ONEONTA — Memorial services for Mrs. Beatrice (Bea) Pizza, age 77, who died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, will be held at noon on Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Ruth P. Sprague

PAWLING — Ruth Pulver Sprague, 96, resident of Pawling, passed away Jan. 31, 2003.

She is survived by her son, Everett Pulver of Oneonta.

Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday at the Horn & Thomes, Inc., Funeral Home, Pawling.

Burial will be in the spring in Pawling Cemetery.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Lovely Hill Nursing Home, Reservoir Road, Pawling, N.Y. 12564.

Alfred R. Prentice

ORLANDO, Fla. — Alfred Richard Prentice, 35, of Orlando, Fla., formerly of East Worcester, N.Y., died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, after a courageous battle with Lymphoma, at his home.

He was born on May 27, 1967, in Cobleskill, N.Y., the son of Charles and Betty (Hagadorn) Prentice Sr.

He was a 1985 graduate of Worcester Central School and then he attended SUNY Cobleskill and SUNY Brockport, majoring in business.

Shortly after in 1993, he moved with a group of friends to Orlando. While in Florida, he worked at Angel's and Denny's as a server.

His hobbies included his love and care of his many beautiful flower gardens, his collection of bird houses and his art of detailing old furniture.

He is survived by his parents, Charles and Betty Prentice Sr., of East Worcester; one brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Trace Prentice Jr., of Riverside, Calif., and their daughters, Bronwyn and Payton; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Vicky and David May of Charlotte, N.C., Laurie and Terry Smith of Binghamton, N.Y., and Tammy and Kenneth Keever of East Worcester, and their sons, Nicholas, Alexander and Zackary; as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins. He also leaves behind many, many close, wonderful friends in the local area, as well as in Orlando; including his lifelong childhood best friend, Cheryl Marsh, and her son, Joey.

After cremation, there will be a memorial service held in Florida. A memorial service will be held locally at a later date at the convenience of the family.

Burial will be held in the spring at the East Worcester Cemetery.

Joseph W. Balado

ELDERSBURG, Md. — Mr. Joseph William Balado Sr., 69, who passed away Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, was born on March 6, 1933.

Margaret A. Black

SEBASTIAN, Fla. — Margaret A. Black, 92, of Sebastian, Fla., and formerly of New Lisbon, N.Y., died Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, in Vero Beach, Fla.

She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Oct. 24, 1910, the daughter of Oscar and Maria (Carlson) Anderson.

She married Robert G. Black Sr. on June 29, 1929, on Staten Island, N.Y. He died March 15, 1984.

She had shared her many skills and talents with many people as a 4-H Leader and in the Otsego County Home Bureau. She had been employed by the Morris Central School in the school cafeteria from 1970 until 1975.

She and her husband moved to Florida in 1975, and prior to that had lived in New Lisbon for over 31 years.

She was a past member of the Jewel Chapter of the Eastern Star and the Laurens Chapter of the Eastern Star and was a past matron. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Sebastian and had attended the United Methodist Church of Morris, N.Y.

She is survived by her children, Eleanor Gregory and her husband, Philip of Sebastian, Fla., and New Lisbon, N.Y., Robert G. Black Jr. and his wife, Jolene of Jonestown, Pa.; her grandchildren, Mark Gregory and wife, Debra of Herndon, Va., Terrill Gregory of Herkimer, N.Y., Andrea Gregory of North Pomfrit, Vt., Robert O. Black III and wife, Mary of Clinton, Iowa, Kathleen Dodd of Laurens, N.Y., Barbara Black of Tampa, Fla., Diane Black of Tucson, Ariz.; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

She was predeceased by a brother, Rudy Anderson.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, and funeral services will be on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at 3 p.m. at the funeral home, with the. Rev. Ann Blair officiating.

Burial will be in Mount Vision Cemetery, Mount Vision, N.Y., at a later date.

A memorial service will be held in the First Presbyterian Church of Sebastian at a later date.

