Arlene G. Palm

SOUTH KORTRIGHT — Arlene G. Palm, 85, of South Kortright, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, at home.

She was born on Sept. 7, 1917, West Leyden, the daughter of Andrew and Emma (Schoff) Katsmayer.

Arlene and Albert recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary and were honored with a party given by their children and grandchildren. They were married April 18, 1938, in West Leyden.

Arlene is survived by her husband, Albert; and four children, Charles Palm and his wife, Cora of Star Lake, Beverly Palm Lawson and her husband, Eric, Saratoga Springs, Emma Palm Taylor, Birmingham, Ala., and Daniel Palm and his wife, Linda, Stamford; her grandchildren, Andrea Palm and her husband, Martin Newhouse, Katherine Palm, Laurie Lawson Lingenfelter, Scott Lawson and his wife, Darlene, Mary Taylor McClung, James Taylor Jr., Matthew Palm and Jacob Palm; and five great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Palm worked at Spoor's Furniture Store in Stamford, and was employed in the South Kortright Central School cafeteria and retired after 13 years of service as Post Mistress of South Kortright Post Office.

Perhaps she is best known for her creative sewing skills and her Fairy Tale Crafts Shop. Over the years she has lovingly sewed stuffed animals and Raggedy Anne and Raggedy Andy dolls that have touched the hearts of children young and old.

She was an active member of the Most Precious Blood Roman Catholic Church in South Kortright for 55 years and most recently of Sacred Heart Church in Stamford.

Mrs. Palm was very active in the Altar Rosary Society and many other church activities as well as numerous other volunteer activities including; Stamford-Hobart Inner Wheel where she participated in the screening or area children for amblyopia and the Delaware County Cancer Coalition.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, at Sacred Heart Church, Stamford, at 10 a.m., with Father Anthony Ligato and Father John Burns as celebrants.

Calling hours will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003, from and 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Burial will follow the service at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Stamford.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 20 Elm St., Delhi, NY 13753 or the Delaware County Cancer Coalition, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Delaware County, Route 10, Hamden, NY 13782.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home in Hobart.

Imogene June Robinson

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Imogene ("Jean") June Robinson, 91, of Willow Street in Hyde Park, died late Sunday afternoon, Aug. 10, 2003, at her home.

Jean was born on June 25, 1912, in Spokane, Wash., a daughter of Thorvald Justinus and Jennie Marie (Larson) Petersen.

She married Donald W. Robinson, PhD., on April 12, 1947, in West Orange, N.J. Dr. Robinson died March 16, 1998. Jean and her husband, Don, met in New Jersey, and later moved to Chestertown, Md., where she accepted a position and continued her educational pursuits.

Jean and Don later moved to Burlington Flats, where they lived until the mid-1990s when they moved to their present home in Hyde Park.

For many years, Jean and her husband were members of the First Presbyterian Church in Cooperstown, where she served as a Junior High Sunday School teacher, and introduced her students to the on-going Religious Program at Jordanville Seminary. During this time Jean enrolled in the Continuing Education Program at Wells College where she pursued a degree in Religious Education.

Jean was an avid traveler, touring the United States and visiting all 50 of the states. She spent one year in Hawaii, doing research on Hawaiian customs and dances.

Upon her return to the mainland she performed for many schools and service clubs, demonstrating the various dances and emphasizing the value of the Hawaiian culture.

She is survived by her brother-in-law and his wife, Douglass and Verna Robinson of Phillipsburg, N.J.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Stephen J. Quinlan, co-pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, officiating. Burial will follow at the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Jean's memory may be made to the Music Fund of the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, 25 Church St., Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Robert B. Ainslie

WEST BEND, Wis. — Dr. Robert B. Ainslie, 92, died Friday, Aug. 8, 2003, at the Cedar Lake Health Care Center in West Bend, Wis.

He was born on June 11, 1911, in Escanaba, Mich., to the late Frederick and Francis (nee Brown) Ainslie and was united in marriage to Margaret Fay on Dec. 28, 1941, in Ilion.

He graduated from Ilion High School in Ilion, and then graduated from Colgate University in 1933. He earned his M.D. from the University of Rochester School of Medicine, graduating in 1937.

