Lucille Chambers

MORRIS — Lucille Myrtle Chambers, 66, of Morris died Friday, June 20, 2003, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born Oct. 15. 1936, in Beaver Meadow, the daughter of Francis and Mary Mudge.

She was married to Charles Chambers on Sept. 8, 1958, in Naples, Fla. He died March 24, 1995.

She is survived by her children, Rayburn Chambers of Morris, Marvin Chambers of Pittsfield, Jodie Mills and husband, George, of Morris, Charlotte McMullen and husband, Charles, of Pittsfield; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Her brothers and sisters include Jim Mudge and wife, Elvira, of Preston, Charles Mudge and wife, Fay, of Morris, William Mudge of Morris, Ray Mudge and wife, Hazel, of Colton, Roy Mudge and wife, Vinnie, of South New Berlin, Gladys Pope of Gilbertsville, Doris Douglas of New Berlin, Viola Madsen and husband, Larry, of Pittsfield, and Mary Mudge of Pittsfield; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A sister, Julia Brazee, predeceased her.

Calling hours will be from from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2003. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, with the Rev. Daniel Lambertson officiating. Committal services and burial will follow at the Edmeston Union Cemetery, Edmeston.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

James Van Riper

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — James Van Riper, 58, died unexpectedly in his home Saturday, June 14, 2003.

He is survived by his wife, Susan; and their two sons, Lucas James and Derek Thomas; his daughter, Laura Van Riper of Oregon; and his two children, Carolyn and James Van Riper of New Jersey.

Jim served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1961-1967, and also served in the Merchant Marines.

He was a member of the Richfield Springs Lions Club, the American Legion and the Ilion Marine Corps League.

Jim and Sue moved to Richfield Springs in 1990, and opened the Genesee Restaurant and Tap Room in 1991.

Formal funeral services will be held in New Jersey, where his brother and four sisters still reside.

For close friends of the family, arrangements are also being made for a memorial service to be held in Richfield Springs.

Marie S. Wright

LIVERPOOL — Marie S. Wright, 98, of Liverpool, formerly of Schenectady, died Friday, June 20, 2003, at Birchwood Health Care Center.

She was born in Prattsville. Marie was a former postal clerk for the U.S. Postal Service in Prattsville.

She was a life member and past patron of the Eastern Star in Prattsville.

Marie and her first husband, Boyce Spaulding, owned the Catskill Mountains Bowling Academy.

She was a member of Westminster United Presbyterian Church, Schenectady.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Boyce Spaulding, in 1963, and her second husband, Otis Wright, in 1979.

Marie is survived by a nephew, Carlton (Laura) Swanker of Cicero.

There are no calling hours.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at Fairlawn Cemetery, Prattsville.

Maurer Funeral Home, Liverpool, has charge of arrangements.

Earl R. Briggs

HOBART — Earl R. Briggs, 86, of Hobart, died Sunday, June 22, 2003, at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

He was born June 7, 1917, in the town of Harpersfield, the son of Jesse and Grace (Mattice) Briggs. He was a man that was proud to tell his age.

Earl was a carpenter "Extraordinaire." He was an expert in metal and woodworking and had the exceptional ability to visualize a project long before it was completed.

It was well-known in the area that "You could never go wrong with Earl Briggs" a quote from the headline of an article in the Mountain Eagle Newspaper about his artisanship from a few years ago.

He was known to help everyone with fixing, repairing or recreating anything in metal or wood.

October 28, 1937, he married Virginia Campagna in South Kortright.

He loved fishing and hunting and most especially his fishing trips to Canada.

Earl was a wonderful father, grandfather and friend to all.

His wife, Virginia; and four children survive, Priscilla McGrath, Oneonta, Jana and Roger Bresee, Delhi, Barbara Stuckey, Florida, and William Briggs, Hobart; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will take place on Thursday, June 26, 2003, at 2 p.m. in Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart, with Pastor Richard Elder officiating. A reception at the Hobart United Methodist Church will follow the service.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Hobart Fire Department.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Seth R. Thompson

WALTON — Seth R. Thompson of Walton, a retired mechanical engineer, died Saturday, June 21, 2003, at his home in Walton. He was 95.

Mr. Thompson worked for many years as a contractor for the military and was instrumental in the design and development of the helicopter.

Seth R. Thompson was born June 24, 1907, in Jersey City, N.J., to Seth B. and Helen Ackerman Thompson.

He earned a bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering from the University of Alabama in Birmingham, in 1929, and a minor in mechanical engineering.

He lived in Walton for the past 33 years. Prior to that he lived in Sayre, Pa.

Mr. Thompson is survived by three sons, John Roger of Walton, Marc Anthony of Chicopee, Mass., and James Edward of Atlanta, Ga.; and a daughter, Colby Anne of Walton. A grandson, James Edward Jr., also survives.

