Katherine F. Jones

JEFFERSON — Katherine F. Jones, 93, died peacefully Friday, May 9, 2003, at Robinson Terrace in Stamford.

A longtime area resident, she lived in Jefferson before moving to Robinson Terrace.

She was born Dec. 17, 1909. She married J. Gerald Jones on June 8, 1944. Her husband and their 9-year-old daughter, Joanie, predeceased Katherine.

She worked at St. Vincent's Hospital in New York City, from 1930 to 1944, serving as a nurse's aide, Main Kitchen attendant and Central Supply attendant. She returned in 1951 and worked in medical records. It was at the hospital that she met her future husband, Gerald.

She was a cleaning lady at the Stamford Hospital in the early 1960s. She retired to Jefferson in the early 1970s.

She is survived by her nieces and nephews; and her close friends, Mary Jane and Ike Rogers and their family.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford, Tuesday, May 13, 2003, from 6 to 8 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Fr. Anthony Ligato in the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Stamford at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2003. Burial will follow at the Evergreen Cemetery in Jefferson.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Julia Puchalski

HERKIMER — Julia Puchalski, 91, of 104 North Washington St., formerly of Church Street, Richfield Springs, entered into eternal rest on Monday morning, May 12, 2003, in Folts Homes, Herkimer.

She was born on May 29, 1911, in Williamsbridge, daughter of the late Frank and Stella Schilling Polchinski. Julia was raised in the Bronx where she graduated from New York City public schools.

On Aug. 16, 1930, she married John F. Puchalski in Saint Valentines Church, Williamsbridge. They shared a loving union of 49 years until his passing in 1979.

For 15 years, she was the bookkeeper for the General Tire Company in New Rochelle, retiring in 1970. A resident of Richfield Springs since 1988, she came here from Red Hook.

Julia had a strong belief in God and led a devoted Catholic life. She was a member of Saint Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs.

She will always be remembered as a loving and caring person who gloried in being blessed with 39 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Surviving are two daughters and their husbands, Ann and Richard D. Owens of Richfield Springs, and Margaret and Andrew Peternel of Milwaukee, Wis.; five sons and their wives, John F. and Mary Puchalski of the Bronx, Martin and Kay Puchalski of Lake Carmel, Thomas and Patricia Puchalski of Valhalla, Joseph and Marge Puchalski of Mount Vernon, and Frank and Patricia Puchalski of the Bronx; three brothers and their wives, William and Ann Polchinski of Riverhead, Edward and Ida Polchinski, and Robert and Florence Polchinski, all of Yonkers; 39 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, John; a sister, Estelle Hasselberg; one brother, Frank and sister-in-law, Frances Polchinski, preceded her in death.

Funeral from J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, on Friday at 10:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow in Saint Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Terence Healy officiating. Mrs. Puchalski will then be laid to rest in Saint Joseph's Cemetery.

The family will be present to receive relatives and friends on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Expressions of sympathy, may be made to Saint Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs or the Alzheimer Unit of Folts Homes, Herkimer. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Donald R. Bartley

OTEGO — Donald Raymond Bartley, 75, of Otego passed away at his home on Monday, May 12, 2003.

He was born on Jan. 19, 1928, in Washingtonville, the son of Vernard and Martha (Bartley) Christian.

He married Josephine F. Smith on Jan. 28, 1950.

Don worked for Schindler/Westinghouse in Rockefeller Center, New York City, as an elevator mechanic for 25 years. He also served four years as a merchant marine. He also was a member of the Otego Planning Board.

His wife, Josephine Bartley of Otego, survives him. He is also survived by his son, Clifford A. Bartley and his wife, Darlene of Goshen; his daughter, Dawn E. Miezeiewski and her husband, Robert of Oakland, N.J.; a brother, Vernard "Skippy" Christian and his wife, Jacqueline; as well as his three grandchildren, Heather M. Bartley, Amber D. Bartley and Curtis R. Miezeiewski.

Funeral services for Donald R. Bartley will be held on Friday, May 16, 2003, at 10 a.m. in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 34 River St., in Otego, with the Rev. Fred Albrecht, pastor of the Otego United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Otego Evergreen Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home in Otego on Thursday evening, from 6 to 8 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in Don's memory.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Otego.

Elizabeth A. Burgess

CHERRY VALLEY — Elizabeth A. Burgess of Cherry Valley, passed away peacefully at the Delaware County Countryside Care Center on May 8, 2003. She was 83.

Betty was born in Duluth, Minn., on July 16, 1919, to George and Eva Burgess. She moved with her family to New York City when she was 6 years old.

She was a graduate of Columbia University. She worked at a bank, then at a Loews Theater, which her father managed.

Betty married Robert W. Stenz in 1943, and moved to Long Island, to raise a family.

Betty loved traveling and camping. She was an avid sailor and an excellent cook. She kept an organic garden for many years. She was a lover and patron of music and the arts.

