Frank Vanek

Memorial services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Sierra Community Church, 1165 Sierra Blvd., for Frank T. Vanek Jr. (Red), who died April 12, 2006, in Van Nuys, Calif. He was 67.

Frank was born Aug. 18, 1938, in Los Angeles. Having always been mesmerized by the beauty of Lake Tahoe, Frank and his family moved to Lake Tahoe in 1974 where he resided for 32 years. During that time, he owned and operated High Mountain Photo and Framing.

He had a passion for photography and won awards for his photos. He used his talent to assist photography classes at Lake Tahoe Community College.

Frank also owned and operated Vanek's Engine Specialist. He had a love for fast engines, fast cars and fast snowmobiles. He owned a funny car and raced the Circle Track in Carson City, Nev., and Roseville, Calif. He was highlighted in Hot Rod Magazine for a dune buggy he built called, "The Big Wheel." He was also active with the local N.A. and A.A. and enjoyed square dancing. He will be dearly missed by all his family and friends.

Frank is survived by his daughters, Barbara Conway and Diann Vanek of Folsom, Calif; son, Ed Vanek of Helena, Mont.; mother, Dorothy Vanek of Van Nuys, Calif.; brother, George Vanek of Van Nuys, Calif.; six grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a second great-grandchild due any day now.

He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Vanek Sr.

A reception will follow the memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Frank's memory to CHADD (Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder), 8181 Professional Place, Suite 150, Landover, MD, 20785.

Audrey I. Cooper

A celebration of life will take place Saturday for Audrey I. Cooper, who passed away May 16, 2006, at Washoe Medical Center in Reno, Nev.

Audrey was born Sept. 20, 1930, in Norfolk, Neb., to Bob and Wilma (Bell) Truex. Her family moved to Reno in 1937, then to Omaha, Neb., in 1940, returning to Reno in 1946. Audrey graduated from Reno High School in 1949 and in the same year married Earl Cooper, who had been the boy next door in 1937.

They made their home in Reno/Sparks and Zephyr Cove, Nev. As her children were growing up, Audrey was very active in their lives. She volunteered many hours as room mother, Brownie and Girl Scout leader, and as a chauffeur for many sporting events. Audrey volunteered at Zephyr Cove Elementary, Kingsbury Middle and Whittell High schools so much they finally hired her. She worked for them as a teacher's aide and librarian and retired from Whittell as the head cook in 1991. After being blessed with grandchildren, Audrey dedicated her time and energy to them. They will greatly miss her. Audrey was active in the Lake Tahoe Republican Women's Club and the Barton Hospital Auxiliary, and served alongside her husband as a Kiwanenne and a Rotary Anne when he was active in Kiwanis and Rotary.

Audrey is survived by her husband of 57 years, Earl Cooper; her daughter, Linda; daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Scott Sullivan of Martinez, Calif.; grandchildren Ashley Cooper, Hannah, Connor, Aaron and Tess Sullivan; great-grandchildren Maile Cooper and Bella Cooper-Hyer; and many beloved cousins throughout the United States and Norway.

Preceding Audrey in death were her parents; son, Mark in 1960; and daughter, Susan in 1973.

Audrey requested there be no funeral service. A celebration of life will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Cooper family home. For more information call (775) 826-9161.

Darrell David Daugherty

Services are pending for Darrell David Daugherty, 90, who died May 26, 2006. Mr. Daugherty was born Aug. 5, 1915, in Reno, Nev., the oldest of seven children born to Raymond and Pauline Daugherty. After living in California for much of his life, he and his beloved wife, Terry, returned to the area in 1963, residing for nine years in South Lake Tahoe and the last 34 years in Douglas County.

While living in San Jose, Calif., and raising their children, Mr. and Mrs. Daugherty operated a diner for many years. Before and while operating the diner, Mr. Daugherty also was a truck driver during the summer months, driving to the San Joaquin Valley to load fruit at the ranches and deliver it to canneries. He said this was the greatest job of his entire life. Upon moving to South Lake Tahoe in 1963, Mr. Daugherty operated a tavern for five years called The Terry Doll, which he named after his wife. He worked at Harrah's Lake Tahoe following the sale of The Terry Doll.

Following retirement, he was a chef at the Meadowcliff Lodge in Coleville, Calif., for several years.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Philip Bushnell of Gardnerville, Nev.; granddaughters Lori Norton and Kristy Sumwalt; great-granddaughters Marissa Norton, Shanna Norton, and Nina Fambrini, all of San Jose; siblings Ernest Daugherty of South Lake Tahoe, Ralph Daugherty of Minden, Nev., and Lorraine Johnson of Las Vegas; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Terry Daugherty, in 2000; daughter, Kathleen Mae Carter, in 2003; and son, James Patrick Daugherty, a Vietnam veteran, in 1969.

