Harry Gunn, 74
Harry L. Gunn, 74, of Portales, died Saturday, June 5, 2004, at his home.
He was born on July 22, 1929, in Caddo, Texas, to Wayne and Orleena Gunn.
He graduated from Texas Tech University in 1951 with a degree in petroleum geology. He worked as an independent consulting petroleum geologist in the Carlsbad/Artesia area from 1951-55. He married his wife Sandra on June 24, 1988, in Roswell. They resided in Artesia until 1992, then moved to Portales. He was an environmental scientist with the state environment department’s USTB division, retiring in 1999. He was a member of Alpha Phi Omega and the Society of Independent Professional Earth Scientists. He was an Eagle Scout and remained involved in the Boy Scouts for many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Will Gunn of Odessa, Texas; a daughter; Lori Gunn of Midland, Texas; and a step-son, Gary Johnson of Carlsbad.
He is survived by his wife; an ex-wife, Peggy Gunn of Midland, Texas; three sons, Kellan Gunn of Midland, Russell Gunn (and wife, Deborah) of Spartanburg, S.C., and Anthony Gunn (Cindy) of Allen, Texas; two daughters, Rebecca Tidwell of Portales and Lynda Silver of Kaufmann, Texas; a sister, Martha Buckley of Fort Worth, Texas; a sister-in-law, Frances Gunn of Odessa, Texas; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Sunday at the Christian Campus House at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales. Radford Lane will officiate the services.

Helen Hale, 86
Helen Hale, 86, of Portales, died Thursday, June 10, 2004, at Lubbock Healthcare Nursing Home.
She was born on Feb. 25, 1918, in Red River County, Texas, to Mae Ola and Oco Norris.
She was adopted by her aunt and her husband, Maggie and J. Coy Williams. She graduated from Sam Houston High School in Houston in 1934. She attended the College of Industrial Arts and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1938. She married George M. Hale on July 1, 1938, in Clarksville, Texas. She then earned a master’s degree from East Texas State University in Commerce, Texas. She taught for 21 years in Clarksville before retiring in 1973. She served as a school board member from 1973 until 1984.
She moved to Portales in 1985, where she was a volunteer teacher’s aid. She was involved in education as a student, teacher, school board member and volunteer for 75 years. She also served as a Volunteer In Mission at McCurdy School in Espanola. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Portales, United Methodist Women, AARP and the Retired Teacher’s Association.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, George Williams; and by her husband.
Survivors include three sons, George A. “Jack” Hale (and wife, Mary) of Portales, Joe N. Hale (Carol) of Fruita, Colo. and Guy M. Hale of Tacoma, Wash.; a daughter, Cynthia Brandt (Phil) of Austin, Texas; a sister, Nell Ray of Vidor, Texas; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many friends.
Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church in Portales. The Rev. Harry Riser will officiate the services.
Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

Frances Hawkins, 79
Frances M. Hawkins, 79, of Bovina, died Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock.
She was born on Nov. 17, 1924, in Kado, Okla.
She married Lloyd Gober on Dec. 19, 1946, in New Mexico. She married Erith Hawkins in 1995, in New Mexico. She worked for Security State Bank in Farwell and First National Bank in Bovina. She was a homemaker and a member of the Bovina United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her first husband; a brother, James Roach; and a sister, Billie Barber.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Kim Gober of Ruidoso; a son, Lane Gober (and wife, Liz) of Victoria, Texas; three step-sons, Chet Hawkins of Tulia, Texas, Daryl Hawkins of Portales and Erith Hawkins III Payallup, Wash.; a granddaughter, Chelsea Gober of Victoria, Texas; a grandson, Jeff Gober of Victoria, Texas; five step-grandchildren; and a step-great-grandchild.
Services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. (CDT) Friday at Bovina United Methodist Church. The Rev. Gene Hawkins, the Rev. Jimmy McGuire and the Rev. Quita Jones will officiate the services.
Burial will be at Bovina Cemetery.
Arrangements are by Blackwell Funeral Home of Friona.