At Mr. Thompson's request, there is no service. Burial was in Walton Cemetery.

John and Colby invite friends to their home at 25 High St., Walton, on Aug. 16, 2003, for a gathering of community and celebration of John's 48th birthday.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the First Baptist Church, Walton, for Missionary Work, in his name would be appreciated.

Funeral arrangements are by Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc. Funeral Home, Walton.

Helen Tolmie

COOPERSTOWN — A committal service and burial, with full military honors, for Helen Tolmie, 80, of Cooperstown, who died Jan. 16, 2003, will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 27, 2003, in Dunning Street Cemetery, Malta.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Michael J. Turner

WORCESTER — Michael James Turner, 35, passed away Sunday, June 22, 2003, at his home with his family by his side after a hard battle with cancer.

He was born Jan. 18, 1968, in Huntington, the son of John H. and Jacqueline (O'Brien) Turner.

Michael and his family moved to Worcester in 1972. He attended and graduated from Worcester Central School, Class of 1986. After high school he moved to DeLand, Fla., where he met Sherri L. Smith, they married on July 11, 1992, in Worcester, by the Rev. Judith A. Thistle.

After returning to Florida, their son, Michael Jr. "Moey" was born. In 1993, the family moved back to Worcester and their daughter, Alyssa Paige "Ali" was born.

Michael owned and operated Karker Tree and Aerial Services for the past nine years.

He was an avid sports player all through school and lifetime fan of the New York Yankees, Buffalo Bills and Syracuse sports.

Michael was a great father, husband, brother, son, grandson and best friend to all.

He enjoyed working hard both at his business and at home, always painting, landscaping and improving his home for his family, never taking time for himself. His best shopping times were at Home Depot.

He loved to be with his entire family. Michael will be lovingly missed by his children, wife, parents, brother, sister and all of his family and friends.

Michael leaves behind, his wife, Sherri; children, Michael Jr. "Moey" 10, and Alyssa Paige "Ali" 6; parents, John and Jackie Turner; his brother, John Jr.; his sister, Shannon Turner; maternal grandmother, Edna O'Brien; in-laws, Jim and Elaine Smith; "Oma" Ann Zschemisch; aunts and uncles, Jerry and Patti Ortolani and Jim and Jule Turner; cousins, Amy and Seth Ortolani and James, Jason and Tara Turner; Grandma Ortolani; Aunt Michele Kenney and Uncle Joe Brennen; cousins, Jack and Bridgette Kenney and their children, Katherine and John, Ed and Audrey Kenney, Coleen Cardone, Shelly Putnam; Uncle Marv, Uncle Alton; and all of Michael's lifelong friends.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, June 26, 2003, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester.

Calling hours will be held again Friday, June 27, 2003, from 5 p.m. to the funeral service time at 7 p.m. at the Second Baptist Church, Main Street, Worcester, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, pastor, officiating.

A private burial will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery, Worcester, at later date.

Contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc. or to Moey and Ali's Education Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Ruth Anne Walley

FRANKLIN — Memorial services and a tree planting ceremony for Ruth Anne Walley, who passed away unexpectedly May 1, 2003, will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 29, 2003, on Snakehill Road in Franklin.

Floyd A. Dana

ONEONTA — Floyd A. Dana, 86, of Oneonta, passed away on Monday, June 23, 2003, at his residence.

He was born on Aug. 4, 1916, in Cooperstown, the son of Ernest and Eva (Toles) Dana.

He married Bertha Schuster on Aug. 9, 1947, in St. James Church in Oneonta.

Floyd graduated from Oneonta High School in 1934, and Hartwick College in 1938.

He served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1945, and was discharged as a Chief Warrant Officer.

He worked for New York State Electric and Gas in Oneonta for 43 years, and retired in 1983, as a resident engineer.

Floyd was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Atonement, an honorary member of the Oneonta Country Club, where he was former chairman of the Greens Committee, BPOE 1312, and Oneonta American Legion Post 259.

He is survived by his wife, Bertha S. Dana, of Oneonta; a daughter, Susan K. Dana, and her loving companion, Les LeViness of Oneonta; his grandchildren, Matthew R. Klafehn of Latham, and Cory M. Klafehn of Oneonta; as well as several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 26, 2003, at 11 a.m. in the Lutheran Church of the Atonement, Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul R. Messner, vacancy pastor officiating. Burial will follow in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Friends may call on Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lutheran Church of the Atonement, Oneonta.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Doris J. Moore

NEW HARTFORD — Doris J. Moore, 71, passed away unexpectedly on June 23, 2003, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

She was born in Oneonta, a daughter of the late Raymond and Leona Utter Barbin, and received her education in Oneonta schools, graduating with the Class of 1949.

In 1953, she was married to Clair W. "Duke" Moore, a loving union of 32 years until his passing in 1985.