Mr. Daugherty will be interred at Happy Homestead cemetery in South Lake Tahoe with his beloved wife and their brave son.

Nichole Rae Ayala

Nichole Rae Ayala of South Lake Tahoe died July 4, 2006, in Reno, Nev.

Nichole was born May 5, 1983, in South Lake Tahoe.

She was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her husband, Frankie Ayala; children, Kamrhen and Layla; brothers, Nathan and Anthony; and sisters, Cora and Hayly.

Services were held at noon July 12 at McFarlane Mortuary.

Patrick Gerard Schafer, M.D.

Loving husband, father, and friend, Patrick G. Schafer, M.D., died tragically at the age of 46 on March 8, 2006. Pat had an immense spirit and terrific sense of humor. He touched everyone he met with his incredible generosity and genuine caring. His desire to help others and be a positive example of faith was reflected in the sincere way he approached everyone and everything in life. All those who knew him understood that Pat would do anything for someone in need.

Above all else, Pat loved his family and relished time spent with his wife and children. He was a proud father and his happiest times were spent with his family sharing adventures in southern Utah, Hawaii, New York, and Lake Tahoe, among others. Pat led an active lifestyle, participating in cycling, golf, and skiing.

Pat was born Nov. 4, 1959, in Reno, Nev., to George and Dolores Schafer. He graduated from South Tahoe High School in 1977, and the University of California, Davis. He attended medical school at the University of Nevada, Reno graduating in 1987. He completed his anesthesiology residency at the University of Utah and a Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship at National Children's Hospital in Washington, DC.

He worked at the University of Utah Medical Center for seven years before transferring to the Shriner's Hospital for Children in 1998 to follow his passion of providing care for children. He became co-director of the Department of Anesthesia where he worked tirelessly to provide the highest level of care to his young patients.

Pat is survived by the love of his life, wife, Peggy Mair, M.D.; his precious children, Willis, Sydney, and Chloe; his mother, Dolores Schafer of Reno; and siblings, Bernadette (David) Santana, Brian (Therese) Schafer, John Schafer, and D'Anne (Theodore Paul) Kruper and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, friends, and medical colleagues. He was preceded in death by his father, George Francis Schafer, and father-in-law, David Lewis Ion.

Words will never express the pain and sorrow we feel at the loss of our Patrick, however we are all better people because of the time that we spent with him. Thank you Pat, for giving us your infinite love and support. Patrick and his family would want you to think of him the next time you are carving turns or finishing a great round on a beautiful day.

Funeral services took place March 11 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, 1975 South, 2300 East, Salt Lake City. Immediately following the service, a reception celebrating Pat's life was held at the Shriners Hospital for Children, Fairfax Road at Virginia St., Salt Lake City.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting you celebrate Pat's life with gifts to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, c/o Shriner's Hospital for Children, Intermountain Unit, Fairfax Road at Virginia St., Salt Lake City, UT 84103.

William Harrington Niebur

William Harrington Niebur, 81, died March 4, 2006, in Gardnerville, Nev.

William was born Oct. 23, 1924, in Wheeling, W. Va., to William J. and Mary Niebur. He attended the University of California, Berkeley, and served in the European Theater with the U.S. Army Military Police during World War II. He married Donna C. Kingston on Feb. 2, 1952.

He was retired as a parole agent with the Alameda County Probation Department and as a peace officer with the state of California Department of Corrections.

He and his wife built a vacation home in Stateline, Nev., in 1970, and resided there full time from 1992 until they moved to Gardnerville in 2003.

He is survived by his wife, Donna C. Niebur of Gardnerville; children, Karen T. Groom of Oakley, Calif., Christopher S. Niebur of West Point, Calif., Jocelyn D. Thompson of Hollywood, Calif., and Shannon P. Gerard of Oakley; brother, Robert Niebur of Phoenix, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; and nieces and nephews in Arizona.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are by FitzHenry's Carson Valley Funeral Home.

Lois Jean Coleman

Memorial services will be conducted March 17 for Lois Jean Coleman, who died March 9, 2006, at her home in Gardnerville, Nev., surrounded by her loving family. She was 70.

Lois was born Oct. 26, 1935, in San Francisco to Thomas Spitaleri and Inez Bianchini. She resided at South Lake Tahoe from 1973 to 1990, when she moved to Gardnerville. She was a member of St. Gall's Catholic Church, active with the Carson Valley Kids Fishing Derby and volunteered with the Carson City Senior Games. Lois was a loving mother and wife, an adoring grandmother, and an uplifting friend to all with whom she came in contact.

