Louis W. Sattler

Age 64, a resident of Alcalde passed away on Monday, January 5, 2009. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Dorothy Sattler; wife, Lorraine Martinez-Sattler and son, Louie Sattler. Louis is survived by his daughter, April Sattler of Alcalde; brother, Jason Sattler and sister, Julie Card, both of Michigan; grandson, Estevan Sanchez; special niece, Tammy Ulibarri and grandnewphew, Justin Ulibarri, all of Alcalde; numerous other relatives and friends. Elizabeth Ann Perraglio

Age 49, a resident of Los Lunas, originally of Peñasco, passed away on Monday, January 5, 2009, following a lengthy illness. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Maximiliano E. and Demetria Roybal. Elizabeth is survived by her father, Juan Roybal of Peñasco; brothers, John Roybal Jr. and wife Mary Lou of Colorado, Phil Roybal of Colorado, Fares Roybal of Peñasco and Pete Roybal of Bernalillo; half-sister, Maxine Roybal of Peñasco; sisters, Eliza Valdez of Colorado, Emma Atencio of Dixon, Dorothy Montoya of Velarde, Mary Borrael of California, Flora Simental of Colorado, Mabel Zamora of Dixon, Toni Atencio of Santa Fe and Dila Romero of Albuquerque; numerous nephews, nieces and other relatives and friends. DION FABIAN MARTINEZ

Age 27, a resident of Española, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, January 5, 2009. He was preceded in death by his brother, Adrian Thomas Martinez; maternal grandparents, Evangeline and Ben Ortega and paternal grandfather, Rafael B. Martinez. Dion was a 1999 Pojoaque High School graduate and went on to achieve his Associate Degree at UNM LA and later became an Electronic Engineer at LANL. Dion is survived by his children, Ryen, Alyssa and Alyanna Martinez all of Española; Jeremiah Archuleta whom Dion considered like a son; parents, Conrad and Marlene Martinez of La Mesilla; sister, Melissa E. Martinez of Costa Rica; paternal grandmother, Eduvigen Martinez of Los Ojos and numerous cousins, uncles, aunts and loving relatives and friends. Age 41, a resident of Española, passed away on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 following a lengthy illness. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Emiliano and Andalesia Lopez; paternal grandparents, Margarito and Soledad Velasquez and special cousin, Patrick Lopez and father-in-law, Herminio Padilla Sr. Esther was a loving mother, daughter and sister, her children were her life. Her favorite place to be was at the Abiquiu Lake boating and tanning with family and friends. Esther will be dearly missed by her family and friends. KIMBERLY CASADOS

Age 35, a resident of Chamisal, passed away on Thursday, January 8, 2009. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Leonardita Martinez and Casimiro Casados; aunt, Eva Griego; uncles, Macario Griego and Lawrence Casados and cousins, Mikie Barela, Andrew Casados and Dion Martinez. Harold C. Lujan

Age 75, a resident of Los Alamos passed into the arms of the Lord on Saturday, January 10, 2009 surrounded by his loving family. At an early age Harold helped tend the family farm in Jaconita until he was called to serve in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. After his tour of duty, he returned to New Mexico with the desire to be a barber. He graduated Barber College in Pueblo, CO, and came to Los Alamos in November 1956 where for 52 years cut hair of many of the townspeople. He was always very proud to let all know that he was from Los Alamos. In October 2008, he was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, know as Lou Gehrig’s disease. He is survived by his two daughters, Sheila Jaramillo and husband Raymond of Belen, Kelly Naranjo and her husband Richard of Los Alamos and grandchildren, Michael Naranjo, Christopher Jaramillo and fiancé Deanna Arrey whom is a special family friend, both of Los Alamos, Deborah Englert and her husband Matthew of Phoenix and Vanessa Jaramillo of Belen. He is also survived by Ella Lujan, long-time friend, companion and lover. Siblings, Toby Lujan and wife Virginia of Santa Fe, Claudinia Perea and husband Ben of Bernalillo, Mary Augustine of Albuquerque, and many other loving family and friends also survive him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tobias and Asencionita Lujan; sister, Flossie Jaramillo; niece, Angela Lujan-Ogle and Ruby Lujan, mother of his children. Harold knew no stranger and all were welcome in his barber shop for something to eat or drink or for a game of chance. In 2000 he decided to semi-retire and sold his business of more than four decades. Afterward he worked three days a week for Ted Armijo of Ted’s Barber Shop and the two become good friends. He loved fishing, camping and hunting as was evidenced by his buffalo, oryx and elk trophies. When colder weather set in, he was always ready for a “matanza”. He would slaughter cows, sheep, goats and pigs. He was always generous with the meat and the full freezers of family and friends showed his generosity. Before his passing he made sure that his sons-in-law and grandsons knew this age old tradition. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. MERCEDES MARTHA ROYBAL