A. Mozell Martin, 89
Mrs. A. Mozell Martin, 89, of House, died Thursday, June 10, 2004, at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis.
She was born on Aug. 1, 1914, in Merkel, Texas, to John Melton and Martha Cordelia Evans Henry.
She was raised in House from the age of 7. She made her home in Roswell from 1954 to 1967 before moving to Warner, Okla., in 1967. She returned to House in 1989. She worked as a school nurse at Connors Junior College in Warner, Okla., for 20 years and assisted in other school activities including working at the ballgames and serving as dorm mom. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Warner, Okla.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Alvin, Jeff and Wilton Henry; and four sisters, Ethel, Norma Lee, Beulah and Lucille.
Survivors include two sons, Stanley B. Martin (and wife, Karen) of Phoenix and Sherman Martin (Becky) of House; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Visitation is scheduled from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m. Friday at Chavez Funeral Home in Fort Sumner.
Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Chavez Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Sumner. The Rev. Sherman Martin will officiate the services.
Burial will be at House Community Cemetery.
Pallbearers are her grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Baptist Children’s Home, P.O. Box 629, Portales 88130.
Arrangements are by Chavez Funeral Home of Fort Sumner.

Frances Hawkins, 79
Frances M. Hawkins, 79, of Bovina, died Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock.

Christopher Gikas, 78
Mr. Christopher Gikas, 78, of Farwell, a retired professor, died Sunday, June 6, 2004, at his home.
He was born on Jan. 26, 1926, in Lincoln, Neb., to Nestor O. and Freida Coronas Gikas.
He graduated from high school in Borger, Texas. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp. during World War II in the European Theatre in England. He attended Oklahoma State University where he received a bachelor’s degree. He received a master’s degree from the University of New Mexico and taught art at West Texas University for seven years and at Eastern New Mexico Unviersity for 23 years. He married Peggy Snider on Sept. 1, 1984. He served as mayor of Farwell for many years. He was the 1990 Man of the Year in Farwell. He was a member of Hamlin Memorial United Methodist Church and Rotary International Club.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Tom Gikas (and wife, Lisa) of Mountainair; a stepdaughter, Kim Newton (Grady) of Salado, Texas; two stepsons, John Snider of Farwell and David Snider (Carol) of Texico; two brothers, Col. Gus Gikas, retired (Leola) of San Antonio, Texas, John Gikas (Joyce) of Lubbock and Ted Gikas of Pampa, Texas; two sisters, Margaret Herrin (Dr. B.J.) of Marshall, Texas, and Marie Puckett (Robert) of Bartlesville, Okla.; two grandchildren, Stacey Haley of Portales and Taylor Gikas of Mountainair; three step grandchildren, Lauren Glenn of Salado, Texas, Nick Newton of San Marcos, Texas, and Bobby Snider of Texico; four great-grandchildren, Hunter, Madison and Will Haley, all of Portales and Madison Glenn of Salado, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews; and long-time friend, Ed DeBrull of El Paso, Texas.
Services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Farwell City Park. Cremation will take place.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Methodist Children’s Home, 1111 Herring Ave., Waco, Texas 76708 or your favorite charity.

Andrew Kersey, 80
Andrew Troy Kersey, 80, of Albuquerque, died Saturday, June 5, 2004.
He was born on April 29, 1924, in Manitou, Okla., to Andrew and Lela Cook Kersey.
He was raised in Oklahoma Lane, Texas. He was a World War II veteran. He retired from Sandia National Labs in 1986.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Kersey; five children, June Butler (and husband, Brian) of Albuquerque, Kaye Bachr (Don) of Edgewood, Joan Kostedt of Portales, Tom Kersey of Albuquerque and Gloria Drake (Steve) of Clovis; nine grandchildren, Bruce Martin and family, Glenn Kostedt and family, Janet Buenafe and family, Ken Kostedt and family, Tonya Nelson and family, James Lowe and family, Allan Kostedt and family, Troy Butler and Lin Drake; and 19 grandchildren.
Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. today at French Mortuary, University Boulevard Chapel in Albuquerque. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park in Albuquerque.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 5800 Lomas, NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110.

