Irene Osborn

EDMESTON — Irene Osborn, 94, of Burlington Flats, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, at The Meadows in Middlefield.

She was born Oct. 7, 1908, in Edmeston, the daughter or Irwin and Lena Delphina (Sitts) Davis.

She married Clayton Osborn on Nov. 19, 1924, in Edmeston. He predeceased her on July 9, 1973.

Irene was a devoted mother and wife. She is honored by her family and all who knew her and have received the comfort of her presence.

She was a member of the Burlington Flats Baptist Church and The Friendly Neighbors Club.

As a homemaker she was noted for her baking skills which included breads, pies and molasses cookies. Irene also tended her home and family with her knitting, crocheting and her flower and vegetable gardens. Her leisure time was spent reading and memorizing poetry.

Irene is survived by her children and their spouses, Margery and Stewart Emhof, Janice and Max Kennedy, Bradley C. and Rose Osborn, Donald Osborn and his special friend, Irene, and Duane E. and Carolyn Osborn; her sister, Edna Palmater; 10 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Irene was also predeceased by her grandson, Christopher; and her two sisters, Gladys Marr and Mildred Brownell.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Sept. 22, 2003, at 10 a.m. at the Burlington Flats Baptist Church, with Pastor Jay Henderson officiating.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Interment will be at the Burlington Flats Cemetery following the service.

Contributions may be made in Irene's memory to either the Burlington Flats Baptist Church or the Catskill Area Hospice.

Steven Harrington

ONEONTA — Steven D. Harrington, 31, of Oneonta, went to be with the Lord on Sept. 18, 2003, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

Born Sept. 13, 1972, in Oneonta, Steve was the son of Stanley and Mary Jane Holden Harrington.

Raised in Oneonta, Steve attended Oneonta schools graduating in 1990, then graduated from Broome Community College.

He held positions at QFM, the Great American and the Oneonta City Fire Department. Most recently he worked for Cooperstown Medical Transport as a paramedic and Creative Electronics.

Steve was an Assistant Chief for the West Oneonta Fire Department and also volunteered as a Committee Member and Assistant Scoutmaster for Oneonta Boy Scout Troop 23.

Survivors include his fiance, Sandi Burrows of Oneonta; his parents, Stan and Mary Jane Harrington of Oneonta; a brother, Scott Harrington and his wife, Kerri of Oneonta; maternal grandmother, Lois Holden of Oneonta; uncle, Donald Holden of Oneonta, and other aunts and uncles including Ronald and Tina Gage of Frankfort.

He was especially proud of the extended family he found in Cooperstown Medical Transport, the Fire Departments and A.O. Memorial Fox Hospital, and his dog, Coco.

Steve was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Hubert Holden; and paternal grandmother, Jennie Harrington.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. with the family at Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta. Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, at Bookhout Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Greater Plains Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Steve's honor may go to the West Oneonta Fire Department and First Response Unit, P.O. Box 8, West Oneonta, NY 13861, for the establishment of a Scholarship Fund for Individuals Entering Fire or EMS Service.

Robert McQuinn

UNADILLA — Robert McQuinn, 80, of Unadilla, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, after a short but gallant battle with cancer.

He was born on June 20, 1923, in Staten Island, the son of Robert and Mary (Cravens nee Jenkins) McQuinn.

He married Evelyn Baggstrom on July 30, 1955, in Frenchtown, N.J.

Bob served in the United States Army during World War II as a surgical technician. He worked for many years in advertising for pharmaceutical companies in the New Jersey area before moving to Unadilla in 1990. Most recently he had worked with the County Shopper in the advertising department.

Bob always had a great sense of humor, and always a kind word to say. He also loved the woods and enjoyed gardening. But most of all he was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Evelyn, of Unadilla; his daughters, Michele of Pennsylvania, Nancy Creveling and her husband, Thomas of Unadilla; his son, Jeffery Robert McQuinn and his fiance, Tonnia of Masonville; his daughter, Jennifer Holzapfel and her husband, Dennis of Toms River, N.J.; five grandchildren, James Cherwinski, Robert Cherwinski, Keith Cherwinski, April Roy and Dennis J. Holzapfel; two great-grandchildren, Daniel Roy and Joemer Cherwinski; his brother, Thomas C. McQuinn and his wife, Betsy of Unadilla.

