Catherine A. Reeve

COOPERSTOWN JUNCTION — Catherine A. Reeve, 84, of Cooperstown Junction, passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at The Meadows.

She was born Sept. 18, 1918, in Nineveh, the daughter of Hiram E. and Roby A. (Burke) Lord.

She married Charles F. Reeve on May 17, 1939, in Oneonta. He predeceased her on Jan. 6, 1995.

Over the years, Catherine was employed at the Oneonta Dress Factory, Spaulding Bakeries, Town House Motel and Knott's Motel.

She enjoyed being a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She also enjoyed reading puzzle books and her flower gardens.

Catherine also did volunteer work for both the Emmons and Cooperstown Junction United Methodist Churches. She was also actively involved in fund-raisers for the American Red Cross and other nonprofit organizations.

Catherine was a member of the Otsego County Cooperative Extension in the Home Demonstration Division for over 20 years. She taught leather crafting, smocking, Swedish embroidery, quilting and many other types of sewing. She also taught cooking and baking.

For many years, she was involved with exhibits in the Floral Hall and with the Little Theater Group at the Otsego County Fair in Morris.

She is survived by her son, Louis F. Reeve of Oneonta; a daughter, Wanda Bostwick and her husband, Charles, of Milford; three grandchildren, Geoffrey Murphy of Oneonta, Gina Bostwick of Milford and Wade Bostwick of Syracuse. Also, a sister, Leslie Decker of Mount Upton, survives her; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Two brothers, James and Augustus Lord; and two sisters, Minnie Scott and Anita Alger, predeceased her.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Friday, March 28, 2003, at 11 a.m. in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. John Dougherty officiating.

Spring burial will take place in Hillington Cemetery, Morris.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home Thursday evening from 7 until 9 p.m., at which time the family will be in attendance.

Flowers are welcome, or charitable contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820, in Catherine's memory.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

James V.B. Cooper

ONEONTA — Dr. James V.B. Cooper, 76, of Oneonta, died Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born July 7, 1926, in Cooperstown, the son of George F. and Hilda (Cornish) Cooper.

He married Sarah "Betsy" Eunson on April 9, 1949, in Penn Hills, Pa.

Jim grew up in the Milford area and graduated from Milford Central School. He then went on and graduated from Clarkson University receiving his bachelor's degree. Pursuing his master's degree, Jim graduated from Syracuse University and continued on and received his Ph.D. from Penn State University. While he was in Syracuse and also Penn State he taught some courses in the engineering department.

Jim was an electrical engineer and manager at IBM, Owego, for many years retiring in 1983. For a short time while at IBM and also following his retirement, Jim was an adjunct professor at Binghamton University.

He enjoyed tracing his family genealogy, listening to Big Band music, reading and gardening. He will be deeply missed by his family and his many friends.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Sarah "Betsy" Cooper, of Oneonta; his son, Scott E. Cooper and Catherine Holbert of Bainbridge; and his daughter, Gail E. Cooper of Sidney; two grandchildren, Tori Rifenburg and Ryan Holbert, both of Bainbridge; one brother and sister-in-law, Forrest and Adele Cooper of Sangerfield; two nephews and their spouses, Bruce and Debi Cooper of Grand Blanc, Mich., and Kipp and Jane Cooper of Norwich; one sister-in-law, Agnes L. Eunson of Murrysville, Pa.; two nephews and their spouses, Robert S. and Elizabeth Eunson of Rochester, Pa., and Arthur H. and Karen Eunson of Apollo, Pa.; as well as a nephew-in-law, Bob Diana of Oriskany.

Jim was predeceased by a niece, Jan Diana.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Sunday, March 30, 2003, at 3 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Judith Quarles, pastor of the Unitarian Universalist Church, Oneonta, officiating.

Burial will be held at a later date at the Milford Cemetery, Milford.

Calling hours will be offered on Sunday, from 1:30 p.m. until service time, at which time the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820, in loving memory of Dr. James V.B. Cooper.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Jean Rennie Salata

ONEONTA — Jean Rennie Salata, 76, of Oneonta died Monday, March 24, 2003, at the Oneonta Nursing & Rehabilitation Center after a brief illness.