Besides raising a family, she had an Avon business and restored antiques. In later years she worked as a motel manager. She also worked as a nanny and helped raise many children.

Betty is survived by her brother, William Burgess of Jupiter, Fla.; and all her children, Carol Stenz of Maryland, Robert, and Patricia Stenz of Cassville, Laura Lee of Cherry Valley, William and Sabine Bozeman Stenz of Bovina Center, Richard Stenz of Amsterdam, Gerard and Karen Stenz of Middlefield Center, and Mary and Wayne Munson of Pittsgrove, N.J. Also six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband; and her sister, Dorothy Stayne.

Memorial services will be at the MacArthur Funeral Home, 131 Main St., Delhi, at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, May 16, 2003.

Donations can be made to Countryside Care, in lieu of flowers at 41861 State Highway 10, Delhi, NY 13753.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Joseph F. Giallanzo

DAVENPORT — Joseph F. Giallanzo, 60, of Davenport died Monday, May 12, 2003, at home after a lengthy illness.

He was born Aug. 25, 1942, in Brooklyn, the son of Philip and Mary Giallanzo.

He married Maureen J. Bulling on April 4, 1964, in Lindenhurst on Long Island.

Joe served in the U.S. Army after graduating from high school.

He lived in Brooklyn, then moved to Long Island until he retired to Davenport, 13 years ago.

Joe will be remembered as a man who worked hard in his life and was very dedicated to his wife and family.

He was an avid hunter and he enjoyed the outdoors. He loved raising and running his beagles. He was a member of the Klipknockie & Mid-Valley Beagle Clubs in which he made many good friends through the years.

Joe is survived by his loving wife, Maureen; his daughter, Patricia of Oneonta; and his son, Joseph of Davenport. He has three grandchildren, Krista, Anthony and Markie.

The family will be receiving friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 15, 2003, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta. Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, officiating.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Bravin, Dr. Hameed and the nursing staff at Louis B. Hagar Cancer Clinic at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, for their wonderful care and support during his illness and Catskill Area Hospice for making his final days comfortable.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Joe's memory may be made to Louis B. Hagar Cancer Clinic, Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, NY 13326 or Catskill Area Hospice.

George Popp

PEEKSKILL — Dr. George Popp of Corlandt Manor, went to be with his Lord on May 12, 2003, at 84.

Dr. Popp was an anesthesiologist at the Peekskill Community Hospital for over 20 years.

Dr. Popp was born in a small coal mining town in Pennsylvania and had many fond memories of growing up during the depression. Dr. Popp attended Franklin Marshall University and obtained his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College.

He served in the United States Army Aircorps from 1941 to 1943.

Other than his family and his great devotion to God, Dr. Popp's greatest pleasures were flying planes, model airplanes and horse racing. He also enjoyed spending time at his homes in Stamford, and Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Martha; his daughter, Miriam Popp and son-in-law, Peter Seeley of Scarsdale; and daughter, Cathy Popp-McKenna and son-in-law, Dennis McKenna of Stamford.

Calling hours are Thursday, May 15, 2003, from 7 to 9 p.m. at E.O. Curry Funeral Home, 313 North James St., Peekskill. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, May 16, 2003, at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Peekskill.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Saint Rita Society, 1166 South Broad St., Philadelphia, PA. 19146.

Bruce D. Kurtz

ONEONTA — A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2003, to celebrate the life and work of Bruce D. Kurtz, a former Hartwick College professor of art and art history, who died on March 22, 2003, in Phoenix, Ariz. The service is planned for the Celebration Room of Shineman Chapel on the Hartwick campus.

After joining the Hartwick faculty in 1969, Kurtz taught at the College until 1985, when he moved to Arizona to become the curator of 20th century art at the Phoenix Art Museum.

The author of two college textbooks on art, Kurtz became well known as a critic focused on video art. He wrote for numerous publications, including Arts Magazine and Art in America.

Friends and colleagues are invited to attend the service.

Harris G. Clark Jr.

COOPERSTOWN — Committal and burial services for Harris G. Clark Jr., who died Feb. 24, 2003, will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Lakewood Cemetery in Cooperstown.

Arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Nancy J. Murphy

MORRIS — Friends are invited to attend graveside committal services for Nancy J. Murphy, who died March 29, 2003. Services will be held on Friday, May 16, 2003, at 2 p.m. in Hillington Cemetery in Morris, with the Rev. Ann Blair officiating.

George E. Bell

UNADILLA — A graveside committal service for George E. Bell, who passed away Feb. 13, 2003, will be held in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla, Saturday, May 17, 2003, at 11 a.m.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

James E. Staroba

DAVENPORT — James E. Staroba of Davenport died at his home on Tuesday, May 13, 2003.

Jim was born on June 16, 1941, in Schenectady, the son of Edward Henry and Cecelia (Cieplinski) Staroba.