Adelaide Gregory, 89
Mrs. Adelaide Dorcas Self Gregory, 89, of Albuquerque, died Friday, June 4, 2004, in Albuquerque.
She was born Nov. 7, 1914 in Tupelo, Okla., to Ross and Sabra Self.
Mrs. Gregory graduated from Quitiquae High School in Quitiquae, Texas, and went on to receive a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Texas Tech University. She taught English in public schools for 45 years, the last 25 of which were at Portales Junior High School. She loved her students, and strove to always guide them toward happy and productive lives. She was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Portales. Possessed of tremendous energy, she gave unselfishly to family, friends and the Portales community.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Virgil Gregory; two sisters, Rugh Payte and Hazel Self of Lubbock; and three brothers, R.E. Self of Elida, Vaughter Self of Silverton, Texas, and Boyd Self of Alamosa, Colo.
She is survived by four children, John Gregory of Salmon, Idaho, David Gregory (and wife, Allison) of Santa Fe, Susan Gardenhire (and husband, Gene) of Albuquerque and Sinda McCaffery (Larry) of Borrego Springs, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Rhonda DeHaan, Laura Gregory, Stacey Walker, Tiffany Andre, Mark Ross Urton, Rebecca Furguson and Kyle Hahn; two daugthers-in-law, Rita Gregory and Valeria Allen; two sisters-in-law, Dollie Self of Elida and Audrey Gregory of Oklahoma City; four step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at Wheeler Mortuary in Portales. Pallbearers will be John Gergory, David Geregory, Mark Urton, Gene Gardenhire, Larry McCaffery, Guy Strunk, James Derrill Cody, Matt Ferguson and John Gentry.
Honorary pallbearers are Ocie DeHaan, Joel Ferguson, Dave DeHaan, John Walker, Tim Andre, Joe Ross Self and Joe Alan Self.

Ruth Johnson, 54
Ms. Ruth Johnson, 54, of Portales, died Saturday morning, June 5, 2004, at Roosevelt General Hospital in Portales.
She was born on April 4, 1950 in Portales to Verna May and John L. Feland.
Ms. Johnson lived in Portales until 1975 when she moved to Clovis. In 1976, she moved to Amarillo where she lived until 1985. She and her family moved to Rosemont, Calif., in 1985. About six years ago she returned to Portales to make her home. While living here she had worked at Dairy Concepts, E T’s and at the Wagon Wheel Restaurant. Ruth was a very hard worker and a devoted mother and grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Dyrel Wayne Feland, Charles Don Feland and another brother who died at birth.
She is survived by her fiance, Marlin Parks of Portales; two sons, Charles Pickard of Roswell, and David Johnson (and wife Amanda) of Tucumcari; three daughters, Tammy Dawson of Palmdale, Calif., Cindy Crawford of Artesia and Kim Johnson of Havert, Mont.; two brothers, Carol Feland of Amarillo, and Calvin Feland of Clovis; two sisters, Odena Turner and Ruby Burden, both of Portales; 14 grandchildren, one great-grandchild.
Services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Wednesday, at the home of her sister, Ruby Burden, 237 S. Roosevelt Rd. R in Portales. Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

Dixie Rondell, 83
Mrs. Dixie May “Diane” Rondell, 83, of Texico, died June 4, 2004, at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis.
She was born July 14, 1920, in Rifle, Colo., to Richard and Maudie (Pigg) Carlisle.
Her parents moved to Safford, Ariz., when she was 9 years old. She married Leland Rondell on July 23, 1943, in Riverside, Calif. She moved to Texico in 2001.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her sister, Helen Carlisle; and two infant children.
She is survived by cousins Dee and Jimmie Rhoads, Billie and Bill Clanton and Mona Bethnay, all of Midland, Texas, W. G. Swaim of Lovington, Dave Swaim of Salida, Colo., Donald Swaim of Portales, Mary and George Hill of Texico, Pearlia and Delbert Tivis of Clovis, Goldie and Troy Wall of Lubbock, Marvin Eminger of Cashion, Okla., James W. Carlisle of Commerce City, Colo., Clara Hughes of Plainview, Texas, Glenda Bell of Rose, Okla., Betty Chambers of Portales, John R. Carlisle of Cashion, Martha Robbins of Azaela, Ore., Mary Jean Hayhurst of Amarillo, L. D. Burrows Jr. and Edwin Burrows, both of Portales and Gale Hellums of Watkinsville, Ga.; She was “special grandmother” to Duwain and Rhonda Hill of Texico, Jo Beth and Steve Fletcher of Albuquerque, Drew and Jennifer Sours of Amarillo and Jaynee and Marcus Weems of Lovington; and “Grandma Dixie” to Jonathan and Jarron Hill, Brayden Fletcher, Devanne and Saylor Sours, Chasity, Dylan and Cotty Weems and special friends Mike and Judy Crever and Bill and Susan Dimpfel and Joan.
Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at Steed-Todd Chapel in Clovis. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, at Safford-Union Cemetery.
The Rev. Rob Hollis will officiate the services.
Honorary Pallbearers will include Duwain Hill, Steve Fletcher, Drew Sours, Butch Tharp, Marcus Weems, Clint Tharp, Craig Tharp and her Sunday school class.