Friends are asked to make donations to the VNA Hospice House of Indian River County, 1111 36th St., Vero Beach, FL, 32960 or the Catskill Area Hospice of Oneonta, N.Y., 13820 in her memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Kenneth Blackwell

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Kenneth Blackwell, age 79, of Park Street entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, in Valley Health Services Inc., Herkimer.

He was born on April 23, 1923, in Taunton, Mass., son of the late Earle B. and Theresa C. Maloney Blackwell.

Ken was raised in Taunton and was a graduate of Taunton High School.

On May 20, 1943, he married Dorothy Miller on Long Island, a loving and devoted union of 36 years until her passing in 1979.

An honorably discharged veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Coast Guard.

For many years, Mr. Blackwell was the beverage manager for the Otesaga Hotel in Cooperstown, retiring in the early 1990s.

He moved to Richfield Springs in 1996, coming from Cooperstown. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Ken had a great sense of humor and was a familiar face around Richfield Springs, to all the businesses where he would stop in to say hello and share a joke.

He was happiest when he was surrounded by his friends and family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a friend to many and will never be forgotten.

Surviving him are 11 grandchildren, Dorothy Peters of Mohawk, Paul Holland of Richfield Springs, Matthew Iannotta, Jennifer Rood, both of Little Falls, Diane Corter of New Jersey, Kelly Winslow of Richfield Springs, Kathy Thomson of Connecticut, Kristine Thomson of East Springfield, Karen Thomson of Utica, Kenneth Thomson of Connecticut, Michael Lowenstein of New Jersey; over 30 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Robert Blackwell of Tennessee, Donald Blackwell and Earle Blackwell, both of Massachusetts; two sisters, Barbara DeSylvia of Rhode Island, and Diane Dickenson of Arizona; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents, and wife, Dorothy, he was preceded in death by his two daughters, Sharon Ann Kilts in 1996, and Deborah Jean Thomson in 2000; and a grandson, Ricky Iannotta in 1990.

A celebration of Ken's life will be held on Saturday at 4 p.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs. The family will be present to receive relatives and friends in the funeral home two hours prior to the service, from 2 to 4 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made the Richfield Springs Veterans Club. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Herbert M. Reed

COOPERSTOWN — Herbert M. Reed passed away on Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, after a prolonged illness.

He was born on Nov. 6, 1920, in Columbus, Ohio, the son of Herbert Milton and Florence (Craggs) Reed, and grew up in Rochester.

He served in the United States Army Air Corps as a fighter pilot from 1943-1945. Throughout the years he was employed in the dental supply field retiring in 2001.

Mr. Reed is survived by his wife, Patricia (Bronk) Reed; and his five children, David M. Reed of Moretown, Vt., Douglas A. and Michele Reed of Moretown, Vt., Elizabeth R. and William Freeland of East Springfield, Susan P. Reed of Shelburne Falls, Mass., and Martha E. Reed of Albuquerque, N.M. He is also survived by his two stepdaughters, LuAnn Rand of Gloversville and Kelly Wicenciuk, at home; and seven grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, William Reed of Canon City, Colo., and Phillip Reed of East Greenbush; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Walker of Monroe, Mich., in 1997.

Viewing hours for friends and family members will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at the Ottman Funeral Home in Cherry Valley.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Kidney Foundation or the American Heart Association.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Charles T. Reimer

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Charles T. Reimer passed away at home in San Diego, Calif., on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, after an extended hospitalization.

"Chuck" was born in Palmerton, Pa., in 1928. He served a stint in the U.S. Army, 1946-1948, after which he attended Kutztown Teacher's College in Pennsylvania.

Graduating in 1951 he taught in the Bethel, Pa., school district for several years, continuing his education at The Pennsylvania State University. He graduated with an Ed.D shortly before coming to Oneonta, N.Y., in 1965.

In the summer of 1965, Chuck became a member of the Education Division of the State University College of Education, teaching Statistics, Research Design and other courses to graduate students in the Department of Counselor Education. He served as Chairman of that department for three years.