From 1949 until 1960, Doris was employed for the Oneonta Building and Loan and after moving to Utica in 1960, began her working career with Chicago Pneumatic as manager of Compensation and Benefits, retiring in 1994, after 34 years of faithful service.

Doris was past president of the New York State Division of the National Secretaries Association and was instrumental in forming the New York State Chapter of Preretirement Planners.

Family was an important part of Doris' life, especially the times she spent with her grandson, Michael, bird watching or taking frequent trips to the zoo. She enjoyed animals of all kinds, especially birds, and held life memberships in more than one zoo.

She was considered the family "organizer" and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Doris is survived by her son, Kurt V. Moore of Syracuse; her grandson, Michael Moore of Syracuse; her brother, Donald Barbin of Cortland; her sister, Alice Colwell of Oneonta; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Friday at the Smith Funeral Home, 3022 Oneida St., Sauquoit. For funeral time, please call (315) 737-7327. Calling hours will be Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Donations in Doris' name may be made to the Utica Zoo. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

M. Evelyn Thomson

DELHI — M. Evelyn Thomson, 85, of the Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi, died Sunday, June 22, 2003, at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

She was born on Oct. 21, 1917, in Delhi, the daughter of Francis and Hattie M. (Thomson) Thomson.

Evelyn was a graduate of Delaware Academy in Delhi and Delhi College, She also graduated from Hartwick College, Class of 1940, and taught high school business subjects in Greenwood, Milford and Margaretville.

In Oneonta, she served briefly as executive secretary for the Oneonta Chapter of the American Red Cross. Following, she was office manager for the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, a national accreditation association for Teachers Colleges. For 20 years she was with the Oneonta City School District as Executive Secretary to the Superintendent of Schools.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Oneonta serving as choir member and elder. Also, she was a member and Past President of the Oneonta Business Women's Club and a member of Martha Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star.

In 1979, she retired and moved to Delhi. There she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church serving as a chancel choir member for 20 years, church treasurer for three years and two years as trustee. She was also a member and served on committees of the Delhi Business and Professional Women's Organization.

She is survived by a sister, Margaret T. Sweetman of Cato; a sister-in-law, Kathryn B. Thomson of Delhi; five nephews, two nieces, several great- nieces, nephews and cousins, James and Nancy Thomson of Delhi, John and Susan Thomson of Avon, Conn., Kathleen T. and Kevin Sullivan of Delhi, Henry and Martha Sweetman of Nashville, Tenn., Robert and Karen Sweetman of Olney, Md., James and Kimberly Sweetman of Tempe, Ariz., Donna and Daniel Hatzl of Minooka, Ill.; and one great-great-niece.

She was predeceased by her brother, Robert F. Thomson of Delhi; and a nephew, Thomas E. Sweetman of Texas.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral services will take place Thursday, June 26, 2003, at 11 a.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, with the Very Rev. Paul J. Hartt and the Rev. Lisa Heckman officiating.

Burial will follow the services in Woodland Cemetery, Delhi. Family and friends are invited to a reception at the First Presbyterian Church, Delhi, immediately following the committal.

Donations in Evelyn's memory can be made to the First Presbyterian Church Music Fund, Clinton Street, Delhi, N.Y. 13753.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

James F. Murray

GUILFORD — James Francis Murray of Guilford, died on Monday afternoon, June 23, 2003, at 3:15 p.m. at the Gilmore Nursing Home in Norwich, after a long illness.

He was born in Brooklyn, on June 13, 1919, the son of Thomas and Lillian (Seaman) Murray.

Before moving to Guilford he was from Mastic Beach, and member of the Mastic Beach Fire Department and was a Chief of the Mastic Beach Fire Department and also drove ambulance for the Emergency Squad.

In 1967, he married Betty Parr in Center Moriches.

He was employed at Amphenol in Sidney, until retiring from there. He was also a member of the Teamsters Union No. 584 in New York City.

He is survived by his wife, Betty (Betsey) Murray, in Guilford; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Colleen Murray of Keller, Texas, and Timothy and Wendy Murray of Guilford; three grandchildren, Sean Murray of Norwich, Seanus and Keegan Murray, both of Keller, Texas; a brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Sylvia Murray of Texas; two sisters, Muriel Schimmer and Lillian Murray, both of Smithtown; several nephews and nieces, two cousins, George Seaman and Katherine Garlipp.

The family will receive friends on Friday, June 27, 2003, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dorothy Memorial Home, 58 West Main St., Bainbridge. The funeral will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2003, at 10 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on River Street in Sidney, with Father Michael Shank officiating.

Burial will be at a later date in Gospel Hill Cemetery in Guilford.

Arrangements were entrusted to Nick E. Ferrentelli and Arthur N. Jones and the Dorothy Memorial Homes of Afton and Bainbridge.

Memorial gifts to St. Jude's Hospital in Memphis, TN.