She was born Jan. 12, 1927, in Oneonta, the daughter of William and Janet (Rennie) Hughes.

She married Steve Salata on Feb. 14, 1948, in Oneonta.

Mrs. Salata was an elementary education teacher in Morris, where she taught fifth grade until her retirement. She was a lifelong area resident and received both her bachelor's and master's degrees from the State University College at Oneonta.

She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Oneonta.

Mrs. Salata was a Master Bridge player and excelled in participation at various Bridge Tournaments throughout the Northeastern United States.

Mrs. Salata was an avid gardener and enjoyed knitting afghans and other items of clothing for charitable organizations.

Mrs. Salata is survived by her husband, Steve Salata, at home; three sons, Steve Jr. and his wife, Mary, of Waterville, David of Mesa, Ariz., and Paul of Chandler, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Jones of Hamilton, and Jennie Stanton of Cooperstown; a sister-in-law, Peg Hughes of Oneonta; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a brother, William Hughes.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial services will be held privately at the convenience of the family.

Those who wish may make contributions to the Oneonta Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, 330 Chestnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820, in memory of Mrs. Salata.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Ralph C. Whitney

FRANKLIN — Ralph Clinton Whitney, 95, of Franklin, died March 24, 2003 at A.O. Fox Nursing Home, after a long and productive life.

He was born Nov. 29, 1907, the son of Eugene Levi and Freda (Bannister) Whitney in Williamstown, Vt.

He earned his bachelor of science degree at Middlebury College in June 1933. He later returned to graduate work and received his master's degree at the University of Vermont.

Ralph began his lifelong career of teaching in Fairfax, Vt., and continued as a high school science and Vice Principal until 1974, when he retired from Delaware Literary Institute and Franklin Central School.

During World War II he worked as a metallurgist for Jones & Lamson, a defense plant in Springfield, Vt., then he became a partner in Weeks and Whitney Dairy in North Charleston, N.H. In 1949, he moved with his family to Franklin.

In 1956, with a few colleagues, he helped found the Delaware County Teachers Federal Credit Union, now the Chen-Del-O Federal Credit Union, and became its treasurer for many years.

He was a 50-plus member of the Franklin F.&A.M. Lodge No. 562, and a member of the Franklin United Methodist Church since 1950. Ralph was a staunch member of the National Education Association, serving each of these organizations in many capacities.

Ralph was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy (Andrews) Whitney, whom he married June 21, 1936. Also, by Susan Whitney, Donald, Susan and Joseph Westcott.

Ralph is survived by four children, Ernest, Carolyn and Wayne Worden, Joanne Westcott and D. Louise and Donald Hebbard; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Gene Whitney and Jill, Jason and Brent Whitney, Mitchell and Sonya Worden, Wendy Worden and Corey Schmitz, Kathi Westcott and Teri, Tim, Tracy, Megan and T.J. Hebbard, Anthony, Kristin and Katherin Hebbard, Carensa, Mike and Shelby Hunter, Jennifer Hebbard and fiance, Nate, and Heather, Oliver and Liam Gingrich.

As an educator, Ralph felt strongly about students furthering their knowledge by a hands-on participation, so many years ago he made the decision to donate his total body to The Anatomical Gift Program at The Albany Medical College for this purpose.

Memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Contributions in Ralph Whitney's memory may be sent to the Memorial Fund of the Franklin United Methodist Church in Franklin, NY 13775.

Frank Kerzner

HARPERSFIELD — Frank Kerzner, 81, died Saturday, March 22, 2003, at St. John's Hospital in Elmhurst.

He was a resident of Harpersfield for 20 years, relocating from Ridgewood.

Frank was a World War II veteran in the European Theatre with the 3rd Army, 774th Tank Destroyer Battalion under the command of General George Patton.