He served an internship at Jersey City Medical Center from 1937 through 1938. He then did volunteer medical service in China, assigned to Presbyterian Hospital during the Sino-Japanese war from January 1939 to May 1940.

He served as Assistant in Pathology and Assistant Director of Blood Bank at Memorial Hospital in Syracuse, from July 1940 to July 1941, and then completed a fellowship in Surgery at Cleveland Clinic (Ohio) from July 1941 to December 1942.

He returned to China under the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society, assigned to a hospital in Ipin, West China, from 1943 to 1946. On furlough from June 1946 to May 1947, he added a short course in surgery in New York. In August 1949, he returned to West China with his family and in 1949, he and his family were forced to flee to the Philippines where he served two hospitals in the Island of Panay in Central Philippines from 1949 to 1952.

In the spring of 1952, he and his family returned to Cleveland and the Cleveland Clinic to complete his residency, where he changed his practice from general surgery to otolaryngology. In 1954, after completing his residency at the Cleveland Clinic, he and his family moved to Madison, Wis., where he was a practicing otolaryngologist at Jackson Clinic until retiring in 1976. After retiring from the Jackson Clinic, he continued to work two days a week as a general practitioner at Madison Geriatric Clinic until 1983.

In 1983, he and his wife moved to Penny Retirement Community in Florida, where he served as Medical Director until 1995. He continued to serve as an on-call physician at Penny Retirement Community until moving back to Wisconsin in December 2002.

Dr. Ainslie was a member of the State Medical Society of Wisconsin and Florida. He was elected as Fellow to American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology in 1959.

He was a member of the board of directors of the Board of Homeland Ministries UCC from 1968 to 1975, and a member of the board of directors of Fairhaven Retirement and Nursing Home UCC from 1969 to 1975.

He was a past member of the Rotary Club of Oregon, Wis., the Lions Club on Madison, from 1965 to 1971, the Kiwanis Club of Dodgeville, Wis., from 1976 to 1983, the Rotary Club of Green Cove Springs, Fla., from 1983 to 2002, and was listed in Strathmore's Who's Who 2000-2001.

Besides serving his patients and his community, Dr. Ainslie most enjoyed being with his family and traveling. Prior to moving to Florida, he had retired to rural Dodgeville, where he built a home on 13 acres with a stream and pond. He loved sitting at the dining room table watching the birds and wildlife and reveling in nature.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret; four children, Susan (Roy) Sellars of Sheboygan, Wis., John (Christine) Ainslie of Sun Prairie, Wis., Fred (Christine) Ainslie of Ironwood, Mich., and William (Victoria) Ainslie of Atlanta, Ga.; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Ainslie; a sister, Ruth Swift; a niece, a nephew and a great-niece.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, at 1 p.m. at Lake Edge United Church of Christ, 4200 Buckeye Road, Madison, WI. Visitation will be at the church from noon until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated.

Ryan D. Rodrigues

ONEONTA — Ryan D. Rodrigues died on Monday, Aug. 11, 2003, at the Albany Medical Center, as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He was born in Cooperstown on June 4, 1986, the son of Robert Rodrigues and Maureen Hennessy.

Ryan attended Oneonta High School, where he was a member of the Drama Club, the Thespian Society and the Swim Team. He had a love for music, especially the guitar.

He is survived by his parents, Maureen Hennessy of Oneonta, and Robert and Debbie Rodrigues of Westford; his brother and sister-in-law, Patrick and Jennifer McGowan; his sister and brother-in-law, Kerri and Pete Gartung; his sister, Livia Rodrigues; his grandmothers, Mary Hennessy and Helen Rodrigues; his uncles and aunts, James and Cindy Hennessy, William and Eileen Hennessy, Ellen Hennessy, Noreen Hennessy, Joe O'Connell, Aleta Fevola and Judi Rodrigues; nieces and nephews, Kaitlyn Burton, Peter Gartung Jr., Adam Gartung and Julia Rose McGowan; and cousins, Jessica, Billy, Jimmy, Richie and Brian Hennessy, Catherine O'Connell, Mellisa Schwartz, Alana Fevola, Brian Vibber, Jody Palmieri and Darby Mintel.

He is also survived by his good and loyal friends, Alex Sessions, Emmett Maloney, Joey Ruffino, Ian Golden and many others.