He was also a member of various department and college committees and a variety of professional, academic organizations. He retired in 1985.

While in Oneonta, Chuck was very active in the local Kiwanis organization. He served as president for a year from 1972-1973. Chuck was well-known in the community, extremely well thought of by students, faculty and townspeople and had many friends who had stayed in touch with him since his retirement.

Chuck lost the members of his immediate family when he was quite young, but was fortunate to be "adopted" by the Planz family of Kutztown.

He is survived by the members of that extended family in California and Florida, and by his many good friends in Oneonta.

Claude E. Marble

ONEONTA — Claude E. Marble, 34, of Oneonta, died unexpectedly Feb. 5, 2003, at his residence.

He was born Aug. 9, 1968, in Oneonta, the son of Fred and Bonnie (Lindberg) Marble.

Claude was employed at both Fotis Bakery and Taylors Oil on Main Street in Oneonta. He has been a lifelong area resident.

He is survived by his parents of Oneonta; his grandmother, Elvira Burgher of Oneonta; and his aunts and uncles, Donna and Claude Payne of Remsen, Rose and Mitchell Hitts of Maryland, Shirley and Bill Perkins of Washington, Susan and Vern Walley of Oneonta, Roger and Denise Oliver of Oneonta, Barbara Lindberg of Oneonta, Richard and Judy Lindberg of Oneonta, David and Darlene Lindberg of Laurens, Doug and Paula Lindberg of Otego, Iver and Lillian Lindberg of Cooperstown, Betty and Louie Barnes of Mount Vision, Susan and Ivan Norton of Otego, Frank and Ruth Lindberg of Connecticut, Donald and Dodie Lindberg of Worcester, Norma and Ernie Jones of Edmeston, Deborah and Walter Stretch of Westford, and Ester and John Roote of Greene; and several cousins.

He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, David and Dorothy Lindberg Sr.; his paternal grandfather, Bill Oliver; his paternal great-grandmother, Minnie Roberts; and his uncle, John Lindberg.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, when the family will be in attendance.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, with the Rev. Mel Farmer, pastor of the River Street Baptist Church, officiating at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Burial will be later in the Lena Cemetery, Lena.

Funeral arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Marion S. Smith

HADLEY — Marion Slocum Smith (nee Cole) of Hadley found peace Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, at the age of 87 years.

She was the beloved wife of the late Andrew Smith and the late Lowell Slocum.

She was the dear stepmother of Thomas (Susan) Smith and Judith (Ralph) Voeltner; grandmother of Mary-Jane (Mark) Maurice, F. Mark (Rachel) Smith and Andrew Voeltner; dear sister of the late Katherine (the late Lynn) Thompson; fond aunt of James Thompson, Lyle Thompson and the late Fred Thompson; great-aunt of Jack, Jeffery, James, Jared, Jennifer and Kimberly Thompson; and great-grandmother of Mark Maurice Jr. She is also survived by other relatives, dear friends and devoted caregivers.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on April 25, 2003, at Grace Episcopal Church in Cherry Valley.

Memorials in Marion's name may be made to the Mountain Valley Hospice of Gloversville, or the charity of your choice.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Arthur Brundage Sr.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Arthur Brundage Sr., died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, with his family by his side.

He was born in Otisville, N.Y., on Dec. 9, 1907, the son of Marshall and Grace (Vilee) Brundage.

He married Dorothy Hubler on April 28, 1928.

He spent his entire career in the transportation industry. He was the owner of Oneonta Bus Lines, until his retirement in 1970.

He was a member of Rotary International, Elks, Moose, Hiram Club and the American Contract Bridge League of which he was a Life Master.

He enjoyed traveling, golf and being with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 74 years; two sons and their mates, Arthur Jr. and Nancy of Oneonta and Dennis and LouAnn of Scottsdale, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.

He was predeceased by his brother, John, and sister, Helen.

Private services were held at Messinger's Funeral Home of Scottsdale, Ariz.

