Col. Kelton S. Davis ("Tex" or “the Colonel" to everyone that knew him) was born in Maywood, Illinois on March 3, 1914. The oldest of three sons, he helped support the family by running a freshegg delivery service during high school. He was so successful in this little business venture, which took him to an uncle's farm in Ohio, that it soon expanded and he brought back butter and other dairy products to Depressionera Chicago neighborhoods. With the proceeds, he proudly tells that he was able to buy his first car a Buick convertible! In 1933, he won a coveted scholarship to West Point as one of the two boys selected from the state of Illinois to attend our nation's top institution for training future army officers. While at West Point, he helped edit the poetry magazine, The Winged Horse Anthology, for which he also did the illustrations. Thoughout his long life, he retained this wonderful facility for drawing and working with his hands that helped, especially, in the ongoing decoration of the family home in Taos. With his roommate, he also learned to walk on his hands, racing down their dormitory corridor upside down! Tex's class of 1937 was the last class to graduate officers entering the cavalry. Although later he happily rode around in a tanks at the major armor posts like Ft. Hood, Texas, anyone who came in contact with him knew his heart belonged to horses! As a young second lieutenant and aidedecamp to "Skinny" Wainright, he patrolled the USMexican border at El Paso. And in his spare time he organized a "monkey" drill team composed of soldiers who performed acrobatics on horseback. During World War II, he fought as part of the allied forces in Europe. He also served in the partitioned Vienna made famous in Orson Welles' movie, The Third Man. In wartorn Austria he met his future wife, Inge. Inge and Tex, and soon Babs, Brian, Tim traveled the world for the next thirty years. Most memorable were all the foreign postings: to Leghorn, Rome, Yokahama. Tex also served his country during the Korean Conflict while the family lived in Monterey, California. He was decorated by the Korean government for his diplomacy. On a family vacation out West after completing his tour of duty in Japan, Tex and Inge chanced upon Taos and fell in love with it. They bought an old, ramshackled adobe house from the Taos writer Joseph Foster behind the Sage Brush Inn. In 1968, they moved in after Tex's completion of his last tour of duty in St. Louis, Missouri and retirement from the military. And so began Tex's second career as a feared and beloved teacher of algebra at Taos High School. As Seth Brown puts it: "Colonel Davis was one of my favorite teacherseven though he flunked me in business math, and that led to my becoming a silversmith. He could be tough and stern, but he was also real gentle. He was the teacher we kids befriended the most. He was one of the teachers that the kids just felt most comfortable with. He really cared for all of us, and especially for me because I was struggling so hard with the business math." Tex was always very social and involved with the civic life of Taos. With the Lion's Club, he helped bring the Conistoga Wagon that the was touring the country to Taos during the Bicentennial Celebration. But in between helping to plaster the adobe house on Parajito Lane, and painting the ornamental borders of its fireplaces and its many wooden panels and doors, he was also perfecting his famous cooking skills. He just loved creating multicourse dinners for friends like Larry, Michael, and Rueben Martínez, Patsy, R.C. Gorman, and many others that sat around the kitchen table. Indoors, he was happiest concocting spoon bread, turkey with oyster stuffing, and his piecederesistance: lemon meringue pie! He was always poring over Italian cookbooks. We kids said he was lucky to have a builtin cleanup crew to perform KP since the kitchen invariably looked like a disaster scene after one of these bouts of innovative cuisine! For the last five years of his life, Tex lived at Spanish Peaks Veteran's Home on the New MexicoColorado border. Gallant to the end, he was never without his broadbrimmed cowboy hat as he flirted with the nurses and chatted with the other patients as he rolled by in his wheel chair. Before he became so ill, he also sang with a small group. All his life, he possessed a lovely baritone voice and had sung in the male chorus at West Point. On long car trips when we were growing up, the radio would be on, "Irene Goodnight" would be playing, performed by The Weavers, and dad would accompany them. Then he would launch into "The Caissons Go Rolling Along." Mom, and the kids in the back seat, would chime in. Wherever Tex is now, we are sure he will be among his beloved quarter horses, out on the range behind the house and the sage near Chamissa Road. And he will have his boots and hat on. He is survived by his wife Inge and by his sons Brian of Pacific Grove, California, Tim of Dillon, Colorado, and Babs (Barbara Maria Stafford) of Chicago, Illinois, as well as five grandchildren: Anna, Dieter, Nicholas, Eric and Kyle.