He married Elizabeth (Betty) Ann Kapela on Jan. 8, 1963, in Schenectady, where they lived until moving to Davenport, in 1969.

Jim attended Draper High School and the Spencer Business School.

He was honorably discharged from the Army Reserves in 1967, after eight years of service.

In 1963, he began working as a court stenographer for the Department of Motor Vehicles. He was also at one time a machinist and lathe operator at the General Electric Plant in Schenectady, working until 1969.

He later became a Conservation Officer for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation having been stationed in Stamford. After years of service and an early retirement he then entered into various types of employment including: the D&H Railroad where he fueled engines; King's Department Store where he worked as a security guard; the USPS as a postal clerk and mail carrier, and lastly for SYMAN ARTS in 1994, where he built custom picture frames and canvas stretchers.

Jim was an avid outdoorsman and photographer. He enjoyed hiking, hunting and snowshoeing as well as country music and dancing.

He had a large collection of knives, guns and wolf collectibles. He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.

He always had a joke or quick fact ready for whomever he ran into. He was a caring, friendly man with a wonderful sense of humor who will be greatly missed by everyone that knew him.

Jim is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; and their three sons, Wesley and his wife, Sandra, and their two daughters, Alexandria and Ashleigh of Schenectady, Shawn of Schenectady, and Edward and his wife, Tracy and their daughter, Cassidy and son, Evan James of Jefferson; his mother, Cecelia of Schenectady; a brother, Edward and his wife, Linda and their daughter, Rachel and her husband, Richard of Schenectady; as well as aunts, uncles, cousins, many friends and acquaintances.

He was predeceased by his father, Edward, and a brother, Frederick.

Informal calling hours will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2003, from noon to 3 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Davenport. Following the calling hours there will be a gathering at Vern's Restaurant, Davenport.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or the National Rifle Association.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Davenport.

Helena R. Staats

MILFORD — Mrs. Helena R. Staats, 66, of Milford died Tuesday night, May 13, 2003, at Bassett Healthcare.

She was born on July 28, 1936, in Hoboken, N.J., a daughter of Frederick and Helena (Barnes) Rexer.

After graduating from Bergenfield High School, she worked in a dress factory.

She married Peter Staats on Oct. 8, 1961, in New Jersey. They moved to the Milford area in 1973.

Helena worked in the cafeteria at Bassett Healthcare for 10 years, until her health forced her to retire.

She was a charter member of the Twin Mothers of Bergen County, N.J.

She enjoyed arts and crafts, especially knitting and crocheting. She was devoted to her family and was also an avid fan of soap operas.

Helena is survived by her husband of 41 years, Peter; four sons and three daughters-in-law, John and Wanda Staats of Maryland, Robert Staats of Hartwick, Peter and Deborah Staats of Maryland, and Frederick and Laura Staats of Milford; three grandchildren, Kelsey, Cheryl and Michael Staats; a sister, Ruth Ann Wess of Pagoda, N.J.; a brother, Frederick Rexer of Grovetown, Ga.; a brother-in-law and his wife, Joseph and Jeanette Staats of Ringwood, N.J.; a sister-in-law, Joan Staats of Paramus, N.J.; an aunt, Cora Voss of Rutherford, N.J.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, William Staats in 1976; and a brother, William Rexer.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Milford. Burial will follow in the Milford Cemetery.

Calling hours will be on Friday, May 16, 2003, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Milford, from 5 to 8 p.m., when the family will be in attendance.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Elva H. Bell

ONEONTA — Elva H. Bell, 85, of Oneonta died May 13, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born Aug. 9, 1917, in Grand Gorge, the daughter of Neander K. and Cora Mackey Houck.

Elva graduated from high school and then attended Briggs School of Beauty and Culture in Albany.

She opened her own beauty shop in West End Oneonta and then moved it to West Laurens when she moved there.

She married Ralph W. "Spike" Bell in Oneonta on July 20, 1951. He predeceased her on April 24, 1972.

Elva was employed by the Otsego County Nutritional Center in Oneonta for 18 years as center manager and retired in 1991.

Elva was a very active member of Elm Park United Methodist Church and taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, served on the Worship Committee and helped with meals through the WSCS. She was also a member of the Laurens Chapter 518 Order of the Eastern Star, where she was a past Matron and a New York State Associate Grand Warder. Elva was also a member of the Senior Citizens of Elm Park.

Elva is survived by her daughter, Laura and husband, Ralph Brightman of Laurens; grandsons, Michael Brightman of Milford, and Benjamin Brightman of Sidney; nieces, Mary Porfert and Janet Smith; and nephew, Stanley Houck.

She was predeceased by her parents; husband; and two brothers, Olen Houck and Clifton "Red" Houck.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, by the Rev. Eileen Cornwell. Calling hours will be Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. with the family present and an Eastern Star service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Bookhout Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the choir fund of the Elm Park United Methodist Church, 401 Chestnut St., Oneonta.

Arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.