Age 16, a resident of Española, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, January 9, 2009. Mercedes brought laughter, love and kindness to the people around her, especially her family. She will be remembered as a generous and witty girl with a great sense of humor, bright and lovely smile and will be terribly missed. Mercedes is survived by her mother and step-father, Vanessa and Mario Manzanares; brother, Joshua D. Roybal of Española; grandparents who raised her, Alfred and Beatrice Roybal of Arroyo Seco; paternal grandparents, Zulma and Felipe Romero of Chimayo; beloved uncle, Alfred John Roybal and Katya Davis both of Española; aunt, Marsha Villarreal and Terry Allen; cousins, Peter, Ignacio and Johnny Villarreal of Abiquiu; fathers, Matthew Marquez and Tiny Romero both of Chimayo; step-sisters, Michelle and Danielle Romero of Albuquerque and numerous other relatives who Mercedes loved dearly. Antonio J. Garcia III

Age 50, a lifelong resident of Rio Chama passed away on Sunday, January 11, 2009 after a lengthy illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Manuel R. and Lucia Garcia and his sister, Roberta Garcia. Antonio was known for his laughter, humor and generosity. He successfully served his community as a school bus contractor for the Española Public School District and was actively involved in local politics. He loved ranching and longed for one last ride on his horse, Sport. Serving as pallbearers, Sammy Garcia, Ben D. Garcia, and Venceslado Garcia, Harold Maestas, J.D. Martinez Jr. and Adrian Lujan. Honorary pallbearers are Phil Gallegos, Lupe Vigil, Robert J. Manzanares, Jacobo Salazar, Miguel Salazar, great-nephews, Anthony Salazar, Austin and Damian Martinez and all the school bus drivers of the Espanola Public School District whom he worked with over the course of the last 32 years. Louisa Maestas Honaberger

Age 88, of Los Pachecos, died on January 13, 2009. She was born in Telluride, CO, to Prisciliano and Refugio Maestas, raised in Los Pachecos, and attended Alcalde Mission School and Espanola High School. She was a member of the Alcalde United Methodist Church (formerly the Alcalde Evangelical United Brethren Church for 64 years where she was a member of the women’s group, led Bible studies, taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School, and served as Financial Secretary, Administrative Board member and delegate to numerous Annual Conferences. She participated in the Senior Choir at the Espanola Senior Center and served several years as vice-president of the local chapter of the AARP. At age 83, she retired after a long career as a housekeeper. The beloved matriarch of her family, she authored a series of short stories entitled “Recuerdos de Grammie” recounting her life and family experiences. She will be remembered as an intelligent, independent, hard-working and beautiful woman who took pride in her appearance, had a great sense of humor, an unwavering faith in God and a great capacity to love and relate to people of all ages, backgrounds and walks of life. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Fauster H. Honaberger, originally from Elysburg, PA, infant son Johnny, sisters Agueda Maestas, Estephana Guillen, Adela Trujillo and Lizaida Maestas, brother Amarante Maestas; sister-in-law, Augustina Abeyta Maestas; brothers-in-law, Tony Martinez, Antonio Guillen, Lucas Trujillo and close friends Elmer Dee Parham, Georgette Fauber and Isabelita Ortiz. She is survived by her children Beaulah Sandoval and husband Eugene of Espanola, Faustina Lucero and husband Jose of Santa Clara Pueblo, Carol Behounek of Albuquerque, David Honaberger and wife Julia, Daniel Honaberger and wife Angie, Cynthia Lujan and husband Paul all of Los Pachecos and (Felicia) Denise O’Hara and husband Jamie of Las Cruces, 21 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, her God-daughter Teresa Medina of La Villita and a special friend Elefio Montoya of Fairview. Additionally, she is survived by her younger siblings for whom she assumed the role of mother upon the early death of their mother. They include Felipe Maestas of Layton, UT, Gusman Maestas (Helen Maestas) of Clearfield, UT, and Ruth Martinez of Lompac, CA. Many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive her.