He was an active member of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Stamford, a member and past president of Stamford Senior Citizen Association and was an officer in both the Stamford VFW and the Delhi American Legion.

He will be remembered by his wife of 56 years, Pat; his sons, Paul of Ridgewood and Robert of Hartsville, S.C.; his sister Molly Schoenmuller of Middlevillage; and his grandsons, David and John of Hartsville, S.C.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford, on Friday, March 28, 2003, from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Anthony Ligato at the Sacred Heart R.C.C. in Stamford at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2003.

Interment will follow at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Stamford.

Donations may be made in Frank's memory to the Sacred Heart R.C.C. in Stamford.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home under the direction of William A. Tari.

Wesley Cleveland

ONEONTA — Wesley E. Cleveland, 71, a longtime resident of Oneonta, passed away on Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home.

He was born Feb. 10, 1932, in Mount Vision, the son of J. Harmon Cleveland and Lena (Parker) Cleveland.

On Aug. 20, 1961, Wesley married Nancy A. Lyon in Mount Vision.

He was a member of the Labors' Union Local No. 643, from which he retired after over 25 years of service. He also served as Sergeant at Arms for 10 years with his union.

Wesley was a trainer for the Oneonta Indians semi-pro football team during the 1970s. He also enjoyed woodworking.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Cleveland, of Oneonta; his son, Terry Cleveland and his wife, Michele, of Mount Vision; and his daughters, Renee Andrews and her husband, Peter, of Oneonta, and Peggy Rowe and her husband, Gregory, of Syracuse; his brother, Wilbur Cleveland and his wife, Daria, of Mount Vision; his brothers-in-law, William Schneible of Rome and Allen Thorn of Milford; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Richard and Dorothy (Lyon) Wooden of Oneonta; his grandchildren, John Andrews of Pottstown, Pa., Danielle Andrews of Highland Mills, Katrina Andrews of Oneonta, James Cleveland and Benjamin Cleveland of Mount Vision; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his sister, Louise Schneible in 1998; and a great-grandson in 1999.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2003, at 11 a.m. in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Gary Bonebrake, pastor of the Main Street Baptist Church, Oneonta, officiating.

Burial will take place at a later date in Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home Friday evening from 7 until 9 p.m., at which time the family will be present.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Heart Gifts Processing Center, P.O. Box 3049, Syracuse, NY 13220-3049 or to the American Diabetes Association, New York State-Memorial Processing Center, P.O. Box 31160, Hartford, CT 06150-1160 in Wesley's memory.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Harlan E. Hine

REDFIELD — Harlan E. Hine, 76, of Redfield died Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at the Oswego Hospital, Oswego.

He was born Feb. 4, 1927, in Laurens, the son of Samuel and Edith (Cook) Hine.

He married Ruth Albert on July 14, 1957, in Sherburne.

Harlan was a United States Army veteran having served during World War II in Japan.

Harlan owned and operated a dairy farm on Patrick Hill in Morris for many years. He then purchased the lease on the Perch Lake Wildlife Refuge Camp in Pamelia and became a commercial fisherman.

Harlan was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend who will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Ruth Hine, of Redfield; his son, Daniel Hine of Mapleview; his daughter and son-in-law, Eileen and Bill Fairbrother of Mapleview; his four grandchildren, Charlie and Lori Hine and Benjamin and Jonathan Fairbrother; his brother and sister-in-law, Leland and Mary Hine of Washington, D.C.; and his niece Judy Campbell of Washington, D.C.

Graveside services will be held at a later date at the Cook Cemetery, West Oneonta. There will be no calling hours.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Heart Association, Heart Gifts Processing Center, P.O. Box 3049, Syracuse, N.Y. 13220-3049 in loving memory of Harlan E. Hine.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Kenraid Shields

NEW LISBON — Kenraid (Ken) Shields, 86, died at Oneonta Nursing & Rehabilitation Center on March 25, 2003, due to complications from lymphoma.

Ken was born on Mt. Utsayantha, near Stamford in Delaware County on March 16, 1917. He was the fifth son of Robert and E. Grace (Boggs) Shields. He was predeceased by brothers, Bernald, Fenton, George and Lyle.