Graveside services will be at the burial in the spring at Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Ruth D. Yale

UNADILLA — Ruth D. (Ma-Ma) Yale, 85, of Unadilla, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at her home.

She was born Oct. 16, 1917, in New Castle, Pa., the daughter of the late Harold and Josephine (Meredith) Davie.

She was married to Ivan S. Yale on Feb. 17, 1947, in Montrose, Pa. Mr. Yale predeceased her on Jan. 30, 1998.

She has been a resident of the Tri-Town area most of her life and had been a four-year employee of Amphenol Corp. of Sidney, retiring in 1983.

From neighbor to stranger, Ruth loved everyone and everyone who knew Ruth loved her.

Ruth was employed at Amphenol Corp. for many years, but the work she was most proud of was her preaching work. Yes, faithfully just like Jesus, she went house to house telling the good news of God's Kingdom.

The morning of her death at age 85, she was home happily getting ready to go out in the preaching work. (See Acts 20:20-Matthew 24:14.)

She was a member of the Sidney Jehovah's Witnesses.

Ruth is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jackie and Pete Rivino of Unadilla; her stepdaughter and husband, Ivana and Richard Gerhard of the state of Florida; her son-in-law, Alex Vicaire of Restigouche, Canada; her grandchildren, Angela Slaughter, Peter Vicaire, Kela Jacques, Kenda Teague, Buddy Vicaire, JaKena Henry, Loni Vicaire, Kirby Vicaire, Kammy Vicaire, Cheryl Benson, Darcy Cole, Debbie Soroka, Diane Smith and Brian Schmitz; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Tony Esposito, a daughter, Meredith Vicaire; and a grandson, Denny Vicaire.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, at the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, with Brother Fred Debari of the Sidney Jehovah's Witnesses officiating.

Burial will be later in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Friends may call at the funeral home, Monday, Feb. 10, from 5 to 7 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Unadilla Emergency Squad.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla.

Luella VanVranken

OTEGO — Luella Van Vranken, 84, of Otego, died at home on Friday, Feb. 7, 2003. She was born in the town of Butternuts on Dec. 13, 1918, to Adelbert and Grace Utter Filer.

She graduated from Gilbertsville High School and later married Abram "Bill" Van Vranken on Dec. 16, 1939. Together they owned and operated Mel-O-Med Farm from 1943 to 1988.

Luella was active in the community as a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Gilbertsville, former member of Covered Bridge Squares square dance club, Butternut Valley Grange of Gilbertsville, Butternut Valley Garden Club, Otego Hookers rug club, and the New York Holstein Friesian Association.

Luella is survived by daughters Mary Lou and husband, Kenneth Hammond, of Otego and Janet Nelson of Otego; brother, Carl and wife, Esther Filer, of Union Springs, N.Y.; sisters Wanda and husband, Ken Beach, of Morganton, N.C., Mildred and husband, John Van Vranken, of Edmeston, N.Y., and Esther Chandler of Hawley, Pa.; sister-in-law Phyllis Filer of Norwich, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren, Kenneth Hammond III, Karla Hammond, Amy and husband Frank Rock, Janie Hammond, Daniel and wife Annette Hammond, Ezra Hammond, Eric and wife Patti Hammond, Nicky Halperin, Seth Bordley, Tamara Nelson and Heidi Fischer; and six great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Jarvis, Marc and Tony Lizarraga, Sarah Hammond, Andrew Strum and Meredith Hammond.

She was predeceased by her husband, Bill Van Vranken, on Jan. 25, 1989; brothers, Donald Filer and Louis Filer; and sister, Gladys Barber.

Calling hours will be Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 34 River St., Otego, with the family in attendance.

Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Randy Palada at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bookhout Funeral Home, Otego.

Memorial donations may be made to Gilbertsville Emergency Squad, First Presbyterian Church of Gilbertsville or Catskill Area Hospice of Oneonta.

Burial will be in the spring at Brookside Cemetery in Gilbertsville by Bookhout Funeral Home, Otego.