DULCINEA J. “CANDIE” VIGIL

Age 80, a resident of Española, passed away on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 following a lengthy illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Pedro and Genoveva Gonzales; husband, Delfino A. Vigil and several brothers and sisters-in-law. Candie was a loving mother and will be missed by her precious son and everyone that knew her. She enjoyed crafts such as, sewing, painting, knitting, crocheting and baking. Mrs. Vigil is survived by her son, Ralph Vigil of Española; sisters, Mary Valdez of Española and Beroniz Ortega; raised like a daughter, Gloria Mendibles both of Arizona and several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. ALEJANDRO GARDUñO

Age 83, a resident of Nambe, passed away on Tuesday, January 13, 2009 peacefully at home with his family by his side. He was preceded in death by his wife, Aurelia Garduño; son, Alejandrino Garduño; parents, Joaquin and Aurelia Garduño; grandson, Carlos Garduño Jr.; brothers, Amabe and Jerry Garduño; sister, Fabiola; mother-in-law, Barbarita Garcia; brothers-in-law, Oliver Garcia, Ignacio Garcia; sisters-in-law, Rose Alice Baca and Gloria Kniffin. Mr. Garduño is survived by his children, Leonard Garduño and wife Evelyn, Joaquin “Jackie” Garduño, Carlos Garduño and wife Theresa, Guillermo Garduño and Sandra Romero all of Nambe; brother, Abelino Garduño and wife Adela of Nambe; sisters, Mela Lucero and husband Benny of Las Vegas, NM and Florence Gonzales and husband Jimmy of Nambe; brothers-in-law, Joe Garcia and wife Judy of Nambe and Pilar Baca of Nambe; sister-in-law, Lucille Garduño of Salida CO; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild and numerous other family members and friends. RICHARD LEE STICE

Age 87, a resident of Los Alamos passed away on Monday, January 12, 2009. He was preceded in death by his parents: Everett and Margaret Merrill Stice; former wife and friend, Emmy D. Stice; and a brother, Merrill Stice. Richard was a Petty Officer 1st Class serving on the USS West Virginia at Pearl Harbor. He later served on the USS Case in the Solomon and Aleutian Islands. He later attended UCLA in the V-12 Officer Candidate Program, and it is there where he met his future wife, Emmy Wieler. Richard was an avid skier and participated in numerous ski area work parties. In addition, he enjoyed hiking, golfing, walking, and taking in the breath taking views in the surrounding area. Richard retired from the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. During his retirement he enjoyed walking, looking at the wonderful views, and working on various chemistry projects. He will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him. He is survived by his sons: Paul E. Stice and wife Nancy C. of Idaho; and John Stice and wife Margaret of Troy, IL; daughter, Cindy J. Mills of Los Alamos; grandchildren: Jessica Stice of Milwaukee, WI, Marla Stice of Collinsville, IL and Catherine, Steven and Peter Stice all of Troy, IL; and numerous nieces, and other relatives and friends. John J. Sanchez

Age 75, of Espanola went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 17, 2009, after a short battle with cancer. John was preceded in death by his parents, Felix and Simonita Sanchez; a brother, George; sister, Minnie; nephew, Hector and other family and friends. John is survived by his daughter, Anna Martinez and husband Andrew; granddaughters, Andrea and Reanna; brother, Tony and wife Margaret; sister Rosalind and husband Clyde; nieces, Thedra, Gloria, Christine and Debbie; nephews, Wilbur, Urban, Bonefacio, Marvin, Leonard, Leon and Danny; special cousins and friends, Mike, Floyd, Jimmy, Paul, Clyde and many other family and friends. John served in the U.S. Army during the Koran War. He worked as a machinist by trade before traveling to see the world, then settled back in Espanola. He worked for the Espanola schools for over 15 years. After retiring he enjoyed fishing, welding, working on cars, wood carving, leather work and most important to him, he enjoyed helping people with reflexology. We wish to thank Odyssy hospice, especially Cindy Cross and to Casa Rael and staff, especially to Liz, Cathy, Matilda and Margaret for their extraordinary care. There are also too many of you to name individually, but you know who you are and more importantly, God know who you are. The family of John J. MARIA L. ORTEGA

Age 83, a resident of El Guique, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, January 17, 2009. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Gregorita Gallegos; husband, Arturo Ortega; son, Robert Ortega and brothers, Dennis and George Gallegos Jr. Maria enjoyed music, gardening, shopping and loved dancing with her husband. She was very active with the senior citizens program and enjoyed spending time with friends. Maria was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved her. Mrs. Ortega is survived by her children, Patricia Borrego and Vaudelio and wife, Sally Ortega; sisters, Sarah Archibeque and husband Robert and Magdalene Duran and husband George; grandchildren, Andres Borrego and wife Sharon, Lucas Borrego and wife Melissa, Isaac Ortega and wife Leah, Bradley Ortega, Jonna Ortega and Thomas Acevedo, Melissa Valdez and husband Albino and Amelia Jaramillo Ortega; daughter-in-law, Charlotte Jaramillo; brother-in-law, Antonio Vigil; sister-in-law, Alice Ortega; special people who took care of her, Mary Valdez, Denise Trujillo and the staff of Los Rios Home Health Care and numerous other relatives and friends. SIXTO E. MARTINEZ