He was predeceased by his son, Robert McQuinn, he died in 1957; and his sister, Maryanna McQuinn.

A service to celebrate the life of Robert McQuinn will be held on Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003, at 2 p.m. in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 34 River St., Otego, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Burial will take place in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Milford, N.J., at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to Bassett Healthcare Cancer Treatment Center, 1 Atwell Drive, Cooperstown, NY 13326 in Bob's memory.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Otego.

Bernice Koetzner

HILLSBOROUGH, N.J. — Bernice Gibson Koetzner, 92, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003, at Foothill Acres Nursing Home.

She was born in Franklin, N.Y., and formerly lived in Delaware county. She moved to New Jersey and lived in North Plainfield and Bridgewater before moving to Hillsborough four years ago, with her daughter, Geneva (Ginny) DeMarco.

Bernice was employed at the Scintilla Company in Sidney. Upon moving to New Jersey, she was employed at RCA in Bridgewater, and then with the Somerset County Nutrition Center in Warren.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in Somerville and S.A.I.L. She was a former member of the Trinity Reformed Church in North Plainfield.

Bernice enjoyed reading in her spare time.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Francis W. Stewart; and her second husband, George Koetzner.

She is survived by a daughter, Geneva (Ginny) DeMarco; two sisters-in-law, Elsie Stewart and Marie Griffen; two grandchildren, JoAnne Waller Mills and Barbara Mazzagatti; and six great-grandchildren, Jamie, Carolyn and Megan Waller and Michelle, Dominic and Rocco Mazzagatti.

Interment will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003, in Ouleout Valley Cemetery, 162 Main St., Franklin.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Adult Day Center of Somerset County, 120 Finderne Ave., Suite 102, Bridgewater, NJ 08807.

Dawn E. Dilello

ONEONTA — Dawn E. Dilello, 70, of Oneonta, passed away Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Hospital Nursing Home.

She was born April 28, 1933, in Edmeston, the daughter of Earle and Anna (King) White.

She married Eugene "John" Dilello on June 28, 1952, and he passed away on May 19, 2003.

For more than 25 years, retiring as a supervisor in 1989, Dawn worked for the New York Telephone Company.

She was a member of St. Mary's Church and the Telephone Pioneers.

Dawn loved gardening and baking, but most of all she enjoyed the time spent with her grandchildren. Her devotion to her children will never be forgotten.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Robin and Randy Winans of Sidney, Gary and Milynda Dilello of Oneonta, Julie and Bob Zaveral of Mount Upton, John and Traci Dilello of Oneonta, JoAnn and Bob Winn of Oneonta and Jill and Shawn Bookhout of Mt. Pocono, Pa.; her grandchildren, Kevin Van der Sommen, C. J. Minor, Tony Dilello, Kristin Winn, Melanee Winans, Tyler Dilello, Alex Winn, Jordan Dilello, Jennifer Dilello, Ryan Zaveral, Jenna Rose Dilello, Danielle Bookhout and Jaci Lynn Zavera1; her sister and brothers and their spouses, Crystal and Don Espey of Halfmoon, Bernie and Rose Ann White of Oneonta, and Bud and Yolanda White of Venus Beach, Calif.; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by two grandchildren, Jessica Bookhout and Jonathan Dilello, as well as a sister, Barbara Pickens, and two brothers, Gaither and Stanford White.

A Mass of Christian burial, in which friends are invited, will be held on Monday, Sept. 22, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor officiating.

Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers contributions to be made to the Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Paul F. Simonson

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Paul Francis Simonson, 75, passed away suddenly Sept. 4, 2003, in Salt Lake City, Utah.

He was born Sept. 6, 1927, in Cortland, to Robert Bruce and Leucinda Edith Hinckley Simonson.