When Ken was 2 years old, the family moved to Morris, settling in the Light Homestead, overlooking the village. He grew up and attended schools in Morris, graduating in 1934. He then attended the Crane School of Music at Potsdam Normal School, now the State University College at Potsdam, where he met Doris Pederson, who became his wife.

They resided in Morris until 1950, when they moved to New Lisbon and purchased the Clayton Lull farm, known to this day as Sugar Ridge Farm.

Ken was employed as a youth by Morris Manor Farms, Linn Manufacturing of Morris and was self-employed with friend Dick Campfield as Campfield & Shields, painters & decorators and Musson Brothers Tree Surgeons.

After serving in World War II, in the Pacific Theater as a radio operator and field artillery, Ken was employed by Scintilla Corporation. He then taught music at Laurens Central School until joining the New York State Division of Employment as a farm representative in the Oneonta and Norwich offices.

In 1966, Ken devoted himself fully to Sugar Ridge Farm, breeding and raising a fine herd of registered Jersey cattle. Ken remained actively involved in the farm until the time of his illness.

Ken's hobbies included hunting and other outdoor activities such as maple syrup production, forestry, firewood and carpentry. A fine baritone, Ken sang with numerous local choral groups, and as recently as last year, 2002, Ken sang at the funeral of a family friend. He was one of the original members of the Oneonta Chorale, now known as the Catskill Choral Society, and did solo work in several area churches.

He was highly skilled at all types of equipment maintenance and repair, which served him well in his primary avocation, Sugar Ridge Farm. Starting with two horses and six cows, Ken developed the farm into a registered Jersey dairy. The herd was the result of great emphasis placed on breeding and quality farming practices. The family showed their prize Jerseys regularly at the Otsego County Fair.

Ken joined the Morris United Methodist Church when he was 13 years old and was one of their oldest living members. He was a church trustee for many years, and periodically directed or sang in the church choir. He served as a trustee of the Village Library in Morris and was active with The American Jersey Cattle Association, The New York Farm Bureau, The Delaware Jersey Cattle Club and The Nature Conservancy. He served as a tax assessor for the town of New Lisbon for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Doris P. Shields; sons, Bruce of New Lisbon, David and wife, Diana, of Kodiak Island, Alaska, Eric of Morris, and Chris and wife, Barbara, of Treadwell; and daughter, Kristina of New Lisbon; six grandchildren, Meredith of White Plains, Erika of Atlanta, Ga., Sylvana of West Orange, N.J., Clark of Cambridge, Mass., Luvonne and Linn of Kodiak Island, Alaska; many nieces and nephews; dear friend Audrey Shields of Cherry Valley; brother-in-law Dr. Thoru Pederson of Worcester, Mass.; and sister-in-law Hilda Bigwood of Williamsville.

A memorial service will be held at the Morris United Methodist Church at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2003, with the Rev. Ann Blair officiating. Family will greet friends immediately following the service in the lower level of the church.

In lieu of flowers, friends are invited to make contributions to the Memorial Fund at the Morris United Methodist Church or the Village Library of Morris, NY 13808.

Internment will be later in the spring. Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Robert D. Walling

FLAGLER BEACH, Fla. — Robert D. Walling, 68, of John Anderson Highway, a resident since 2002, died March 13, 2003, at home.

He was born on May 15, 1934, in Treadwell, N.Y., the son of Carl E. Walling and Edith Louise (Alexander) Walling.

After living 68 years in Oneonta, he moved to Flagler Beach, Fla.

Mr. Walling retired from employment after 25 years of working as a maintenance man for the City of Oneonta Wastewater Treatment Plant, Oneonta.

He enjoyed motorcycles and collecting antiques and coins.

Mr. Walling is survived by two daughters, Gail DeCola, Remsen, N.Y., and Royce Barthelmes, Conway, S.C.

Arrangements were under the direction of New Life Cremation, Ormond Beach, Fla.