Age 75, a resident of San Pedro, passed away on Sunday, January 18, 2009 following a lengthy illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Antonio and Teodorita Martinez; raised like a son by Teofila Garcia; sister, Frances Herrera and brother, Thomas Martinez. Sixto was a loving and devoted husband and father and grandfather. He loved to sing the songs; you picked a fine time to leave me Lucille, Amazing Grace and Green Beret. There were many things he kept busy with when he had time such as camping, fishing and hunting. He had 2 special Chihuahuas, Lolita and Bonita, whom he adored. He always made time to catch his football team, the Dallas Cowboys and basketball team UNM Lobos. When weather permitted he enjoyed gardening his tomatoes and chile but his pride was his rose garden. He will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him. Mr. Martinez is survived by his wife, Susie Martinez of San Pedro; daughter, Diane Trujillo and husband Harold Sr. of Chimayo; grandchildren, Hope and Harold Trujillo Jr. both of Chimayo; brother, Robert Martinez and wife Edith of Gallina; brothers-in-law, Joe Lopez and wife Barbara of San Pedro and Paul Martinez and wife Yvonne of San Pedro and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Maria Adelina Montoya

Age 100, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at the Sombrillo Nursing Home in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Adelina as people knew her celebrated her 100th birthday last August with friends and family. Adelina was born in Los Ancones, NM on August 8, 1908 to Antonio Isa Jaramillo and Maria Magdalena Gallegos. Adelina grew up in Los Ancones raised by her paternal grandmother, Vivianita Jaramillo and helped in raising her younger siblings, Melaquias, Felicita, and Samuel. Adelina married Eliseo Montoya of La Madera in 1936, together they had thee children, Joel, Magdalena and Gloria. Adelina enjoyed, cooking, sewing, and gardening. Adelina could have rivaled the dress designers of her time. Grandma “Nina” as her grandchildren and great-grandchildren call her, loved to sew and she could make any outfit or dress just by viewing the illustration rather than using a pattern. Adelina also enjoyed cooking her most famous “biscochitos” and “sopa”. Throughout her adulthood, Adelina was an active member in her church of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe in La Madera and her parish of San Juan Nepomuceno Church in El Rito. Adelina is preceded in death by her mother and father, Antonio Isa Jaramillo and Maria Magdalena Gallegos; her infant sister, Teresina Jaramillo; her husband, Eliseo Montoya; her infant children, Joel and Gloria Montoya; her brother, Melaquias Jaramillo and his wife Philomena Montoya of La Madera; brother, Samuel Jaramillo and wife Ascension Martinez of Ojo Caliente, and sister, Felicita Jaramillo of La Madera. Surviving Adelina is her daughter, Magdalena Jaramillo of Santa Fe and son-in-law Alfonso Jaramillo Jr. of Santa Fe; granddaughter who lived and cared for her, Maria Belinda Jaramillo and husband Jerry Vasquez; granddaughter, Edna Jaramillo and husband Tony Sandoval of Santa Fe; grandson, James Jaramillo and wife Carmen Garcia of Santa Fe; granddaughter, Deidra Jaramillo of Santa Fe, and June Jaramillo and husband Ron Churchill of Santa Fe and grandson, Alfonso Jaramillo III of Rio Rancho; special cousin, Manuel Herrera and wife Mary of Albuquerque. Adelina is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. She also had many special friends and family. LAURIE ANN SANCHEZ

Age 35, a resident of Española, passed away on Tuesday, March 17, 2009 following a short illness. She was preceded in death by her niece, Desiree Villalobos; cousin, Tanya Sanchez and uncle, Anthony Griego. Laurie was a very kind hearted and outgoing person who opened her door to friends, family and even strangers. She was giving and cared for those who were in need. Her children and grandchildren were the love of her life. Laurie enjoyed spending time with her family, fishing, the outdoors and cooking for her grandpa when she had time. She will be greatly missed by all her family and friends. Laurie is survived by her parents, Delbert and Lina Sanchez of Española; children, Ashley Sanchez and companion Isaiah Valdez, Ryan Sanchez and Clyde Vigil all of Española; grandchildren, D’Sean Valdez of Española; sisters, Sandra Gonzales and companion Kenny Vigil, Shannon Sanchez and companion Audelio Lopez all of Española and Shanae Sanchez of Leadville, CO; father of her children, Mark Montoya of Española; maternal grandparents, Amarante Gonzales and wife Simmie; paternal grandparents, Remigio Sanchez and wife Isabel; nephews, Brandon and Albert Villalobos and Kenneth Vigil and numerous other aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives and friends. Serving as pallbearers, Roy Charles and Kevin Gonzales, Benji Vigil, Isaiah Valdez, Dominic Tafoya and Nathan Tafoya. Honorary pallbearers named are, Ryan Sanchez, Clyde Vigil, D’Sean Valdez and Brandon Sanchez. The Sanchez family has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