He was predeceased by his grandfathers, William Hennessy and Robert Rodrigues II.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, at 11 a.m. in the St. James Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Robert Haskell, pastor, officiating.

A private family burial will be in the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

Friends may call Wednesday evening at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, from 7 to 9 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ronald McDonald House of Albany, 139 South Lake Ave., Albany, NY 12208 or the Oneonta High School Drama Club, Upper East Street, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Betty J. Clark

WALTON — Betty J. Clark, 74, of Walton, died Monday morning, Aug. 11, 2003, in the Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, after a long illness.

Betty was born in Walton, the daughter of Harry G. and M. Laverna Logan Clark.

She was a graduate of Walton High School and the Lowell School of Business, Binghamton.

She was a clerk, employed by NYSEG for 32 years and retiring in 1993.

Betty was a member of NYSEG Century Club and the First United Methodist Church of Walton. She was very active in her church, serving as financial secretary, a member of its senior choir and the bell choir.

She is survived by two brothers, Earl and Gloria Clark of Roscoe, and Kissimmee, Fla., and Jack and Sharlee Clark, Paradise Valley, Ariz.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her brother, Donald R. Clark; and her sister, Ruth C. Driggs.

Friends may call Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St. in Walton.

Funeral services will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Walton on Thursday Aug. 14, 2003, at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in Betty's memory may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 101 North St., Walton or Walton EMS, 61 West St., Walton. Envelopes for memorial contributions are available at the funeral home.

Thelma P. Stevens

ONEONTA — A service to celebrate the life of Thelma P. Stevens, who passed away on Aug. 1, 2003, will be held on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2003, at 1 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church, Chestnut Street, Oneonta, with the Rev. Thomas A. Clemow II, pastor, officiating.

A committal service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, at 1 p.m. in St. Lawrence Cemetery in Cape Vincent.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Peter J. Breen

RICHMONDVILLE — Mr. Peter J. Breen, 87, recently of The Meadows, Cooperstown, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, after a brief illness.

He was born April 26, 1916, in Brooklyn, the son of Peter and Ann (Gahan) Breen.

On June 29, 1940, he married Helen E. Bingham of Brooklyn. She predeceased him April 30, 2003.

He was a construction ironworker and ship fitter for Colonial Sand and Stone Corp., Roslyn Harbor, and a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers since June 28, 1957.

Mr. Breen is survived by his son, Michael J. Breen and his wife, Priscilla of Goodyear Lake; grandchildren, David J. Breen of Queens, Sean Breen of West Babylon, Susan Breen Douglas of West Babylon; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Helen Simpson of Coral Springs, Fla.

He was predeceased by a son, Peter J. Breen Jr., on Sept. 8, 1993.

A combined memorial service for Peter and Helen Breen will be held in the Milford Center Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Contributions in Mr. Breen's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 31 Adams Ave., Endicott, NY 13760.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home in Cherry Valley.

Kathleen Sturdevant

LONGS, S.C. — Memorial services for Kathleen Tyrrell Sturdevant of Longs and Walton, who passed away on July 18, 2003, will take place on Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, at 11 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church in Delhi, with the Rev. Lisa Heckman officiating.

A luncheon will follow the service in the Church Fellowship Hall.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2003, at the MacArthur Funeral Home in Delhi, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Private family burial will be at the convenience of the family at Bovina Cemetery in Bovina.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home in Delhi.

Clarence Watson

BAINBRIDGE — Clarence Watson, 82, formerly of Bainbridge and Otego, passed away early Tuesday morning, Aug. 12, 2003, at the New York State Veterans Home of Oxford, where he had most recently made his home.

Clarence was born Oct. 28, 1920, in Delhi, the son of William and Emma (Jones) Watson.

He grew up in the Delhi and Hamden areas, where he attended the local schools and subsequently entered the United States Military to serve his country during World War II.

Returning home, he gained employment with the Scintilla of Sidney, where he met Ruth Sutton. On June 24, 1951, in Sidney, Clarence and Ruth were married and, in 1954, they purchased a farm in Otego. They later moved to Mount Upton, in 1958, where they operated another farm until 1968. Moving to Bainbridge in 1970, Clarence returned to work for Scintilla, retiring in 1977.

He relocated back to Otego in 1982, but due to health problems, lived with his daughter and her family in Norwich, from 1999 until he entered the veterans home.

