right out of high school and worked there until she married Dean in 1953. During their marriage, Betty worked at an insurance company and a dance studio. Viewing and visitation will be Friday, August 2, 2002 at Strong Thorne Mortuary on Coal SE from 3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. The Service will be Saturday, August 3, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. at Strong Thorne Mortuary. Pallbearers will be Ronald Kern, Pete Argo, Sam Argo, Bert Argo, Jesse Argo and Clovis Salcido. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hospice or to a charity of choice.

Betty M. Kuhn went to be with the Lord July 31, 2002 surrounded by her husband and sons. Betty was born in Burlington, Iowa on November 1, 1926, daughter of Edna H. McGuire and W.T. McGuire. She is survived by her husband, Ray of Tijeras; son, Steve and wife, Gretchen of Springfield, MO; son, Jim of Tijeras; brother, James T. McGuire of Tulsa, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Matthew Kuhn and wife, Carol of Denver, Breean Kuhn of Williamsburg, VA and Ian and Peter Kuhn of Springfield, MO. Betty is also survived by niece, Kristie Armstrong of Tulsa, OK and nephew, Bill McGuire of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. She is also survived by a great-grandson; Spencer of Denver, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Ruth Colucci. She was a devoted wife and mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Betty spent over 30 years of her life battling the ravages of Multiple Sclerosis. Services will be held Saturday, 10:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul NE. Friends may visit French Mortuary, 1111 University Blvd. NE, Friday, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