She is survived by her husband, Bill Coleman of Gardnerville; children, Lori Cooper of Gardnerville; son, Bill Coleman of Reno, Nev.; grandson, Dusty Cooper of Gardnerville; Den Haag of Holland; sisters, Kiki Broderick and Pat Bouharin, both of Gardnerville; and countless nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Carol Lipke.

Memorial services will begin at 3 p.m. March 17 at The Bentley Science Park, 1751 Orbit Way, Minden, Nev.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in honor of Lois Coleman to the American Cancer Society, Hospice or any children's charity.

Charlene Weaver

Charlene Weaver passed away March 15, 2006, at her home in Carson City, Nev. She was an active member of American Legion Post 56 of Santa Maria, Calif. Charlene loved spending time with family and animals.

She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Deny Weaver; daughter, Deneen Weaver; grandson, Charles Weaver; sisters, Virginia Kay Michaels of Willoughby, Ohio, and Marta Higens of San Diego, Calif.; and numerous friends and relatives.

The family is planning a memorial gathering for late spring or early summer.

Walton's Douglas County Mortuary is handling all cremation arrangements for the family.

Mary Jeannine Thomas

Mary Jeannine (Stout) Thomas passed away Dec. 31, 2005. She was born Aug. 20, 1936, in Mansfield, Mo., to Russell and Pansy Stout, a few minutes after her twin sister, Janice.

The family moved to Orange County, Calif., in 1940, to Keene, Calif., in 1944, then to the Clear Creek B Ranch at Hart Flat, Calif. Jeannine was born into a Godly home and at 14 came to know Christ as her Savior. She attended Keene Elementary School and graduated with honors from Tehachapi High School in 1954. She earned her AA degree at Bakersfield Junior College before transferring to University of California, Berkeley.

Married in 1960, she and her husband lived in Berkeley where she earned a bachelor's degree in home economics from San Francisco State in 1961, before moving to Santa Barbara, Calif., where their daughters, Carole and Annette, were born. After her divorce, Jeannine and her daughters lived briefly with her twin sister and children in Richmond, Calif., before moving to Bakersfield where she was employed as a substitute teacher. In 1972 she accepted a position with the South Lake Tahoe Social Services Department and worked there for 20 years in both child and adult protective services.

She was well liked by co-workers, and her clients responded to the gentleness, patience and respect with which she treated them with kind words and tokens of appreciation. Jeannine had a great love of family. She also enjoyed reading, cooking, gardening, camping, and South Lake Tahoe's ever-changing seasons. She taught her daughters the value of hard work, education and self-reliance. She also stressed the importance of knowing God, and felt that having a close relationship with the Lord was necessary for true success in life.

In the early 1990s, with failing health, Jeannine retired on medical disability and moved to Napa, Calif., to help her twin sister deal with her health limitations. When Janice died in 1999, Jeannine moved to Bakersfield where she and her mother mourned their loss.

A year later she moved to Pollock Pines, Calif., to be near her sister, Faye Lucas of Camino, Calif. She died after a long struggle with crippling diabetes and congestive heart failure and was laid to rest in Napa.

She will be greatly missed by loved ones and remembered for her devotion to family, her wonderful sense of humor, and her great kindness and unselfish generosity to others.

Jeannine is survived by her mother, Pansy Stout of Bakersfield; sisters, Faye Lucas of Camino and Evelyn Childress of Bakersfield; daughters, Carole Zundel of Kuna, Idaho, and Annette Cottman of Fairfield, Calif.; grandchildren Kyle Zundel, Andrew and Holly Cottman; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Russell Stout; and her twin sister, Janice (Stout) Moore.

John Franklin Larison

A meeting of memories will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday at Riva Grill for John Franklin Larison, 76, who died Nov. 3, 2006, at Stateline, Nev.

John was born July 26, 1930, in Hot Lake, Ore., to John Spencer Larison and Emmy Louise Knotts. He honorably served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1954 and attended Eastern Oregon College. After the Navy he worked for RCA, and the Army Signal Corp. as a civilian. He went on to co-found a communications business dealing primarily in paging. He was a scientist, scholar and entrepreneur. He was known for his love of snowboarding and skiing and for his philanthropic activities that helped several area students attend college. He was an avid parachutist and loved motorcycling, diving and general outdoor activities. He traveled across the country and throughout the world to pursue his passions.

He is survived by children, Michael and Marsha Bluto; grandchildren, Larison, Cole and Marijke Bluto; brother and sister-in-law, Craig and Beverly Larison of La Grande, Ore.; and nieces, Kari Ewert and Kelli Lovell.