He married Sue Perry Kelley on April 13, 1958, who predeceased him, and his current wife, Barbara Jean Gettys, on April 24, 1982.

A graduate of Oneonta High School, Paul served in the United States Army from 1950-52, in Austria and Italy.

He was the co-owner of the Simonson Brothers Ice Cream Company. After his family, his real passion was skiing.

Paul retired in 1990, and moved to Salt Lake City to ski. He skied at Alta as a member of the Wild Old Bunch. He received a 25-year service award from the National Ski Patrol, was a former Mason and a former member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce.

Paul is survived by his wife Barbara; his children, Kelley Lynn Simonson of Eugene, Ore., Richard Bruce Simonson of Southampton, Pa., Paula Sue Simonson of Salt Lake City; stepchildren, Sandra S. Millspaugh of Fairview, N.C., William C. Schmidt of Gig Harbor, Wash., Carol S. Tinney of Bellevue, Wash., and James H. Schmidt of Incline Village, Nev. He is also survived by grandchildren, Meghan E., Michael Paul and Kevin Matthew Simonson of Southampton, Pa., and Catherine Kelley and Corey Thomas Knapp of Salt Lake City; eight step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Marion Simonson Young of Myrtle Creek, Ore.; her nephew, Mark Simonson of Oneonta; and sister-in-law, Helen Simonson of Oneonta.

A celebration of life will be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 4, at the First United Methodist Church in Oneonta. Friends and family may call at 1 p.m. at the church.

Thomas W. Mottram Sr.

HARTWICK — Thomas W. Mottram Sr., 80, of Wells Avenue, Hartwick, died early Friday morning, Sept. 19, 2003, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

Tom was born on Sept. 24, 1922, in Glens Falls, a son of George and Margaret (Meehan) Mottram. On Sept. 15, 1946, he married Irene Bannahan in Glens Falls. They were married for 52 years until her death on March 23, 1999.

Raised and educated in Glens Falls, Tom graduated from St. Mary's Academy in 1940. He was then employed as an assistant manager for the Schine Theatre Corp. in Gloversville. On Sept. 10, 1942, he enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served his country during World War II as a fire controlman on the USS Ingersoll. Upon his honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy in 1946, he remained in the United States Naval Reserve, moving back to Glens Falls where he was employed by New York Telephone as a cable splicer. In September of 1950 he was called on to serve his country during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in March of 1952.

In June of 1954, Tom and his family moved from South Glens Falls to Hartwick, where he continued his employment with New York Telephone. From 1967 until his retirement in 1982, he was employed as an outside plant engineer for New York Telephone.

A devoted veteran of the United States Navy, Tom was an active member and past post commander of the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128 in Cooperstown, as well as the Hartwick American Legion Post No. 1567. On the VFW state level, Tom served at one time as county commander and as the personal aide to Alfred J. Bleich during his term as commander for the Department of New York. On the VFW national level, he served as an aide-de-camp.

A member of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, he was also a life member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and enjoyed playing and watching golf.

Tom is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Gloria Jean and Jesse Lawton of Valley Head, Ala.; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Thomas W. and Susan Mottram Jr. of Lakeland, Fla., Stephen G. Mottram of Hartwick, Keven D. and Jodie Mottram of Elyria, Ohio, and Chris and Cathy Mottram of Bradenton, Fla.; six grandsons, Loren Mottram, Shane and Troy Mottram and Bradley and Michael Mottram and Adam Putnam; one granddaughter, Amber Mottram; one sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ellen and George Savale of Queensbury; two sisters-in-law, Louise Selkirk of South Hadley, Mass., and Patricia Jones of Queensbury; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one brother, Robert A. Mottram.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 23, when the Mottram family will be in attendance.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 24, at St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown with Fr. George St. John, temporary parish administrator, presiding.

The Service of Committal and Burial will follow in Hartwick Cemetery. Full military honors will be accorded at the grave site by members of the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128 in Cooperstown and the Hartwick American Legion Post No. 1567.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Funeral Ritual will be conducted Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home by members of the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign War Post No. 7128, Cooperstown.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