Clara Talley, 84
Mrs. Clara Talley, 84, of Portales, died Friday morning, June 4, 2004, at the Heartland Continuing Care Center in Portales.
She was born Sept. 7, 1919, in Clovis to Maude and Orlando Lang.
She first came to Portales in 1929. Nearly all of her life was lived within the state. During World War II she worked as a truck driver at Cannon Air Force Base. She and her husband, Harry R. Talley, farmed north of Clovis for many years. In 1960 she moved to Portales. Clara worked as a care giver for shut-ins in the area for several years. In 1977 Clara moved to her mother’s home to care for her until her death in 1980. After her mother’s death she continued living there until a few years ago when her health forced her to move to a nursing home. Clara enjoyed knitting and crocheting as well as other types of crafts and hand work.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Barry Lang; and a sister, Eunice Widmier.
She is survived by one brother, Oren Lang of Clovis; two sisters, Blanch Kent of Portales and Essie Bell of Farmington.
Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday at Lawn Haven Cemetery in Clovis. Burial will be at Lawn Haven Cemetery in Clovis.
George Smith will officiate at the services.
Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

Parker Woodul, 92
Mr. Parker A. Woodul, 92, of Portales, died Friday morning, June 4, 2004, at his home in Portales.
He was born Oct. 21, 1911, in Wellington, Texas, to Ida and Henry J. Woodul.
Mr. Woodul graduated from high school. He went on to graduate from Texas A&M with a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Education in 1934. In 1941 he completed a master’s degree at Colorado State University. He belonged to the First Baptist Church. Parker served in the Army during World War II. Among the many medals he was awarded were the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. He was married to Bobbye Daniels on Dec. 19, 1936, in Carlsbad. During their marriage they traveled to every continent. Mr. Woodul was known for his friendly smile and his hard work for the good of the community.
Mr. Woodul was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Lex and Finley Woodul; a sister, Lois Woodul; one son, William Jenkins Woodul; two daughters, Sharon Woodul and Mary Ann Woodul; and his beloved wife.
He is survived by two sons, Jack Daniels Woodul (and wife Carolyn) of Raton; and James Edward Woodul (Lida) of Houston, Texas; four grandchildren, Douglas Parker Woodul (Amy) of Round Rock, Texas, Jon Christopher Woodul (Kim) of Keller, Texas, Robert Conrad Woodul of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Aaron Zachariah Woodul of Houston; and three great-grandchildren, Austin Parker Woodul, Kaylie Woodul and C. J. Woodul.
Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel in Portales Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.
Dr. Herbert Bergstrom will officiate the services, assisted by Betty Williamson.
Pallbearers are Douglas Woodul, Chris Woodul, Grady Jenkins, John Atchley, Eldin Cooper and Dewey Langston.
The members of the Portales Rotary Club will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary in Portales.

Mary Edna Luker
Services: 10 a.m. Saturday at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel in Portales.
Mrs. Mary Edna Luker, 94, of Portales, died Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at Heartland Continuing Care Center in Portales.
She was born on June 7, 1909, in Winters, Texas, to Willie and T.B. Inman.
As a girl the family moved to Tulia, Texas. After having lived there several years they relocated to Brownfield in 1923. She married Walter Luker on Jan. 17, 1926, in Brownfield, Texas. In 1944 they moved to Dora where they operated a farm and dairy. She was involved in the Dora Baptist Church and the Dora Senior Citizens. After moving to Portales in 1991 to make their home at Golden Acres, she became a member of the Calvary Baptist Church. Family members said she enjoyed her family, and taking family camping trips, gardening, canning, sewing and various kinds of handwork. Since July of 1999 she had made her home at Heartland Continuing Care Center in Portales.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Oleta Shepherd, Naomi Patterson and Helen Hallford; a daughter, Betty Jo Dickerman; and by her husband.
Survivors include a daughter, Donna Jean Victor (and husband, Bennie) of Portales; five grandchildren, Chris Duncan (Kathy), Nelda Leadingham, Linda Carver (Rendell), Denise Wall (Dickie) and Jolene Fails (Rick); 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Woodson Inman of Carlsbad.
The Rev. Steve Smith and the Rev. Roy Roach will officiate the services.
Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Rick, T.J. and Jonathan Fails, Scott and Chris Duncan, Rendell Carver, Dickie Wall and Brad Hill.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Calvary Baptist Church, P. O. Box 8, Portales, N.M. 88130.
Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.