He was a former Grange member, a member of the First Baptist Church of Bainbridge, and had also been part of the construction team that built the Guernsey Memorial Library in Norwich.

Clarence is survived by his daughter, Reba Worman and husband, Fred of Norwich; his grandchildren, Rebecca Walters and husband, Michael of Potsdam, Elizabeth Musk and husband, Paul of Norwich, and William Worman, his fiancee, Amy C. Sutton, and her children, Joseph and Veronica, also of Norwich; two great-grandchildren, Angela Walters and Sierra Musk. Also surviving are his two sisters, Eleanor Harkness of Otego and Hilda Avery of Meridale; and his sister-in-law, Mariam Adams of Sidney.

Besides his wife, Ruth, who passed away Jan. 25, 2000, Clarence was predeceased by his sister, Lillian Watson.

Graveside services for Clarence will be held at the convenience of the family from Mt. Hope Cemetery. Michael Walters of Potsdam, Clarence's grandson-in-law, will officiate.

Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m.

Louis F. Zeidner

SMYRNA — Louis F. Zeidner, 90, of Route 80, passed away Monday, Aug. 11, 2003, at the Valley View Manor Nursing Home, Norwich.

He was born in Oxford on Sept. 6, 1912, a son of Herman and Bertha Cornish Zeidner.

He received his education in Coventry and Greene schools.

On May 6, 1939, he was united in marriage to the former Harriet Moxley.

Mr. Zeidner was a dairy farmer for many years until his retirement.

He was a member of the Smyrna United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Harriet; a daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Edward Zirkel of Norwich; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Herman and Shirley Zeidner of Unadilla, Richard and Sylvia Zeidner of W. Eaton, Ernest and Ann Zeidner of Monticello, and Fred Zeidner of W. Eaton; a sister, Pauline Reynolds of Daytona Beach, Fla.; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a sister, Bell All; a brother, Karl Zeidner; a granddaughter, Verna; two great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Peggy Zeidner.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the Willcox Cemetery, Earlville, (town of Smyrna).

Contributions may be made to the Smyrna Emergency Squad, Smyrna, NY 13464.

Arrangements entrusted to the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne.

Henry C. 'Heinz' Kathmann

DELHI — Henry C. "Heinz" Kathmann, 78, a longtime Elk Creek, Delhi, resident, passed away at his home with his family by his side, Wednesday evening, Aug. 13, 2003.

The son of the late Henry W. and Erna (Hohls) Kathmann Jr., he was born March 14, 1925, in Soltau, Germany, coming to the U.S. when he was a child, settling on upper Elk Creek, Delhi, where his family purchased a large farm.

Heinz received his education at Delaware Academy and, as a young man, enjoyed flying an airplane, delighting in scaring his mother and neighbors with his aerial antics. A faithful son, he worked many years to make the family dairy farm a success (ownership passing to him in 1966), and with the help of his wife, the former Charlotte Roth, whom he married June 5, 1954, they raised six children.

When he could no longer handle the cows, he became a bus driver for Charlotte Valley Central School for 14 years, though he continued to assist his son with the farm during haying, especially enjoying cutting wood, which he called his "therapy."

An active life-member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Delhi, and past-member of East Meredith Fire Dept., for many years Heinz and his wife traveled to Florida in their motorhome for the winter months. He considered his life to be "blessed," for which his family gives thanks.

Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Charlotte Kathmann, at home; their children, Debra Anderson, Bainbridge, Robert Kathmann, Delhi, Carol (William) Parker, Jefferson, Susan Kathmann, Rochester, Joanne (Sherman) McAlpin, Bowie, Md., and Donna (Edward) Roche, Delhi; also filling his life with joy are 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Erna Chichester, East Meredith, and Mary Ann (Joseph) Roscino, Cornwall; a brother-in-law, John (Barbara) Roth, Saltillo, Miss.; nieces, nephews, aunts and many cousins.

He was predeceased by a son-in-law, Wayne Anderson, and a brother-in-law and nephew, Leon and Alan Chichester.

Friends are invited to call 7 to 9 p.m. this evening (Friday) Aug. 15, when the family will be in attendance at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, and funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday by his pastor, the Rev. John Priest, at Immanuel Lutheran Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family will appreciate memorial contributions to Immanuel Lutheran Church, or Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.
